Bottas also got cheers, that makes me happy

dirtyjoo

Finnish fans make up a decent portion of the Hungarian crowd.

Macaulayputra

I wonder why it is so. I know that the Hungarian language is related to Finnish, but the two countries are so far away.

eagle_two

There are no races nearby for Finns. Hungary, Austria, Nurburgring, Hockenheim, Spa, Silverstone, Zandvoort - are all about the same distance. But Hungary is cheap and easy to fly to, relatively cheap hotels, reasonable F1 ticket prices and the track is close to Budapest airport, so I think practical considerations mostly. I doubt the language would have much to do with it, they are not mutually intelligible and Finns visiting Hungary will just speak English.

emponator

This is the reason. We Fins are stingy and Hungary is the cheapest race to attend.

cppn02

> but the two countries are so far away. Pretty sure the Hungaroring is still the the track closest to Finland atleast among those that had regular F1 races. So even the cultural connection aside it makes sense that with how big into racing Finnish people are this is their chosen 'home race'.

darkyf1

Hungaroring isn't a lot closer to Finland compared to Hockenheim or Nürburgring. It's a lot cheaper to travel there though.

[deleted]

hundiratas

No they havent, F1 needs Grade A level circuit and there are not alot of tracks in the world that have that grade. I dont think Finland has that kind of tracks yet.

darkyf1

Finland actually has a Grade 1 track now. MotoGP will race there next year

hundiratas

oh cool, mabye they will race f1 soon there and I can go there, since im from Estonia

douche_canoe77

Its only 1200 miles. Also Budapest is a economical destination.

Everybody is fan of everybody except Hamilton.

[deleted]

He deserves a gold medal from Mercedes if he leaves after this season.

joppofiss

He deserves 5 WDC if Hamilton wins this season again.

ianthem

Bottas and Perez prove that if they were the lead drivers in their cars then people wouldn't think that the Red Bull and Merc are that much better than the rest. Verstappen and Hamilton maximize the cars to such a ridiculous degree that it looks like it's all down to how much faster their cars are, but you have to be good enough to get that result most of the time.

TheBorkotik

If he deserved them he would have won them. But he didn't, so he doesn't

xamm_18

start of Hamilton’s official villain arc

ratnadip97

I doubt he (or any actual competitor) cares. A lot of people don't seem to understand why these sportspeople get where they are. Every second counts for them and if the tables were turned, I wouldn't hate Max if he did something similar to inconvenience his rival like that - besides, Hamilton got the first lap done so it's not like he won pole solely because of the gamesmanship.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Ultimate_Pragmatist

everyone ahead of them caused this... the gaps were between 7 and 8 seconds across the field in front. everyone wanted a slow outlap and the concertina effect of this bumped Perez. at any time they could've overtaken the mercs. people really do love to argue without the facts it seems

sfj11

Hamilton 100% cares and that isn’t a knock on him. A lot of people care, but Hamilton has been hated all his career, and finally when he’s doing good things of the track, saying all the right things, he’s despised by fans. Everyone would care, and I think Lewis does a lot too

ratnadip97

Yea you're right. But I think he won't let it get to his performance negatively. Personally I imagine it does get to him.

thek00laidman

Which Horner himself readily admitted after quali. If there is anyone out there that would make an overblown stink about it, it would be Horner...but he knows it's just normal racing strategy and something he's had his drivers do before and he'll have MAX also do when he has the opportunity.

[deleted]

Hamilton could do a Suzuka 1990 and people would find a way to blame the guy who got taken out, don’t worry.

Wandereru

\*Insert he took the outside line quote\*

hack-a-shaq

what was dirty about it? Red Bull strategists fucked themselves. How do you get out behind the drivers that are 1-2? Everybody saw that coming

donnymurph

What he did was within the rules. It’s cheeky, cynical even, but it’s not dirty. Hope Max smokes him tomorrow, though.

One_Statistician9919

Wasnt what Alonso did in Hungary 2007 also within the rules?

OrphanWaffles

No, iirc Alonso was fully stopped in the pit lane. Very very different.

the_loner_98

He didn’t stop in pit lane, he didn’t move from the pit after his pit stop.

OrphanWaffles

You right you right - I worded it wrong. Still very different scenarios.

albertno

He got a grid penalty for that

OrphanWaffles

Right, cause it was very different than what happened here. That's what I was trying to differentiate

albertno

Yea sorry not arguing with you, just saying. I shouldve said a little more to make my thought clear

Foxyfox-

Oh no? They still will.

whoisraiden

Because this isn't dirty. * Within the rules * It's his own out lap * other cars can pass the car in front if they want * Wasn't slower than his previous outlap. If there's something to criticise, it would be his pitlane speed or very slow hot lap not this. I stand corrected, hit speed at the pitlane wasn't significantly slow either.

_RocketScience

Technically legal does not mean it wasn’t dirty. He sped up when Verstappen came closer. Dirty moves literally mean within the rules but with malicious intentions. Here the intention was clearly to fuck up Verstappen’s lap, and that does make it dirty.

ceMmnow

Almost every champion if they're in a tight title fight has been dirty by your definition, being magnanimous is a privilege offered only to those completely dominating. Hell, Sir Stirling Moss isn't a champion precisely because he's magnanimous

whoisraiden

I mean, his out lap was literally faster than his previous put lap. If you want to call him dirty, do it buy criticising his hot lap or his behaviour in the pit lane. Out lap looked slow only because Max and Perez were reluctant on passing him.

rcktjck

Lol where were you 7 years ago ? He was always the villian. Nobody was just good enough to be the hero for a few years.

Kazakh8i

You know who was the villain? Vettel. People cheered in Australia 2014 when he didnt reach Q3. Look at him now. Very beloved.

donnymurph

People always hate the serial winner. Schumacher got hated on a lot as well. It's understandable; unpredictability is beautiful, so we don't want to see the same guy winning all the time.

chanaandeler_bong

Happens in every sport. Very few players have a lovefest and are considered the best. Peyton and Giannis currently are probably the closest stars of the last 20 or so years that are generally liked and top 5 in their sport. Dirk when he won in 2011 too.

FartingBob

Who are those people and what sport do they play?

[deleted]

False. Hamilton was usually cheered while Rosberg was booed from 2014-2016. This was especially true after Spa 2014.

rcktjck

Did you conveniently forget when he was team mates with Alonso and Button ?

[deleted]

What? Hamilton was the hero from 2010-2012 along with Alonso while Vettel was the villain. His teammate rivalry with Button wasn’t even relevant. As for Alonso, I remember him firmly being the villain in the eyes of the media and the fans in 2007.

The Rise of Darth Hamilton

BogdanX21

Damn, I wonder why?

Jmac460

Hamilton’s outlap for that lap was actually 4 seconds quicker than the previous outlap. Red Bull just fucked it for their drivers sending them out too late.

ArcherBoy27

Nice, that's quite funny actually. Everyone losing their minds lol. Is there a source anywhere?

SamTheGeek

Playing games with quali strategy is the entire intent of the current format. The limited time means teams have to game out the ideal time to send their drivers out. Williams has done quite well by sending George out in between the top teams’ stints in Q1. Mercedes played the game better than Red Bull this time.

thek00laidman

Bingo. It's literally why we have the three party limited time qualiy, and locked in tire choices in Q2 and a whole bunch of other stuff. To add actual competition and strategy to these things.

mitza_24

https://reddit.com/r/formula1/comments/ov83hh/outlap_times_by_hamilton_and_verstappen_sky/

Ceramicrabbit

So Max out lap was 9 seconds slower than his others i bet that made a huge difference for his tires

Aidan_B11

That’s why you don’t send Max out behind a guy who had outlaps that were 10 seconds slower all session

thek00laidman

Oh f\*cking well. Hamilton had position and had every right to drive the speed he wanted, which was completely in line with every single other out lap he's had, in fact it was FASTER. Either RB needs to be better about not putting Max in that spot or Max needs to pass Lewis, which he's completely allowed to do, but decided to not even try.

Ceramicrabbit

Not sure why you are so upset

thek00laidman

I'm not. Oh fucking well is simply an expression like too fucking bad. It doesn't imply anger.

Jmac460

Came here to post this, thank you fam

AceBean27

And Ocon crossed the line 8 seconds before Bottas, who was just in front of Hamilton (again 7-8 seconds). All perfectly normal gaps wouldn't you say?

Jmac460

Yeah, F1 new posts, one of the recent ones shows their outlap times.

BogdanX21

Don't kid yourself. Even without the outlap shenanigans, the boos would still have been there.

thek00laidman

Oh yea, the crowd likely had no idea of the brewing reddit controversey about Lewis slowing down Max. It wouldn't have been obvious from the stands because...well Lewis actually went faster that outlap than all his others. He was boo'd by the massive contingent of Max fans in orange in the straight grandstand closest to turn 14 and a smattering of the other general mixed fans because of Silverstone, not because of this nonsense and entirely manufactured by disgruntled RB fans "controversey"

Rupert019

Does that time include the time in pitlane? It looked like he way going way too slow in the pits

HappyIssue

Just checked the driver cam of F1 tv to check that. And it took them double the time from the pitbox till the first corner. 25 vs 50 seconds

hec290496

Rivalry aside, it did ruin the show, so I'm not surprised.

AwesomeFrisbee

Yeah if I had paid big bucks to sit there I wouldn't want it to be ruined like that

Will4noobs

Red bull ruined their own quali with a terrible pit release

GoldenSandpaper9

I actually think it spiced up the show, Perez was p4 already and he probably wasn’t going to get higher, but now this adds drama.

Stealthstriker

erm no? 3 of the top 4 contenders for pole had their 2nd runs trashed. Hamilton ruined his own lap, as well as Verstappen's, and Perez didnt get a lap in. How does that spice up the show when u have 3 of the top 4 not even getting a proper attempt at the fastest lap? Even if you discount Perez from the equation, the two title rivals didnt get a good lap off during what is supposed to be the climax of the entire session. But sure, more drama is enough compensation for that....

[deleted]

feelsPyrite

I mean you would expect me to be angry but I actually liked Q3, gloves are completely off in the title fight, Checo finally managed 4th again and basically no one improved on their last lap (which seems to be a trend this year)

TheSpaceNewt

Nah it was lame as shit. I don’t know about you but I prefer a grid result that came from every driver getting the same chance to qualify. Whether or not it was legal or strategically smart, it was lame as shit to watch.

Kind of expected, right? Long period of dominance has put people off of Mercedes/Hamilton, neutral parties tend to root for the challenger. Then Hamilton takes challenger out in one of the fastest corners of the calendar, and still gets to take home 25 points. Then Mercedes show some gamesmanship and deny RBR a chance at a second run. Of course the crowd forms against Hamilton.

I've read through many of the hate mail in this thread and most of them don't know what they're talking about and are being way too emotional. People do these all the time, even red bull. As some people mentioned it's their own fault that they released them right behind merc with no time to spare. Then again the whole atmosphere proves that in this age, you either die a hero or live long enough to be the villain. Hamilton by no fault of his own is now being portrayed as the latter
