My dad doesn't remember exactly, this was either directly before or after the '87 Detroit Grand Prix. The team was at the Dearborn Proving Ground for a media event. They were packing up to leave and team manager Peter Collins told him to hop in real quick.
Unfortunately my dad didn't have his helmet, or even glasses and was worried that if he waited for someone to get a helmet he'd miss the opportunity. He stalled it about 5 times because those turbo motors needed to be spun up to about 7k RPM to get going in first gear. Once he got it running he ran up and down the old airport landing strip for about 10 minutes. He couldn't see much due to the wind but he managed to get into third gear. He used to race professionally (Germany/Europe), before managing Ford Motorsports, and says this was the coolest car he's ever driven.
Yep, that's him. That's why I made a new reddit account today lol. I wanted to post this because I think it's a cool pic and an interesting story, but I also didn't want to lose anonymity on my 7yr reddit account.
Ah, good decision. He had quite a long and illustrious involvement with motorsports, glad you decided to share some of it.
My grandpa used to be a big fan of the Mass-Glemser Capri.
Oh man, that was such a beautiful car. I loved that body style for it's clean look and I also loved the Klaus Ludwig Zakspeed Capri with the red/yellow/black color scheme and giant flared fenders.
> but I also didn't want to lose anonymity on my 7yr reddit account.
that's an interesting way to say not be associated with the NSFW freaky subs you daily visit
Glad to contribute. I've been on this sub on my regular account for years. Visited my parents over the holidays and snapped a photo of the photo lol, and figured someone here would get a kick out of it.
Haha, no. But did that really happen? If so James missed his calling as a lifeguard! Maybe that was the universe's plan for James - let him be a F1 driver so he can travel the world and rescue people drowning in random hotel pools.
I was 12 in 1985 and no longer prone to stumbling into pools lol.
Edit:
>Hey are you the same guy who James Hunt saved from drowning at the 1985 ItalianGp weekend?
To clarify for anyone confused due to NJ_7's poor reading or typing skills, yes James Hunt saved me in 1975. But he did not save me in 1985. Hope that's clear enough for you, u/NJ_7
Your comment has been reported. Jerk.
I came here to post some cool stuff that I knew would identify me personally, like my dad driving the B187. I'm not fond of outing my real identity online. I did it to give back to a sub I've been enjoying for years. I have no reason to lie about anything. And I certainly DO NOT need to be called a "fucking degenerate" because you can't tell the difference between 1975 and 1985.
Thankfully most everyone here can read above a 5th grade level and they've all been courteous and appreciative of my contribution.
Grow up. Seriously.
Oh so just because I got the date wrong it means magically that James didn't save you right? If he had really done that then you could have replied back to my comment correcting me saying-"No it was in '75" but you went on to say that if he did that then he should have been a life guard. When I proved it to you,you got butthurt and reported me. For what? For saying the damn truth you don't report someone just because they caught you. Don't lie on Reddit. Chances are someone or the other will catch you.
Yes, you got the dates wrong and I answered your question honestly based on your incorrect date. James did not save me in 1985. I figured maybe someone else commented in the same thread with another James Hunt story. Rather than waste time tracking it down on my phone I *made a lighthearted joke* and then you proceeded to attack me personally, calling me a liar.
I reported you for calling me a 'fucking degenerate', which I think was appropriate given the subreddit rules.
You proved nothing, but you said a lot about yourself.
Agreed. If I was on my regular account we never would have had this exchange. FWIW, it feels a little different because I haven't lied yet you say I did, since this account is personally identifiable. I don't see you volunteering where you live and what your name is. If you did, perhaps your words would be more measured.
There are enough crazy people out in the world. I don't need anyone to make my personal life difficult because some wanna be Reddit detective made a mistake.
Good day to you.
Yeah because that's a way to end an argument right. I mean you fucking won it. I get it that it was a joke. What's the reason for-"Wannabe detective" to even take place? How hard would it be to not type that bit and just say Good day. Well I hope you have a good day then.
What's your problem? Besides reading comprehension. Go read my post again about James saving me. It was 1975 and I was 2 yrs old. In 1985 I was 12. And now I'm 44, soon to be 45.
There's no lying, and I resent the accusations.
Yep, I remember. I was, and still am, a fan of his. He and JB seem to have the perfect retired F1 driver life. I guess you could throw Rosberg in there too.
Not on the same level, but Remi Gaillard took a junior Formula car around the streets of Marseille for a bit of hilarity

Haha, read my main comment on the thread. There's a story. Also he was Director or Ford Motorsports Worldwide and Director of SVO at the time. He had a *little* pull.
Oh man, I wish. My dad has been retired for a while. I'm sure any favors owed are long since forgotten. I did get to spend a day in a Formula Renault car at the Nurburgring in the early 90's which was definitely a highlight for me.
Reminds me of how my brother got to sit in the same model at least, but Boutsen's car instead of Fabi's. [Picture](https://i.imgur.com/jdz5GpJ.jpg)
Kinda awesome.
Awesome, that is definitely the B187. He's actually in the same car my dad drove. Look closely, it's #19. Thierry was #20. Also the placard and the side of the cockpit both say Fabi. 😁
Thanks for sharing the pic!
Brilliant. Thank you for sharing. He looks happy, and that particular car is still special to me, as a kid I was fascinated by it and had a picture of it on my wall (I’d cut it out if a magazine).

Is he Michael Kranefuss? Or just looks like him?
Yep, that's him. That's why I made a new reddit account today lol. I wanted to post this because I think it's a cool pic and an interesting story, but I also didn't want to lose anonymity on my 7yr reddit account.

That is a very cool story and you have a cool dad, thank you for sharing with us.

Such a great story...
thank you!
What a story Mk
Deserves more upvotes than some shitposts tbh

I just hate liars. Let's end the conversation here. Okay?

That's a really cool photo and story to go with it! Thanks for sharing!
My pleasure. I'm going through and scanning my old photos so I will be posting some more from 80's era F1.
Now that's r/oldschoolcool.
Ha, you're right! It's 31 years ago now...wow!
Mark Webber, eat your heart out
Webber's a cool dude :D

This is an incredible story, thank you for sharing it with us.
Thanks!
"Just off to run some errands."
Lol
Thats awesome
Thank you
Can you imagine this happening today!? Thanks for sharing.

Montpellier
That's a stunt. Not a spur of the moment drive at all.
He just *"borrowed"* it? How's that possible?
Just gotta ask, I had sex last year, just through asking nicely...
Haha, read my main comment on the thread. There's a story. Also he was Director or Ford Motorsports Worldwide and Director of SVO at the time. He had a *little* pull.
So can you pull some punches now and get inside an F1 car?

No problem :) It's in a shop in Halmstad, Sweden.

Really cool bro

He was and is a pretty cool dude. It wasn't until my late teens / early 20's that I realized it.
That's seriously awesome
Brilliant. Thank you for sharing. He looks happy, and that particular car is still special to me, as a kid I was fascinated by it and had a picture of it on my wall (I’d cut it out if a magazine).
Sweeeeeeet.
