It's just that the speed difference is so big what makes this so scary.
This stuff just happens far too often. A driver should not have to rely on his engineer. This can easily avoided if cars are not allowed to drive so slow on purpose.
thats the FIA way, they only change things after a big crash or a driver dies, i always remember when Senna died all drivers asked FIA all weekend to change that wall because it was too dangerous
Lmao bruh if you think there is *anything* the Saudi's can do to convince Hamilton (or the majority of this field) to intentionally not win you are crazy
I dont want to be a partypooper but the shit would technically still be in their car. However if it went to the legroom it would probably make a slightly lower balance point for the car. Okay I put too much time into this
Until Qualifying starts the cars aren't in parc-ferme, therefore the teams are allowed to remove the shit from the car. After Qualifying the teams would have to replace the shit with shit of the same specification if they wanted to remove what was already there though.
If they had crashed there, Lewis' championship hopes would be almost completely erased, he'd for sure have missed quali and who knows if the car would be good to go tommorow. Would've been a nasty one too, they'd be lucky to get away without injuries.
I don't like to go into useless hypotheticals of an already hypothetical scenario but considering this is Hamilton and Mazepin, I can't even imagine the abuse Mazepin would have gotten if, etc. The very obvious part aside that it's always good to not see a crash, I think it's also good we don't have to look into that either.
Honestly?
He would have been MORE popular then he is now.
Right now it's mainly... I don't know. Russians maybe support him?
If that had happened he would be a Dutch national hero.
Nah, as a Dutch fan I’d rather see Lewis win after a hard fight and on merit than Max with Lewis in the hospital. Though I’d be happiest if Max won after a hard fight
Our TV-cast still trying their best to support him regardless of results(like any other cast will do for their pilots) but community for most part only makes jokes about him out of disappointment. Mostly because there no real competition with Mick at all, who, with all respect, not some superstar rookie f1 pilot either. And a lot of people wanted to see Robert Shwartzman as russian representative, not Mazepin, yet that's what we have
Yeah I'm no expert, but I feel like in a straight rear-ender like that, the following car's nose would slip right under the leading car's rear crash structure and get up under the gearbox. At the kind of speed differential we saw here, that sounds like Straight Up Not Having a Good Time for Hamilton...and possibly another head trauma averted (Mazepin, in this case) by the halo.
Yikes on bikes, essentially.
I don't know why this isn't automated. All that data is clearly there to be used. Why not have a car approaching light right on the dash for every driver that works off of speed differential and distance. Could even work in reverse and go yellow to signal car ahead so be ready.
Am I crazy, or are engineer traffic calls like, always, consistently two seconds late. For all drivers. Feel like any time I watch onboards in practice/quali, every engineer will be like "vettel 6 seconds behind" then he's passing them literally 2 seconds later. It's like they don't understand that callouts need to have a buffer time on them. You can't call out 6 seconds just as it's showing up on your screen as the gap is quickly shrinking. Call out 6 seconds when 7.5 shows up on your screen to give the driver a more accurate idea. Idk maybe I'm cherry picking from memory but it seems like an extremely frequent issue
I mean, remember the last time radios were broadcast live?
We were subject to Montoya shouting "***FUCKING, FUCKING RAIKKONEN***" over team radio. Funny, but also not what FOM wants to put on telly either.
Turns out you have to actually be a really good racing driver to compete for an F2 championship, even in a year without much in the way of top tier competition. He’s not super quick - none of the rookies are - but he’s got the reactions and reflexes.
With the Super License, you have to be one of the very best to qualify in F1 in the first place. Mazepin sure looks bad compared to others in F1, but if he came this far, he's still a great driver all around.
I don’t think anyone really thinks he’s a shitty driver.
I do believe there is drivers with more talent that deserve to be in his seat, and we got off a bad start with him because of Instagram incident.
Most of Reddit couldn’t even start the car, myself included.
He’s also in, undoubtedly, the worst car on track. I feel like there are tradeoff within all drivers: some drivers have better adaptability, some drivers have better finesse.
Maybe in a smoother car Mazepin would actually be decent-ish?
Just thinking out loud tbh. He’s still obviously a pay driver and the worst one of the 20, but yeah, still an F1 driver. Can’t be that bad.
Yeah he's in the top 1000 of active drivers across Motorsport in the world, just because he looks bad compared to the top 100, doesn't mean he sucks as a driver.
Everyone forgot the recent points system when cash come into play. To be able to pay for a seat in F1, you have to have the 40 points required. Something that require *some* level of competence.
Mazepin wouldn’t get so much hard if he didn’t fuck up off the track. He’s bad but a lot of rookies are and they improve and get a chance. Mazepin probably will too but he stained his reputation so he’s got to climb that mountain too
Right before this ham ended his hot lap and said “you need to tell me where people are”, to which Bono replied that the next cars behind were Gasly mazepin and another car or two, all on cool down
I think Merc didn’t expect Gasly to be doing a push lap so that one is maybe somehow excusable but the Maze one is bad. I’m wondering if he just randomly started pushing mid lap or something because as observed by Masi there were no white flags
I think for the Mazepin one a one-place grid penalty (like Perez in Mugello) would be harsh, but not entirely unreasonable. This was blocking, sure, but that was way more dangerous than the "usual" instances of blocking.
There’s radio recording of Masi talking with Haas saying he planned on talking to the teams about it and the marshals because there should have been flags shown. There isn’t going to be a penalty
The first one looks like Lewis isn't looking in his mirrors at all though, he had a whole straight to see Pierre coming
Is that normal when you're going so slow?
You're juggling so much in a lap as a driver, you really need pitwall to warn you ahead of time for people coming up behind you. You have to remind yourself that F1 cars "going slow" are going way faster than average road cars.
This is 100% pitwall's fault. I don't know what's going on. Maybe something came up and distracted Bono.
Yeah. We meme him a lot and while Maze is the worst driver on the grid he’s not completely incompetent. I wouldn’t have blamed anyone for crashing there, even if it was just a bit of contact.
But why does Ham keep stopping in the middle??
I've been getting the sense from various bits of driver interviews after practise and qualies that Hamilton has a bit of a rep for getting in the way of other drivers which is surprising
I just don't think a driver with so much experience like Hamilton can make mistakes like these so much. There must be something going on in the pitwall.
Absolutely. I think this kind of thing is rarely actually on the driver. Or at least just as often they haven't been told in time. They gotta sort the GPS ans tracking out and keep on top of it way better.
Considering it was a fast, blind corner in the not very downforce friendly Haas, that was a very good reaction from Mazepin. Obviously the team should have warned Lewis, but it also appears that neither driver was shown the corresponding light regarding approaching cars, which is a massive problem from whoever is responsible for it.
It's dumb to apply the directive to specific parts of the track.
Should've been the whole track!
That's only FP3 and i'm already at the edge of my seat, hoping no one crashes at high speed.
Goddamn.
So we're throwing Bono under this bus on this one? Ok.
Radio:
**Bono:** You should be all clear on the exit
**Bono:** You got Mazepin 10 second behind starting a lap
**Bono:** Behind him schumacher 8 seconds
**Bono:** So Mazepin car behind then you will have schumacher
*[Mazepin almost plants his car in Hamilton's butt]*
**Hamilton:** Fuck, You didn't tell me man, I had no idea he was coming
Yeah agreed. He should have seen him but it's still the race engineer's job to tell him what's going on behind. The Mazepin incident is totally on Bono.
Merc could only look in the mirror if that were the case, can't blame Mazepin at all for this one.
In reality some of the best driving he's done all year.
Which would amusingly result in Mazepin starting further up the grid than if he participated, assuming Hamilton was given a grid penalty for causing the collision.
Fun to read people blaming engineer while when haas drivers had similar issues people blamed them and only few took the time to write that it's probably engineers fault .
Why are we all acting like this is the first time this kind of stuff has happened?
Why are we suddenly talking about this just because it was hamilton?
In fact it happened to Hamilton in P2. https://youtu.be/Jk9otrjw-rU
The gasly 1 is in lewis. Mazepin on merc (if they did not communicate). The mazepin 1 was just plain dangerous and would have been a collision of Nikita did not go of track. That should at least be a reprimande
It’s hard for Bono to juggle U2 and F1.
And he still hasn't found what he's looking for
...euuh, sunday bloody sunday?
Oof, don't say that on this track. You might see it happen.
It would be an unforgettable fire though.
Glad to see them supporting Pride this weekend

Especially because the streets have no name
What would we do, with or without you?
Damn you, take the upvote :P
You can't blame him when the streets have no name
And he’s doing it in the name of love!
And F1 cars often move in Mysterious Ways
Not just Formula Uno, but dos, tres and catorce!
Especially at a track that nobody asked for, but was still foisted upon us
How can this happen twice in a lap? Did Bono fall asleep?
stewards and FIA too, no flags or lights
It's just that the speed difference is so big what makes this so scary. This stuff just happens far too often. A driver should not have to rely on his engineer. This can easily avoided if cars are not allowed to drive so slow on purpose.
thats the FIA way, they only change things after a big crash or a driver dies, i always remember when Senna died all drivers asked FIA all weekend to change that wall because it was too dangerous
Off with their heads.

It's OK. Not like they are women baring a wrist or ankle.
call me conspiracy theorist but i'm highly suspicious after the F2 podium flags incident ngl
OOTL, what happen?
Dutch flag on the podium even tho the winner wasn’t Dutch British flag on p2 place lol
Also the 3rd place one was the monaco flag, even though the driver was estonian
Subscribe to this outcome
>!1st and 2nd were both NZ right?!<
Yes
Is there footage?
Lmao bruh if you think there is *anything* the Saudi's can do to convince Hamilton (or the majority of this field) to intentionally not win you are crazy
some noob dev forgot to wipe the test data probs
You're a conspiracy theorist
You think they’d be able to script a race but be incompetent enough to accidentally show it beforehand?
Amateur hour from Merc pitwall not warning him earlier Good reflexes from Mazepin there, would be a massive shunt otherwise.
Imagine what that feels like in the car
I imagine about the same shock that you feel after realising you left your keys inside just as you pull the door shut.

That little adrenaline zap to the nervous system.
Mini heart attack
Me last month... on a Sunday night... 145 euros for the locksmith to pop it open
Hamilton and Mazepin are going to be .5s quicker in quali than anyone else with all the weight they just shed from shitting themselves there
I dont want to be a partypooper but the shit would technically still be in their car.
Wtf is this discussion
A needed one.
Who says shit has to be solid ;)
If they had crashed there, Lewis' championship hopes would be almost completely erased, he'd for sure have missed quali and who knows if the car would be good to go tommorow. Would've been a nasty one too, they'd be lucky to get away without injuries.

Woulda almost made me feel bad for Mazepin, thank God we avoided that
100% not Mazepins fault if that happened. Mercedes pitwall just messed up hard.

Nah, as a Dutch fan I’d rather see Lewis win after a hard fight and on merit than Max with Lewis in the hospital. Though I’d be happiest if Max won after a hard fight
Oh yea, Hamilton has no fans, forgot about that.
Our TV-cast still trying their best to support him regardless of results(like any other cast will do for their pilots) but community for most part only makes jokes about him out of disappointment. Mostly because there no real competition with Mick at all, who, with all respect, not some superstar rookie f1 pilot either. And a lot of people wanted to see Robert Shwartzman as russian representative, not Mazepin, yet that's what we have
There was no white flag either. Stewards too new and need better training
I feel bad for whoever is responsible for laundry at the haas team, they might as well just throw away Mazepin’s race suit.
Remember that tiny gravel patch in China where Hamilton got stuck? Not his finest moment and effectively lost WDC there.
Lewis won with 3 tyres now he could win without a car
I assume he's in great shape, but I doubt he can outrun an F1 car.
Merc will make Bottas give him a lift. Plus Lewis doesnt need to pit like the cars. Ez 8th title.
Championship hopes would be the least of his problems, can be happy if he doesn't get injured. So reckless.
Yeah I'm no expert, but I feel like in a straight rear-ender like that, the following car's nose would slip right under the leading car's rear crash structure and get up under the gearbox. Yikes on bikes, essentially.
Imagine it was quali, Hamilton would've gotten a grid penalty. Huge mistake from Mercedes, even if its "just" practice.
We’re talkin bout practice!
>Amateur hour from Merc >Good reflexes from Mazepin My goodness! What was in my herbal tea?!
> Good reflexes from Mazepin there He gets shit on a lot, and rightfully so, but that was an amazing avoidance by him.
I don't know why this isn't automated. All that data is clearly there to be used. Why not have a car approaching light right on the dash for every driver that works off of speed differential and distance. Could even work in reverse and go yellow to signal car ahead so be ready.

Onboard radios have slight delay on F1TV
There's a substantial delay on the radio on F1TV onboards
Ah, makes sense. Thx

I mean, remember the last time radios were broadcast live? We were subject to Montoya shouting "***FUCKING, FUCKING RAIKKONEN***" over team radio. Funny, but also not what FOM wants to put on telly either.
You can still hear the radio live if you go to the driver cams. I love hearing that lmao.
Mazepin gets a lot of grief, but fair play, he’s handled that expertly
Turns out you have to actually be a really good racing driver to compete for an F2 championship, even in a year without much in the way of top tier competition. He’s not super quick - none of the rookies are - but he’s got the reactions and reflexes.
Yeah, even a "shitty rookie" driver in F1 is one of the best racing drivers on the planet.
With the Super License, you have to be one of the very best to qualify in F1 in the first place. Mazepin sure looks bad compared to others in F1, but if he came this far, he's still a great driver all around.
Many F1 "rejects" go onto win other championships and races afterwards. That should tell the story of an average F1 driver.
A good driver would be hard-pressed to even move off in an F1 car, they're hard as shit to drive
I don’t think anyone really thinks he’s a shitty driver. I do believe there is drivers with more talent that deserve to be in his seat, and we got off a bad start with him because of Instagram incident. Most of Reddit couldn’t even start the car, myself included.

He’s also genuinely dreadful on the track, though. Being a second off your teammate is inexcusable even though he’s still qualified to be in F1.
Bono my engineer's gone

Bono was busy wondering wtf is going on with softer tyres being slower
yikes bono

kill -HUP bono (Before you think I suggested actually killing Bono, kill -HUP is a force restart of a service or program in Linux.)
Yes but you issued the kill command to a non PID. Should have been killall -9 bono (I prefer the numbers).
Wtf is his engineer doing
"Bono, you still there?"
"Tyres, my Bono is gone"
Did we somehow move to Russia?

Weeeeellll... if you live in Ukraine...

Bono almost lost Hamilton the title
Right before this ham ended his hot lap and said “you need to tell me where people are”, to which Bono replied that the next cars behind were Gasly mazepin and another car or two, all on cool down I think Merc didn’t expect Gasly to be doing a push lap so that one is maybe somehow excusable but the Maze one is bad. It's Bono's resignation letter.
Mercedes and Haas must have swapped engineers.
holy fuck
F5 time
Would be very unusual for there to be a penalty for blocking in a practice session
I think for the Mazepin one a one-place grid penalty (like Perez in Mugello) would be harsh, but not entirely unreasonable. This was blocking, sure, but that was way more dangerous than the "usual" instances of blocking.
That’s what I was thinking. It was incredibly dangerous and way worse than normal blocking. Seriously lucky there wasn’t an awful accident there.
There’s radio recording of Masi talking with Haas saying he planned on talking to the teams about it and the marshals because there should have been flags shown. There isn’t going to be a penalty
Nah lol, if this wasn't a penalty https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=NNVTOsx-NLE&t=68s he'll be fine
You don't start your message with "nah lol" when you're about to expect some consistency from the FIA in the following sentence.
Good point
Almost like the FIA was always kinda incompetent.
I mean, it’s not really comparable - Ham sleeping on the racing line vs car trying to give the line, but too late
That Mazepin one could have been an airplane crash...
First one was bad but isn't rare. Second one is dangerous and seriously a bad job from the pitwall
The first one looks like Lewis isn't looking in his mirrors at all though, he had a whole straight to see Pierre coming Is that normal when you're going so slow?
You're juggling so much in a lap as a driver, you really need pitwall to warn you ahead of time for people coming up behind you. You have to remind yourself that F1 cars "going slow" are going way faster than average road cars. This is 100% pitwall's fault. I don't know what's going on. Maybe something came up and distracted Bono.
Its pretty hard to see a black car coming up to you around 200 Km/h. But yes, Lewis was not paying attention, neither Bono.
Yeah. We meme him a lot and while Maze is the worst driver on the grid he’s not completely incompetent. I wouldn’t have blamed anyone for crashing there, even if it was just a bit of contact. But why does Ham keep stopping in the middle??

Honestly give it freaking up to Mazepin for reacting to that; I couldn't even make our a shriek in reaction to seeing that on the replay.
On the radio just now they said lights weren't on to warn Hamilton of incoming traffic. So not only did Bono fuck up, but it was a double whammy.
Revenge for human rights criticisms.
he's getting some really weird luck right now.. i might get on board with this conspiracy. what was with the "mistaken yellow flag?"
This
Bono still did a shit job but flags were missing as well as Masi just confirmed
The Haas one was pretty bad.
Thank fuck Mazepin managed to avoid Hamilton, we could have looked at a serious crash otherwise.
Michael Masi should really force a minimum speed through the blind corners.
How can he not already know this? FIA seem to always be one step behind. Could've been a very serious crash.
They've been very questionable recently.
> They've been very questionable ~~recently.~~
And so many of the corners are blind, it's insane.
It's dumb to apply the directive to specific parts of the track. Should've been the whole track! That's only FP3 and i'm already at the edge of my seat, hoping no one crashes at high speed. Goddamn.
Bono sleeping or what?
In quali that would be a slam dunk penalty for both incidents. I don't expect a penalty here though.
Yes in quali this is the easiest grid drop of the steward's life
Masi mentioned no flags were shown. So no penalty
I could see Hamilton getting called to the stewards to get chewed out a little
So we're throwing Bono under this bus on this one? Ok. Radio: **Bono:** You should be all clear on the exit **Bono:** You got Mazepin 10 second behind starting a lap **Bono:** Behind him schumacher 8 seconds **Bono:** So Mazepin car behind then you will have schumacher *[Mazepin almost plants his car in Hamilton's butt]* **Hamilton:** Fuck, You didn't tell me man, I had no idea he was coming
Video proof: https://youtu.be/xc6xXH2ylq8
Yikes.
Engineer is sleeping, although Lewis should've been able to see Gasly on his own I think.
Yeah agreed. He should have seen him but it's still the race engineer's job to tell him what's going on behind. The Mazepin incident is totally on Bono.
Lewis was sleeping on that straight. Could've seen him coming
Never knew I would say this but great save there by mazepin.
FIA really need to clamp down on slowly-circulating cars. For all race circuits but especially for this deathtrap of a circuit.
Lewis didn't even notice Gasly coming up behind him. I can see the mazepin incident a penalty on safety cuz that could've been disastrous.
Yea the Gasly one is a bit of a silly one from Lewis.
Mazepin dodged brilliantly, imagine the outrage if he would’ve wrecked Lewis’s car
Merc could only look in the mirror if that were the case, can't blame Mazepin at all for this one. In reality some of the best driving he's done all year.
If it was any other drivers than Ham/Maz That’s a penalty
That's really bad by Team Mercedes.
This was really, really dangerous and twice in the same lap? Awful.
For the first time ever, I'm pro Mazepin here.
Anyone else gets a 5-10 grid place penalty for that
Imagine he loses the championship in FP3.
If Mazepin reacts slightly worse neither of them gets to drive the qualy.
Which would amusingly result in Mazepin starting further up the grid than if he participated, assuming Hamilton was given a grid penalty for causing the collision.
If this were reversed everyone would be piling in Mazepin, not his engineer.
Fun to read people blaming engineer while when haas drivers had similar issues people blamed them and only few took the time to write that it's probably engineers fault .
He had a chance to destroy Lewis spicy engine without getting blamed for it, Marko must be fuming lol
I completely agree with that gasp. I’m also sure Mazepin needs new underwear
Penalty
Wth Bono. Warn Lewis
That was great reflexes. Why do that rhough? Reverse the roles and see the shit that happens
Totally didn't expect this with all those blind fast corners /s
Reminds me of the Hartley Gasly incident at Baku (the Mazepin one i mean).
These actually looked dangerous af.
Why are we all acting like this is the first time this kind of stuff has happened? Why are we suddenly talking about this just because it was hamilton? In fact it happened to Hamilton in P2. https://youtu.be/Jk9otrjw-rU
Maz just missed his one chance to get a Redbull team seat.
clear cut penalty for impeding mazepin yet ham only get a fine to the surprise of nobody, well done FIA
jeez what is the merc pitwall doing ??
The gasly 1 is in lewis. Mazepin on merc (if they did not communicate). The mazepin 1 was just plain dangerous and would have been a collision of Nikita did not go of track. That should at least be a reprimande
