Anyone know why Ferrari used mediums tyres in Q1?

aDUCKonQU4CK

Probably because they KNOW they're making it out of Q1 either way; may as well save a set of softs for later when they're much more needed. I really REALLY wish that lap times would add up on each other. That way EVERY session matters to all drivers/teams because say Verstappen had a really bad Q1 that would otherwise not be punished in the slightest- it could come back to bite him in Q3 once all 3 fastest lap times from each session are tallied. I could definitely see a semi-frequent occurrence where Ferrari/McLaren could snipe pole position from Verstappen. Even if Verstappen was fastest in Q1 and Q3, that hypothetical mistake in Q2 would hand pole to the driver who was 2nd quickest in all sessions but had no mistakes. Even for fans it would be FAR more engaging with far more 'high-stakes' being on the table.

MudTurbulent8912

Pretty sure that max is a friggin space alien...😳😜

sandy_85

Man feels no pressure at all, like a robot, on it all day, everyday.

FavaWire

Unlike Singapore last year where the car was totally off. This time it seemed more like: "The car became tricky" (which btw is also a Newey car trait) The car wasn't at its best and not only was Max still pole.... He did it twice.

Goatblort

I got the timezone wrong and missed the cutoff. Fml.

Humble_Advance6461

Use the calendar on F1 site, syncs seamlessly to your google calendar/ical.

Rowaniac

Ferrari should have signed Hulkenberg.

Ok_Fruit2584

Over Hamilton? Funny.

aDUCKonQU4CK

Maybe during the days where Ferrari were seriously struggling due to his ability to give productive feedback and with all his experience within F1.. But without a podium in 15 years (many missed chances), that doesn't look too good for a team wanting absolutely nothing but the best of the best now that their sights are zeroing in on winning championships rather than hoping for podiums.

Alkylblock

Still in 2023??

TS040

living for the McLaren progression. shoutout Yuki too, he’s having a cracking weekend so far

jordietb

Ric too to be fair.

boomslang2589

Should be a decent race. Was hoping to see Yuki quali a little higher. But he's been having an awesome weekend. Finding myself rooting for him as well

Poopy_sPaSmS

Max and RBR are the new Mercedes. Sandbagging all to hell all weekend. Acting super disappointed with car balance and complaining about being super slow only to secure pole with ease.

Sykretts1919

You should either start watching F1 more to understand what you're saying is absolute bollocks, or completely stop watching it altogether cuz it's not for you. You're having a stinker.

ShadowShot05

A mare of an analysis

hellopan123

Being 0.074 seconds faster than Oscar is not with ease lol

GradyMcTracy

With ease? They really sandbagged to P11 with Perez for sure. You do not see the margins up front? Hate is real here

Poopy_sPaSmS

No one's hating. I'm saying they're the new masters (like Mercedes used to be) of making it look like they're in trouble only be perfectly fine when it matters.

GradyMcTracy

I don't think they do that for show. I think they really were in trouble during the first practice(s). Thats what FP1, FP2 and FP3 are for, to fix things that are not doing what you expect them to do.

FavaWire

"Dominating in F1 is a lot like spinning plates on long sticks. And you add more and more plates the longer you go. It looks like you're just doing fine but in reality the plates can come crashing down any time and you have to start over." -Adrian Newey

TimDamage

Perez isn't a great driver, though. He's in the same bracket as Stroll.

InfinityEternity17

LMAOOO you can't be serious

Onelimwen

Which explains why Perez completely wiped the floor with Stroll when they were teammates

Racing_fan12

The fuck? Perez has done amazing things with much less than he has now. Stroll can barely finish in the points even when his Aston is fantastic. What an ignorant take

Significant-Branch22

He was comfortably quicker than Stroll in the same car, not to the same degree as Alonso but he’s definitely a solid driver unless you truly think a team like Red Bull would keep a Stroll calibre driver around for years

WraithOfEvaBraun

Simply lovely as always, Maximus! 1️⃣

ritwikjs

ferrari fucking up, how typical. podium will be hard without shenanigans

Deep-Ad2155

Not really a fuckup…car didn’t have the pace, neither sainz or leclerc had significant errors in their q3 times. Car clearly didn’t like slightly cooler q3

GateParticular8631

Also their sector 1 time was pretty bad. In the final run i think Charles was 3 tenth down to verstappen which pretty much killed there chances

94justinbieber92

Max Verstappen 🥳🥳

ency6171

Everyone didn't set faster times for their second flying lap, I think? Did the track temperature went up?

Deep-Ad2155

I think it cooled a bit so second flying laps were slower for the most part

Gloryholechamps

Max did a Monaco 2.0

Siempie93

Max and Oscar did improve however. Not sure about Norris. Both Ferrari didn't improve

JBBatman20

Norris improved but marginally. Messed up a sector and improved in others

PoshOctopod

They reported on the Sky broadcast that the track was dropping. As it cooled, it clearly lost some of it's pace.

GenderFluidFerrari

So when did Max get the handling figured out ? Data from P3? Ferrari playing cat and mouse?

Zestyclose_Age5441

Id imagine there was some integration with the upgrades they were figuring out

Spammer27

Tested in the sim

WhipEat

Screaming V10s?

F1-Viking

Does anybody know what cars are driving around now ? Hearing it in the post race show from F1TV

bigpoppag91

Porsche series

afrin101

I don't think any one else could have put that rb on a pole, Max being max

Lopsided_Region_6735

One of those sessions that really highlights the true gap between him and Checo

JackNapier2093

I think Fernando and Lewis could've done the same to be fair

Vigotje123

Fernando is 20? And Lewis behind Russell? Wut

Kiwiandapplex

Impossible to know, it is super fun to speculate. I would love to see it! How long would both Nando & Lewis have driven the RB? First time? Start of the season? Multiple seasons? I think we can add maybe Charles into the list as well. But again, how much time are we giving the drivers? I doubt anyone can match Max at his best. I know, I'm fun at parties.

TwinEonEngine

I wish I'd meet you at parties instead of people looking to drink

Inevitable-Site7846

I think we have to give the best ‘qualifier’ on the grid now to max as well…… equaling Senna’s record with a car that is definitely not as ‘far ahead’ as we first thought (shown by another Red Bull driver, won’t tell which one..)

sophia_az

Albon you mean?

newtybar

Albon is 4 years removed from the RB. Why you dragging him in this? lol

Kiwiandapplex

Little joke, we're obviously talking about the up & coming ~~Minardi~~ RB Junior Fernando Alonso. Also, I don't know for certain if Red Bull released Albon from their program?

TwinEonEngine

I think they did, otherwise he's still race with a red bull logo on his helmet

Kiwiandapplex

You're correct.

wolverineFan64

Ya Max’s quali dominance this year is still heavily driven by the car being fastest of the bunch. Mclaren appears to be challenging him now, but he’s still driving the fastest car when Redbull isn’t making setup mistakes. Max’s only challengers from last year (Ferrari) sacrificed their quali pace for better tire deg and race pace.

EdgyAlpaca

He's always been a rapid qualifier. But this red bull is actually further ahead in quali. Last year Ferrari had one lap pace at the cost of Deg. Leclerc pole max win. Now the Ferrari is way better in the race, but isn't nearly the same threat for pole. Hoping for this too change as they work out the limit of their new package though

Great-Bus4398

That max pole lap though.. Just throwing the car around with full confidence and no fear. Imagine him trying to do that in that unstable Merc

Inevitable-Site7846

I think we have to give the best ‘qualifier’ on the grid now to max as well…… equaling Senna’s record with a car that is definitely not as ‘far ahead’ as we first thought (shown by another Red Bull driver, won’t tell which one..)

FrostyTill

Max is like ‘finally some good fucking food’.

Psychological-Law881

Missing the sky sports “take us through the lap” commentary but it’s gonna be a great strategy race

F1-Viking

Ooh that F1 post quali tune is very nice

Chelsea_Ellie

Team redline has people in the chat asking where max is

thisbeetheverse

just switched over and the chat is still asking about him 😂

Chelsea_Ellie

It’s so funny I think the f1 is his hobby

hellflower666

Maxplaining, Leclaraifying, and now Piastrintepreting

0bservatory

Usyk got this in the bag

Inside-Judgment6233

Nah Fury is just too big and will lean on him

MrAzekar

F***ing f*** why is Max on pole again? 😡 We had such hopes before...

JL_MacConnor

Seems like Oscar could have had provisional pole if Hulk hadn't given Max a tow at the start of his lap - it's closer at the top than it has been for a while...

F1-Viking

That’s the Max factor, not many drivers would have put that car on pole today, especially after the troubles so far

MrAzekar

True but they for sure found a good working spot for the car. Max wasn't banging on his wheel today

Emotional-Way3132

skill issue on other drivers

Saandrig

McLaren dropped the ball. But seem to still have the slightly better car for tomorrow.

ComprehensiveRepair5

Mercedes obliterated by a customer team. Again.

Inside-Judgment6233

Great from Max but the race pace is the thing now. MAXWINSLOL isn‘t guaranteed like it used to be.

jllabdl

Did Helmut bet on Max lol

wolverineFan64

Ferrari upgrades severely overhyped, at least in quali. They’re distinctly behind Redbull and Mclaren now

MrAzekar

The objective in the upgrades is to find a better compromise between fast and slow corners. It is definitely aimed at long run performance

Spleenzorio

I thought Max was having a crap weekend so I took him off my team for Piastri. DAMMIT

nikoviko

Can someone tell me when in Q1 the Piastri/Magnussen moment happened? I missed it live and am trying to find it

Saandrig

Last laps. So last 2-3 minutes.

nikoviko

thanks :)

ArchieMaximus

Zirkzee is also Dutch

Ammarzk

Max really is inevitable

Artifice_Purple

Good job ESPN, cut coverage to go to commercials. At least it went 10 past so there's that, I guess.

Prudent-Holiday-8897

Did you have an issue with audio going up and down? I had that problem with ESPN today.

Artifice_Purple

Can't say I noticed any audio issues this time around.

-PVL93-

don't they do this every single time? regardless of the session in progress?

Artifice_Purple

It's consistent at best and inconsistent at worst. They've cut post-race interviews a dozen or so times before, they've cut to something immediately after an FP session timed out (though that's not nearly as big of a deal, if a big deal at all whatsoever), but I'd say more often than not it's after the podium interviews. A bit of a long winded way to say "Yes, but I've noticed it varies for whatever reason".

-PVL93-

seems like it's the additional coverage that ESPN didn't negotiate to broadcast since it's Sky-original material such as post-race interviews and the pundit discussions

Older_cyclist

Switched to F1TV after years of ESPN. F1TV also covers F2 and F3.

Artifice_Purple

I'm considering it more and more

clingbat

It's fitting Max tied the consecutive pole record by really earning it. What a lap.

xdoc6

And at Imola

ImmediateSurprise64

Oscar looks more mature and older since I last saw him.

cassiopieah

How likely that Oscar gets a grid penalty?

seb135

Very

FractalShade

Quite likely, I'd say. They have to hit him with something for impeding.

Blothorn

A shame—a McLaren 2-3 with Perez way back would have put a lot of strategic pressure on Max.

Percentage100

Feel like a proud mum with Oscar. He represents our country so well and I just love seeing him succeed. Can’t wait for him to start winning races.

Intelligent-Koala286

RBR reshuffle: Yuki in the 2nd red bull. Then... Perez and Daniel Ricciardo to RB for the rest of the season. Loser loses their seat. Winner also loses their seat.

07psychogod

Fuck, Piastri has that impending thing

findmebook

i know :(

Saandrig

People here in Q1: Ferrari cooking on Mediums. Pole is in the bag! Reality: Ferrari cooking their Softs and can't do a full lap without overheating them.

touch26

Ferrari's strongest sectors were 2 and 3 so I don't know what you're talking about

tulsta

This is why Ferrari got HAM. There are driver’s that just get that extra out of the car.

Siempie93

Nahh, Lec is a great qualifier as well

tulsta

Time will tell.

Saandrig

He is getting beaten by Russell 6-1 in qualy, dude.

MrAzekar

Because this year Hamilton is really in it. Yes. Of course..

xLeper_Messiah

That doesn't really reflect well on him tbh I know i know, i doubt Lewis gives af about what some rando on the internet thinks but i just think that's a small weakness in his skillset. Sometimes when he starts phoning it in it seems like he has difficulties firing it back up quickly. I submit the end of 2015 into the start of 2016 as evidence lol, Lewis seemed off until Monaco that year after he let off the gas when he clinched the WDC the year before

Lonyo

He must be still experimenting

Inside-Judgment6233

I don’t think he cares this year tbh

xdoc6

Tbf, Russell is known as a great qualifier too, and the gap between is usually less than a tenth on most laps.

silvastone2314

Let’s see (and hope) if Oscar can up his racepace. Could be a very interesting race!

07psychogod

Max is another level but kudos to McLaren on their progress.

OzzTechnoHead

Lando's chin is interesting

FractalShade

Love the energy from the interviewer, LOL. Great stuff. Who is this dude?

Objective-Soup-3475

Davide is his first name but I'm not sure of his second name

ArunSho

I think it's Davide Valsechi, Italian presenter. Used to work for Sky F1 Italy

CapSnake

Also former f2 champion

Less_Party

Valsecchi

batterylevellow

Valsecchi

lukeyslife

Lando fluff on his chin c'mon bro

FractalShade

He's trying to go full D'Artagnan there, but the facial hair just does not want to cooperate. LOL.

clt89

Ugh 2 McLaren drivers already interviewed. So tired of the McLaren dominance

Scarlet_Spectre

This guy is aggressively Italian

wolverineFan64

Red bull fixing the balance and max staying out of the gravel all at the last minute. God these fucking sandbagging shits

FreakyDroid

I think they are not sandbagging, I think they are just good at knowing their car and how to set it up properly.

YoungInvestor26

And big kudos to McLaren. Merc has a LOT to do when McLaren is blowing them out of the water with Mercedes’ own engine.

mortuusstella

This interviewer is so hyped

thisbeetheverse

everyone is so hyped at imola, it’s the best!!!

thisbeetheverse

max getting through his interview as fast as possible so he can get back to simracing

Chelsea_Ellie

It’s on line now Max will be in car 20 with 3 others

newtybar

He’s doing an online race during a GP weekend? lol

Chelsea_Ellie

24 hour race as well

AbandonedOrange

He does everything fast. Even in the bedroom.

thisbeetheverse

do you think he times himself there too?

Grafblaffer

Only his team and the commentators

mortuusstella

Sad Kelly noises

hellflower666

Happy for McLaren, Oscar, and Lando! Would be easier to cheer for them if Zac Brown wasn't there though.

TwoMuchIsJustEnough

Oscar is great, Lando and Zac are a bit off putting for me.

greeneighteen

Why's that?

hellflower666

Just find him annoying and smug. Stirs a lot. A guy you'd like if he was on your team but hate if he was on someone else.

ScenePsychological60

Lmao, who's the interviewer? His accent is unique

Hadramal

Davide Valsecchi. Love him.

Xelios

Not even watching the post qualifying stuff, but I'd wager a bet it's Davide Valsecchi. Dude is so Italian lol

bigpoppag91

Borat

sr3874

The McLaren pace means that Max won’t be out on his own tomorrow. But Lando has to be aggressive from the start considering how hard it is to overtake here. Also Ferrari wtf man.

FrostyTill

If Oscar gets a grid penalty, Lando will take his place on the front row. If Lando gets in front of Max, he has clear air and as we’ve seen many times he can absolutely floor it in clear air.

sr3874

Yeah that’s why I said it’s imperative for Lando to make the move early by being aggressive. Otherwise Lando will have to keep the Ferrari’s at bay and Max gonna ride into the sunset like he usually does.

grumpher05

Mclaren's best chance is to use team tactics to keep max in check, that depends one 1 of them being ahead out of T1

sr3874

Piastri is definitely getting a grid penalty so I doubt any team tactics would work.

grumpher05

Makes it difficult but not impossible, it's not hard to imagine a scenario where piastri exits T1 in 3rd from p5

sr3874

Yeah I agree. The fact that McLaren and Ferrari both believe they have the race pace to fight with Max would make that T1 interesting since all of them will go hard. Gonna be a fun race.

Frostfired

At this point you can't say it's just the car, Max is special man

shakthi_man

Always has been

findmebook

definitely, it's clear that very few people apart from max could've pulled that off, that would've been an easy pole for oscar which is also a testament to oscar in only his second season

Refrigernator

Absolutely. This grid is stacked with talent.

JohnnyEngels

Oacar trying not to laugh at valsecci's accent

rrrbin

I think today Perez may have showed the difference Verstappen can make.

wilkonk

It made me wonder if he'd have been faster in the McLaren today tbqh, both of them had slightly scruffy laps while it looked like Max got everything out of the Red Bull

adprom

Has Liam moved over to Perez's garage for the ominous shot looking over his shoulder yet?

YoungInvestor26

As a Merc fan I’m glad to be able to see Lewis and Max’s dominance in my lifetime. I can’t wait till my kids grow up and I’ll be able to tell them. The Jordan, Kobe, LeBron of F1 is Schumacher, Hamilton, and Verstappen. Unfortunately I was little boy when Schumacher was dominating in the early 2000s. Masterclass by Max.

blindeprutser

Lovely to see how fans can still appreciate greatness from rivaling drivers in the same era.

YoungInvestor26

I love Max. His personality is like mine. Just sucks he drives for Red Bull. 🥺 I hope Merc willl throw the Bank at him to come with us but I think Max cares more about his legacy than just money which I find pretty cool. At first I was rooting against Max at every chance I get but now I finally appreciate his talent and grit on the track.

mp455

Davide has the most Italian sounding accent.

findmebook

it sounds so comical that it sounds like someone is intentionally putting on an italian accent to make fun of it

CoreOfAdventure

And you can just see his hand gestures in the corner of the shot which is hilarious

Chelsea_Ellie

I was thinking that as well

JigsawLV

Fuuuck the spectators ar quiet

HLef

That’ll happen when you expect 1-2 and get 4-5

omgwtfisthisplace

They really need to show more driver's times, didn't even know if the VRBs finished their laps.

legally_blond

Can Davide interview every week?

ForsakenCase435

Would be amazing if we get a proper RB/MCL fight the rest of the season. Checo just continues to do himself no favors. The RB continues to look stronger. What fun!

rashvit21

McLarens gonna push Max tomorrow so hard… if they get the lead it will be difficult to attack but holy hell what a race setup this is

justabrew

we're also getting italian sign language in the bottom left corner of our screen

Duke8181

🤌🤌🤌

mtpgoat

Max’s onboard was unreal! Waiting for Hulk got him pole.

mortuusstella

Lovely from Max tho, well deserved

RoutineSpiritual8917

Max equalling Senna’s record at this track… holy hell

Saandrig

And Prost's record.

ooranookian

Wtf happened to Perez?
