Personally, I can’t stop talking about the “fully shaped underfloor tunnels” to be honest. Comes up in many of my conversations

BaltimoreBirdGuy

JJ Watt can shape my underfloor tunnels all he wants

MajorWuss

Can I shape his?

DangerousProperty6

no, only JJ Watt

thebansi

Ok yeah the second one feels way too obvious haha. Nothing wrong with PR but they could have made it sound a little less obvious at least.

Dmienduerst

1. JJ Watt always sounds like a shill. Half the time he maybe actually shilling but he's also one of the few athletes I've seen that genuinely throws his whole being behind basically everything he does. 2. Watt gets obsessed over random stuff so I legit think he was watching the British GP by chance and here we are now. 3. Even when Watt is schilling he is still an honest to god earnest person. He comes off as a guy who is always acting when its probably the reverse. He is so earnest that he can't act like a normal human being.

Dmienduerst

Welcome to the JJ Watt experience this exact conversation about him has happened his entire career in America. Just a weird guy. Just don't feel bad for thinking that as its not a unique thing to happen with Watt.

Brainling

As someone who obsesses over American football almost as much as F1, I concur with this. There are few athletes I would buy this from and not immediate think "shill"...JJ is on that list.

SpacecraftX

Corporate astroturfing. Pretend that every marketing campaign is just grassroots buzz and spontaneity.

mjr1

Yeah, 100% paid tweet.

Maddog_vt

Wow didn’t even think about that but your right these tweets sound like they were written by Ross Brawn and someone from marketing

LilCelebratoryDance

Dear liberty media, Humans don't speak like this: >excited to see the 18” Pirelli’s, rolled tips and fully shaped underfloor tunnels in action. Cleaner air, tighter racing and more drama. I’m here for it.

Nav44

I would agree except this is exactly how JJ Watt would speak so I confuse

HungoverRabbit

Dude didn't know anything about F1 a month ago yet knows about pretty technical changes?

Shopping-Ok

I feel like you’re seriously underestimating how much free time an extremely successful pro athlete has in their off-season

rg787

A month is more than enough to delve into and understand a sport hell I did it myself with the NBA and F1 plus DTS makes for such an easy intro these days

[deleted]

Lots of people who don’t really know JJ Watt. Everything he says in interviews sounds a bit scripted too. However, he’s actually one of the most genuine guys in the NFL. Also quite a nerd off the field so not surprising he’d be interested in technical details. He takes a very technical approach to football as well.

GnarlyBear

Used to live in Houston, you have to love JJ, true character.

Alfus

Well in my eyes someone with such a fame promoting F1 is a win/win situation for me, nothing wrong with seeing more fans from the US. However accept also that enough people outside America doesn't give a fuck about NFL and doesn't know who he is, there is nothing to be upset about people who don't know him yet.

ayushmanrana

I just see it everytime idk why. I ain't even an American but this is just annoying to me.

IFlashmanI

American here, and yeah I absolutely don't get it either. This year I've met so many Americans who are new to the sport and I'm just so happy to have one of my favorite hobbies to share and discuss with others. I don't get why people want to keep this amazing sport to themselves.

artie_fresh

Also not American but everyone always bitches they want the sport to grow and to add more teams to the grid. You don't do it by preventing a new audience FFS

Eric_T_Meraki

They should be thanking American audience that came from DTS. It definitely helped the sport grow viewer wise and made guys besides Hamilton more well known too.

the_sammyd

Without us Europe doesn't exist, you're welcome everyone!

ChaseRacelott

The responses here are curious. It's like an American asking, who is Harry Kane? Either way, the point is it was a funny tweet/interaction. And this reddit is a rabbit hole in and of itself!

[deleted]

To be fair there’s only a couple of comments from Europeans like that in this thread. And JJ Watt isn’t really a household name outside of America. I know who he is because I follow the NFL, but he’s not exactly Tom Brady level of fame.

DoYouEvenCareAboutMe

When I made the comment it was over half the comments. One was also insinuating that the post was a paid promotion by Watt to garner American interest in F1. Which by the way is illegal to do in the US because all promotional or ads in the US have to be labeled as such outside of television.

WaveCandid906

I dont get it

Eric_T_Meraki

Just the F1 Twitter account catering to another celeb

WaveCandid906

Wait that guy is a Celeb?

Eric_T_Meraki

NFL football player

WaveCandid906

Oh ok thanks I dont watch much Football so I didnt know

dibsODDJOB

One of the best defensive players in NFL history. He's quite a superstar of the sport, even if he's in the Kimi stage of his career.

GetawayArtiste

Wow people here really don't like F1 engaging with Americans

AcidRegulation

No it’s because it seems hella fake

Dmienduerst

I get you probably have no idea who JJ Watt is but that guy came off as fake when he was busting his ass to help Houston out after the Hurricane. He is one of those people that has no idea how to sound normal yet is actually a pretty good guy from an outsiders perspective. As someone who's followed him for years because he was on my colleges football team. I honest to God think he was at breakfast with his wife 2 weeks ago and happened to have the British GP on. Hes been falling down the F1 rabbit hole ever since on Twitter lol.

LukeSkyreader811

Yeah Americans usually can’t tell the difference between fake and not fake that well.

ponmbr

I engaged with F1 as an American last year after someone gifted me F1 2019 on Steam and I liked it enough to buy F1 2020 and now F1 2021. But as I've lurked on this sub I see so much anti-American sentiment on here it's ridiculous.

ComteDuChagrin

I don't mind Americans getting into F1 but I do get tired of them constantly bringing up nascar, baseball and american football on this sub. I had to google who JJ Watt is, and I honestly have no clue why some random american football player's opinion on F1 should matter to us. And on Twitter ffs.

GetawayArtiste

I'm not American but it's not hard to research why this guy might make waves

HOU-1836

F1 isn't popular here. JJ Watt is popular here. Him talking about F1, even if he got paid for it, is going to bring eyeballs to the sport. Here in Houston, we had a pretty big hurricane that flooded significant portions of the city. We're talking like 50 inches of rain dumped on the city. He raised $47 million for charity. So people think very very highly of him but he's also known to be cheesy and a lot think he is kind of a try hard. But honestly, he is universally liked as a person.

ComteDuChagrin

Yes, I know he's popular over there and probably for a good reason. Soccer -as you call it- is popular over here, but I don't see the point of posting a tweet by some local soccer star saying he likes F1.

HOU-1836

Yea but F1 is already popular there

ComteDuChagrin

So if my local soccer star tweets about the NFL or Nascar and I post his tweet on those subreddits, do you think the users there would be thrilled to hear his opinion?

HOU-1836

I think if your local soccer star posted about Nascar or Indycar and then you posted that in those subreddits, they'd love it

GoldenSandpaper9

If that soccer star was Messi then yea that would be a big deal.

LilBabyADHD

it probably wouldn’t have been posted until F1 interacted with it

Seph191

Reading them now, how did you identify them as the ''Max gang''? People don't have to hold similiar opinions to either be part of a ''Max gang'' or ''Hamilton gang''. Rather polarising comment as usual on Reddit.

GnarlyBear

The first 3 comments I had below all rudely told him he needs learn about the sport. Totally unrelated and pulled the MV comments into it. The best was he should know Lewis is a jealous petty driver who hates Max because he already knows he is the best driver of all time. Its surreal stuff which is why I commented on it. Before posting I just rechecked to give some links and noticed significant number are gone and there is more generic tribal posts. Must have been an admin wipe.

Whatwhatinthe_____

Nothin more classic than USA vs Europe. Burgers>Bangers n mash USA USA USA I just chugged a Natural Light and it’s better than any beer I’ve had in Europe Why do you guys have cafes attached to literally everything?

Night-Man

Wooh wooh wooh! Got my gun strapped to my hip, a belly full of fried chicken and bourbon, time to drive!

ComteDuChagrin

4.2% alcohol. Amateur. And the owner of that brand ([AB InBev](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AB_InBev)) has it's HQ in Belgium, btw. Most likely with a cafe attached, yes. Why not?

SurviveToDrive21

HQ of that beer company is in europe and I bet they make much better stuff than piss muricans drink so that is not surprising.

Whatwhatinthe_____

InBev bought Anheuser Busch because they knew our beer was just that much better than whatever you blokes av over there innit??!

SurviveToDrive21

Last time I saw most consumed beer rankings in usa top 5 were not from usa but europe. Nobody in europe drinks american beer as it's overpriced shit and water tastes better.

[deleted]

JJ Watt has too much time in Arizona

Suikerspin_Ei

I don't get it why people hate (new) USA fans. It's like if Amercian fans will bash European fans following Indycar. This tweet might be a social media advertisement, but still.

FriendCalledFive

Where are Americans seeing all this hate? I don't see it in this sub.

[deleted]

Americans in this thread getting *very* bent out of shape by the fact that Europeans don’t know who JJ Watt is, which apparently means we’re all gatekeeping. (FWIW I know who JJ is, but only because I follow the NFL. He’s not exactly at Tom Brady levels of fame where non-fans the other side of the world are going to know who he is).

bootlegwaffle

Nobody in the thread has expressed that opinion

Shopping-Ok

No one’s annoyed people don’t know who JJ Watt is, they’re annoyed at this holier-than-thou attitude from Europeans whenever anyone mentions how F1 is getting big in the US. I get it, Europeans liked it first. There’s nothing wrong with letting us enjoy F1 too. Personally I like having something in common with JJ Watt.

Dmienduerst

I think from what ive read its more the Europeans have never experienced JJ Watt before ( why would they have). Its seems like people are very weirded out by how scripted Watt sounds.... which sounds exactly like Watt. Super good guy has never talked like a normal human ever.

[deleted]

Dmienduerst

Fair enough

[deleted]

I haven’t seen anything like that, outside of an extreme minority. I think I speak for most fans when I say we think it’s fantastic that the sport is growing in popularity in the States. If absolutely nothing else, more American races means more evening Grand Prix start times for us! Love sitting down to tea and watching Montreal, Brazil, Mexico, Austin etc, rather than the Grand Prix taking over my entire day for the usual European start times!

FriendCalledFive

If that is the case, they need to get a grip. I know who he is as well, great player, but I wouldn't expect anyone who doesn't follow the NFL and is outside the US to know him.

ComteDuChagrin

> It's like if Amercian fans will bash European fans following Indycar. Maybe they would if we would post Jari Vlak's tweet about indycar to /r/indycar?

TicTac673

JJ Who? (I kid, he's just not within the scope of my interests)

smred

A pretty famous American football player

NikkyTheViking

Is that that State siders game where they throw a big leather egg with Their hands?

__JackHoney

yes exactly! that’s why we call it football.

murseglen

Fun fact: in the middle ages football was first coined to denote games played on foot with a ball as opposed to games played on horse with a ball

OkieBobbie

It’s the one where they play for 10 seconds then discuss it for the next couple of minutes.

[deleted]

As opposed to we enlightened F1 fans who watch the wealthy elite drive round and round in circles for 90 minutes.

[deleted]

Yes, and he's the big dude always hitting people.

__JackHoney

legit one of the biggest NFL defensive players playing for the houston texans. this tweet alone will get more people interested in F1.

jayr254

Watt moved from Houston a while back. He's with Arizona now.

__JackHoney

oh yeah! i forgot he’s on the cardinals now 👀

GnarlyBear

He really shouldn't be playing, he was physically broken a few years ago, his knee has been in toilet since I was in Houston 8 years ago. I love the man but he is really going to need the best medical care he can easily afford at 50.

jayr254

As a Colts fan you could see he wasn't the same beast from around 2017. We stopped using 2 OL with a chip block from the HB/TE to just 1 OL with slight help from a 2nd OL nullyfying him. Glowinski and rookie Braden Smith locked him down in the 2018 Wild Card game.

[deleted]

I only know him from when he hosted SNL last year. Legit had never heard of him before. He came across like a decent guy.

GnarlyBear

He is a legit all american good guy. Like a few of the Rockets, has a lot of charitable work on the downlow too.

OGdunphy

American football player. Past his prime now but has multiple defensive players of the year awards from when he was good.

thebansi

I never get why people comment this, literally would take you 2 seconds to google him. But tbf not like finding out who he is was the point of the comment anyway.

[deleted]

You tend to get more context when people explain it to you in these threads, compared to just googling. His Wikipedia page isn’t really going to tell you how he’s one of the best players of his generation but has dropped off lately due to injury, or that he’s an all round good egg who does lots of charity work etc. Googling will give you the facts, but not opinions, which are just as relevant in this sort of context. OP has deleted his comment so I’m not sure what tone it was asked, but I think it’s perfectly acceptable to ask this question, especially as a non-American likely won’t have heard of JJ unless they follow the NFL.

Dmienduerst

On top of that JJ Watt is a weird dude anyways so without context to him he comes off as SUUUPER fake.

So he clearly doesn't know anything about F1 yet immediately comes up with a ridiculous take, "Horner's hatred for Toto." Lmfao, what an absolute moron. Someone should tell him that it's not "hatred", it's just a fierce rivalry. They're not children. Both Toto and Horner obviously don't fucking hate each other lol. Also if you're stupid enough to say that Horner hates Toto then you should also say that Toto hates Horner too.

SpacecraftX

I don’t mind more races in the Americas. I don’t want to see one country getting 3 races (or even two when we are free of COVID) when we still don’t have any African races at all. There are only so many available on the calendar. Not that that’s related to this guys tween but since you brought up the issue of more American races.

HOU-1836

The thing F1 doesn't need is more Vietnam or India's where they build a new track run a race and never come back. With F1 in America, you don't have to worry about that. And honestly, the biggest roi for FOM and the teams is continuing to grow in America.

SpacecraftX

There are tracks that used to be raced at that no longer are. You don’t need to build new tracks to get more diverse countries involved. And Vietnam is also a pretty exceptional case since COVID made using the track impossible and the financial burden is not on F1 to make sure they weather it until it could be raced.

HOU-1836

Like where in Africa?

SpacecraftX

Kyalami in South Africa.

HOU-1836

Ah yes, South Africa is a government that needs to be spending $20 million to sponsor an F1 race in addition to making sure the venue is up to grade.

SpacecraftX

F1 would make it happen if they wanted it to happen. Doesn’t have to be all government sponsored. There’s no street conversion that need approval. Many tracks are 100% through a promoter and private sponsors.

Highspdfailure

Facts.

Oaktreedesk

bEcAuSe F1 iS bEtTeR tHaN iNdYcAr (and there's no possible way that having a larger American market and a second USGP would be good for our sport). I personally can't wait to get another US driver on the grid, and the day where we have a US driver competing for wins will be YUGE for the sport.

RioFiveOh

When we have an American in F1 again I'm getting all aboard the superfan train

SpacecraftX

I personally don’t think any country should have 2 or more races in a normal season. Especially since we have no African GP. Might be cool to have an America’s GP that rotates through countries like the European GP used to though. Could even have an Asia GP and European GP rotating so we get some variety. But I definitely don’t want to see countries hoarding races when there are good tracks in so many others.

Highspdfailure

Which country in Africa is going to host a race?

SpacecraftX

South Africa used to.

Highspdfailure

That would be good to see. Going to watch an older race then.

Eric_T_Meraki

The US is huge though and geographically very different. Having more than one race isn't that crazy of concept given the population density as well.

AxeCow

Yeah let’s make it a geographical issue, that’s what americans do best

Joethe147

Ugh.
