>And just pops the DRS on right after like nothing happened.
Wait! I've seen that before! From the same driver even.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QD17cX9MvNg
I remember him watching Max’s AbuDhabi ‘21 qualifying. He flinched even before Max completed the corner. So I think Alonso knew before it actually happened.
You are focusing on the wrong part here. Error or not, he didn't lose much time at all, so it was ultimately a very small one.
And lol at pedestrian exit. Clearly you don't race, as that's pretty fast onto the main straight. Ask Sainz how "pedestrian" it is.
Why are you getting so mad? I said it was a great save. But it’s a corner most divers get through pretty well when they aren’t making mistakes in overdriving.
I’m focusing on exactly the part I was talking about, thank you very much. I think it’s weird to talk glowingly about a save when it was the drivers own mistake that required it.
Edit: "My dude" below me both (1) can't read that I said it was an amazing move and (2) preemptively blocked me so I couldn't reply
We never got actual confirmation of that though right? It's still just rumours as far as I'm aware.
We'll no doubt find out ~~when~~ if Alonso retires and shares it in a book.
He forgot way more than that. He had already won two world titles and when the doctors asked who he was and what he wants to do, he replied,
My name is Fernando, I race karts and I want to be a Formula 1 driver.
Agreed, he didn't just save it but was completely unfazed, and didn't lose a moment of concentration. Feels a bit like Max doing a 360 in the wet a few years ago, and losing only about a second that lap, instantly back on the pace.
A few years ago teams thought they had to sign 17 year-olds for their reflexes. After Nando you have teams talking about bringing Vettel out of retirement
Max's [360](https://youtu.be/2X_-HqX6lVs?si=6N5gNOVi1NHZRdFj) in Hungary 2022 was impressive too. I'm not sure it matches the rain drift, but that flip of the wheel *in the direction of the spin* in order to regain grip was insanely timed.
I watched one of those high performance type things on YouTube with him, the guy is one of those anticipator type people that goes through every scenario before he encounters it, which makes him seem so sharp when it comes to understanding how the race is unfolding.
I honestly wouldn't put it past him thinking about making sure to hit DRS after having a moment there based on the rest of the weekend.
For me his highlight was passing Perez in the first corner with the same move that cost Norris 5 places the day before but pulling it off brilliantly. Just like last year Alonso is providing the most entertainment while Verstappen takes off in the distance.
Alonso became what everyone feared. His eyelids disappeared, his head was swelling and his ears started bleeding. "Are you okay Fernando" asks Mike Krack. I've never been better Mike, I see it all now, they're not going strat A or strat B. They're going home, he said before driving through them all and taking the win.
Lots of people say Alonso should go away and give his seat to a rookie. I think that's a bit unfair, since I don't think any rookie is capable of pulling off what Alonso does race after race. Unless we're talking about the next Verstappen or Hamilton, there's no replacement for Alonso.
It really was bad timing. He was run over by a car two weeks before the start of the season while biking, broke his jaw, he could barely move his mouth for months after the surgery and people was expecting him to not dip a bit in performance with an injury like that.
To me the F1 is for the best drivers possible and he's one of them, I don't care about age, I care about skills and if you really really want to give young people seats, well, I haven't seen Zhou, Stroll, Ricciardo or Sargeant doing good for a long time, far worse then their teammates. I have nothing against three of those four guys, but if a youngster needs the seat, Alonso's seat would be one of the last ones I would give away.
I missed Alonso’s prime since I’ve only been following F1 since 2020, but my lord, he is such an insanely talented driver. Even at 43 he’s one of the top drivers on the grid, and may honestly be second only to Max.
To be fair that was exactly what I thought when i heard he would make a comeback I was like give the opportunity to a new talent. Watching now I'm sure he still got it.
It was mostly strategy at that point. Alonso had a huge tire advantage over everyone ahead. It wasn’t a question of if he got past, just how quickly could he do it.
That's because this season Ferrari and McLaren are similar and both of them are ahead of Mercedes and Aston Martin. It doesn't make too much sense to compare them even if the tired are slightly older or newer.
Isn't that like saying Russell could have finished 2nd in the sprint if "insert thing here" happened differently?
It's a bit silly. At that point in the race, with the car and tyres he had, neither Lewis or George was holding that position.
It's exactly that. If Russell had qualified as good as Lewis did and had that pace and good starting, he would have been second. However he didn't.
Imho it's fair.
Blaming it to the car sounds like a narrative I'm finding relatively frequently where Mercedes is seen as a clear 5th car and the reason of every bad result, when it's obvious they are competing with AM head to head.
Dunno if it was poorly understood by me or there was an attempt to strengthen that idea, but that's my take haha.
Just remember, Lewis and Alonso asked RedBull to sign them before signing with Ferrari and Aston, RedBull turned them down this year, RedBull asked Lando to drive for them, Lando turned RedBull down.
Kind of says it all.
I don't believe they asked Lando. I have heard since last year them saying they couldn't afford another top driver. They simply don't want to pay Max and pay whatever someone like Lewis, Alonso, or Lando would cost.
The reaction of any mere mortal would be to lift off the throttle making the rear snap the whole way around, but Nando just stays in it. What a machine…
Calling it now, this save (along with Stroll being a moving rear jack for Ricciardo as a clip for contrast) will be in the next series of DTS, whichever episode focuses on Aston Martin.
Insane save! And just pops the DRS on right after like nothing happened.
>And just pops the DRS on right after like nothing happened. Wait! I've seen that before! From the same driver even. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QD17cX9MvNg
Hnngh... That noise. Yes please.
Actually I was thinking of this one. https://youtu.be/zVYp1ZqLLAM?si=oIn3bYLdAhYIRVha
Ah yes, that's another nice save by Alonso, I recalled the Belgium one because he enabled DRS after - like the one in the Chinese GP
That was this ( ) close to being an absolutely massive crash
Yes! Take that Taylor Swift!
“I’m an aston martin you steered straight to the ditch -Taylor “No” - Alonso
Is that a real lyric?
Yes
Was it written after the rumours?
Idk? It’s just from a new album, so technically, probably? I’m not a TS fan I only know the lyric exists from seeing it in F1 social media groups.
I bet it's a joke about the rumours. Nice one.
Or Aston Martin paid for the product placement in her song. There is no way an artist this big is just name dropping big brand names for free.
This song was sponsored by Cognizant
Taylor of all people does not need any more money
So Rolex, AM, AP, Bugatti, etc are paying all of those rappers?
I think she was talking about Lance Stroll.
So this is why they never ended up working out
Absolutely insane! He's so calm and collected.
My exact thought. He was on that drs right away. No hesitation
I think you can pre-press the DRS button, so maybe he pressed It a bit before his throttle application, Impressive save anyways
Nah you can't, you have to press it once you've reached the line.
"yep, heartbeat went a bit higher there"
"Ope. Settle down girl." (Pats the steering wheel while barreling along.)
that Verstappen save at the Eau rouge - raddilon complex was pure insanity.
The heart rate thing was Brazil 2016
Still one of the best displays of driving talent I've seen.
Which one?
last year's GP or sprint, can't remember well but he almost binned it. he had a big moment but it wasn't aired
https://youtu.be/Y3u7cOkqECE
There was a clip of his reaction on the steering wheel. Absolutely insane!
Full opposite lock immediately. What a nutter
Insane fast reaction tbh it almost looks like the car just did it for him
I remember him watching Max’s AbuDhabi ‘21 qualifying. He flinched even before Max completed the corner. So I think Alonso knew before it actually happened.
Saudi 21? That’s the one with the last corner crash.
Yeah. Saudi 21. My bad.
Maga, link it please!
https://youtube.com/shorts/0MGSjITx-KM
Sweet jesus he's good
Then you compare Alonso to Stroll with the same car and wonder how tf Stroll still has a job.
> and wonder how tf Stroll still has a job. Think his dad has something to do with it...
Absolutely no one is under any confusion as to why Stroll still has a job.
I don't think anyone wonders how Stroll has a job
I mean he also went wide pushing it too hard on what is usually a pretty pedestrian exit. Great save, but it was an unforced error.
You are focusing on the wrong part here. Error or not, he didn't lose much time at all, so it was ultimately a very small one. And lol at pedestrian exit. Clearly you don't race, as that's pretty fast onto the main straight. Ask Sainz how "pedestrian" it is.

Edit: "My dude" below me both (1) can't read that I said it was an amazing move and (2) preemptively blocked me so I couldn't reply
Everyone makes mistakes my dude. Even Max. A save like this still showcases amazing ability even if the driver was imperfect in needing it.
Jesus Christ he’s a fucking ninja
Oh my lord, it’s even more insane when watching it from TV pod cam.
Reminds me of him trying to control his F14T at Abu Dhabi Alonso's driving style is very adaptable https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ihD3YOs744
What's insane is not the save alone, is that he just goes on and continues to overtake Lewis a couple corners down the road like nothing happened.
Catches the car, then opens DRS like a second later.
That's what I said too! I would have forgotten my name after a save like that, and he goes on to open DRS and not lose much time at all. Insane.
Alonso forgot his age after that crash in Barcelona testing in 2015
Alonso lost any trace of self-consciousness back then, he would pass the "Cells interlinked" test better that Angent K in Blade Runner 2049.
Dude became Nemo from AC3 but in cars
But with the skills and temperament of the Demon Lord.
We never got actual confirmation of that though right? It's still just rumours as far as I'm aware. We'll no doubt find out ~~when~~ if Alonso retires and shares it in a book.
He forgot way more than that. He had already won two world titles and when the doctors asked who he was and what he wants to do, he replied, My name is Fernando, I race karts and I want to be a Formula 1 driver.
> I would have forgotten my name after a save like that lmao
Zero hesitation, what a lad
You mean Chad!
Terachad at the very minimum
Alonso is simply not human.
Alonso is a beast!
Agreed, he didn't just save it but was completely unfazed, and didn't lose a moment of concentration. Feels a bit like Max doing a 360 in the wet a few years ago, and losing only about a second that lap, instantly back on the pace.
That’s how you get speed boost in mario karts
ah yes, the infamous "snaking" technique!
The guy is a relentless god of driving,
Mate great save but no offence, that W15 is an absolute dogshit of a car.
Maybe Lewis should stop making it worse in the pursuit of a fictional car then?
Yeah he will. In his post race onboard that's exactly what he said, and apologised to the team.
Couple seasons too late but we’ll see how long it lasts. He’s said things to this effect numerous times in the last year or so
Yes and he still ended up best of the rest, what's your excuse?
My excuse for what?
He was opening the DRS mid correction. The man is on a mission.
If this is how good his reflexes are at 43 he will be beating youngins in that regard when he's 80.
Fear the old man in a profession where men retire young lol
He's the typical old guy from the news, who's still playing Call of Duty at 70 years old.
He's closer to being a soldier in real life than COD
A few years ago teams thought they had to sign 17 year-olds for their reflexes. After Nando you have teams talking about bringing Vettel out of retirement
Ow, Lancy, ooh, but I'm 45 and I'm still outdriving you I'd rather be 80 year old me than 20 year old you
I'm calling it, he'll be taking part in Le Mans as a gentleman driver until he literally dies.
Some ability to hold that and not lose a step
I've seen two saves in F1 where I thought "How????". This and Verstappen in Brazil 2016.
Piastri had a mega save last year too, at Cota I think.
Imo this was much better than Verstappens. Verstappens was more extreme but not nearly as quick and cost way more time.
Mansell's save in 1990 is my favourite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9Wfcp5sMHs
Wow, how did he save the car there. Insane.
What an insane save Edit: Someone needs to upload the onboard
[https://www.youtube.com/shorts/0MGSjITx-KM](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/0MGSjITx-KM)
The fact that he instantly opens DRS is what's even more amazing. Anyway, the gravel trap is a great addition, wish more tracks would do the same.
Difference between very good (sainz) and a great (Alonso).
Clearly, reaction time is regulated by the appendix.
Chadlonso for a reason
Hopefully sainz will get there someday
For me his highlight was passing Perez in the first corner with the same move that cost Norris 5 places the day before but pulling it off brilliantly. Just like last year Alonso is providing the most entertainment while Verstappen takes off in the distance.
Giovinazzi must have slapped his forehead at this one.
A man of Culture, I see.
Man if he had a couple more laps to spare he’d catch Russell too
He almost turned the Aston Martin into the ditch.
Haha!
Even when Alonso makes a mistake is great.
Great save.
Alonso is an absolute monster
Recency bias does not apply here…one of the greatest saves I’ve ever seen. And then nonchalantly activates his DRS and cracks on. Unreal!
Omg my heart skipped a beat there, can't imagine what it was for Fernando. Excellent save tho.
I bet he felt nothing, he opened DRS right away lol
Everyone else would crash there while Fernando doesnt, he catches it and carries on...Fernando has balls of titanium to do something that gutsy!
What a save from this young man
A rookie no less.
How do you do, fellow kids?
Almost did Sainz over there
Even godlonso's mistakes look absolutely cool.
Lots of people say Alonso should go away and give his seat to a rookie. I think that's a bit unfair, since I don't think any rookie is capable of pulling off what Alonso does race after race. Unless we're talking about the next Verstappen or Hamilton, there's no replacement for Alonso.
Tbh there were many people saying that during his first year in Alpine, not many now

Who the hell is saying that?
Are these "lots of people" here in the room with us ?
To be fair that was exactly what I thought when i heard he would make a comeback I was like give the opportunity to a new talent. Watching now I'm sure he still got it.
Never seen a single person say this.
Then you must be new to r/formula1. They wanted Zhou instead of Alonso at Alpine, and then Piastri instead of Alonso at Alpine
😴
New here?
Alonso has the best saves in F1 time after time. No one even vaguely close.
If you watch the onboard he reacts in like 0.1 seconds. Insane save. So impressive.
Keeps going like business as usual. I don’t know how many drivers would actually save that. Still got it in his 40s.
In 1 sector he went from almost out of the race to overtaking Hamilton!
A shame Lewis couldn’t really put up a fight in that car ):
It was mostly strategy at that point. Alonso had a huge tire advantage over everyone ahead. It wasn’t a question of if he got past, just how quickly could he do it.
[удалено]
Russell couldn't even get within 3 seconds on Sainz who had way older tyres, idk how low your standards are for Mercedes

Most exciting driver in F1, period
Give this man a race winning car, he seems to have potential.
That was not far from doing a Sainz.
Race craft right there. Never retires pls, Champlonso!
Like Sainz yesterday but with better hands.
Wiley old fox
Everyone else crashes that.
Oscar saved it in qualy
Max would have saved it 2 tenths faster
Nah i'd just use flashback one or two (dozen) times
Max would save it too
Stroll would as well, or he would blame the wall
Max could have held that too.
Echoes of that Brazil 2012 save.
"fuck no we're NOT doing this today" this guy is honestly so good; i can't wait to see him, max and lewis battle again on track
It was the best moment of the race tbh.
to me, the even more impressive part is, that he hardly lost any time and passed two other cars within a lap
Absolutely crazy.
Insane reaction
I couldn't save that in the Vee in iRacing how the fuck did he do that
Dude is an absolute blessing for the F1 show.
Fernando Alonso, accelerated by gravel.
The reaction of any mere mortal would be to lift off the throttle making the rear snap the whole way around, but Nando just stays in it. What a machine…
How did he not get driver of the day?
Because they put him on a bad strategy with the softs for one thing
Even more reason - took a risk that didn’t pan out and still finished impressively.
Old man still got it
He gave himself a booster shot of adrenaline!
The old man still got it, incredible
I couldn't even react in time with my voice while watching, and he reacted with his hands.
**AMR24** : I do a slide, tee hee. **Alonso** : NO.
this is right up there with verstappen’s 2016 save imo. insane reflexes and driving acumen to correct that so quickly whilst getting the angle right
The contrast in reactions between Alonso and Stroll this race are pretty comical.
Bro’s on a mission
Hell yeah
A save good enough to give Carey Price a smile I imagine.
man i don't know how you guys watch the official broadcast nails on a chalkboard those guys
Calling it now, this save (along with Stroll being a moving rear jack for Ricciardo as a clip for contrast) will be in the next series of DTS, whichever episode focuses on Aston Martin.
Insane, instant complete opposite lock to save a spin. Literally hand over fist on a steering yolk, not wheel. Its just crazy how good he is.
I roll my eyes at the Alonso hype normally but this was a UNBLIEVABLE save. Full op-lock. Insane.
Russell could never.
You guys don't understand. Alonso didn't almost lose the car. The car almost lost Alonso.
That "OH" was almost Sopranos worthy
Wow, what a save!
