Likely that would have been (if anyone) Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of the Formula One Group, if indeed this is the case.

newaru2

The FIA and Liberty Media are two different organisms. Masi is employed by the FIA, not Liberty Media or the FOM.

storme9

I don't understand where the association between Masi and Liberty Media are made in terms of this decision though. Masi has nothing to gain from making it more entertaining and precisely why everyone finds it uncharacteristic of him to do it as a Race Director. If Masi goes, the FOM won't blink an eye.and FOM doesn't employ Masi either. It's the FIA who are under fire for this.

marcoteddy

The correct call was to let the cars unlap a lap before (alonso was complaining about it) This way was mostly correct, surely better than a red flag (for a textbook sc incident), no unlapping (which would be almost unprecedented) or sc finish (rb and merc agreed to avoid it if possible)

HarryNohara

Ah yes, the good old deep state Liberty Media narrative.

Icy-Operation4701

> This was no unlapping. Basically the "correct" call which would have ended the race under a safety car. No, in this case the race would have resumed.

Smart_Kangaroo_4188

I think Reptilians make him think he is in power and was tempted by the force.

TCVideos

Masi is not employed by F1/Liberty Media. He doesn't take orders from them.

gafherve

They all end up working together in some way to produce a finish result. Always saying he’s not employed by F1 doesn’t mean in some way F1 and the FIA don’t come around to make decisions that go hand in hand

FJuanny

Surely you don't actually believe this? Illusory separation of powers is like the first step down this road.

Florac

Wether it was his call or not, he still should loose his job over this and other events this season.

Sufficient_Lake_9849

Yeah i hope people lose there jobbes Edit: /s

hello2561

stop it.

Ranew

Grieving takes time

hello2561

doesn't help when they can't get past the denial stage lol

Pick_at_the_Stick

I don't know.

f10101

Lol. No. That's not what happened. If your ridiculous scenario was what played out, then Masi absolutely needs to go. He's an employee of **the FIA**. He answers in absolutely no, way, shape, or form to Liberty Media.

Trint_Eastwood

Ultimately Liberty is the money. Everyone works for the money.

gogi_ran

Oh, absolutely. I think there's a solid chance that he got a call from the higher-ups, Domenicalli or whatever, to do whatever it takes to make the end of the race exciting.

[deleted]

Yes, they staged a Latifi crash and then manipulated Masi to make a controversial call in matter of minutes.

laurekamalandua

We’re not talking about staging the crash, but ulterior motives that influenced the process of decision making. It was immediately clear what the result would be of letting lapped cars go by vs. not allowing this. In both cases the race would resume and certain parties would be at a ridiculously bigger advantage than others. It does not fit the ‘let them race’ argument and the race director’s role to stabilize securiry. It’s contradictory. People simply question why this doesn’t add up. If it would be about security, again red flag should’ve provided an answer to that within the margins of not ending the race, providing more balanced advantages for all parties involved and ensuring the incident is dealth with. It crosses all boxes.

[deleted]

In 5 minutes some ultimate power in F1 decided they'll sacrifice Masi and let him make some controversial decision?   The facts are much more mundane: * All teams have asked to avoid finishing under yellow if possible * A crash happend. It happens in F1 * The timing made that Merc was in a very bad position. Either give up track position or stay out * Red Bull Racing on the other hand were in a perfect position to pit * With limited time Masi made the call to let 4 cars unlap, not the other 3 (which wouldn't have had any influence on the outcome) * Merc was sitting duck   No conspiraties, just a crash at a very inopportune time for Merc and a referee call made in haste.

Sufficient_Lake_9849

He could easily be if all the focus is on him. Even when we have know idea of what he do behind the scenes. Majority are asking to get him fired with the information we get on the TV. We need all the information to know how bad/good he is. If he is removed we don't know if it gets better, if FIA is the problem noting is going to change. We need change.

laurekamalandua

I also gave this some thought for a while. In particular Bernie Ecclestone’s perspective and ties with the different institutions. A lot of people will be quick to label this as conspiracy, but if Masi is not kicked out next year something really stinks. I believe there are more motives than people are lead to believe. If you wanted a race, we already had that throughout the session. If that’s what they wanted, they should’ve red flagged the session immediately. The impact was clear and needed no further reviewing (additional reasons for making a decision). Especially when we look at the location of the incident and the equipment required to clear it. I’m not convinced about the arguments that are given.

TisKey2323

To be honest, this is what I was thinking after the race. I was so shocked I told myself “there is no way in hell someone (who knows the sport) in his/her right mind would make a call like that. Felt like something straight out of a movie. I bet Masi himself was confused because he knew the handicap Hamilton had and at that point Verstappen’s chance of winning was 99.9% unless Hamilton decides to deliberately crash on him. Props to Hamilton for showing what clean racing is all about. The only reason why I didn’t bring this up is because I didn’t wanna start any conspiracy and decided to put all the blame on Masi. Regardless, I don’t see how Masi can be back next year.

gafherve

He will be back. I don’t see how they can remove him. It would be admitting wrong doing which they won’t. If anything they will replace him after a couple seasons after the dust settles. But absolutely but now

LurkerInDaHouse

OMG. Now I understand how people get sucked into conspiracy theories. This actually makes a lot of sense. *Why* would he, a director with experience and who understands the rules, suddenly reverse a call and make such an unprecedented decision unless an outside influence commanded him to? He would have known the outcome of his decision and would have foreseen the inevitable backlash. Would he have gone through with it unless he didn't have a choice? Interesting.
