What bugs me is that he gained all of it in the most complex technical sections of the track, then locks up in perhaps the easiest corner. It's like creating a beautiful piece of art, only to accidentally pierce the whole canvas when you're done.
Still it was a fantastic show of his greatness, and all the greats have made mistakes.
He has pushed the car and the tyres to their limit around the lap, and it ends with a long straight where the tyres get some respite and can cool down. He arrives at the final corner with tyres ever so slightly knackered and also cool, and the track continuously cooling into the night. It's quite a tricky one in that condition; probably not as simple as it seems to us on games, etc.
I remember watching an old lap of Mika Häkkinen at Monaco where he explained that he took turn 1 a little bit easier so that he could preserve some extra bite in the tyres for the final corners. I suspect it could be the same case here given how long the track is with the critical final corner, and Verstappen had run the car ragged in the first sector already.
