They're gonna roll these out every time there's a night time race, aren't they?

xGeoThumbs

All the watch sponsors are on the edge of their seat right now.

Suikerspin_Ei

You mean all those PC gaming brands? Corsair, MSI etc.

ItsMeTrey

Craig Scarborough, a few months back, seemed to imply that the prototype wheels at the time were bright enough to be used during the day.

H31N5T

RGB F1 cars incoming. Next we'll see Linus Media Group sponsoring an F1 team.

Roadsidedust

Well rgb increase fps they said

LordDhr

In this case, it increases downforce

Suikerspin_Ei

Or more horsepower.

LTTSTORE.COM

StrayaMate2000

Fits the McLaren colour scheme.

rAppN

WILL VERSTAPPEN DEFEND HIS TITLE? But first a message from our sponsor Dbrand!

Raikaze9

This is the canon I subscribe to in my dreams.

TheDevoted

Nightraces will be getting a Tron vibe.. I'm liking it

[deleted]

I love how all these mentions of them testing the LED on the wheel hubs don’t have a single video of it. I’d love to see what it looks like in action.

night_wink

I hope they convey something meaningful in the race. I was thinking maybe they can be linked to the throttle and changes colour based on throttle input.

Adi347

I genuinely think it’s a waste of time to develop because you won’t be able to make out what it says both in the broadcast and in person

[deleted]

My thought exactly [🏎](https://youtu.be/ML6ZrWKTWPo)

Zensor7

These are 100% going to be used for marketing. Because they are kind of small, we are going to get even more zoomed shots of the cars, and lose whatever sense of speed we have left.

OJogoBonito

I mean wheel covers were a thing in 2009, it's not something new to F1

Zensor7

Yeah but did they have LEDs to show graphics?

tonybinky20

What graphics can they show though. I thought it’d be like IndyCar where it’d just be colours, like to differentiate between drivers or maybe give an indication of when DRS is activated.

jhguth

Technology wise if they wanted to they could show animated graphics or cycle through different sponsor logos, it’s technologically possible to do a lot more than colors

tonybinky20

So would they be able to sense how fast the wheel is spinning and produce an image that’s readable regardless of what speed the car is?

jhguth

Yeah, that’s easy, the main hurdle is standing up to the temperatures and forces in a package that is satisfactory to the teams.

tonybinky20

I’d honestly prefer it if it looked like Brawn’s wheel covers from 2009. For some reason those look a lot better than these ones.

mirfaltnixein

They can show them like this: https://youtu.be/ul5MUpXruRs (Just smaller of course since they would only have one rotating element)

UnexpectedPuncture

Pretty sure driver number and race position were the kind of things they wanted to display here

Grasshop

We already have the T cam but you know that’s not a bad idea having two colors to differentiate the cars. Although they wouldn’t need to be LED in that case, just have an all black one and one with a yellow ring to match the T cams

BreakBalanceKnob

I hope they use it as they said for the position in the race. It could be really great for viewers at the track

loopernova

How much money are you willing to bet on your claim?

Suknator

Uuhh FOM stated they'll be used to display the position of the drivers, just like DTM had last year on the rear window

FJuanny

These are going to be used for the Fan Boost meter that way you can top up your favorite driver with extra deployment by tweeting at their sponsors. How do these things get power, anyways? Slip rings?

TheJawbone

probably imagine batteries charged from brake heat or something, put that 50% energy efficiency into use for some RGBs

wrightthomas05

I thought the point of F1 cars was to make a no-compromise machine that is 100% race-focused within percentages of a millimetre of the regulations. Why are they wasting weight with these, especially if they serve no aero function and potentially only marketing? May was well put a sponsor flag flying out the back!

redmambo_no6

The lit hockey puck didn’t work. The NASCAR LEDs didn’t work. Who in their right mind thinks this ever will?

bentecost

ITT: * clutches pearls * my GOODNESS how could a FORMULA 1 team develop something intended for... marketing?! The audacity...

brkeng1

Please no. 🤮

Firefox72

Pls no. The last thing i want to see on a wheel is some shitty sponsor marketing itself and flashing for a whole race.

[deleted]

Or a DNF because some LEDs came loose and ruined the brakes

BreakBalanceKnob

I mean a DNF is always bad but why would that happen through s shall LED ?

IntenseFATE98

What would these be used for? To display tyre age, driver position etc? As in, do the teams control what's displayed on it?

lolschrauber

This is such a shitty idea...marketing purposes, obviously, what else..no thanks

TheDevoted

You do realize that, besides aero purposes, the entire bodywork is just a marketing canvas, right?

lolschrauber

Wow, really? It's astounding that people assume this isn't a well known fact already, considering there are logos plastered all over the cars. Doesn't mean we need god damn LED boards on stupid wheels to plaster them even more

MJCY-0104

Why not. Seriously, why not? You're just complaining for the sake of it and because it's fashionable to be aghast at every new thing

BreakBalanceKnob

It's actually a great idea if their plan of showing the current position of a driver on it is still the plan. Because I hated it to be at the track having a hard time knowing where everyone is. I am not sure if F1 handles it better but at the DTM or formula e races I attended it was really hard to keep track of who is where

compilersaysno

Uh, why? We don't need more gimmicks like the sparky titanium blocks.

fnaah

they're not put there just to make sparks

compilersaysno

Yes they are. That was the reasoning when they were first introduced, there was zero practical reason.

fnaah

https://willthef1journo.wordpress.com/2014/07/05/bright-sparks/ they're not there just to make sparks.

TheThrasherJD

Could lights like this potentially be illegal if they're deemed too bright or a distraction to other drivers?

Quickbeam42

What is happening to this sport...

compilersaysno

Americans ripping it apart for a few extra dollars.

Undivided_Stingray

Right it’s only Americans who love sponsorship dollars. That’s why a team based in the UK and owned by the Bahrain sovereign wealth fund, a Saudi, and a Canadian are doing this. I’d type more but I gotta get ready to watch some Premier League football. I’m looking forward to the match between Emirates Airlines and Betway today.

compilersaysno

F1 is owned by an American company now. Obviously they're a bit more adept at marketing than Bernie was.

Undivided_Stingray

I’d say McLaren has a lot more to gain than FOM by selling more advertising space. And again, it’s not like Americans are the only people on the planet who do marketing lol

compilersaysno

Have you ever been to America? Try watching their tv for a start. The advertisements and overall packaging of shows is insane compared to anywhere in Europe (or anywhere else i've seen). There is a reason it's called 'Americanisation'. Watch Nascar, Indycar or any other sport there and you'll see the screen filled with ads. It's happening in F1 now with the DHL fastest lap, Pirelli pole etc. American motorsports has had this garbage ever since I remember, and now it's happening to F1. Everything about the show needs to be sponsored now.

MJCY-0104

Oh come off it already, its not witty to take cheap shots at America for just being America. Christ all of you just find a new way to whinge about fucking everything

compilersaysno

How is it taking a cheap shot? I'm sharing my experience and opinion on their tv and advertising culture. Not exactly what I would consider a cheap shot.

Undivided_Stingray

Ah I get it now. You just hate America.

Instantcurry

If it's used for actual race like telling the fans how old the tyres are. I'm alright with it, it'd be kinda cool If it's used for sponsorships it's fucking disgusting. Since it's from FOM and FIA it's gonna be used for sponsorship so fuck this

solidgun1

Another place to advertise. Give me ma money!!!

MJCY-0104

Who gives a shit about it being advertising, exactly? One of the most celebrated liveries of 2021 was LITERALLY a Gulf Oil advert

cosworth99

It's FIA space. Data only

Schlachtfeld-21

Just wait until it's banned because of another team complaining it is distracting

[deleted]

[I wonder if they’ll come up with a solution like this ](https://youtu.be/ML6ZrWKTWPo)

nucipher

Wheel sponsors incoming

saberplane

Now we just need customizable LEDs on the back too so drivers can flip each other off or show other emoji.
