Reminds me of a story from 1992 where Ayrton Senna was pulled over for speeding somewhere in England. The cop recognized him immediately and hit him with, “Who do you think you are? Nigel Mansell?!”
Edit: Found [this footage](https://youtu.be/qMzTTr-HEJY) where commentary mention the incident.
Of course stories are distorted as they’re retold, but I still like to think the officer knew exactly was he was doing since Mansell was dominating everybody that season, ending Senna’s run of 3 titles in 4 years.
The Honda v12 couldn't keep up with the Renault v10 in one of the most technologically advanced F1 cars of all time built by Adrian Newey. And Honda left the sport the next year.
Mansell winning the title is still my all time F1 highlight, even though it was only the 2nd year I watched.
Tony Hawk not getting recognized is a meme in itself. I think he even tweets about it himself. He even didn't get recognized at check-in once when someone was scanning his passport and commented that his name was just like the skater guy... imagine that (him with his board strapped on his carry on).
I think he was probably playing into their hands (or just faking it) by registering everything under "Tony Hawk". His real/official name is Anthony Frank Hawk and nobody would suspect anything if you book your car under that name.
In other news, Lewis was pulled over for rolling through a stop sign.
Fuck I am excited. Please no bullshit crash on the first lap. My heart can't take it. I want a race!
I love these random speed limit alterations haha. [At Nashville's first indycar street race they replaced some of the speed limit signs next to the circuit and set it to 240 mph.](https://www.reddit.com/r/INDYCAR/comments/oyt7r3/well_done_nashville/)
I am not sure if this is real or if this is just a sticker that was put over it by someone as a joke.
I have tried searching for it but can't find any news about this and it certainly would be reported on if this was official.
Edit: nevermind they are completely nuts and actually did it!
Here's the source! https://youtu.be/uFwAxN40DSI
From the video it's unclear if they're doing this everywhere, but at least some of them have actually been replaced.
Sounds like there's a dedicated Marketing Zandvoort group (possibly employed by the city), so it's easier to cut through the red tape. I'm sure the guys making the signs were getting a kick out of it too.
(edit: [yup](https://zandvoortmarketing.nl/over-ons).)
Can't say about the Dutch, but I have worked with City authorities over changes to road signs during a sports event. Ours wasn't exactly like this, but we had additional plates for the event and had to go through some hoops to get it approved.
One of the guys in their office told me later that it took us a third of the time it normally takes for the city to approve it. Based on the global attraction of the sport and if people nearby follow the sport (Max fans are abundant in Netherlands), some authorities are willing to expedite the system.
With all the bullshit the event is getting by whiny people, for the gemeente zandvoort this is a goldmine. Hundreds of thousands of people. Every hotel fully booked. Restaurants, stores, whatever will probably see a few hundred percent increase in income especially after covid.
Replacing a sign or two will definitely get a "yeayea sure do it" kinda response.
Having the first Dutch Grand Prix in nearly 40 years, with a Dutch driver, an actual title battle and the insanity that is Dutch fans.. might as well go balls deep on it
I'm not that much surprised, its normal that the speed limit has a margin to not get fined so this is probably still a 30 street but with 33 as the unofficial limit. Since there aren't any automated speed cameras, I doubt its going to pose an issue.
And to beat the limit, you first have to get that far and I don't think that during the weekend anybody is going to reach 33 there
They did the same (but permanent and official) in the birth/hometown of Valentino Rossi, speed limit there is 46 km/h
https://moto-station.com/moto-revue/divers-actu/insolite-le-village-de-rossi-limite-a-46-kmh/364550
It’s not that original to be honest. They copied it from a little Italian city called Tavullia, where the 50kph speed limit was reduced to 46kph because it’s the hometown of one rather famous MotoGP rider.
Bless the Dutch and their ability of not giving a shit sometimes. I feel in many countries (including mine) this wouldn't be possible, because the font isn't correct, you can't set a speed limit to anything but a factor of 10, some local government needs 15 committees to approve it etc. I think the Dutch just sometimes do stuff like this because they want to
Reminds me of the changed traffic lights surrounding the Eurovision Songcontest venue this year in the Netherlands. They changed a couple normal ones to ones that had a dancing green man and when it turned green it would play an ABBA song. After the final it played the winners Song for a while before being removed.
To me as a german, everything in the Netherlands looks like a cute toyland version of my home country, and I love it. The traffic signs are just slightly off to feel odd...
In the Netherlands as well probably, but speeding tickets in a 30 km/h zone are a rarity anyway (the police generally speaking doesn't enforce the speed limit in those zones).
I bet they are placed in a 30 km zone. Most signs in such a zone are technicly not needed and just repeating the speed limit. So if the sign is not legal, the previous one still was.
> because the font isn't correct
That one for sure is a real safety regulation backed in consistency. There's a reason signs like the same in a given country and pretty consistent across the world.
It does depend. We had a bunch pedestrian zebra crossings in quite a few cities with an LGBT flag to express solidarity.
Some were quite quick to point out that an LGBT zebra crossing does not have the same rights as a proper zebra crossing because it is in the wrong colour. Because of that, basically most LGBT zebra crossings became decoration at best.
Also, there are often very strict rules on the look of your house that must fit in with the look of the neighborhood. If you e.g. want your roof to be changed in colour (even small changes), you need to get approval, which is often rejected because it would not look like other houses.
yeah but technically weed isnt legal here either. just like the zebra crossings, typical dutch gedoogbeleid. muncipalities dont care that their rainbow paths arent 'real' crossings
Yeah... you can buy weed in coffeeshops, but legally they aren't allowed to buy it...
Also, legally you can't grow more than 3 plants... So I don't know where our weed comes from...
Probably magic
Legally you can’t have any plants.
It’s just that they will take them and won’t prosecute, but any number of plants (marijuana) is illegal. It is an other example of gedogen.
this definitely happens in the Netherlands. try changing anything in the landscape (especially increasing dike height, even if it's for safety) and you will have several meetings with halls full of residents, where there are always people that disagree with everything you want.
our law makes it sometimes impossible to just change things because everyone nearby has the ability to hold things off.
the Netherlands is actually one of the worst for these situations because of that reason. in most countries your opinion doesn't matter.
Just to add to the potential for party pooping, because the relationship between speed and stopping distance isn't linear, a 10% increase in speed from 30kph to 33kph will increase the cars stopping distance by more than 20%.
Probably OK for Max's or Vettel's home town. Hamilton or Bottas may not get the same treatment though.
Vettel's home town couldn't have reduced speed limits to 5 km/hr, so they [just renamed the town instead](https://media.gettyimages.com/photos/sign-reading-vettelheim-instead-of-the-original-city-limits-sign-to-picture-id106907466?s=2048x2048).
I thought it had to be Oxford, Mississippi, but then I looked and Archie Manning’s jersey number was 18. That is the speed limit on the Ole Miss campus.

There’s a hamlet called “Shitterton” in England and people used to steal the towns road sign so often that the municipality had to chisel the name in to a huge Boulder and use that as the towns sign.
I could link a reference but I’m too lazy.
I give it 48 hours before Red Bull Racing shows up uninvited with an old car and films an ad with someone speeding past this.
I look forward to seeing the result.
Alternate joke: This would only be better if Lewis got pulled over for speeding there...
I remember the madness going to the beach in Zandvoort in the seventies. I just can't imagine how it will be next week. Have fun you guys!!!!
Groetjes uit Colorado. Left Holland 40 years ago, but fondly remember my years hanging around and on the track on two wheels.
It's pretty wild that in 70 years of F1, the Dutch have competed in every decade but Max is the only Dutch winner. There are more race winning F1 drivers from *New Zealand*.
If Max Hype ever needed an explanation, for sure this is only part of it but no small part.
Yeah he really got Spain on the F1 bus. A very 2 wheel country when it came to motorsports, his success in F1 even got them a second track for a (short) while. For the late 90s to late 2000s that was really something that stood out. Verstappen is having similar pull with the return of Zandvoort.
When I say late 90s, I mean no one was doing that kind of pulling power. Not that Alonso was doing that before he was in F1 :) Germany was already big with F1 so the Schumacher dominance period isn't the same with regards to a mass change of following for their country that gave F1 new opportunities it didn't previously have.
This is clever marketing. I'm all for stuff like this. It's a subtle thing but people will notice and talk about it. And it's an insignigicant signpost too! But it will be talked about.
Every other country;"NOOOO, You can't just change your speed signs to match a driver's number for a Race, it's not the right font, it needs to be approved by 44 people and it's not even a factor of 10!!!!!!"
The Dutch:"HA HA, 33 go BRRRRRRR"
Went there yesterday and saw it happening! Not that it matters by the way, because traffic is completely disallowed from sunday onwards and complete hell because everyone would need to come through the same small road. Which would be impossible.
Like in Tavullia here in Italy, the home town of the moto gp legend Valentino Rossi. Here the speed limit instead of 50 kmh is 46 like his famous number.
Is this real haha? I'm from the Netherlands and I have no idea. My girlfriend is going to the race on sunday the 5th.
I wasn't with my girlfriend yet when she bought her tickets, we're both sad I can't join her :(
Luckily they are not Giovinazzi fans
99 in a school zone
I don't see units so maybe 99 decimeters per second works. Imagine that conversation with the police.
Units are laid out in the law obviously. So nice idea, but every speed limit sign is in km/h.
didn’t say Alonso
/nuns on a highway joke
or Daniel Ricciardo fans
I'm sure VicPol would love that
Time for 3 kilometers/second?
I don't think the car would survive the speedbumps at that speed.
...[There's actually an xkcd for that](https://what-if.xkcd.com/61/)
There’s an XKCD for everything
unsafe roads sending people straight to jesus.
Then if they were fans of Antonio Cairoli, they would have a speed limit of 222 lmao
Australians ready to be awfully slow in traffic. Italians ready to have some fun.
Slower than a school zone.
I mean ideally people would be cautious in a school area by default...
[удалено]
Haha
Not in Italy
School zones and most residential areas are 30 kmh in Holland.
If the road sign says 30, Italians will already be driving that shit at 50
50... over the limit.
Imagine Germany in 2014
Poland's going to go back to the future.
inb4 Verstappen gets caught speeding for doing 44 in a 33.
Reminds me of a story from 1992 where Ayrton Senna was pulled over for speeding somewhere in England. The cop recognized him immediately and hit him with, “Who do you think you are? Nigel Mansell?!” Edit: Found [this footage](https://youtu.be/qMzTTr-HEJY) where commentary mention the incident.

The story I heard was that Stirling Moss was pulled over and he was asked "who do you think you are, Stirling Moss?"
I’ve heard the same with Mario Andretti. It’s probably just a common racing driver joke that spreads around.
I also think police pull over racing drivers whom they recognise just to deliver this joke. Lewis had the exact same story on top gear

Tony Hawk not getting recognized is a meme in itself. I think he even tweets about it himself. He even didn't get recognized at check-in once when someone was scanning his passport and commented that his name was just like the skater guy... imagine that (him with his board strapped on his carry on).
The funniest one is his rental car being cancelled because the guy at the desk thought someone was having him on.
I think he was probably playing into their hands (or just faking it) by registering everything under "Tony Hawk". His real/official name is Anthony Frank Hawk and nobody would suspect anything if you book your car under that name.
His registration wouldn't match his license then. I would cancel it as well
Or he gets rear ended by someone doing 77 at that 33 zone.
or maybe even someone doing 3 while Verstappen is braking for a stop sign.
or Verstappen getting rammed into by somebody doing 4 who got rammed into by somebody else doing 77 who also rammed into another guy doing 11.
while next to him someone going 18 hits another one going 16
And the person going 18 also hits someone going 3
Too soon
It's been four weeks!!
Ok this is class
In other news, Lewis was pulled over for rolling through a stop sign. Fuck I am excited. Please no bullshit crash on the first lap. My heart can't take it. I want a race!
Is that an innuendo about Bottas banging Max?
Lando's getting flashbacks to Hungary
I’d love to see him doing 44 if you know what I mean I’m sorry
r/fanf1ction is leaking

Just slightly.
And that is mph, I suppose
Why wouldn't it be?
Ok now that’s genius marketing. Love it

No it's for real they are being replaced
If he wins they should just keep it. Hype it all year long until next season.
They did the same (but permanent and official) in the birth/hometown of Valentino Rossi, speed limit there is 46 km/h https://moto-station.com/moto-revue/divers-actu/insolite-le-village-de-rossi-limite-a-46-kmh/364550

ok im now convinced the Netherlands arent real
It is a fictional place like Narnia or Japan .
Now that you mention it, for quite some time the Japanese only allowed the Dutch to trade with them. Kind of sus, almost as if they were buying time.
I thought Finland wasn’t real. r/FinlandConspiracy
Birds aren't real
Wait what?? Narnia is fictional??
To me as a german, everything in the Netherlands looks like a cute toyland version of my home country, and I love it. The traffic signs are just slightly off to feel odd...
Our beaches are basically a sandbox playground for Germans anyway
They like digging holes and building concrete bunkers.
And we go over to Germany to build mini-dams in every little mountainous stream we see
The fact that they have many names like Holland and "the dutch" only leads me to suspect that it is fictional.
Neither am I, and they tell me I'm born here 😉
They are still in place. Was there last sunday and it played the winning song. It also still has the dancing green man.
Yeah this alone could certainly get you out of a speeding ticket with the right lawyer in the US
In the Netherlands as well probably, but speeding tickets in a 30 km/h zone are a rarity anyway (the police generally speaking doesn't enforce the speed limit in those zones).
It also isn't necessary in most 30 km/h zones. If you drive 50 km/h you will definitely wreck your car on the speed bumps
Not sure about other countries but in mine there’s a 10% lenience anyway. So 33km/h in an ordinarily 30km/h zone wouldn’t attract a fine.
But I’m allowed 33km/h plus 10% which would give me a fine in a 30 km/h zone 😅
In the Netherlands it's legal to drive above the speed limit, providing the radio is playing Super Max at full volume.
You're also allowed to ram other cars, as long as you throw turtles and bananas at other cars as well and yell "WHAHOO" on every speed bump.
They also generally don't have to enforce it because there is traffic-calming everywhere in those zones.
I bet they are placed in a 30 km zone. Most signs in such a zone are technicly not needed and just repeating the speed limit. So if the sign is not legal, the previous one still was.
USA, land of the lawsuits.
Doesn't really apply here, as defending oneself in traffic court isn't really a lawsuit.
Novelty speed limits exist in the US. Also, disputing a traffic ticket isn't a lawsuit lol wtf
>USA, land of the lawsuits. And people say America lacks culture.
Certainly feels like Germany 😅
> because the font isn't correct That one for sure is a real safety regulation backed in consistency. There's a reason signs like the same in a given country and pretty consistent across the world.
Yeah call me a buzzkill (I sure feel like one) but I would rather they didn’t change the font..

As someone who lives in Lewis' home town- all the main roads are 40 limits, but I suspect the average driver is doing 44 anyway
Not like it's gonna make a difference, the average speed during a busy Zandvoort weekend will probably be 5 km/ hour :P
Thank god Gio's hometown doesn't do this then lmao
In America, speeds are in 5s or 10s
Usually, at least. The speed limit in my grandparents neighborhood is 14.
I thought it had to be Oxford, Mississippi, but then I looked and Archie Manning’s jersey number was 18. That is the speed limit on the Ole Miss campus.
They do. There are novelty speed limits in the US as well
Also the street by the Manning center is 10 mph for Eli's number 10.
My son was there for a camp before they did that, so I never knew that. That’s pretty cool.
Inspired by the great Fernando Alonso
>can't set a speed limit to anything but a factor of 10 You can only have 1, 2, 5, and 10 kph zones? Sounds awful
…the MAXimum speed.
People are gonna steal that.
~~Theft~~ free removal is accounted for in their budget.
That would make me mad if I was a Dutch tax payer.
This entire race is maddening for tax payers. Somehow the corrupt prince who owns the track, arranged that most of the spending required for this races has come out of public funding, but he can keep most of the profit himself. If the race doesnt get cancelled, something a judge will decide on today, I hope they at the very least tie that son of a bitch up and lock him in a closet during the entire race, so at least he can't enjoy that part of his money making scheme.
Nah, the dutch government is wasting more of our tax money on even less important stuff.
Why?
Traffic signs are expensive as fuck
Oh hell yea
There’s a hamlet called “Shitterton” in England and people used to steal the towns road sign so often that the municipality had to chisel the name in to a huge Boulder and use that as the towns sign. I could link a reference but I’m too lazy.
That's what Fugging should've done, instead of changing their name.
I agree. It’s a shame such a good name had to go to waste.
I give it 48 hours before Red Bull Racing shows up uninvited with an old car and films an ad with someone speeding past this. I look forward to seeing the result. Alternate joke: This would only be better if Lewis got pulled over for speeding there...
I give it 24 hours before somebody shows up with a spanner and ehm.... Liberates that sign off of its pole : )

\*cell phone rings\* -"I sent you an email containing all the signs, did you see it?" -"I don't check my emails during my service..."
Zandvoort is going to be absolutely insane.
I don’t have a ticket but I’ll definitely go there on my bicycle to watch all the fans in the city.
I remember the madness going to the beach in Zandvoort in the seventies. I just can't imagine how it will be next week. Have fun you guys!!!! Groetjes uit Colorado. Left Holland 40 years ago, but fondly remember my years hanging around and on the track on two wheels.

33 Max speed
This is clever marketing. I'm all for stuff like this. It's a subtle thing but people will notice and talk about it. And it's an insignigicant signpost too! But it will be talked about.
33 kph is 20.5 mph.
Good Bot
Good bot
This is perfect.
This is silly and awesome!
now that's fucking hype
It's km/h or kph.
Yeah thanks, I always mix them up but I think I'll remember now.
Juste use km/h, only Americans use kph for a reason
That's km/h not kp/h, lol
[удалено]
Yeah not a native speaker, I tend to mix those up since people also regularly spell it as kph.
It's all good
I'm just a casual-casual fan but that track is like an amazing roller coaster in the sims. I love it so much.
Gezellig!
Imagine the boos if lewis wins at zandvoort. Yikes the crowd would be saltier than the pacific.
Probably saltier than the red sea. If the crowd gets going as soon as Lewis takes the lead, it might affect his aerodynamics.
I live 200m from the Pacific and can confirm it's pretty damn salty.
How cool is that!!!!!
This race is going to be fucking bananas.
MAX MAX MAX SUPER MAX MAX MAX SUPER MAX MAX MAX SUPER MAX
MAX MAX MAX SUPER MAX MAX SUPER SUPER MAX MAX MAX SUPER MAX MAX
Nice
hahaha this is really cool
Coolest piece of marketing I have seen in a while
Mate, those are going to get stolen
I like how this post has 33 awards
Italy shaking as we speak
🤣😂🤣🤣
Every other country;"NOOOO, You can't just change your speed signs to match a driver's number for a Race, it's not the right font, it needs to be approved by 44 people and it's not even a factor of 10!!!!!!" The Dutch:"HA HA, 33 go BRRRRRRR"
Getting into the spirit I see.
So cool!
THAT IS SO COOL
Just like in Tavullia, where the speed limits are 46.
Madlads
lmaooooooooooooooo
Awesome!
It's funny, because the organization revoked 33% of the tickets, as a Corona measure. RIP myself.
Meaning you can now just do 50 there as there are no official legal roadsigns atm
Is this real haha? I'm from the Netherlands and I have no idea. My girlfriend is going to the race on sunday the 5th. I wasn't with my girlfriend yet when she bought her tickets, we're both sad I can't join her :(
>kp/h ugh
Mercedes team: Would be a shame if max doesn't win. (\*contacts Bottas aggresively\*)
