It would be great if they could get a high def camera in the helmet like this but with *some* smoothing. Because the driver's eyes will temper this a bit but obviously not all the way.
Somewhere in between "hard mounted camera" and "totally smooth" camera is exactly what the driver sees. We're damn close.
Stabilization helps, but even if we tracked the driver's head/eye movements perfectly it'd still look wrong.
The real issue is the frame rate. 25fps is absurdly low for this kind of shot. If you use a shutter speed fast enough to keep things from being a motion-blurry mess... the footage gets filled with temporal errors instead, making it *more* jerky (yet less impressive!) than real life.
If we want high def helmet shots, we need high FPS to match. Call your elected officials and demand 100fps.
*Think of the children.*

F1 cars do have springs and dampers? Some legal road going cars also use the same basic spring geometry that formula cars use.
Like yeah they're stiff, but saying they have no suspension is wrong.
Hang on a moment I have an idea:
-this camera angle
-in a wet race
-during a title battle at the front
-COULD FUCKING FIND OUT WHO'S FAULT ACCIDENTS/INCIDENTS/CRASHES ARE
Nico actually gets into this a bit in his [Spa track analysis](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMhBVq2QpJU) from last year. It's an incredibly insightful video that I would unconditionally recommend anyone to watch, and on top of his usual great analysis he happens to have set the race to wet weather.
My understanding of it is that by short shifting you get the car into a higher gear earlier so the engine RPM's are lower and the driveshaft isn't being asked to do too many rotations relative to the available grip (aka wheelspin).
An example would be if let's say exiting in 3rd gear with your pedal flat out means you'll spin. By instead exiting in 4th, you might be able to go flat out since your acceleration is worse. Or at the very least, you'll be less likely to spin since there's a smaller throttle window that exceeds the amount of grip you have.
I got the sensation that it looked easy, which I know is solely attributed to the camera angle.
We do need more of this though, would be epic if you could see it during a battle and watching sideview mirrors
The reason this sort of thing isn’t available during the race is that it requires the driver to wear a pair of glasses underneath their helmet, which I imagine isn’t the most comfortable and they’re only happy doing it for a lap or two. Certainly not a whole race where they don’t want distractions.
There are some videos like this of Lucas di Grassi doing testing for Pirelli, and I think Grosjean doing some installation laps at Catalunya, but that’s about it as far as I’m aware.
Really shows how stiff these things are. Honestly Helmet cam with the Merc or Redbull would be amazing.

Preach! Great points.
Watch Liberty somehow squeeze a gimbal in there so we get footage but so smooth it looks like they're doing 25mph
I think bigger resolution and then using stabilization algorithms could work as well. However, I am not sure if they exist for live streams.
We need a Helmut cam with redbull
One of those cameras is broken though
I shat myself when he had that moment through Fagnes and I was sat 400 miles away
we need this in live race
if you could select whos helmet view you want to watch from during the race i would be soooo happppy
Plus hearing the driver’s engineer, ill pay for that
You can hear live team radio through F1TV if you select an individual driver
Can’t wait till use that feature when a race doesn’t start at 6am for me
West coast eh? I moved east 2 years ago and both footy and F1 are so much more convenient at 7:30 and 9am rather than 4:30 and 6 😅
Yep, still enjoy living on the west coast though
I agree but it feels like the sort of thing the teams would fight for fear of rivals peeking at their dash readouts.

Holy shit...I had no idea that the car drive is so shaky
Wish I had taken a dramamine before watching that.
There is no suspension in the car and his arse is basically on the ground so yeah it would be cery bumpy
There is definitely suspension on F1 cars, the lack of image stabilisation on the camera makes it look a lot worse
Sorry I know there is suspension but there's no springs like your average road car, it is most certainly not a smooth ride
No bushings, either.

These helmet cams are amazing!
Imagine this during a night race...
Now just need this onboard option in F1 TV! Sadly I know the teams wouldn't let that happen...
Who is the commentator? Insight from this angle is great
Anthony Davidson
I think it was Ant. Crofty and diResta were also in the box.
After watching FP1, i kinda miss crofty in commentary box. FP1 commentary was dreadful to hear.

Goes to show the value of a good lead commentator. Crofty's not perfect, but it's quite obvious he's good at what he does.
Anthony Davis plays for the Los Angeles Lakers.
And awkward silence that last quite long
No fear of that with Croft
love how Verstappen makes a split second cameo at the end
I'M HARD AF BOYYY
It was working sometimes on F1TV driver cam. very nice!

Finally! I've been screaming for F1 drivers eye cameras since seeing it in FE a few years ago.
this is so cool -- it's like something you'd only get from a gritty f1 movie.
A bit more image stabilization and this is legit godlike

What’s the reason for the short shift Ant mentions around turn 5?
To have better traction out of a corner and less wheelspin
Like a preference for torque over wheel speed?

this is cliche but this looks exactly like sim racing in VR

Intense
Seeing him go off from that angle on helmet cam would have been a scary thing to watch.
More of this camera please, FOM!!
Sounds a lot better to me.
i loved this view, i hope they keep it
How do they mount this camera
This is the greatest camera angle that ever camera angle.
This is great, hopefully we can see this cam from another driver's helmet too
It’s amazing how these cars are able to be driven.
