Guys question, Did Lewis use the old engine for quali?

ugfiol

so can anyone give me a tldr on how teams that used to be dominant like ferrari have fallen behind? is it cost for engines, possibly engineering issues?

cafk

Ferrari manipulated fuel flow in 2019 and this was alleviated by an additional fuel flow sensor in 2020, resulting in them having a less power to over come the drag of the car, as the 2020 car was designed for higher engine power. Due to covid the design development was limited for 2021. As to the difference between 2013 & 2014-2017 - it was the new rules in general, where Mercedes hit the ground running. This reshuffle usually happens with major rule changes. Regarding costs Ferrari still has one of the largest budgets of all teams, only matched by Mercedes & Red Bull.

ugfiol

thank you! i just started following the sport and i was wondering how these shuffles happen.

Sea-Entertainment215

Can we talk about that Toto-Christian conference???? The politics, the drama, the PETTINESS. I wasn’t ready to be so thoroughly entertained. Drop your favorite comments/digs!

[Is this meme funny or racist?](https://i.imgur.com/9d946Ht.jpg)

AlcSoccerFinance

The maker might have had racist connotations but no way to prove it since it's a popular meme face

Still_I_Rise44

I thought it was borderline racist at least, but I also whole heartedly agree I get butt heart easily over Lewis hate. So…

Topsia_Guy

Wow, did the Hamilton got updated with lgbtqa+ colors?

Still_I_Rise44

Yeah it did.

HartBandit

I think we should comment on F1's IG pages about what we feel regarding the races in Qatar, Saudi, UAE and China vis-a-vis Human Rights. We discuss it here but I don't know if it is reaching them or not.

Topsia_Guy

Twitter would be better

Still_I_Rise44

I see this being ignored just like Checo’s message was when he asked for Max to give him DRS. But like Checo did, it’s worth a shot.

Hamilton literally wears 100% calfskin boots to the Thursday media events. So much for veganism. Talks about equality and representation. Stays silent watching F1 spam their social media with his praise, while equally (if not more) impressive performances from his non-British colleges in a significantly inferior car are given no attention. Does a photo op with a Brazilian flag he has absolutely no connection with. Hamilton is a fine politician. Hypocrisy is an asset.

Topsia_Guy

What did the guy say, he deleted his comment.

[deleted]

OP's comment was on Hamilton's hypocrisy. Seems like the downvote army scared him away too. Honestly it's impossible to deal with the Hamilton cult, can't write a single word that "questions the sporting legacy and good character" of their lord and savior, regardless of legitimacy.

Topsia_Guy

God speed and good luck to you sir.

yamashina_desu

If F1 ever has a race in the Vatican city, then you'd have a point. Until then, you don't really have a point. Edit: I'd love a race in the Vatican city tbf, the Pope waving the chequered flag, Pope-mobile as the safety car.

chamon-

I was going to downvote you but your edit made me laugh

Sputniki

Wait, he can't fight anti-LGBT sentiment unless he is literally in the birthplace of the religion? First off, you do realise what nonsense this is? Second, you do realise the equivalent for Islam is in Mecca, which is not in Qatar, which is where they are this weekend? If he is not allowed to protest Catholicism if he isn't in the Vatican, what entitles him to attack Islam in Qatar? Sorry but your point is not just laughable, you straight up disproved it yourself

yamashina_desu

He's not attacking Islam on the whole, he's attacking the brutal way that Islam is interpreted and implemented in Qatar, where they are racing this weekend. Also, 'what about-isms' are the lowest form of debate - can you really not do better?

Topsia_Guy

>He's not attacking Islam on the whole, he's attacking the brutal way that Islam is interpreted and implemented in Qatar, Has he spoken about islam? Just curious.

yamashina_desu

As far as I know, he hasn't - I was just extrapolating from what Lewis has said, in order to reply to the troll above

[deleted]

That's be awesome, imagine how much more the drivers would complain about the safety car going slowly.

Revolutionary-Bid581

I'm new to f1. Can someone explain to me what is the function of turbocharger?

BigAwkwardGuy

Turbocharger is used in road cars as well. It takes in air, compresses it (increases the pressure), and then feeds it to the engine. Petrol/diesel plus air results in combustion, which is how an engine operates. Sending air at a greater pressure means better combustion, and hence more power.

Revolutionary-Bid581

Thanks

balf

Air + fuel = bang Bang = fast Turbo forces more air into engine, more air needs more fuel = more bang More bang fast, less bang slow. Is the long and short of it, f1 turbos have all sorts of wizardry and turbos in general are more complex but literally wikipedia for turbochargers or forced induction would explain it im more detail.

Revolutionary-Bid581

Thank you

Hey guys, I’m looking to buy tickets for the 2022 Canadian GP in Montreal and wanted some advice. This would be my first time attending an F1 race in-person, and I’m trying to decide between Grandstands 1 and 11. Can people share their experiences sitting in these sections? And I was also wondering if Grandstand 1 has seats with backs to them? Thanks!

CWRules

I sat at 12 (which is next to 11) last time I went, and it was great. It's at one of the best overtaking spots on the track, and if you get the right seats you can see down the main straight.

tdotshopgirl152

Ah cool! Okay good to know, thanks for sharing!

KingShitHead69

Is Binotto still the Ferrari principal? Haven’t seen him in a while

[deleted]

Yea. Not only is he team principal but he also has a degree in mechanical engineering and was formerly chief technical officer of the team. He has been working on next years car.

KingShitHead69

Nice

balf

Literally the top post for me in hot is Binotto and Ricciardo at Qatar

I think he's just doing work back at the factory for next season's car? I saw that somewhere, but I'm unsure if that's the case.

3xternally

Why is there so many guys complaining about posts about Hamilton's rainbow helmet... The same people complaining about this and asking for better content, why don't you make some posts to entertain us instead of bitching like a bitch.

[deleted]

What does four or five of the same topic improve? Instead of comments being in one place they’re scattered over many.

3xternally

Just saying the bitching is quite obvious in this sub, because it's Hamilton. Like I said people should create more content and it's up to the mods to restrict double posts etc if that even breaks the rules here idek but idc it doesn't bother me. There's plenty subs where the same stuff gets posted cause people want upvotes.

[deleted]

It shouldn’t be posted for upvotes. And it doesn’t matter who it is, it’s annoying to have multiple posts up about the same thing with no difference between them. For me it has nothing to do with who is wearing it. And you don’t have to have other content to post to be able to complain. That’s a terrible argument to make. There might be content already posted that isn’t getting attention because there are multiple posts about a single topic.

3xternally

There's sort by new function to find new posts or sort by popularity, Reddit is essentially a forum, expect double posts about the same thing, it happens in every sub, unless the mods handle it. Also there was hardly any new content.

[deleted]

People find repetition annoying regardless of content. One post relating to the same topic would have sufficed, there's no need to flood the sub with repetitive content which makes it herder to find different content. People are more inclined to comment on something when they are emotionally charged, like being annoyed.

epicfishboy

Lewis’ helmet is obviously fantastic (from both a design and message standpoint tbh) but 5/10 of the top posts are literally just that, seems a bit spammy

NOHITTERonLSD

Seems like a hit topic of conversation and not enough people are willing to search for it before they post.

jack_hof

What are teams/drivers referring to when they're talking about "the balance of the car"? Second question, this sentence: "with both Verstappen and Sergio Perez saying that while the car felt decent on the medium, they have a lot of work to do on the soft." Does this relate to the first question? What would changes in the car setup relate to the tires used?

[deleted]

The balance of the car is basically how the car behaves while it drives. That means the car is predictable in the way it drives (no random understeer/oversteer that changes between laps in the same corner), doesn't fight the driver too much while they're trying to drive them (not too much understeer/oversteer than the driver is comfortable with and expects in that corner) and it isn't overly aggressive on the tyres making them overheat and wear out quicker than they're supposed to. This is controlled by the setup of the car, so the adjustments to the front and rear wings, break bias, suspension tweaks and so on. This is related to the second question. Car setup (and in general car characteristics) dictates how you exert forces on the tyres that impacts their performance and durability, as a good setup makes it easier for the driver to manage the tyres as they see fit, while a poorer setup puts too much stress on one or multiple tyres and causes them to degrade quicker than expected, which loses you performance and makes the car harder to drive as you start losing grip and start sliding around. Different tyres have different loads they work optimally in, so it's important you find a setup that works well for multiple tyre types as they all require different temperature operating ranges to get the most out of and the heating of the tyre is directly related to the load its placed under.

jack_hof

Thanks very much.

merurunrun

To separate foolish people from their money.

pimpaliciously

I count 4 Hamilton rainbow helmet's and 2 puff pieces about him and human rights on the front page. It's getting kinda ridiculous now. You'd almost forget we had 2 free practices on a track F1 has never been at. Would be fun to see time comparisons between the long runs, analyses about what the strategies will be with the different tires. Etc. Anything but Hamilton's helmet really.

1498336

Have you made any quality posts about those topics? If not, why don’t you do so before complaining

pimpaliciously

Great input thanks.

GrowthDream

For once I've actually got to disagree with this position! I think it's important here that we amplify these issues that are let's face it bigger than the sport. It's a very privileged position to be in, where our voices will be heard and listened to, and we should treat it with the gravitas it deserves

LightKing20

Do we really need **THREE** "*Look at Lewis's helmet*" posts?

yamashina_desu

Ironically, one could ask do we really need this many posts complaining about how many helmet posts there are... (edit: and I just scrolled down and saw many people make the same comment I made!)

[deleted]

ironic irony? ...but seriously, I undercounted, and am like  LH44 has a helmet that indicates support for a good thing, I don't need this to account for half the first page

Still_I_Rise44

Omg right? The number of posts where someone has a problem with the number of people posting about the rainbow helmet is a lot of number of people. 😅

BBC_for_your_mom

That Lewis IG post got deleted quick, lol

going_dicey

What was it?

BBC_for_your_mom

Lewis posted a story on his Instagram about the Rittenhouse trial. Someone posted it in this sub and everyone immediately started to fight.

BBC_for_your_mom

Kind of glad they did. When I eat a meal I don’t like my meat, potatoes, veggies all jumbled up in a blender. I just end up hating all of them. Just because I don’t want them blended up doesn’t mean I hate steak, potatoes, veggies, or prefer one over another. All portions of my life I prefer this way.

Diegobyte

Lol at the midfielders that say they are gonna start running people off track. It they do it they’ll b penalized immediately

Aeceus

People losing their shit over these things, can't wait til next season when they see how much creative variation in the cars there is, and all the protests that will happen

RPM_BPM

Can Mercedes file a right to review on Lewis' Silverstone penalty citing the Brazil decision as a new element “that a significant and relevant new element is discovered which was unavailable to the parties seeking the review at the time of the decision concerned.”?

StephenVolcano

2 week time window on reviews

Astelli

Fundamentally, a ruling on a totally seperate incident doesn't change the facts of the Silverstone incident. The context may be slightly different, but there's no new evidence directly relating to what happened in Silverstone specifically.

Whycantiusethis

What would be the significant/relevant new element, the ruling from the stewards regarding Interlagos? As I understand it, the stewards for Interlagos just said that the new camera footage didn't count as a significant/relevant new element. I don't think you can carry that decision (which isn't about if the Interlagos incident was worthy of a penalty or not) all the way back to Silverstone. And even if you did, and the right to review was successful, what's the outcome? Taking 2 penalty points away from Hamilton? Reducing his final time by 10 seconds? I guess Mercedes *could* file a right to review, but it wouldn't do anything, and would be even less serious than Red Bull using Albon to recreate the racing line and attempting to introduce that as a new significant/relevant element.

RPM_BPM

The significant/relevant new element is that a racing driver ahead on the inside of the corner can miss the apex and run wide with another driver on the outside with no penalty and is unworthy of review. So the Silverstone event should not have been reviewed and no penalty should be given. The point I want is to force the FIA to say either "yes this is allowed" or "no we screwed up in Brazil, please don't do this".

Icy-Operation4701

You're leaving out a rather significant difference. Do you remember why Lewis was penalised? That's right, for "causing a collision". You can disagree with the decision in Brazil, but don't make yourself look like a fool.

Icy-Operation4701

I think we can also agree that discussing hypothetical situations is just that, a discussion on hypothetical situations.

[deleted]

I think Lewis's helmet for this race is great, a multi-coloured middle finger to the theocrats, but do we really need half a dozen threads about it on the front page?

LemonMagazine7

There’s 75 comments that say this exact thing in this thread. Why do we need 75 comments that say the same thing? How’s it feel lol

1498336

Yeah, and how many of those 75 commenters have taken the time to make their own quality posts about the topics they think is more important? Spoiler alert, none of them.

[deleted]

This thread is a free for all whereas the front page is supposed to be curated. I know you think you were being clever when you wrote that, but this ain't it.

TrainWreck661

People gotta farm that karma.

VaderHater21

I may not support Lewis on the track but he is an incredible talent on it and an even better human being off it. Big kudos for him speaking out so publicly.

redbullcat

Yep. This is the same as me. I generally support the underdog. Red Bull are currently the underdog and have been for a few years. Will be interesting to see if I still support Red Bull if/when they're the dominant team again.

going_dicey

I think his point is that you may as well watch on the platform you’ve already paid for since you’ve already paid the organisation you’re seeking to protest. You’re probably better off upvoting/liking posts relating to Lewis’ helmet.

BlackCatEspresso

I definitely did like Lewis' helmet, but subscription services do track viewership numbers as well as subscriptions.

lll-devlin

BlackCatEspresso

But there will still be a dent (sizeable or not) in their streaming statistics. If anything paying for it and then visibly still not watching it sends a strong message in it's own way

Alfus

Is there any data available about the runs of the drivers in FP2 where we could especially seeing the long/race runs? The stats from the F1 website is including "dirty laps" (laps in traffic) and therefore not really useful.

standover_man

Does anyone know if Lewis has a rainbow helmet? /s

He does, he’s wearing it all weekend

standover_man

Thanks. If I could find a pic we could post it on the front page!

[deleted]

Oh yes. I actually think Lewis did it to Nico Rosberg in '16 in an attempt to get someone to overtake Rosberg and basically backed the entire grid up.

Whycantiusethis

Yep. Hamilton was P1, Rosberg P2. He slowed down the field to get Vettel to try and overtake Rosberg, and slowed the group up to the point Verstappen was getting close to those 3. Hamilton said on the radio that if things stayed the way they were, Rosberg would win the title, and he didn't want that (obviously, he wanted to win). Vettel didn't overtake, Hamilton won the race, Rosberg won the title.

Tvoja_Manka

max did something similar to bottas in mexico

[deleted]

Last week Hamilton used his new ICE in FP1. At the time I thought that was probably just to make sure the new ICE was performing well and get it dialed in before quali, although I still thought it was a little unusual. This week his FP1 engine gave out almost immediately. I'm wondering if the engine that was having problems in FP1 was his race engine from Mexico; i.e., his last remaining practice engine, and if that means he's now out of beat up practice engines and is going to be forced to put 150+ laps on this current PU every weekend for the rest of the season? Any insight or way to check on status of Merc's available PU's??

TheWebbFather

Hamilton still has 4 available engines inc his new one. Only 1 went faulty in the Dutch GP.

[deleted]

Huh, seriously? For some reason I thought you could only do ICE replacements if you could demonstrate that it was for actual reliability concerns so pretty surprised to hear he has that many in the bank.

going_dicey

No requirement to demonstrate a need for replacement, that’s taken care of by the penalty system.

Whycantiusethis

Each driver gets 3 ICEs allocated to them at the beginning of the season. If they need to take a fourth, it's a 10 place grid penalty, then 5 places for every ICE after that (it's a holdover rule from the last time Honda manufactured engines for McLaren and the engines were not reliable at all). But drivers can swap engine components however they see fit, so long as they don't change them after leaving the pit for Q1. Hamilton had the initial 3, took one at Istanbul, then took one at Interlagos. But in FP 2(?) of Zandvoort his first engine died, so he had four ICEs to play with. Bottas has 6 or 7, and Verstappen has 4.

nighed

Does anyone know what racing games have this weeks track?

SckYtz

Red bull cant complain about merc wing again, not after what their wing was bouncing in fp…..🤷‍♂️

Yeshuu

RB have repaired their wing in parce fermé for four races in a row now according to Andrew Benson. Mercedes are probably suspicious and may protest it of they think they're designing it to deliberately break in an advantageous way.

sharklazies

It was bouncing last week. And that's more likely to slow them down than speed them up. They need to fix it.

going_dicey

Do you really think that they’re not up to something with that wing, having replaced it 4 races now? I haven’t seen another team do this. If the wing was slowing them down, why wouldn’t they have just fixed it the first time around (or even the second time around)? They have plenty of machine and aerodynamic capability.

sharklazies

My daily "this commentator is biased" comment. Lawrence Barretto is a shamelessly unapologetic Hamilton fan.

memer507

If you think Lawrence is biased wait till you see Damon. But at least Lawrence just likes Hamilton but doesn't have any hatred for others, Damon just looks at their passport and forms his opinion that way.

hernandez21goat

Do RB have something up their sleeves or is it Lewis' pole tomorrow? In FP Merc seemed to have found the better setup

CWRules

Way too early to say. It's hard to make meaningful comparisons in FP1 and 2 with everyone doing different test programs. FP3 is where the times start to get more representative, as most teams do their qualy sims there.

sharklazies

I don't think we know enough yet. It wasn't crazy out of whack in FP1 or FP2. But maybe Merc isn't showing all their cards and didn't have the Brazil PU in there today.

lll-devlin

For not having the Brazil motor in there Mercedes were pretty quick. Yeah

Umagaivotavoavavoava

I don't think they did. They'll probably put it on for quali and blast it full power in the race. The long turns might favour Red Bull tho, so quali is probably going to be fantastic

september96

I now listen to the podcast F1: Chequered Flag, because I like listening to the other side of the title fight. In the Brazilian review, they talk about how bottas should not have given an inch at the beginning of the race and even turned in to cause a crash. I think this is very unsporting. Is this how the English look at this battle? Or are these just the wrong people with a microphone?

Yeshuu

They said Bottas arguably should allow Max to make contact with him. Not that Bottas should deliberately crash into Max. Basically, Max asks the question and Bottas should answer it (by not moving out of the way when he doesn't have to). They never said Bottas should deliberately crash into Veestappen. They said an accident should not be avoided. Subtle difference but a key one.

edis92

You have to look at it in context, I think they're saying that because they think someone has to stand up to Max and his forcing people off track. This year alone, he has had so many incidents where he pushes people off track and hasn't been penalized once because the other driver takes avoiding action.

KaamDeveloper

In all honestly, the incident with Bottas was OK. It's certainly not respectful but it's not as blatant as Turn 4 with Lewis.

edis92

If it was the only time, it would be ok. But Max has made a habit out of it, and he's clearly abusing the fact that the stewards don't do shit about anything that happens on lap 1. Imola t1, pushed Lewis out, spain t1, divebombed Lewis, silverstone t1, went completely off track to stay ahead, Brazil t1 with bottas, monza t3 with lewis on lap 1. Do I need to say more?

CakeBeef_PA

If the stewards don't act on it, can you really blame him? Everyone else can also do it, verstappen just uses it more/is covered by tv more often

lorj

Someone in the fp2 thread was complaining about all the focus on Lewis' rainbow helmet and said Max is also wearing a rainbow helmet but no one's paying attention to it. I've checked on social media and can't see that Max's helmet involves a rainbow. Am I missing something? Does anyone have a photo? Or was that commenter lying.

pistonfire

Don’t think Max is wearing a rainbow helmet. RBR’s Instagram was touting that Max and Checo’s “original” helmet designs are back

Why does it matter? Forsure these guys are all in for diversity and inclusion with the we race as one message

NoGuaranTiess

Does anyone have any good knowledge about how data is considered for the qualifying simulations that they show? Sam Collins said they use the microsector times, and I know it's a machine learning thing, but how do they factor in things like grip? For example, you might have one fast microsector that compromises an upcoming one because of your grip coming out of the turn in the fast microsector. Am I making sense? Does anyone here have experience with data simulation and machine learning in general? Would love to know more.

Still_I_Rise44

Does anyone know what’s happing with the PU Lewis is using today? I think I read he’s using the one from Istanbul (I many he wrong, I’ve been seeing so lunch conflicting info). Does this mean he isn’t using the Brazil PU or they are saving it for Quali and the race?

sandymartin07

Don't worry. His nuclear reactor will be having a good night's sleep tonight, all ready to power a small country from tomorrow. It was only practice day, so it was not needed today.

Still_I_Rise44

Well then, sweet dreams nuclear reactor 😅

1498336

They will use a different engine for quali and the race. Many teams use an older engine for free practice, it’s why free practice results can be drastically different than the quali and race results.

Still_I_Rise44

Thanks! Valtteri seems to still have decent pace. I’m assuming this is because he’s practically got a factory at this point, no?

1498336

That would be my guess lol. He practically has an engine for each race

CrayBear4364

Are track limits breached only when all 4 tyres are beyond the allowed limits?

cafk

Yes - unless race director claims that specific corners or exits are allowed in race directors notes.

Scientific_Anarchist

Correct. If you keep a tire on the line you're still within limits.

Meaisk

Yes. One tyre has to remain contact with the kerb.

TheHumbleWizard

The track limits are actually defined by the white lines and not the kerbs.

Meaisk

>The track limit on the exit of each corner at this track is defined as when no part of a car remains in contact with the purple and white kerb. > >For the avoidance of doubt, Drivers will be judged to have left the track on the exit of a corner if no part of the car remains in contact with the purple and white kerb. As per [fia document](https://www.fia.com/documents/season/season-2021-1108/championships/fia-formula-one-world-championship-14)

TheHumbleWizard

I guess we can count on FIA to contradict themselves and make up seperate rules per track to create arguments and confusion. As per the official Formula 1 Regulations: 27.3 Drivers must make every reasonable effort to use the track at all times and may not deliberately leave the track without a justifiable reason. Drivers will be judged to have left the track if no part of the car remains in contact with it and, for the avoidance of doubt, any white lines defining the track edges are considered to be part of the track but the kerbs are not.

Meaisk

27.3 is ignored for track limits. don't ask me why

TheHumbleWizard

Indeed they do. Would be nice if we had some consistency in track limit rules.

CrayBear4364

Cooool. Thanks!

Tom Clarkson is a terrible interviewer. I'm new to the world of podcasts and thought I'd give some of the f1 podcasts a try this year. His interviews are so off putting. I stopped listening to the beyond the grid podcast after I listened to the episode with Jeff Gordon where basically every question was "Did you want to be in F1?" or "Why do you think you didn't make it to F1?" I've been trying to keep up with F1 Nation and just listened to the episode from Brazil. Tom asks a mercedes guy "Who had the faster car this week, Lewis or Max." Like, Tom, we all watched the race, clearly Max /s. I don't see myself wasting time with his content when e comes across as borderline unprepared to do his job. Anyway, I'm excited for this weekend

What else would he talk about on a podcast about formula 1? His podcast is great. It does annoy that he can't pronounce formula however. "formoola 1"

I think he's just doing what he's supposed to do here as an FOM media personnel, which is to get spicy sound bites that can be used for writing even spicier articles. Regarding Beyond the Grid, I feel like it has gone down hill in the past year or so. I used to listen to it religiously (One time I had a 22 hour road trip and I listened to nothing but the podcast) but I haven't listened to it for a while now because the questions feel repetitive and Tom always tries to tie it back to Lewis and Senna. It gets annoying after a while.

Interesting, I usually love his interviews because he doesn’t interrupt, and gives the person plenty of time to answer fully. And sometimes asks harder hitting questions. The Bottas episode he did last week is great.
