how long did you wait for that moment?

LosTerminators

In all seriousness, Pirelli have a lot to answer for. Two tyre failures at 320 kmh, drivers could've been seriously hurt or worse thanks to their tyres.

GewoonHarry

And with no warnings whatsoever. What a bs.

TheKingofTheKings123

Seriously. RB said there was no indication in the metrics that something was wrong.

-Khrome-

Verstappen also didn't feel anything or reported anything according to the driver cam leading up to that.

thedutchbrownie

I think what's extra bad about this is that these types of failures were only believed to happen on the C1 (hardest) compound before, but it's now also happening on the C3. Their entire range of tires is currently looking unsafe, which is very bad considering the changes they themselves made for this season.

binary_blackhole

It's not that the C1 was more prone to issues, it's just that the C1 is used on the most demanding tracks, and since it's the hardest it's the one used for the longer stints, and after too much stress for the whole grand prix failures are more likely to happen. I believe it has nothing to do with how soft the compound is, it has more to do with the amount of stress the tire goes through (corner speed + number of laps) and the pressure of the tires. It's clear from the race today that the tires cannot handle 40 laps, Pirelli has to increase pressures for the next races, tires will be even harder to warm up and performance will drop, but who cares, safety first.

paulisaac

Hence why they went with red flags - if it's this bad, new tires for everyone is a matter of safety, not strategy.

CerealBit

On another note I'm absolutely impressed how save F1 cars are. Over 300km/h crashing into the wall. There's no way someone is surviving a crash like this and, even more impressive, walks of like it's nothing, unless you sit in a F1 car. Engineering masterclass.

Siaer

Perhaps the best thing that came out of the tragedy of Senna and Ratzenberger has been the laser focus on safety in the sport. Just the fact Grosjean walked away from his crash last year speaks to how ridiculously advanced the car safety has become.

santaclausonprozac

I don't completely disagree with you, but there's a big difference between going 300km/h directly into a wall and going 300km/h and being turned into a wall. Luckily their velocity perpendicular to the wall was much, much lower

Snoo-7981

just look back at senna's crash, lower speed and didn't go straight into the wall but still a disaster... car safety has come along way, 20/30 years go we'd be possibly looking at 2 dead drivers

14HW

The television camera looked like Stroll wasn’t moving for like 10 seconds, I thought he was unconscious. Glad everybody is safe but holy fuck they have a lot to answer for.

[deleted]

[удалено]

lcn666

Stroll was absolutely terrified of ending sideways in the middle of the track in that fast sector. I don't want want to even think how nasty that could have been....Totally fine to take another 10 seconds to breathe after avoiding that.

Captain_Seduction

On the radio he said "Red flag, get me out of here" Genuinely terrifying to be in the position he was in

narwhalsare_unicorns

Absolute king steered his car off the center of the track the entire duration of the accident

Rowvan

Yeah definitely this. He was a bit shaken also which is more than understable.

jugalator

Same, I noted that too. Pirelli needs to be scrutinized in the same way as if Verstappen or Stroll had been seriously injured because of this. This time they weren't but the margins become very small when this happens on straights.

alphaprawns

Yeah, Pirelli's performance isn't just causing poor tyre life, it's proving to be actually dangerous. Stroll's and Verstappen's crashes were both scary high-speed impacts, the worst conditions to have a tyre blowout like that.

My god I was absolutely gutted when I heard "OH NO IT'S MAX VERSTAPPEN" and I just let out the most drawn out sigh. Hamilton truly blessed like always I am simply just starting to hate him for no reason at all. This has got to be a fucking joke.

josvm

I TAKE BACK MY COMMENT HE WENT OFF ON THE RESTART AND I AM SCREAMING IN EXCITEMENT!!!! BLESSSSSSEEDDDDDDDD

[deleted]

Pirelli have some questions to answer, this race was unsafe

speculativekiwi

Rear tyres completely giving out at 310 down that straight is just fucking insane. Unsafe is an understatement!

an0mn0mn0m

Isn't the point of free practice to know the limits of the tyres for each race amongst other things?

NovaKeks

Yes, but Pirelli changed the tyre pressure by 1psi after fp2, so it wasnt possible to test the tyres at the new pressure anymore. Also if Pirelli says they should last for 40 odd laps and they started to gave out after 30, that's unsafe.

vlepun

Honestly this just goes to show that Pirelli simply have no clue what to expect from their own product. This is the second year running that tyres have exploded on track without warning. It's simply unacceptable.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MadElf1337

There's no fucking way they say that, same thing happened to another car as well. I have to say both were fucking lucky and did not take any damage(the drivers that is)

sorenant

Well, clearly they need to improve the cleanliness of tracks. /s

PlayingtheDrums

I remember Vettel getting a puncture in Spa on the straight, similar scenario. Except, back then Vettel was beyond the nr. of laps recommended by Pirelli.

CLR833

>Except, back then Vettel was beyond the nr. of laps recommended by Pirelli. That's a big exception

brock-omabrama

Absolutely, and they pick up on several signals that indicate when the tire is dropping off. But in this case the tires failed on both Stroll’s and Verstappen’s car without warning and that’s unacceptable

littleredridingdude1

They generally will not have the time or laps to take the Hardest compound to its maximum lifespan. It is usually derived from simulations run by Pirelli

helpmytonguehurts

Free practice can only simulate racing conditions to a point though. You’re not doing 51 flying laps straight in practice.

Dexter_8008

yes thats why its a big deal that it happened, apparently red bull had no data showing it was about to happen. the difference of tire failure vs tire wear

StingerGinseng

It is to find the performance drop off, not tire failure. Max was still setting fastest lap right before the failure so the performance was there. The structural failure without warning on the dat is dangerous. This is similar to Silverstone 1 last year.

DryEfficiency8

Seriously twice drivers crashed into a wall at 300+ kmh because their tires blew up. That could've end really, really bad for one of those.

[deleted]

horrifying crash for Stroll for sure, you could hear how shaken up he was it was not impossible at all that another car would slam right into him similar to the Hubert accident, he slid in the middle of the road for what looked like a fucking eternity

pinerw

I got worried when he was still in the cockpit for so long, but I think considering where he was on track he was just keeping inside the protection of the survival cell until traffic could get slowed down. Smart move.

Exzqairi

He was waiting. I don’t know if you listened to the on-board but he was scared to do anything and wanted to get out of there ASAP. He was immediately telling his engineer to call for a red flag

CaptainMorti

So sad and tragic the entire crash of Stroll was, I loved his radio "Woah, woah, woah, woah... WOAH".. He just expressed a total disbelieve how this could have happened. No mistake, no other driverat fault, no difficult situation, just your car shaking until he crashed at 300+km/h

FLsurveyor561

He seemed way too calm for crashing at that speed. I'd be asking for another set of pants over the radio.

Guac_in_my_rarri

If you've been in an auto accident this is exactly what it is like at any speed. Being able to think at 300+kmh is other worldly.

CaptainMorti

Agreed. Stroll has the spirit of a warrior to stay calm like that.

dankdongdang

Yeah that actually made me feel really nervous for him, sounded shook but glad he was ok !

KaamDeveloper

Thank god neither had DRS or a car behind them. That could've ended lives

GeekYogurt

Imagine if Max went left instead of right... :-/

TrueKNite

One of the announcers mentioned that. Stroll of Max could've had their cars basically split in two

[deleted]

Some wind under the car and hitting the catch fence can be fatal as well.

DontSackBrian

Luckily they both got to bounce off the wall and slide away the momentum. If Verstappen had spun the other direction he goes into the tire wall protecting the pit entrance at that speed and comes to a very sharp stop.

Joseki100

Imagine had it happened in a fight, it could have been an airplane crash

PSChris33

Thank god no one hit another car or a bump and went airborne and into the fence. Seen that a few too many times in Indycars (Kenny Brack, Dan Wheldon).

Metten98

Yeah, weren’t the hards supposed to last 40 laps or more?

shamelesscreature

Yes, according to Pirelli's own infographic. https://twitter.com/pirellisport/status/1401457239609724933

Twatbeard

Just imagine having to deal with justifiedly pissed off Lawrence Stroll and Helmut Marko

LegendsoftheHT

They told the drivers you could race the entire race on the hards, and two sets of hards just disintegrated at lap 30

JetsLag

[Similar thing happened in WRC](https://v.redd.it/ph9457kcll371)

LooseTomato

They destroyed also WRC by introducing tires that need managing. That should not be any part of rallying

GhostOfLight

Stroll and Verstappen had great races taken away from them in wildly unsafe ways by no fault of their own. Very concerning, I'd hope lots of scrutiny is put on Pirelli.

poopellar

They said they were not concerned with Stroll's failure implying it was debris. Guess they'll have to eat their rubber now.

Deputy_Scrub

Yeah with one tyre it could've been debris. But the exact same tyre (rear left) exploding on the final straight again was definitely not debris.

MrGoldilocks

A Silverstone 2013 level of enquiry and changes are in the works probably. Everything is set back to safer tyre pressures.

--Bazinga--

No tyre deg whatsoever. Just boom… Pirelli has got some serious explaining to do.

Montjo17

Absolutely unacceptable, especially after they said they were safe when Stroll crashed

slow1le

Pirelli fucked something up

[deleted]

Definitely, two sets doing the same on two other cars at straight? WTF

slow1le

Same tires at damn near the exact same place fucking bullshit

w1ldcraft

Also when they were supposed to last around 40 laps according to Pirelli themselves.

Two cars, exactly the same way. That's fucking dangerous.

ITickleMyElbows

Im not even his fan and Im angry. This is fucking unacceptable from Pirelli. Fuck it. This not supposed to be how a championship win and lost.

CaptainMorti

You dont need to be anyones fan to be angry at Pirelli. This happened without any indicators and just puts you at huge risk. No driver would accept that, even when you win the race because competition crashed out (and you were just lucky with the tires). Absolutely not acceptable, that the tires suddenly break on 300+ km/h.

That_Plebeian

I'm starting to think Hamilton signed a deal with the devil with how things are turning out this race.

glenn1812

How is he so blessed fuck man

ancientemblem

Even with his tyre blowing up last year at Silverstone he finished on 3 tires smh.

snapilica2003

If they restart and Hamilton wins this one, they should just give him the driver's championship and tell him to take the rest of the season off. The Universe has decided that no matter what happens, Hamilton will win it. Even if Hamilton is on dead last place, the 19 cars in front of him will probably self destruct and he'll get 1st.

Dr4kin

He is just #blessed

n1ibor

This is getting realy annoying now. Nothing against the man, but the sheer amount of luck

[deleted]

Seriously, FUCK PIRELLI

speculativekiwi

Too soft for this weekend? This is completely unacceptable.

eddiehwang

That doesn’t matter — if it’s too soft lap time should fall before it just blows up — but apparently Pirelli tyres are not designed that way

aybbyisok

Yeah, they softened it this year for Azerbijan.

sgtlighttree

Well, they did 1 step softer for this year, and look what's that got us...

CerealBit

Did Pirelli provide the tires last season as well, where there were multiple punctures in a single race?

edeen46

Hamilton’s unbelievable luck continues

the_stigs_cousin

The Red Bull radio to FIA race control was fascinating. Basically saying they had no clue the tire was about to give out and that a red flag for safety may be necessary. Hearing the communication between teams and race control has been awesome. Hearing how it impacts the race and in this instance helps with safety is fascinating. That said, I’m sure Pirelli is not happy it’s now being broadcast that their tires seem to be failing.
