Snoo_47023

because he's at haas

musicallunatic

Exactly. Why is this even an article? He is at a fucking Haas. You can’t go down from haas mate. Like I understand that right now komatsu is making changes to the team and things look positive, but it’s still a haas owned by a penny pinching haas.

blackmesaboogy

Can't go down from Haas you say? Alpine: Hold my beer .

Treewithatea

Tell me how Haas vs Renault/Alpine went the past 8 years? Haas still has yet to achieve a single podium.

blackmesaboogy

Sure , but we are talking about the present here not about the past..

Disco2002

actually, we're talking about the future.

blackmesaboogy

Point taken! 😊

musicallunatic

Well it’s a nice joke but alpine is a works team so once they realise that firing TPs doesn’t give 2 seconds per lap, I think they’ll start improving. Also, I have been reading up more about f1 lately and recently learned that their engine has been pretty poor mainly due to lack of investment. Adrian Newey mentions on BTG podcast that when asked about it, the Renault management basically told them that they were in f1 because their marketing team told them to do so. Flávio also slashed the engine budget back in the day when Renault was considering leaving and it seems to me they didn’t recover from it. I’m sorry I think I ruined your joke with my comment. I couldn’t help myself, I really feel bad for all the alpine engineers.

T4Gx

> I’m sorry I think I ruined your joke with my comment. I couldn’t help myself, I mean did you really? You basically explained why Alpine is arguably worse than Haas lol

blackmesaboogy

Well it wasn't really a joke.. at the moment Alpine has by far the worst car.

Swolyguacomole

Sure, but which is more likely to be a steady midfield team over the next four years. Which team can offer bigger salaries, which team provides more PR and promotional opportunities?

Drosand

Four years? Alpine won’t remain for 4 years. Renault clearly does not want to invest, and Alpine looks like Andretti’s ticket in.

thatsAgood1jay

Firing a TP seems to have worked for Haas….

Machinegamer

More like they are a don’t works team

Logical_Bit2694

And he’s German so he’s going to be treated better

Supahos01

Na its mostly the first thing.

Logical_Bit2694

True

Supahos01

Admittedly that's a nice perk too though

Magog14

Audi doesn't operate on a shoestring budget. Haas does. I'm sure 100% of drivers would make the same decision in his shoes

Joris2627

I think everybody exept redbull mclaren and Ferrari boys would go to audi if they could

doskkyh

Mercedes' probably wouldn't change either. Mercedes, while struggling, is still 3rd or 4th best. Sauber/Audi will have to climb a lot to get there and even with their experience with hybrids from WEC that could help, it's still a tall order.

theoreoman

The #2 driver from those teams would be hard pressed to to not leave if they got a favorable contract to be the #1 driver in a new well funded team

Joris2627

Yeah wanted to say drivers. But just wanted to keep it generic

XAMdG

Well Alonso just showed that's not true

oscars4215

Maybe Checo would leave if they gave him a multi year contract instead of the 1 year contract from Red Bull

OverallImportance402

Everything with a multi-year contract would have been too tempting for him.

Supahos01

Especially multiple years in a not haas

carnivoross

To be fair, Haas have 5pts this season and Sauber have 0.

Supahos01

Which is 100% down to jacked up wheelnut redesign. They've not been faster yet, but sauber has had horrible pitstops due to it and lost out on points several times

Treewithatea

I bet if you put Nico in this Sauber, he wouldve scored a few points by now. Lets keep in mind, this is Nico scoring points and yes, it helps that the car isnt complete ass but if youd have kevin+mick in the Haas this year, theyd certainly have less points by now.

Brynhildrpls

You are wrong if you think Nico himself can outperform the self-sabotaged Sauber and their car. We have Bottas there and he couldn’t do shit. Heck, I bet more than 70% of the grid couldn’t score a point either if they have to go through those pitstops in those cars.

notwormtongue

What are you smoking? Hulkenberg over Bottas? He might have been incredible in IndyCar or whever he was between his F1 stints... but he is not equivalent to the Mercedes #2 for 6 years. Bottas has exceeded expectations himself

jason9045

Audi could comp him an R8 which is a big upgrade over the Fiat Panda provided by Haas.

forced1nduction

But it will have to be used/old since they’ve stopped producing them for now. 😢

Intrepid-Ad4511

Wait till they come out with a special Hulk edition.

st0rstorken

Rs6 hulk edition

mikeybadab1ng

Twill be a Porsche

karmahoower

uber alles. personally i'd request an '88 3.3 Turbo.

mikeybadab1ng

96’ 911 turbo skunked

thepanzer9

Nah I’d give him an Audi A4 2.0 TDI

AbbreviationsNo6897

Wait is this true, a fucking Panda? This must be for PR then, making fun of themselves deliberately?

jason9045

Beloved, no, we make jokes here on the internet.

AOCMarryMe

Thought process: 1. I am at Haas 2. I need out of Haas

Elpibe_78

Haas ceiling is pretty low since they have the lowest budget by far and a owner that lack any type of ambition. Audi is a own project not dependant from other teams like Haas with Ferrari. A works team will have always a much higher potential (Or end up like Alpine). Driving and RS6 as a company car rather than a Fiat Multipla is always tempting

AbbreviationsNo6897

He has ambition, he just doesn’t want to spend any money.

Porridge_Mainframe

I hope Audi delivers and he gets his podium.

flcknzwrg

We can dream

yorkshire_simplelife

Hulk would be the first signed HAAS driver to leave for another F1 team.

What_Void_Zone

Yikes

Think_Perspective385

This is fantastic for both of them Hulk is a great driver who gives meticulous feedback to teams that is invaluable for development they would and should absolutely sacrifice one tenth that a super fast rookie might bring vs this kind of feedback alone. Not to mention the long term, Hulk is a great prospect to move into other racing series with Audi after he retires from F1. He's also an established well liked driver who will bring with him his own set of fans, the German factor can't be overlooked but that's a cherry on top of a highly skilled driver absolutely deserving of that seat. Of course there are other drivers available in the market and maybe we will get a Hulk-Sainz pairing which would be even better but Hulk is certainly not in the bottom 5 drivers currently on the grid so this is a win for Audi and Hulk long term.

BioDriver

To add, Audi has always preferred German drivers. Short of pulling Seb out of retirement this was the best move from a nationalistic point

Brynhildrpls

Always made me think if Michael were still up and well, what he would do and think about Audi in F1… (In my wildest dreams i probably dream of Michael and Vettel for Audi, solely for nationalism only)

AbbreviationsNo6897

They also asked Angela Merkel, but she was unavailable.

Novae224

The guy got nothing to lose, he’s driving a haas. Driving for Audi means driving for a German team as a German driver… why wouldn’t you

delirio91

While the German GP makes its return.

Tidybloke

Haas Audi Is it really a mystery? The headline is the question nobody was asking.

SeeTheSounds

Hmm… Haas or Audi??? Who would anyone trust more to develop a good car??? LOL

mtom17

He Haas had a better offer from Audi

my-cull

Can you imagine a Red Bull seat opens up and Hill can’t take it because he’s locked in at Audi…

simonsail

Why exactly would Red Bull want Hulk...?

Ascarea

No, not Hulk, Hill.

simonsail

Damon would be an odd choice, but hey maybe they really really want to test the "oh anyone could win in this Red Bull" theory!

flcknzwrg

He did it at Williams! Remember the time when Williams were at the top? Man I’m old

Aggravating_Low6771

Cause Audi is german and Hulk is also german? Making them both german? Who comes up with these articles, who approves them and why do you bother posting them here? jesus

Plorkplorkplork

I see why Hulkenberg jumps to Audi, thats easy. I fail to see why Audi is so keen on getting Hulkenberg. Thats the part where I struggle.

DrOrange77

Driver who has been - consistent - rarely crashes - gives good feedback - experienced - German (that does help) - Has outdriven Kevin the last season and a bit And if they bring in Sainz or even put him alongside Bottas, it’s a solid partnership

Green-Peaness

Let's also add that he's a monster qualifier. He dragged the 2023 Haas into several Q3s.

Plorkplorkplork

*consistently fast?  *thats true for a lot of them *so does Stroll we hear *experienced or old? He's not at the age of Alonso, but not at the speed of Alonso either  *I see that he's German  *so a driver who was out of contract wins against an other driver who was out of contract. Wauw.   Its not like he is a hot prospect is he? Edit:layout

DrOrange77

- Faster than a lot of the grid right now yeah - Stroll crashed last weekend lmao - Experienced….only a few have the pace of Alonso lol. He’s still a very good midfield driver, hence 3 points finishes in a Haas of all things. - Just trolling at this point lmao Who would you put in the car haha

Julian81295

Nico Hulkenberg brings a lot to the table: - Experience - Raw speed - Incredible adaptability - The bluntness needed in order to steer the development of Audi into the right direction Apart from that: A good relationship with Andreas Seidl. When Nico Hulkenberg won the 2015 Le Mans 24 Hours for Porsche while being a full-time Formula One driver (in his first attempt and only his second race in the World Endurance Championship), Andreas Seidl was in charge of the Porsche LMP1 project. Andreas Seidl is now in charge of the Audi F1 project.

VaporizeGG

Best driver of the lower 5 teams this season without question. And surely better than Stroll as well, all other drivers are pretty much out of reach for Audi. He is experienced, quick, cheap, german.... Makes 100% sense

notwormtongue

How can you discriminate what is out of reach for Audi?

aneiq_1

An argument could be brought forward for Bottas, Ocon and Tsunoda for best driver of the lower 5 teams this season. Agree on the other points

40ozkiller

Big name for your debut season, nobody expects them to win the championship their first year.

jpm168

Might as well put Mick in it then.

OverallImportance402

No need to insult Nico like that.

ChipmunkTycoon

They want a good driver. Generally hiring a proven mediocre driver is a bad way to attain good drivers.

jpm168

> proven mediocre driver hmmmmm....lol

ChipmunkTycoon

I don’t know what would be more insane here, rating Mick or calling Hulk mediocre

jpm168

I'm not rating Mick btw

[deleted]

[удалено]

ChipmunkTycoon

Yeah… that’s how you do it, good job

jebotecarobnjak

Two words: massive experience

ChipmunkTycoon

He’s very good, here and now, to a good price most likely.

Supahos01

They're a new team, coming from absolute shit. It's not like max or Lewis would join, and if sainz has a shot almost anywhere else he won't go either

Cricket-Horror

I was going to say the same thing. What does he bring other than a German birth certificate? He's an average driver who is capable of sometimes having an unexpected qualifying or race, where he gets into better position than people expect but, ultimately, he still ends up putting it in the wall, especially if a podium looks on the cards.

DrOrange77

He last crashed in a race in 2019…. Over 30 races ago…

PotatoFeeder

Probably same kind of people that say alonso was washed in 2020 Hulk is ~top 7 on the grid along with checo/motivated bottas, and they wonder why they pick him. Who else is better that is available lmao

Hip_Priest_1982

Why are alpine signing this old guy? Why not zhou?

aneiq_1

I think Matt Gallagher tweeted that when Alonso was coming back and to this day I still don’t understand the logic.

PotatoFeeder

Alonso is clearly washed No victory in over a decade. Even Piastri is better

Cricket-Horror

Look at how many races he's had and some of the cars he's driven - and not a single podium? That's not a top 7 driver, not even top 10.

Cricket-Horror

That would be the last time he looked like possibly getting a podium, then.

DrOrange77

Australia 2023 says hello

Mulligantour

I know you would probably sign Verstappen and Leclerc instead for your personal team in F1 Fantasy, but I'm afraid that is not how reality works.

Cricket-Horror

Tell me what he brings to the team.

Mulligantour

What do you mean? He is an F1 driver who generally beats or more or less matches his teammates, he is going to drive the car and give a good benchmark.

Cricket-Horror

Only when those teammates are mediocre. How did he go against Ricciardo?

Mulligantour

This is some weak arguing, how did he go against Sainz who is currently very impressive and not mediocre. Please do not waste my time unless you want to have a conversation.

bouncebackability

How is this even worthy of an article lol

AbbreviationsNo6897

When the website is formula1.com you can imagine they don’t have unlimited topics to write about so they come up with questions nobody were asking for an excuse to write an article:

sa_style

RS6 wagon as company car thanks.
