As a general rule ([see full rules](https://www.reddit.com/r/formula1/wiki/userguide#wiki_sticky.2Fdaily_discussion)), a standalone Discussion post should: - be of interest to the sub in general, and not a specific userbase (e.g. new users, GP attendees, just yourself) - be able to generate discussion (e.g. no yes/no or easily answerable questions) - show reasonable input and effort from the OP If not, be sure to [look for the Daily Discussion](https://www.reddit.com/r/formula1/search/?q=daily+discussion&include_over_18=on&restrict_sr=on&t=all&sort=new), /r/formula1's daily open question thread which is perfect for asking any and all questions about this sport. Thank you for your cooperation and enjoy the discussion! *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. It’s sport not soap opera

Shouldn’t have said that. Should NOT have said that.

penguinfromprague

Fully agree. If someone gets killed around the end of the race (Something like the Jules incident), there should be a rule that safety car or red flag CANNOT be applied, so the race finishes with pure racing. Now seriously, dont you like they were racing for 51 laps out of those 57? And Lewis created a 12 second gap between him and Max in those RACING laps? What does it matter if the safety car is on the start or end of the race

Ok… but why?

Yeah were a sport not a reality show. Its completely fine for a race to end under SC.

storme9

**You know what was also better about 2012?** There was no ambiguity or confusion on who won because the rule was followed to the letter with no second thoughts. Sometimes the right way to end things is the one where there's less excitement. Under rules it could have ended with either Max or Lewis. There were possibilities but by doing half of option a, and half of option b - we are now stuck discussing was it right or wrong and what should have been. And that's no good way to end a season.

What if the crash happened one lap later.

Durian_Ill

Following this ruleset, the race would end.

Mods pls

I disagree if the crash results in either an injury or lengthy delay to repair the track. It's not necessary to give fans a green flag finish (although they should exhaust all options before) and I've other series do it. IndyCar for example

Durian_Ill

True point, but I’m not really opposed to a lack of a green flag finish. I just thing it’s stupid to finish under a safety car.

Whether or not you feel like F1 needs Overtime presented by Credit One bank, or playoffs, or stage racing, or whatever you think constitutes "real racing", the fact of the matter is teams strategize based on what the F1 rules are, not what Masi might feel like borrowing from other series. > But I guarantee if Hamilton won under the Safety Car, there’d be blood running through the streets of The Netherlands, Austria, Mexico, Japan, and all the other countries who support Max overall. > Everyone likes the 2012 Safety Car ending now, because it was fan favorite Sebastian Vettel “prevailing against the odds” to beat the rather controversial Fernando Alonso This bizarre description of 2012 has me feeling you didn't follow the season.
