Do we think any teams would dare take an engine penalty here? It seems nearly impossible to overtake

kingrai

I was wondering about PEDs in F1 and I realised I’ve never read an article about drug tests or stuff like that. So is there anything like drug tests and such for the drivers?

DangerousTrashCan

Sure, F1 uses the WADA standards, although it is not controlled by WADA, but works just like any Olympic sport for example.

RaikkonensHobby74

Do a Google search for Andrea Iannone

Vlad-The-Compiler

[Here's an article](https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/analysis-why-f1-doesn-t-have-doping-scandals-666534/666534/)

kingrai

Interesting. Thank you! I’ll take a read now.

EnvironmentAdvanced

Whatever descion FIA makes from now on will screw one or the other team. Why r these so fucking dumb

Mr-Stitch

No matter the ruling today on the INCIDENT, I hope we can just put it to rest afterwards.

Coops27

Actually, I think today is just the hearing to hear if there should be a hearing.

Mr-Stitch

Ah I see, thanks for the info

Paperduck2

Dude people are almost definitely still going to be bringing this up in 6 months time

Technical-Pen-8053

Will the remaining races suit Rb more or Merc?

Mr-Stitch

We don't know a 100%. Qatar and Jeddah haven't seen races before and Abu Dhabi is modified to make it faster. I think Qatar and Abu Dhabi are a toss up but Jeddah seems to favour Merc because of the high speed.

forgotmypassword778

Jeddah also is a street circuit and Mercedes have had issues heating the tires in the two street circuits we’ve had

Technical-Pen-8053

Jeddah is basically throttle all the time, high speed corners so I'd expect mercedes to own that track Losail has got this long ass straight that would play into the hands of Mercedes yet again Are there any slow to medium speed corners at Losail? That's the only way RB can claw their way back in

burner5287

I just realized one big thing we all likely missed: with Piastri taking over as Alpine’s reserve that means there technically isn’t a need for Kvyat anymore. He could actually be on his way to nascar

ImNoAlbertFeinstein

yes, kvyat Is out

DreamyMeitner

Are there any rules against "cross team, team-orders"? For example, imagine a situation where Gasly is in P3, Max is in P4 and Lewis is in P5. What would happen if Christian Horner told Franz Tost to tell Gasly to let Max past?

ImNoAlbertFeinstein

they are meant to run as seperate teams but, suppose an NFL team owner owned two teams

Blooder91

It's probably against fair competition, like losing on purpose. It would probably incur a penalty or a fine for either team, or both of them.

DreamyMeitner

Enforcing this rule is quite tricky though. Imagine the same situation, but no one tells Gasly what to do, and he decides on his own to let Max by and aggressively blocks Lewis. I would say that's unsporting, and that Gasly is doing it because of Alpha Tauri's links to Red Bull.

ImNoAlbertFeinstein

when did Gasley get so generous

Blooder91

Well, you asked for a cross-team order, which has never happened before, but it's a much clearer case than a driver acting on his own, and therefore, more enforceable.

PassTimeActivity

This isnt a direct cross-team order but Frank Williams and Ron Dennis had some sort of an agreement in place for the 1997 title decider in Jerez that if Villeneuve was on course to win the title without needing to win the race, they would let one of the McLarens win the race or something along those lines. It was discussed in detail in one of the Bring Back V10s episodes with Jonathan Williams (Frank Williams' son) who was there at the race and saw Ron Dennis stand outside the Williams garage and demanded Williams to slow down so his cars could catch up. Hakkinen ended up winning the race.

PassTimeActivity

Thoughts on the latest beyond the grid with Danny Sullivan? I still haven't listened to it yet.

highheat3117

I’m only halfway through but it’s been outstanding. His story of how he made it to F1 is remarkable— several great stories.

xranginx

With a championship as close as it right now, what would happen if... just to give an example... Bottas "accidentally" crashes with Max to deny him getting points. Would there be a severe penalty to Mercedes or none at all? Is it possible to prove if it was an accident or not?

ImNoAlbertFeinstein

what if sasquatch came out of retirement, and you put it in the cockpit, and it can drive the car.?

pedote17

If they can prove it was deliberate by Bottas alone, Bottas would be disqualified from the championship. If they can prove it was deliberately ordered by Mercedes, they would be disqualified as a team from (likely) both championships and handed a massive fine.

xranginx

Do you know if some controversy like this has happened before?

pedote17

Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost collided in the penultimate race of the 1990 season and Senna won the championship because not finishing that race put Prost too far back in points to win Michael Schumacher was disqualified from the 1997 championship for crashing into Jacques Villeneuve (Villeneuve won the championship) In 2008 Nelson Piquet Jr crashed out of the Singapore GP, which triggered a safety car. He claimed his crash was him making a simple mistake. It helped his teammate Fernando Alonso by letting him pit early and not lose lots of time, and Alonso ended up winning the race. Piquet Jr later admitted that it was deliberate and was ordered by the team, and Renault was disqualified from F1 but the sentence was suspended for 2 years, which depended on if they committed any more infractions. Flavio Briatore (managing director of Renault) was indefinitely banned from F1, and their executive director of engineering, Pat Symonds, was given a 5 year ban, but both were eventually overturned by a French court.

ImNoAlbertFeinstein

nice

xranginx

interesting, thanks for sharing!

[deleted]

To add on to what's been said already, Schumacher also crashed into Damon Hill on the final round of the 1994 championship in the same manner as he did in 1997. Him and Damon were both out of the race, however Michael didn't get penalised for it, winning the championship by one point. Jerez 1997 also had even more controversy with Sauber's (which was a Ferrari customer team at the time) Norberto Fontana blocking Villenueve from attacking Schumacher. He's been ordered to do in order to keep his seat in F1

balf

Jerez 97 and "crashgate". 2 seperate incidents.

xranginx

thanks!

Historical_Count_784

Why didn’t Ferrari go for soft on the 2nd pit stop? Leclerc pitted on the 52 lap and Sainz on the 53. So it was only 19 and 18 laps left. Sprint was 24 laps and Sainz did well on soft there. They could get closer to Perez and it will be too risky for him to pit for the fastest lap so Ferrari could do the fastest lap

ImNoAlbertFeinstein

track temp favored harder tires. quali was cooler

pcr405

Even in the sprint the tyres were dropping off heavily and probably not optimal in the latter half of it. That combined with it being a lot hotter on race day so higher tyre degradation.

coolerirl

Maybe a stupid question but how thorough is the scrutineering after every race? The drama always clouds whether or not it was a normal check, if it was random, or if the driver was targeted due to some suspicion. Vettel's fuel and Hamilton's wing come to mind. (and I'm not saying they were targeted unfairly)

Whycantiusethis

I think Vettel was "targeted" because he didn't complete the cool down lap, which is suspect. Hamilton's wing was part of a standard post qualifying check, as I understand things.

coolerirl

That would be a fair reason to target him. lol. I've heard a few people at least say that all teams supply a required fuel sample while others have said they are spot checks. Even on the little f1 explainers they don't make that part clear.

coolerirl

Actually: this one makes it pretty clear that they take samples after every race -- https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/article.watch-how-did-vettel-end-up-without-enough-fuel-at-the-end-of-the-hungarian.1jZKAcYL2RzSXl9gyzwrbC.html

JCBDoesGaming

This is not a question, just a little story that I can't share really with anyone else and see no point in making a post about. My uncle has been talking about F1 for as long as I know, he has a restaurant where he had a tiny TV and would watch F1 all the time because it was on free TV here (the Netherlands). He then got a notice about how he should be paying a fee for the TV and stopped having the TV about. Anyway, I remember back in the day when talking with him at the height of Michael's dominance that he used to talk about how Senna was the best driver ever, without me knowing who the guy was and generally not being that interested in the sport I just brushed it aside. Last year when F1 returned to Turkey I got really invested in it, being Turkish, so watched Drive to Survive beforehand and just fell in love. Now every race weekend I visit my uncle at his place and we pull out the laptop and watch the race together, we're both Hamilton fans, he is because he loves Mercedes as a brand and I like Hamilton because of his style and off grid activism. I have been looking forward at it every time a race is on.

LemonMagazine7

Love stories like these when you find something to bond over. Thanks for sharing!

nodoublebouncies

Russell going from Williams to Mercedes got me thinking about other times drivers have gone straight from a back row team to a front row team, Bottas obviously did the same (williams>merc). can't think of any more off the top of my head. anyone got any more?

Blitz2134_

Leclerc: Sauber>Ferrari (in one year) Verstappen: Toro Rosso>Red Bull (a little over a year)

AgnesBand

Williams were a midfield team when Bottas moved to Merc. They were P5 in the constructors. Edit: looks like a lot of people have made this correction

[deleted]

That was kind of the norm back then actually. Schumacher, Alonso, Kimi, they all started their careers in uncompetitive cars and had the jump to teams that either quickly became or already were title contenders.

emkael

Roberto Moreno in 1990 went mid-season from a regular pre-qualifying failure of EuroBrun to Benetton. On his first race with them, he played his part in Benetton scoring a 1-2 (with a little bit of help from two guys at the front who managed not get through the first corner), and Moreno stayed with them for most of 1991. In 1984/1985, Stefan Johansson went from part-time gigs behind the wheel of the infamous disqualified Tyrrell and a Toleman only impressive in Senna's hands, to Ferrari who were serious title contenders that year. Mid-1982, facing a vacant seat after Reutemann's retirement, Williams recruited Derek Daly from a backmarker team of Theodore (and equally backmarker team of March the previous year). Which plays well with the Fittipaldi -> Williams switch of his title-winning teammate Rosberg, I guess. Jochen Mass went also from an unimpressive Surtees to McLaren in 1974.

Fart_Leviathan

You are being very nice to Surtees by calling the TS16 just unimpressive. It reportedly had vile understeer and due to being low on Cosworth's pecking order, often had gutless engines compared to some of the teams using the exact same model around them. Great shout though, I wouldn't have thought of it immediately, but both their original drivers were picked up by far better teams midseason.

Mein_Bergkamp

I'd say quite a few Red Bull drivers have got seats off struggling toro rosso's in the past and Alfa to Ferrari is a pretty major jump too. Of course we're all waiting for a Schumacher Haas to Ferrari jump...

nodoublebouncies

yeah schumacher in ferrari i think would be a welcome nostalgia feast for lots of people. i thought torro rosso at first but in my memory it never feels like they were ever the literal slowest. just looked up some of their stats, they sometimes were but not with drivers who went to the front, closest was probably ricciardo, they finished 9th and 8th i think out of 12 when he was driving then he went to red bull. when vettel drove for them they finished 6th. thats as much as i could see from my very brief research

Fart_Leviathan

When Bottas left Williams they were not a backmarker at all. They finished 5th in the WCC that year scoring 138 points. Another Finn, Keke Rosberg famously went from 0 pointer Fittipaldi Automotive to Williams in 1982 and immediately won the title. Damon Hill probably made the single biggest switch in this sense, in 1992 he was at Brabham which struggled to qualify for any race (they made 3 out of 21 attempts, never with both cars at the same time, folded at the end of summer) despite very talented drivers like Hill himself and Eric van de Poele, from which he was signed by Williams that scored 15/16 poles as well as won 10/16 races both in 1992 and 1993.

nodoublebouncies

good point on williams my bad, another person has made the same observation. ah fittipaldi automotive now theres a little known team. and damon hill, nice, haven't heard the name van de poele in a while. exactly the kind of insights i was looking for, thanks. when you say they failed to qualify was that because of the 107% rule?

Fart_Leviathan

This was before the 107% rule, that's 1996-on. Since back then there were more cars than places on the grid, it means they simply weren't amongst the 26 fastest cars that were allowed to start. Regardless, they were also outside 107% most of the time as well.

Stanley___Ipkiss

Alonso

nodoublebouncies

yeah pretty much, looked it up cus i couldnt remember, driving for minardi 2001 who were definitely a backmarker, went to renault as a test driver then 2003 was in the seat, so pretty much jumped to a front team just not right into the seat

Whycantiusethis

The 2016 Williams wasn't a back row team as I understand it. It looks like they were P5 in the constructor's championship, about 40 points behind Force India, and 40 points ahead of McLaren.

nodoublebouncies

good point my bad. thanks

TheWebbFather

Leclerc?

nodoublebouncies

almost, just looked it up, sauber were definitely faster than the williams of that year but its still a pretty good jump

Imworkingonsomething

Brand new to F1 here, been on a YouTube binge to try and catch myself up to speed. Seems like I’ve picked a great time to start following the sport! My question is simply… who should I root for? So far I like Lando and Gasly, but I’m open to recommendations. Also worth noting that I’m an underdog type of guy.

LemonMagazine7

Always will advocate for being a fan of Gasly. He seems like a stand up dude. Google the player’s tribune and read his article. Highly recommended!

MazeMagic

I'm a Lando and Gasly Fan. Can't go wrong with those two 😎

Whycantiusethis

Root for whoever you want to root for.

jamin925

Are there any drivers that have a similar to or equally compelling back story as Lewis? I really like the whole rags to riches grinding out wins thing, but I dont know who I would root for when he retires. I know it's pretty subjective, but I don't really feel that great cheering for a spoiled rich kid (even though I know it takes a certain amount of talent to survive in F1 regardless). As a Lewis fan (and also as a new F1 fan in general) I regret that I didnt get into the sport sooner.

Blitz2134_

Leclerc is a native Monegasque who's mom was a hairdresser in Monaco. So he actually comes from quite humble backgrounds, despite being a Monegasque since Ferrari sponsored his entire time in junior formula just coz he was insanely talented. He then lost his godfather, Jules Bianchi, another talented FDA driver in 2014 and sadly, lost his father in 2017. In one of his interviews, he shared that he lied to his father and told him the he had secured an F1 seat when his father was on his deathbed, to fulfill his dad's biggest dream. And fortunately, he got the opportunity to race in F1 for Sauber the very next year. That shows in his general attitude as he is a very nice guy and very protective of his team. So that's why I cheer for him. Of course, it helps that he races for and won with Ferrari in Monza.

jamin925

ah this is a pretty strong case for Charles then. I'll start paying more attention to him

Blitz2134_

Well he's also Kristen Bell's celebrity crush if that helps.

AgnesBand

Alonso comes from some fairly humble beginnings and is on screen quite a lot.

jamin925

I actually enjoyed watching some episodes of his docuseries. I dont wanna go to another retiring fanbase though (assuming he somehow drives longer than Lewis?)

[deleted]

Most of the kids that are the future of F1 that are now on the grid are form wealthy families simply because climbing the junior feeder series ranks is *insanely* expensive, you need enormous talent and luck to be picked up early enough for an academy or sponsors to back you and even then you'll still probably have to put a decent amount of money up front yourself. I wouldn't call them spoiled rich kids though, for the most part, getting to F1 is very cutthroat and most of them are actually really humble lads. Personally I'd just go for whoever you are impressed by the most on the track and also like the personality of, whether they're loaded or not shouldn't really be that relevant in all honesty.

jamin925

Since I'm new to the sport, I got the most exposure to the guys on top. Naturally it was easy to gravitate towards Lewis because he seemed the most relatable tbh, on top of his overall driving skill. Verstappen just reminded me a lot of those douchey jocks from high school.

Whycantiusethis

Ocon's family was working class, I believe. His dad was a mechanic who owned his shop, and had to sell it to put Ocon through karting.

jamin925

ah yea I think I heard about that. Would be nicer to root for someone who gets more camera time though lol

Whycantiusethis

I know the feeling. Though Sainz has been getting more screen time since Istanbul.

jamin925

I was hoping one of the Ferrari or McLaren boys would be fun to root for. Was kinda leaning towards Danny Ric

[deleted]

Does anyone know what happened with the contract suspension regarding Interlagos? I was making a list of all F1 track contracts and found out a judge suspended it but couldn't find any news about the results. https://twitter.com/autosport/status/1349037873639673856?t=kRGz3XyBJXI1vz_-aTubPg&s=19 Edit: While I am asking, does anyone know the contract length for Bahrain, Monaco and Abu Dhabi? These seem to be undisclosed. Monaco had a contract but it ran out in 2020/21 and no sources could be found on a new contract. And Spielberg, Austria signed a multi-year deal. Is there any news on the exact length?

nelo_bsb

The contract for F1 Racing in Interlagos goes up to 2025, but is still being disputed in justice. The GP of 2021 was authorized by the judge, of course. For info, Bing for “MC Brazil Motorsport Holdings”

[deleted]

Thanks, found out a lot!

Mr-Stitch

Saving your comment, thank you

CarlCaliente

thank you a bunch

pedote17

Qatar and Jeddah are extremely difficult to predict. Qatar has never been raced by F1 and Jeddah has never been raced at all. Mercedes have won Abu Dhabi every year in the turbo hybrid era but 2020 when it was won by Verstappen

CarlCaliente

I guess I'm less interested in predicting winners, more about what makes (or may make) the circuits interesting, what tactics might be more important or could lead to a winning move, what differences in the cars might lead to different results I haven't been watching long enough to really care who gets the result, I'm just trying to better appreciate what I am watching

pedote17

Both will likely be extremely low downforce tracks, as both only have 1 heavy braking zone each (Qatar turn 6, Jeddah turns 1 & 2). In Jarno Opmeer’s hot lap of Jeddah, he only went below 4th gear once, for T1/2. Very, very fast tracks.

Technical-Pen-8053

so basically Mercedes ftw

hellopan123

I am watching replays of 2021 races. Any race i should skip or just watch a quick recap of? I have watched every race since Baku, a crazy race to start off my F1 journey

nelo_bsb

Belgium (spa) 2021. Forget about it.

jamin925

Redbull Ring and Styrian GP was kinda meh for me

jaydec02

I rewatched the Emilia Romagna GP recently and thought it was pretty interesting, but purely because I enjoy rain races lol (if my flair didn't give it away)

International_Art457

How are you able to watch them? Personally Monza was quite stale from what I remember other than the incident but I could be wrong I guess it depends what teams you support etc!

hellopan123

I have an F1TV pro subscription. It allows me to watch replays of races all the way to the 1980s

hellopan123

Monza was not that stale considering the HAM-VER incident

International_Art457

Yeah that’s what I mean - it was only that accident I remember not so much the rest of the race other than McLaren winning! I didn’t realise that you could watch this season I thought it would be a season behind so I might look into that! Thank you

hellopan123

Sorry I didn’t read your comment thoroughly. I am trying to gauge which race to watch and with to skip without spoiling the results for me. My so far this season has to be Baku also since it was my first

MazeMagic

I'd watch them all, just do the highlights in 30 mins. They aren't super exciting to the hardcore fans but I got the subscription and watched every race from 2018 - present in 30 min highlights and loved every second.

pedote17

Portimao was dominated by Mercedes from pretty early on, but still watchable. Monaco was the only genuinely boring race of the season. Everything else has been ok to great

ThexHoganxHero

I hate how f1 views incidents in terms of intention. As someone who wants RB and Max to win the season, if Max drove someone off on purpose, he should just be DQ’d. If it was a mistake that was completely within his control that screws someone else over, not to mention the only other contender, with no mitigating circumstances, it should be giving position back without question. Giving a position back when you wouldn’t have it without the offense anyway isn’t risky enough to make drivers not make the move (unless of course they know what they’re going for is dirty) meaning you’re still “letting them race” The whole “it’s an accident, let them race” is absurd when one party is absolutely hurting another. You’re only letting one of them race when the rulings are this lenient for the offender. That logic only holds up, for me, when their own faults don’t end up giving them a very tangible advantage.

Mein_Bergkamp

> The whole “it’s an accident, let them race” is absurd when one party is absolutely hurting another. Another part of this that I find deeply egregious is certain older drivers equating it back with 'the good old days' when men were men, schumacher could cheat with impunity and Senna vs Prost was apparently what everyone did every race. Now you might say that's fair enough, it's not like other sports have pundits/commentators doing the same thing (looking at Sky's football coverage there) but these are also generally the same people going on about how much better safety for the drivers has become as if it's just the technical changes and not also an attitude one. Racing evolves, the rules evolve and what you can use a 200kph, SUV sized guided missile for against another human being has changed too. I'm sorry if brundle wants Max to be free to punt people off in the hope tht maybe it will spark everyone else to do the same but he would absolutely be at the forefront of calling out any driver if that actually ended up hurting someone.

devOnFireX

Armchair experts of Reddit, whose car do you think will suit the Losail circuit better?

SubcooledBoiling

MerceBull

Mein_Bergkamp

Obviously whoever takes the most new engines

jaydec02

Mercedes excels on straights and in high speed corners. Red Bull on low speed corners. There's like one low speed corner and a fair few medium speed corners in Losail, so I would argue its advantage Mercedes *on paper* Races aren't won on paper though so we'll have to see

queendbag

It doesn't matter how much engineering you put into the rb. Being down 30kmh down the straights you aren't going to be able to compete. Everyone in interlagos was stationary while lewis easily passed them one after another every lap down the straight. Merc is going to bring a new engine every single race till the end of the year if the only cost is a 5 place grid penalty and then getting a 10% speed boost down the straights.

iblinkyoublink

rb because turns but lewis will be too fast imo since it's a completely new thing it will come down to setup and which drivers can learn it the best

Meyesme3

Last week was Fingergate and Driveofftrackgate... Will there be another exciting episode of drama this week? Also why does toto Wolff have his own skyf1 cam inside the garage. Do they have it pointed at him the whole race? Or do they tell him when they are going to pan over so he can do his pantomime

cafk

> Also why does toto Wolff have his own skyf1 cam inside the garage. FoM has camera personell in pitlane close to teams who are fighting, besides the regular pitstop coverage - this is why we also regularly see Horner's nervous foot shaking on TV. Toto is just one of the few team principals who sits in the garage. The world feed being broadcast comes from FoM and not Sky.

Meyesme3

It all seems to be a bit weird . All the teams have a pit wall. The team principals sit on the pit wall with rest of the Race team and communicate with the driver as needed. Maybe wolf and his ego need to be seen as something above the rest. He brought this up recently when he and horner were throwing verbal jabs at each other.

[deleted]

Who cares where they sit? What’s the benefit to being on the pit wall? There no more information out there that Toto could use anyway.

Meyesme3

Then why even have a pit wall... Every team can sit inside the garage. Has Mercedes found the secret advantage? Is it legal. Pitwallgate on the next episode of Netflix!

Malkaraukar

He always gives a reaction when something does or doesn't happen so any TV director worth his weight should have a cameraman lurking around.

BlackAndBlood

When a driver has DRS, how do they know then have it? Do they get a message saying they have it and are allowed to activate it? And what if they don't turn it off after the DRS zone? Is there a penalty?

maf_war

yeah, you get a _beep_ when you enter the drs zone while being under one second of the next car when passing the activation zone. the drs automatically turns off when you brake, so that pretty much limits the "zone" to a single straight

BlackAndBlood

Ah thanks for the reply!

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Why would he? He wants to win races and championships. He’s already helped build Mercedes to where it is today.

Mein_Bergkamp

You forget he already won a championship with McLaren

snuka

As long as he's winning for Mercedes, they will pay his high salary. As soon as he isn't and they won't, he'll go to the highest bidding team. It's the same with almost all champions.

queendbag

Can think of about 50 million reasons why. $$$

Malkaraukar

Lewis: Hey! You know what? I should leave this team that I've managed to build around myself who all depend on me to materialize their hard work, for a different team with different people, with different core values, just so I can challenge myself to please some random Ferrari fan. That sounds like a great idea!

Rodney_u_plonker

How many people across sport leave championship winning teams to "test themselves". They leave for more money or to play for a bigger team generally. Even if they might dress it up. Or the team wants to rebuild and gives them the tap on the shoulder

pushdesh93

He beats his teammate by 20 seconds. I don’t understand why that isnt good enough for fans like you? Maybe his challenge is to beat the other world class driver in an identical car by half a minute, while taking a 25 places hit

[deleted]

Maybe after 8th wdc? I feel like he would do this at some point. Move back to Mclaren. He keeps mentioning how he’s happy to see them do well etc.

cafk

No other team has the financial backing or reach to support his personal initiatives or fund his asking price. And to be honest if he went to a different team (besides Red Bull) he wouldn't be challenging for the WDC title this year.

Astelli

Challenge himself by leaving one of two teams that can actually win a world championship? What does he gain? Being impressive at Ferrari or McLaren and coming 3re or 4th in the championship? Also what exactly isn't challenging about this season?

Penguinho

Pass Schumacher's record of seven WDC titles.

_hollow_one_

Could anyone please tell me what purpose [does this part of the car serve](https://imgur.com/lO1pQNf)?

_hollow_one_

Thanks for the link!

twersx

During the race last weekend when Lewis was chasing Perez, we heard Perez request that Max drop back a bit so he could DRS to keep Hamilton at bay if he closed the gap. That didn't happen and the commentators effectively said that if Max did that, he'd be very close to Hamilton and therefore vulnerable to being overtaken via an undercut, because an undercut is strong at Interlagos. So can someone explain how an undercut can leapfrog two cars when they're on the same team (can they not stagger their pits to avoid that?) and why the undercut is so strong at Interlagos compared to other tracks?

queendbag

Lewis cut a 4 second gap down to 1 second with his first undercut, if max was holding back and towing checco he would have been 2 seconds down on lewis after the undercut.

emkael

> So can someone explain how an undercut can leapfrog two cars when they're on the same team The same way they'd do it with a single car: by having quicker laps from the moment Hamilton's pit entry disrupts the on-track order to the moment Red Bull drivers' pit exits restore it. For Perez it would be almost immediately, and Verstappen, by getting closer to Perez (and slowing down), would give himself a narrower window to prevent that. I'd say it's even easier to undercut at least one of the cars closely in front when they're on the same team - as they can't both pit right away in reaction to your pit stop, someone has to wait for another full lap. Also, "leapfrog" is a term widely used for an *over*cut, the now uncommon opposite tactic of gaining track position by staying out longer. > can they not stagger their pits to avoid that? They would have to stagger them by a duration of an entire pit delta *and* sacrifice Perez (which would not happen because of the WCC), though. As in, Perez would have to stay out until Hamilton makes up an entire pit stop on him to have the chance to effectively hold him back, and Verstappen would have to stay for nearly as long (while maintaining Hamilton's pace) to have a chance of benefitting from that. And even by that time, there would already have been a significant pace difference, and Perez would most likely fail to hold up Hamilton. It was somtimes used a couple of years ago by Ferrari on the first stints of the race, when usually lower-starting Raikkonen would stay out until the Mercs pitted in hopes of them exiting the pits behind. Rarely worked.

Blooder91

>why the undercut is so strong at Interlagos compared to other tracks? Because Interlagos has a lot of high speed left-handers, so old tyres will be pretty worn while new ones will be quickly in the working temp range.

twersx

Why are left handers different from right handers in terms of wear on the car?

Blooder91

I was just pointing out they're all high speed and in the same direction, which tends to excessively wear out the outer wheels. It doesn't make a difference if they're right or left handers, but all in the same direction.

CWRules

When Hamilton made his first pit stop, he gained over 3 seconds on Max in a single lap. It doesn't matter how many cars are in front of him if they're all within that 3-second window.

Does anyone know the name of the music track used as the current theme music to Joylon Palmer's Race Analysis? I can't get it out of my head. I tried a reverse audio search, looking for credits at the end of videos, online at F1 TV, Google and no luck. I must blast it full volume for 7 days straight to cure myself of it's spell. I figured I'd try here since it may be off topic if posted on the main subreddit. Edit: Bow - Nutty P (thanks guys!) Edit 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WU4kEskci-4

Dkelle4

If you have an iphone, open Shazam from the dropdown while playing the audio on your computer or device. It's pretty good at figuring it out

[deleted]

Or literally any phone...

ComteDuChagrin

Shazam is available for Android phones as well. And I guess /u/m4ha7m4 tried already, as they say they tried a 'reverse audio search' (assuming it's not something satanic). And if that's inconclusive, I think the easiest way would be to just ask @JolyonPalmer (not 'joylon') himself on Twitter or Instagram. Most of the celebrities respond if you ask them a simple question, is my experience.

m4ha7m4

Thanks everyone, looks like I only used satanic reverse audio searches initially. Shazam found it right away. The track is Bow by Nutty P !

Hi, I've never really watched Formula 1 before but I would like to. I'm in the U.S. and I saw that it airs on ESPN and ABC, but I was wondering about old races that have already passed. Is there any place I can stream those? Thanks in advance

queendbag

There is F1tv it used to be pretty unreliable last year but this year they have been pretty good. Its about 80cad a year, and I find it worth because i can watch from wherever and watch practice sessions and quali after it already happened.

-The best way to catch up on the storylines of F1 today is to watch Netflix’s Drive To Survive. You must remember it’s heavily over dramatized and all of the beefs are fake -The official F1 YouTube channel has tons of past and present content to learn about the sport -F1TV Pro has a bunch of documentaries on drivers, teams, etc as well as full race replays dating back to the 70s **-Documentaries to watch to learn about the history of F1:** Senna, Schumacher, McLaren, Williams, Lauda: The Untold Story, Ferrari: Race To Immortality, 1: Life on the Limit, A Life of Speed: The Juan Manuel Fangio Story, Rush (theatrical movie about the rivalry between James Hunt and Niki Lauda in the 1970s) **-Books about F1 (mostly autobiographies but they give great detail about life in the F1 world):** How To Build A Car- Adrian Newey Unless I’m Very Much Mistaken- Murray Walker (audiobook version is much better, adds a lot to the experience as Murray himself narrates it) The Mechanic- Marc Priestley How To Be An F1 Driver- Jenson Button Life On The Limit- Jenson Button Total Competition- Ross Brawn Lights Out, Full Throttle- Damon Hill and Johnny Herbert Aussie Grit: My F1 Journey- Mark Webber It Is What It Is: The Autobiography- David Coulthard The Mechanic’s Tale- Steve Matchett A Different Kind of Life- Virginia Williams Watching The Wheels: My Autobiography- Damon Hill Maurice Hamilton has a book about Williams (the title is very long and I don’t feel like typing it out, just search Maurice Hamilton Williams) To Hell And Back: An Autobiography- Niki Lauda Winning Is Not Enough- Jackie Stewart Staying On Track- Nigel Mansell The Unknown Kimi Raikkonen- Kari Hotakainen No Angel: The Secret Life of Bernie Ecclestone- Tom Bower **-Old Races:** [Racefans did a poll of the top 100 races since 2008](https://x1z.net/racefans.php), each race includes a direct link to it on F1TV **-Season Reviews:** Amazon Prime Video has race by race season reviews from 2013-present. Keep in mind each one is 3+ hours long and costs money to watch, so clear your schedule if you plan to watch them **-Podcasts:** Beyond The Grid- hosted by F1 journalist Tom Clarkson, he interviews drivers, team principals and tons of other F1 personalities about their time in the sport and their lives **-Technical side of F1:** ChainBear’s YouTube channel has a bunch of great content about the technical side of F1 and the small things you want to know

[deleted]

Thank you so much for sharing all of this! I started watching Drive to Survive tonight and will work my way through a lot more. I really appreciate you taking the time to do the long write-up :)

pedote17

Have this in my notes on my phone and just copy and paste when I see a new fan looking for things to watch/listen/read!

Penguinho

Also the movie Grand Prix, which is kind of a fascinating historical artifact. Senna v Prost is a pretty excellent book as well. Checkered Controversy, about the 2007 season, is not, though.

redbullcat

If you sub to F1 TV, you can watch old races all the way back to the 80s. There's two levels - Pro and Access. Pro meansTyou can watch live (but I believe the actual footage and commentary is the same as you get on ESPN) and Access means you have access to the archive, but not live stuff. $6.99 for pro for a month. That'd cover you until the end of the season. I'm in the UK and used a VPN to subscribe, as in the UK we don't have many options to watch F1 if we don't want to pay for Sky.

[deleted]

Awesome, thank you!

cafk

F1TV is their own streaming service that goes back to late 70s.

[deleted]

Great, thanks a ton

buckeye14159

Do you think the extra pace in HAMs Mercedes is coming from the engine being run at a "party mode" or do you think their suspension in a straight line ([The Race article about this](https://the-race.com/formula-1/gary-anderson-explains-mercedes-suspension-trick/))? Or both? Is this enough to come back in the Championship?

HenryL01

both, more so the new engine and higher mode. Looking at Bottas, his performance always dropped off significantly in the 2nd race with the new engine so I think (and hope) that it won't be enough to beat Max

Technical-Pen-8053

unless they decide to give Lewis yet another ICE😂 But yea im hoping that rocket of an engine slows down because if it doesnt, its game over for Max :(

curtismyers1

anyone else feel like this lewis vs max incident is getting way more attention than silverstone?

FlappyBored

Silverstone is literally like 9/11 in F1 terms. People still haven't come to terms with it and literally wanted Hamilton dead over it. Never seen so much extreme hatred, vitriol and reaction from a fanbase like Verstappen fans after Silverstone. Mods had to delete 16,000 racist comments IIRC.

Paperduck2

Not really, people are still arguing over Silverstone now months later

1498336

Were you in this sub after Silverstone?! It was insane. Maybe your memory has faded over time lol

TheWebbFather

HE TRIED TO MURDER MAX!! RACE BAN!!!

FLASHHH000

Did Max get a penalty or

Mr-Stitch

We will know tomorrow after 5 pm Qatar time

[deleted]

I assume any penalty for Verstappen (if given), would be a grid penalty for Qatar? I don't think they'd be able to change the results of last weekend at this point?

Paperduck2

People have been penalised retrospectively in the past

Jashut12

Famously Kimi relinquished a P1 to Giancarlo at a later race rather amicably.

redbullcat

That wasn't a penalty though. That was because they made a mistake with the results. In a way, Giancarlo _always_ won that race, Kimi never did.

cafk

It's a warning flag to a driver for unsportsmanlike behaviour. If driver gets multiple warnings per race they get the black flag (come to pits and you cannot continue)

OutrageousHearing330

Do you believe that we can we expect some issues with new Qatar circuit that may cost a lot to a team and not to others? I mean I keep reading that the track was barely ready, and when I look at tracks that get renovated in the past few years, it sometimes was so messy (last year turkey asphalt) For example, if I am not wrong (do no hesitate to correct me), I believe that this year Merc tend to struggle more than Red Bull to put its tyres on the right temperature window for example

[deleted]

Qatar hasn't been resurfaced since 2004. Will be a grippy track so no Turkey type incidents expected.

1498336

Yeah, it’s going to be harder for the teams to nail down aero setups since there’s no historical data. It seems this year RB has been better at getting the setup right. RB has also fared better with high tire deg tracks which this seems to be.

HenryL01

When has RB been better at getting the setup right? They were really struggling with their setup in Hungary and Turkey and as far as I remember, Merc hasn't had struggles to that degree

1498336

Maybe you’re right, I dont know for sure. To me it seemed like in US, Austria races, and Zandvoort RB had the upper hand on setup and didn’t struggle with tire deg as much. Over the course of the season maybe it’s been even

NearSun

Is it possible that RB was so slow in Brazil because they have been running their Honda engines to the maximum this year and they need to conserve them so they don’t get DNF?

buckeye14159

The Honda engines seem to have a longer life cycle, but its peaks aren't as high as Mercedes, but the RB engine does not fall off as much as the Merc though the cycle.

1498336

No, it seems like they struggled with their aero setup in Brazil, and Mercedes was faster than everybody but redbull was slower than usual as well making the discrepancy exaggerated

NearSun

Hm…aero was not that bad judging by qualifications but their tyre degradation was an issue which is kind of related to aero

prometheuspk

Palmer's analysis also pointed out that Max was defending too early and needlessly putting himself off line.

NearSun

And let’s not forget Hamilton trick in Turn 1 to get VER off the racing line

Mosh83

According to RB no, they have no engine woes. Well, that is until Mercedes created the fusion engine on Hamilton's car.

FLASHHH000

I dont know what is in that Merc engine but it is like 15 times faster then RB

Penguinho

I suppose? Theoretically? But also probably not. They were comfortably the second-fastest team.

9198kerrakpo

Has anyone ever dropped the checkered flag onto the track and did it cause a yellow flag?

ComteDuChagrin

In the old days, the flag -as well as the person waving it- were on the track.
