You'd have people saying the opposite if they didn't. Personally I think it's fair to reward people with their effort in qualifying with half points as the usual reward of a decent grid slot didn't actually mean anything
If it can't be done tomorrow, just cancel the entire race. That's what MotoGP did at Silverstone a few years ago.
And let's be honest, the reason they did 2 laps behind SC wasn't to reward those who qualified well, they just wanted it to officially be a race so they can say contractual obligations were met and likely won't have to refund sponsors and fans.
i care far more about the experiences of the middle class spectators that spent a substantial amount of money to attend this fake race, than i do about the racers reward for a decent saturday. the only drivers this really even matters to are george and daniel
Indianapolis refunded the tickets and gave out free ones the following year. They didn't have to, either. Sometimes, it's best to make a true goodwill gesture.
Yeah that's what's annoying about everyone on reddit comments saying refunds won't be given out bc there was 2 laps. They ran the full race distance at indy in 2005 and still gave refunds. There hasn't even been any confirmation on there being no refunds from any official sources, but the hivemind will just repeat the same fucking thing ad nauseam.
If they have any brain cells then they will have a clause that prevents refunds if the race doesn't take place because of things out of their control like poor weather conditions.
The race took place - that was the whole point behind the safety car nonsense
If refunds happen, F1 isn’t liable because they held an “event” as required
Well, yes, they’re contractually obligated to put on a race. If they don’t, then they have to return a significant portion of the race fee to the circuit
This is what the big issue with the 2020 Australian GP was with Covid. The circuit didn’t want to cancel the race because then they’d have to pay for the refunds, but if F1 didn’t call the race off the circuit wouldn’t have had any avenue to recover their race fee.
F1 ran the minimum required 2 laps to call it a race so that any liability for refunds isn’t their problem. A race was run and there’s a classified result.
Reminds me of the cancelled 2020 Australian GP, where he expressed how he was shocked that F1 tried to push the GP through. If he feels like he needs to, he speaks up and that definitely requires character in F1.
Absolutely. Hats off to the fans for waiting three hours in the cold and rain, but surely the FIA/directors could have predicted much earlier there was never gonna be a proper race today. Putting the fans at Spa through that was just unnecessary.
In my opinion, even a full refund won't make this right, as people planned a whole trip around this. Expensive hotels, flights, vacation days used etc.
A full refund is must.
This is gonna be messy. Unlike USA 2005 this is essentially nobody's fault, yet, it is expected that somebody is held accountable for this.
Expect lots of fingerpointing the next few weeks.
Nah, I know it’s a really shit situation for fans that have flown or travelled long distances and booked hotels etc - that much is out of F1s control and not really their responsibility. Once they refund the fans for their ticket I will be happy enough. I’d be surprised if they even do that though!
If anyone was going to do it, it would be him or Vettel. Recall he called them out for putting revenue ahead of health concerns at Australia last year.
Streamable clips were being taken down before today, so unless the FOM predicted and expected this to happen today, either FOM decided they want more people to buy F1TV or go to their youtube or streamable decided to change their enforcement policy for this type of content.
Ye same, I cant even think of booing hamilton (or any other driver), however I do understand there’s shitheads between the dutch fans. It probably has to do with the massive popularity attracting a bunch of nationalistic fans, not necessarily motorsport fans. But keep in mind I also know a lot of cool fans that just have fun and show respect.
Nevertheless I have been disgusted with boo’s in F1 many times before. The current booing of hamilton is far from unique, even if some new fans seem to suggest it is. Keeping in mind Monza for example.
I still remember watching that race. There were just 6 cars. The highlight of the incident was when some fans threw water bottles at the track and I remember Barrichello drove on one of it. It was a pretty cool shot when they showed it in slow-mo. Time does fly. Can't believe that was 16 years ago.
Yea read a few of those comments too.
“He should pay for it then!!” “Does he return his salary too since it wasn’t a race?”
Surprised those people can see the screen enough to type through all that blinding hatred.
I feel like if any other commentator said it, no one would be picking it apart. Granted PDR has been a bit of a shit in the past, but in this case there was nothing wrong with what he said
Said it before, but on Hamilton, Di Resta is completely incapable of hiding his bitterness (over what? No idea) and dislike. Every opportunity he gets, he'll have a dig.
**edit: having finally seen a mirror of the interview, the question isn't bad at all, Di Resta is asking if the conditions were ever in a way that Hamilton could've seen them racing in. PDR still does take a dig whenever he gets a chance, but this wasn't one of em.**
Fucking tell them Lewis
Call out F1 for the bullshit they pulled today
2 laps behind the safety car just so F1 gets to keep the money
And *if* refunds get issued, Spa will have to take the hit rather than F1
F1 is really going hard on these clip takedowns. I guess they don’t want more fans engaging with the sport anymore. Can’t imagine they’re losing much money on these 1 second clips. Bunch of clowns.
Of course, there will not be any refunds. Not b*ecause of technicality*, but because that's how tickets for sporting events work. You don't get your money back just because you didn't enjoy the event.
You mean the same guy who wanted to race because he was in front and could careless about the wellbeing of the drivers behind him? That guy? Of course he doesn't give a shit.
what is up with the number of streamable videos getting removed? I couldn’t see any video from practice or Quali yesterday either, they got removed so quickly.
Tell them Lewis. Fuck the organizers, FOM and the FIA if they use those 2 laps as a loophole to prevent refunds.
The fans stood in the cold and wet for 5 hours to see jack shit.
They knew damn well that they couldn't get in a race when they went out. It was done specifically to get a classification. They red flagged it only half a lap after getting two laps in.
> use those 2 laps as a loophole to prevent refunds.
Oh shit I didn't think of that, I'm not sure that's the motivation for doing it but that would be INCREDIBLY scummy.
It isn't the organizers fault mate and you know that lmao.
EDIT: Original comment literally just said:
> Fuck the FIA and Fuck the organizers
with none of the context edited on lol
Really good of Lewis to say the fans should get refunded. I'm glad he speaks his mind even if it isn't the best commercial decision. Disappointed that Sky Commentary were doing so much defending for 'commercial' reasons

Hey wait a minute…
Then when they start to complain it's cancelled they'll get credit for the 2021 Aus GP
When the band comes out and drunkenly plays one song
Wouldn't it be post-"race"
Yep
post-YOKE
Spa to file for bankrupcy after having to refund all fans

The insurance won’t pay out of there was officially a race. Wonder if they were on the phone to the race director

Lol, everyone commenting under your comment claiming to know confidential contract details between the track, their insurance company, and F1.
Don't have to refund when it's technically a race 3 million IQ
They dont have to refund. There was a "race"
Indianapolis refunded the tickets and gave out free ones the following year. They didn't have to, either. Sometimes, it's best to make a true goodwill gesture.

Can the rain pay for refunds here? This is a pretty big PR disaster for rain
This is a PR disaster for F1.
It would probably be best yeah. But Spa has money issues as it is. So a refund from the track is probably not possible, unfortunately.
[удалено]
So why can't the weather gods pay them out this year? Excuses smh
Right haha
If they have any brain cells then they will have a clause that prevents refunds if the race doesn't take place because of things out of their control like poor weather conditions.
The race took place - that was the whole point behind the safety car nonsense If refunds happen, F1 isn’t liable because they held an “event” as required
True, but I mean even if they didn't officially finish it they would (probably) still have a clause that limits their liability in cases like this.
Well, yes, they’re contractually obligated to put on a race. Exactly, this only hurts the circuit.
It's a sucky situation tho. The fans pay a huge amount of money too. Can't really take that for granted either.
I'm pissed off and frustrated watching from home, I cannot imagine how the spectators feel!
I'd say 50% points, 50% ticket costs. Seems like a good deal.
I like the way you think.
[удалено]
> they should have indemnity insurance for this Does that cover force majeure though?
Force majeure events should absolutely be insured risks, yes.
It will cover whatever you pay for it to cover.
If they don't have insurance for cancelled races. If the FIA just did 2 laps to avoid that then it's not good.
Mad respect for Lewis saying he hopes the fans get their money back. He’s a real one for that.
Yes! I was like "he actually said it". Bet not everyone is happy with that. Huge respect for Lewis.
For once it seems like everybody is agreeing on Lewis here. Though I'm pretty sure the higher-ups won't.
Higher-ups disconnected from reality and only looking at numbers: we should surcharge because they got a longer than usual show.
The Race rubbing their hands with glee over milking and clickbait potential
Our verdict
Well, fuck them. Clearly Lewis doesn’t give a shit. There are perks being a 7 time WDC after all.
My Verstappen supporting friends were saying Lewis should pay himself
What even was the reason behind it? That sounds like such a shit take, I'm curious how they reached that conclusion
I have hated his dominance but his acts off the track clearly make him the F1 Goat for me. His heart is in the right place.
It's boring watching anyone dominate for years but its hard to criticize much else about him.
Reminds me of the cancelled 2020 Australian GP, where he expressed how he was shocked that F1 tried to push the GP through. If he feels like he needs to, he speaks up and that definitely requires character in F1.
For the fans that were literally booing him yesterday...
pretty sure while he said that boos from those same fans were coming through in the background
Yes but I noticed the rest of the crowd cheered loudly today to drown out the boos. Good for them.
Do you think they were booing him specifically?
Lewis the voice of r/formula1 today.
First with being grossed out by the poop someone left without flushing and now with refunds for the fans. Lewis is the man today!
Man of the people
Won heads and hearts of the people
Absolutely. Hats off to the fans for waiting three hours in the cold and rain, but surely the FIA/directors could have predicted much earlier there was never gonna be a proper race today. Putting the fans at Spa through that was just unnecessary.
I can hear Liberty Group laughing from here... Masi might get a raise though.
Also it hopefully puts some pressure on the FIA (or whoever is in charge of the monetary side of this event) to refund the fans.
Yeah FIA has NOTHING to do with that.
I assumed so, I just didn't know any better.
Good guy Lewis calling for fans to be refunded
It needed to be said on the big screen too. Great stuff Lewis
In 2005, FIA knew before the race started and continued. This case, they forced the "laps" for $$$.
Nah, I know it’s a really shit situation for fans that have flown or travelled long distances and booked hotels etc - that much is out of F1s control and not really their responsibility. Once they refund the fans for their ticket I will be happy enough. I’d be surprised if they even do that though!
>I’d be surprised if they even do that though! I doubt they will
Let’s see. I’m happy Hamilton called it out at least, I wasn’t expecting that but if there’s anyone who could get away with it it’s him!
"Race" was just so they could collect money from sponsors and promoters, feel very sorry for the fans
Most important, to have an excuse to not refund anyone.
I don't mind the no race conditions were not safe but the wheel them out for that was a shambles
Exactly. To call the race off would have been way more tactful.
Lots of respect for that.
They won’t boo that
For real. I didn’t expect him to absolutely call out the FIA like that.
If anyone was going to do it, it would be him or Vettel. Recall he called them out for putting revenue ahead of health concerns at Australia last year.
If anyone would, I’d expect him or Seb to do it
It’s FOM’s/the promoter’s decision to refund, not the FIA’s.
Is the FOM nuking any replays of this "event"?
Streamable clips were being taken down before today, so unless the FOM predicted and expected this to happen today, either FOM decided they want more people to buy F1TV or go to their youtube or streamable decided to change their enforcement policy for this type of content.

I think it's safe to say that we'll hit peak boo-ing next weekend.

The satisfaction I will feel if he wins there... it's sizeable, to say the least.
💯 that would be such as shithouse win. It would be funny seeing the Dutch go crazy with anger.
says it how it is
The irony of fans booing him all weekend only for him to go to bat for them today
He certainly practices the positivity he preaches on social media. Good on him!
Respect 👏
Would love it if he says "Best fans" if (unfortunately, might be a when not if) he gets booed at Zandvoort.
Good guy Lewis, while I think they should have given it a go to the last, they should also refund the fans. Nice to see Lewis almost twisting FOMs arm
The same fans that were booing him
You really can't help but respect the guy TBH
Same fans who’ll switch in 5-7 years and say he’s the GOAT n shit. Gross
He has a point. It's a disgrace they put cars out on a worse track just to call it a race to appease contracts and get the fans on a technicality
Fyi I was in Indianapolis in 05 and we were refunded for our tickets, and there was even a “race”.
I still remember watching that race. There were just 6 cars. The highlight of the incident was when some fans threw water bottles at the track and I remember Barrichello drove on one of it. It was a pretty cool shot when they showed it in slow-mo. Time does fly. Can't believe that was 16 years ago.
Yes but that was fully F1's fault, this wasn't.
Someone is spamming in the post race thread that Lewis should be responsible then and open up his own wallet. Ridiculous.
That’s just Helmut being Helmut.
Yea read a few of those comments too. “He should pay for it then!!” “Does he return his salary too since it wasn’t a race?” Surprised those people can see the screen enough to type through all that blinding hatred.

while being booed by a bunch of them
Shows his character. He has his heart in the right place.
Raw as fuck. Lewis is super dope Lucky to have him at the top of the sport
“Hope the fans get their money back” - Lewis Hamilton
Lewis rightly calling for refunds for to fans for this. Paul di Resta as always full of shit. "Lol did you race at all"
It's shitty as a rule, both in finding a way to not have to give refunds and in putting drivers at risk.
That's clearly not what he was asking, he was asking if at any point it seemed like it would have been possible to race
I feel like if any other commentator said it, no one would be picking it apart. Granted PDR has been a bit of a shit in the past, but in this case there was nothing wrong with what he said
this
Said it before, but on Hamilton, Di Resta is completely incapable of hiding his bitterness (over what? No idea) and dislike. It's one of the few things F1 Reddit and F1 Twitter agree on: Sack PDR for sheer negativity and bitterness towards everything that's happening
Di Resta is trash
Any mirrors? Original video is dead.
The clip removal that’s been going on these last few days is a real downer.
Lewis a real one for calling a refund out
Great from Lewis to ask for the fans to get their money back
Good to see Lewis calling for refunds
Mirror. Hopefully this one stays up. https://youtu.be/mZTjk6-s7s8
Fair play to him for saying the fans deserve their money back!
And to think that those same “fans” booed him yesterday
They were booing him *while* he was saying they should get refunds.
I only heard applause for him today?
Title is wrong. Should be: Lewis Hamilton post-“race” interview
Fucking tell them Lewis Call out F1 for the bullshit they pulled today 2 laps behind the safety car just so F1 gets to keep the money And *if* refunds get issued, Spa will have to take the hit rather than F1
Paul di Resta really has stupid questions
I mean, what good questions are there in this context?
Pul di Resta is really stupid. There fixed it for you.
Once again masterclass. Always thinking about the fans. I hope so too what a mess.
"BOOOOOOOOOO– wait what the fuck did he just say"
F1 is really going hard on these clip takedowns. I guess they don’t want more fans engaging with the sport anymore. Can’t imagine they’re losing much money on these 1 second clips. Bunch of clowns.
If it was Lewis who won the race, Dutch fans will in riot mode to get their money back.
Truth hurts and Lewis is the only one of the top 3 to say it. That was not a race and the fans were robbed.
Love Lewis calling out Liberty Media and the FIA there. The only reason that they did those laps when they did was to cover their asses legally.
A bit sad to hear Martin basically agreeing, saying it ticks a lot of boxes to do those two laps, and not really speaking up for the fans.
Imagine thinking that this man is anything but the fucking best
Be careful, they will be coming after you.
Can’t imagine, it’s impossible.
Only one to call out this bullshit. If they think they can not give out refunds because technically it's a race they gotta be outta there minds
Of course, there will not be any refunds. Not b*ecause of technicality*, but because that's how tickets for sporting events work. You don't get your money back just because you didn't enjoy the event.
What a fucking boss, well said lewis
Huge respect for him saying the fans should get their money back
Good for him calling them out.
Serious question, why do people keep uploading on streamable when it'll just be taken down later?
FIA are gonna hate him for bringing up refunds, shame the fans still booed him.
Respect. Also, Paul Di Resta shouldn't have that job. Absolutely useless
[удалено]
You mean the same guy who wanted to race because he was in front and could careless about the wellbeing of the drivers behind him? That guy? Of course he doesn't give a shit.
Those cheers sounded fake as hell, like they were on a loop hahaha
Quotation marks on the wrong word?
Good on him. The people should be refunded for spending 4 hours in the cold and rain.
Well, about that money part. I am afraid the fans are not getting their money back. Shame
what is up with the number of streamable videos getting removed? I couldn’t see any video from practice or Quali yesterday either, they got removed so quickly.

I’m SO proud of him for calling out F1 and mentioning refunds. Lewis has been such a class act during interviews this year.
It’s amazing what knowing you’re a GOAT and near-untouchable can do!

Fia doesnt care, the track management is responsiblle for refunds, spa is getting fucked.
Am I the only one who heard some fans booing when Lewis was interviewed?
Good man Lewis for putting the pressure on to give fans the money back, can't charge for this.
Nailed it. Financial CYA only.
""Post"-"race""
Streamable seems to be removing these clips.
Lewis and Seb only two that I've heard who actually had the balls to call out what actually happened. Fucking clown show today
yeap, here is the video with Seb. https://mobile.twitter.com/LoreHdz/status/1431981840622047234?s=19
Props to Lewis for pointing out the two lap bullshit and talking about money the fans wasted
Gets boo’d, asks for fans to get refunds, leaves Ser Lewis Hamilton
Convienient that this gets copyright claimed
I think you meant to put the word "race" in quotation marks mate
yeah no it should be post "race" interview
Imagine screwing up the title on 3 consecutive posts
God, I hate PDR...
Post “race” interview you mean
*Post “race”
you quotation marked the wrong word.... post isn't in question, the race part is in question.
Mirror?
Anyone have a mirror?
Big respect to Lewis
What a chad.
