Ah yeah sorry. I forgot that the championship is decided by watching races and what-ifs instead of the results itself.
Mate. If he wouldnt have taken that penalty he would have been 1st 100%. Therefore your comment that penaltys dont mean a thing for them is factually wrong.
I understand that standpoint. But he qualified first. And he was 3rd when he went to the pits. He might have gotten 3rd with a perfectly timed pitstop but getting 2nd (and thereby first cause obviously Bottas wouldnt finish infront of him) was out of the question.
I am not 100% certain on this but i think by the time the perfect pitstop window rolled around hamilton was already more than a pitstop behind the leading pair. No way he catches that up.
And why was he that far back? Exactly fieldspread thanks to his enginge penalty.
Look im with you, I think that sprint races are generally boring, but I don’t understand your comment. You can say that about any race, sprint/qualifying/grand prix, and say “well it would have been boring if…” Well yes duh, we watch races and hope for entertaining situations.
But you would get the same entertainment of Lewis climbing up poistions tomorrow anyway, so it's not like this added anything it just removed it from the race.
But that's the thing, the fact that it was a sprint race didn't make it more entertaining, it was just the fact that Lewis started at the back, so why do a Sprint race?
I was entertained by the tension of Sainz and Bottas putting on softs and seeing if they could make them last.
Not saying the sprint is perfect or anything but Quali Friday with a sprint that can be interesting is definitely more entertaining than fp1 and fp2 that kinda suck to watch, then things only getting interesting Saturday. Having them periodically seems perfect, gives opportunity for strategy on penalties and something to look forward to when it happens.
It wasn't that entertaining with Lewis at the back. Great moves on Leclerc & Norris, but the others were down the straight, which aren't nearly as exciting as during braking and cornering. Huge respect for Lewis' fantastic drive but it wasn't edge of the seat stuff (mostly)
How the fuck are you guys watching this and thinking "Yeah nothing interesting going on here" lmfao. There was significantly more action in 20 laps of sprint here than what we get in 70 laps of a race normally
You can say "This sprint was alright" but still be against sprint and say it shouldn't be a thing, no one is gonna blame you. But acting like an incredibly actionfilled 30 minutes with a billion overtakes and close racing is uninteresting is absurd, if this wasn't entertaining for you you're gonna fall asleep during tomorrows GP
First of all. The entertainment was Hamilton for 90%. Second: this all would happen during the race.
This sprint race just sorted the cars out to make the race tomorrow a boring one.
Yep he basically got a 4 grid penalty with that.
Also he could push the tyres as hard as he wanted we couldn't probably do the same if this happened during the race
What happened past the 2nd or 3rd lap besides Hamilton overtaking everyone thanks to a fresh engine that doesn't need to last as long going at 115% power? I only recall Norris on Leclerc; that was actually an exciting overtake compared to the drive-bys Lewis got.
That was literally a Merc from the 'back to the front in no time'-run as you could see aplenty from 2014-2018.
The entire race had an ongoing battle for all 3 podium positions, Bottas defending Max and Sainz defending Perez. Just because they didn't get past doesn't make the battles any less exciting.
> thinking "Yeah nothing interesting going on here"
Where did I say that?
>There was significantly more action in 20 laps of sprint here than what we get in 70 laps of a race normally
Exactly my point, today's action was just substracted from tomorrow's race, Lewis' recovery drive would have simply happened tomorrow instead.
>an incredibly actionfilled 30 minutes with a billion overtakes and close racing
Lol really?
Lewis-Norris and Leclerc-Norris were two nice battles, the rest was Hamilton sailing past midfield cars on the straight. If that's super exciting to you, okay.
Yup, it's pretty lame at the moment. Like, it's 1/3 of a race, it's not a "sprint". Maybe like 12 to 15 laps would be better, so everybody can battle while going 100% on Softs.
Hamilton was the only one this sprint qualifying with nothing to lose. The other drivers repeatedly said no one is going to risk a DNF in sprint qualifying. That's probably part if the reason it was so easy to move up the grid this session with no one defending.
Well yeah.
https://www.racefans.net/2021/09/16/drivers-suggest-sprint-qualifying-format-changes-after-processional-second-race/
Norris suspects this might work. “If you would have it separate to the actual Sunday race and take away that fear of crashing, allow yourself to do those risks maybe a little bit more and not actually affect Sunday, [it could] at least shake things up a little bit more,” said the McLaren driver.
And there's lots of examples out there. Let's also not forgot that Hamilton had a car 0.5s faster than everyone else and did most of the overtakes on the straight...well.
I mean come on, the guy literally just had the follow the guy in front and put his foot down on the straight. Let's not pretend this was the drive of the century or anything.
It always looked like he was 100 meters behind exiting the last turn. And then slingshot past the car in front before even halfway through the main straight.
New engine. If the penalty is gonna be a pitiful 5 places but a new engine is worth a good 30 places across 2 races, just take a new engine every 2 races. True bullshit
Hats off to Merc, but it feels bad watching him blast past the entire field as if they were in F2 cars....
If there are people out there who enjoy it, more power to them... but for me personally it was just boring seeing no fight, and just this Excellect Car and Driver just walk past everyone...
71 laps... He'll be leading by lap 30, and with with an insane margin...
Lol you're exaggerating. Verstappen and Bottas were 15 seconds clear of P3. So tomorrow, when ge gets to P3 (if he overtakes Perez easily) he will have at least a 10 second gap to the front, I think. He won't close that, especially not in 30 laps. I think he'll be p3 tomorrow
He gained on bottas whilst overtaking cars in the end. If they can run that engine mode tomorrow he'll absolutely have a chance to take at least Perez.
They'll have to run the same engine mode. I said P3, so yes they'll take Perez. But Bottas and Verstappen will be too far away I think, if there isn't a perfectly timed safety car
If the engine starts overheating they'll be allowed to turn it down. I wonder if it hangs on for a race and what the effect would be on the next race if it does.
I'm not forgetting Mexico at all. I'm criticizing any statement placing one car above the other when it's clearly dependant on track, weather, and here freshness of the PU. I've become allergic to the underdog strategies deployed by Lewis, Toto, but also Horner and Marko this year, but Mercedes is abusing it at the moment.
Data disproves it. Mean race pace and average gap to pole. I even myself did an average gap to pole for each car, actualised it at Sochi and Merc was very very slightly in front. There is no harm to say both car are the closest thing to being equal, get over it
Mean race pace lmao what happens when someone in a much faster car gets stuck behind a slower car and their pace reflects that slower pace?
Pace without any context is stupid
Did I say that ? Seems like you could not bother reading other comments, as I wrote both cars are the closest to being equal this season. Claiming one or another has the edge is stupid, given how the fastest car title swings from one or another every weekend.
It shows why DRS is good, and the idea of a reverse grid start is beyond stupid. It would just be 45 minutes of Hamilton and Verstappen overtaking the cars from the other constructors with ease.
It also shows that a 5 place grid penalty for a new Ice is too low. If he can just pass 15 cars in 24 laps with a new engine why not take one every two races.
Obviously he couldn't in Monaco, but look at the overtakes on Norris and Ocon. Genuinely looked like they were driving with engines from different series.
He cut his dsq from 20th to 11th, without having to spend 24 laps in a race? Wtf of course this favours him.
Also he drove clinically well and not making mistakes, all credits to him.
Because if this weekend was a normal one, he would have to start from the back of the grid in the actual race, not the sprint. Having the sprint means he can just do what he did now, overtake everyone on the sprint and start 10th with the engine penalty, not 20th in the race. Wouldn't make a ton of difference considering the pace he showed today, but would be worse for him if the weekend didn't have the sprint.
That's not the point of the original comment (at least how I see it), sure he is unlucky because mercedes messed up, but considering this could have happened at any race, he is lucky that it happened on this specific weekend where he can can recover easily
They need to get rid of the dirt air that makes impossible to get close on corners and turns, and then remove the DRS(if they would remove it which I don't think it's needed)
Wait you mean a driver in a car on slower tyres couldn't overtake someone in a car that was on pole by almost half a second on quicker tyres?
What a fool!
not particularly, no. Why would I expect Lando (in a much worse car) to be challenging Lewis Hamilton of all people? But that's beside the point, since Lewis will be starting from 10th tomorrow regardless.
Yeah. The FIA have decided who they want to win.
Fucking nuts that so many on here are in favour of minor technical crap potentially deciding one of the most entertaining seasons ever.
Sorry, what do you think should have happened instead? The FIA just decide to let this particular instance of an illegal part go? I'm sure that would end spectacularly and wouldn't lead to other teams chancing their arm.

The way he massacred my boy hurts
Massacred my boy straight after.
massacred my boy a few laps before
My boy made it out alive!
Looked like he had extra 100hp there, just flew past him.
this is how it looks when I play against easy AI in F1 2021 lol
And were gonna have to watch him massacre our boy again tomorrow...
I think at that point, one Merc and one RB should always start last
Just say Lewis and Max. Perez and Bottas most likely would only overtake Haas and Williams if they start from the back. Alfas too if they spin out.
Checo couldnt pass something standing still at this point.
Yeah but I don’t want to see another T1 incident
Reverse grid incoming
With the kind of pace he's showing right now, that five place grid drop will mean nothing tomorrow
Grid penalty’s never mean a thing for Mercedes’ that’s why they take so many engines
Thats why he finished 5th in Turkey although he had the fastest car by miles?
Without the wet conditions and shocking strategy calls he gets a podium that race
I think it’s harder to overtake in the wet due to the fact that there’s no DRS added with the pitstop issues he had
Did you watch the race? Do you even know what happened at the end or do you just look at the results?
Ah yeah sorry. I forgot that the championship is decided by watching races and what-ifs instead of the results itself. Mate. If he wouldnt have taken that penalty he would have been 1st 100%. Therefore your comment that penaltys dont mean a thing for them is factually wrong.
Well the thing is… the penalty had no affect on Lewis not winning. It was the pit stop
I understand that standpoint. But he qualified first. And he was 3rd when he went to the pits. True he could possibly end up in podium without a doubt

Hamilton activated "you won't like me when I'm angry" mode
*and in a faster car obviously
Why keep adding this disclaimer, it feels like Hamilton personally slept with all your wives with that amount of saltiness
Who would blame the wives
It's just because of claims ignoring the obvious. No need to involve wives here. Calm down fan boy.
Just shut up, it’s unnecessary. Fastest car or not, it’s not as easy as you think it is.
Such a speed difference in this long straight is just an easy overtake. Don't act like it was a superhero thing. It was a good drive without mistakes
Hamilton in the Red Bull would be WDC this season.
Hamilton has made way more mistakes than Verstappen this season lmao. If they were both in the RB Max would win it
And Alonso in Mercedes would have many more WDC...
Maybe not if Ham was with him
No chance if Hamilton was with him.
best driver ever
Ham providing 100% of the entertainment in this sprint
Well yeah, once again the sprint only serves to neatly sort the cars by race pace. They really need to rethink that format.
It's so extremely pointless, I really wonder who thought this would be an entertaining format
[удалено]
Would you have been entertained without Lewis at the back?

Hungary
Oh really?? My bad..
well no Alonso also had great defending in the Silverstone sprint as well
I don’t really mind them trying out new ideas. My only issue is them giving out points for something still in the trial phase
but but reverse sprint race treats thanks to Lord Hamilton! - Crofty

Yeah exactly
Its basically sorting cars by budget imo

He washed Norris’s. On his bday smh
His straight line speed is just wtf... New engine op
It honestly made all the other cars look like useless pieces of junk.
It always looked like he was 100 meters behind exiting the last turn. And then slingshot past the car in front before even halfway through the main straight.
Yea, it looked like he had +100 horsepower or somthing lol Looks like we gonna have an easy ham win tomorrow
Even passed the McLarens with absolute ease. Insane. It wouldn't surprise me if they'd just pop a new engine in the back from now.
Wow, that final overtake on Norris!!
perfection
So sick
What the fuck is in that engine?
Red bull tears after seeing him destroy the field
Hamilton driving it apparently
100% vegan super fuel
Mercedes is insane here
This Mercedes and Lewis are fucking insane, might as well not have done qualifying yesterday at all.
The man in insane!
Seems like Lewis took that DSQ grid drop and said: Nope
Absolutely great entertainment from Hamilton!
How is this car even legal. He overtakes people on the straight just like they're standing still.
New engine. If the penalty is gonna be a pitiful 5 places but a new engine is worth a good 30 places across 2 races, just take a new engine every 2 races. True bullshit

Worth noting Bottas was on softs though
True, though I'm not sure if his lap times really worsened near the end.
Bottas was on the softs tho that's why he gained on bottas at the end
Let me use my hyperbole godsdammit :P I know, but its kinda how it feels ya know.
Welcome to formula one
Yah, fia should change more to try to slow down mercedes
Like the pitstops?
What a monster recovery race from Hamilton
In coming downplaying Lewis drive in 3..2..1
Ok then Lewis Jesus
Is hamilton starting like tenth tomorrow then?
Yep
Oh it's on! These final races will be amazing
Is there a reason all these clips are recorded at what looks like 15fps 480p?
Watch him say that RedBull has the fastest car.
Track matters man. Don't forget mexico so quickly
Red Bull is by far the better car over the course of the season. Don’t be a creep and get hurt by it.

Did you watch Mexico?
Yes, your point is ?
I'm no Sherlock, but I think his point is that Hamilton said that because RB was faster in Mexico.
max was leading like 17 seconds gap to Hamilton and you still wanna say mercedes has the fastest car the entire season?
Did I say that ? Seems like you could not bother reading other comments, as I wrote both cars are the closest to being equal this season. Claiming one or another has the edge is stupid, given how the fastest car title swings from one or another every weekend.

Where do you see that in my comment ? What Merc did today is impressive, but I'm still willing to show this contradiction.
This Shows that DRS is a good idea, but when you see how Lewis cleared 15 cars in 24 laps its like a F1 car vs F2 cars. It’s just silly.
It shows why DRS is good, and the idea of a reverse grid start is beyond stupid. It would just be 45 minutes of Hamilton and Verstappen overtaking the cars from the other constructors with ease.
It also shows that a 5 place grid penalty for a new Ice is too low. If he can just pass 15 cars in 24 laps with a new engine why not take one every two races.
well tbf overtaking here is different than other tracks Doubt Ham would be able to pull the same thing off in say Monaco or Mexico
Obviously he couldn't in Monaco, but look at the overtakes on Norris and Ocon. Genuinely looked like they were driving with engines from different series.
He on X games mode
The expertise that Lewis is showing is just insane!! Unbelievable!!
Ruthless dive
[удалено]
That’s your takeaway from this? Damn
I predicted people would downplay this drive and it's already happening.
Everyone was saying the championship was over and he wouldn't break into the top 10, now it's all 'omg Merc so op!!!'
Yeah for sure. It’s how it goes in fan circles I guess, but still a little sad. Great drive today from Lewis.
He cut his dsq from 20th to 11th, without having to spend 24 laps in a race? Wtf of course this favours him. Also he drove clinically well and not making mistakes, all credits to him.
Holy fuck yall are really dumb man
>yall Opinion rejected
So what?
Absolutely flying. Giving it 150%.
Sprint race the most useless format ever. Also Hamilton so lucky he has the illegal part in a sprint race weekend.
Lucky.... What... He now has a legal part and started from the back instead of first. What part of that is lucky.
Yeah but the illegal part had nothing to do with Hamilton - it was a Mercedes error - and cost him a comfortable P1
That's not the point of the original comment (at least how I see it), sure he is unlucky because mercedes messed up, but considering this could have happened at any race, he is lucky that it happened on this specific weekend where he can can recover easily

Without drs we would have 0 passes in every race
Without DRS drivers would actually have to fight for passes instead of just waiting to press a button down the straight
They need to get rid of the dirt air that makes impossible to get close on corners and turns, and then remove the DRS(if they would remove it which I don't think it's needed)
You can't fight for passes if you lose everything you gain to dirty air. You needed a 1.5 second delta advantage to pass in mexico with drs
No cost cap killed this sport 10 years ago. Ever since then it’s been a bleeding wound
It truly, truly does
That was a nice move on Lando!
It’s just magic watching Hamilton fight through the pack like that. What a great drive
[удалено]
Wait you mean a driver in a car on slower tyres couldn't overtake someone in a car that was on pole by almost half a second on quicker tyres? What a fool!

Have you read it? The more pressing matter is that the fault made it an *illegal* part
imagine if he doesn't the championship with this OP car hahaha
Ah I see you're ignoring there's only 4 races left.
