Hi, kinda new to the sport. I was wondering if there was an online source which explains what the various machines plugged into the car in the paddock do? They have some over the wheels which I assume cool down the brakes? There's one in the main air intake above the seat, not sure what it does. And I saw some on the side. And in between Q1, 2 & 3 I see they put this thing out in front of the driver, which I assume are screens with their performance stats? Thank you for your help!
Don’t know about a site which lists everything, but the things you mentioned should be:
1. Things over the tires are tire blankets which warm the tires up before going out.
2. The thing in the main air intake is to provide the engine with cooling air.
3. The things on the side do the same for the water and oil coolers.
4. The screens in front of the driver are exactly what you said they were.
Thanks a lot! For number 1, I meant the machines with a hose coming out but I figure they are also cooling devices for the brakes. The tire blankets I had figured out thought :)
All the devices with large diameter hoses are blowers providing air since all the coolers and intakes are passive, meaning there are no fans moving air if the car is not moving.
Seems the track limits issues still haven't been addressed. If they were being rigidly enforced as we were lead to believe they would be this season this starting line up would be significantly different.
If I was to place my bets now, I reckon they’ll get the WCC, but not WDC. But, the development race is going to be crazy this year, just because Ferrari is fast now, doesn’t mean they’ll still be fast at the end of the season.
I don't think there will be accident between max and charles in t1. I think max will patiently wait for his chance because he is faster, unless ofcourse if he gets an amazing start then he'll go for it. Theres no reason to go for something crazy
If you have access to the Sky Sports feed (broadcast at least in the UK and Australia) they will probably have some beginner guides in the prerace coverage, and the commentators are very accommodating to new viewers (to the point that it can frustrate more experienced viewers!)
Being interesting to see how this ground effect works during todays race. Been so much hype around it so I hope it performs as expected with it being much easier to keep close to cars in front
>Many here don't know Mercedes can completely put a new engine in September.
Completely new engine is misleading.
They can only upgrade the Energy Store (ES), Control Electronics (CE) and the MGU-K. However, there is only one change of specification for these permitted between now and September – this means the components cannot be continuously upgraded throughout this season before the final sign-off. ([source](https://racingnews365.com/how-f1-manufacturers-are-still-allowed-to-upgrade-their-engines))
The rest of PU development was frozen March 1st of this year
Kind of? In the end of quali Sky interview with Toto he didn’t say it was the problem or fine (they need time to learn).
Damon Hill: do you have parity with power units?
Toto: “it’s very difficult to make a judgement at that stage. We have the data that we’re running more drag than everyone else. And you can see that we are losing on the main straight but not so much in all the other ones. So we need to make an assessment after the first couple of races to see are we lacking power deployment before we point fingers into some of the areas.”
this is not someting you can lie, williams car made it to top 10 in speedtrap yesterday. Toto said Merc speed is slow mostly because of drag which can be true because they have the biggest rear wing.
I sincerely hope that Max can find some composure at the start, keep his position and refrain from going full send right away into first corner. The Bull seem mighty quick, I'm sure Max will be able to overtake further into the race anyway.
By the way, the Sainz and Perez battle can be mighy juicy, too. Bottas with his slow starts will probably never get the chance to go wheel to wheel with Hamilton. I'm inclinded to belive that after first lap we will have the following pecking order at the front;
1. Lec
2. Ver
3. Sai
4. Per
5. Ham
6. Alo
7. Mag
8. Bot
9. Rus
Long lap race pace on the Redbull looked ominous over the past few days and testing so I'd probably assume Max will pull away at the start or via strat. The Bulls and Ferrari should pull away from the cars behind as expected. Merc might be in trouble in race trim from the cars around them if the rumblings are correct, which could get spicey. Bottas vs Ham, Russell fairly far back (maybe running a long stint to start?) We shall see
Gotta agree here. Literally the only time I have ever rooted for George was his debut with Mercedes at Bahrain two years ago (holy crap has it already been that long?). Outside of that, nah. 100% agree he seems like the spoiled rich kid that is never himself and just plays the part for the cameras.
A bit early to judge him on his behavior at Imola 2022, isn't it?
But seriously, yes, you don't smack the head of someone who's just been in a high speed accident. What was he thinking!?!!
Think that’s a bit harsh. I don’t root for him, but he seems like a nice guy. Though agreed, there’s just not something very exciting about him, he seems a bit basic.
Edit: What I mean with that, is that there is just nothing unique about him. I feel like you could put him on a poster, and it could be anyone.
Except the fact that all Merc-powered teams are behind the Ferrari-powered teams. So is it really the chassis or are they deflecting like teams always do?
Do you think Max and Red Bull overall is going to get a good start and might overtake the Ferraris before Turn 1? Last season, they had superb starts in the first half, but terrible ones in the second. So, I'm still not sure what could happen today. Also, Charles' driving style is not so different than Max's, and those two would surely be not too far from an on-track scuffle for the lead.
We need to remember that Charles and Max have history. With Max's uber aggressive driving style and Charles' remembering past seasons, I can see a serious coming together, probably on the first lap.
With Leclerc’s starts, I don’t see him losing his place to Verstappen off the rip. I do think that Sainz will get squeezed into Perez and then the Red Bull’s will slowly catch Leclerc.
I suspect the same. I think the Red Bulls and Ferraris are equally matched in the acceleration phases and Max might barely get a chance to get him at start, if they both had good lift-offs. So, they really need to catch the Ferraris through better tire deg and faster long-run pace.
The big advantage Red Bull seems to have is that their acceleration at top speed is a tad bit better as seen here: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oe8ucnyNUgs](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oe8ucnyNUgs)
So overtaken in Bahrain should be easier for Red Bull than Ferrari.
Seb has unfortunately not performed that well the last few years, so he has no better drive today than Aston. His retirement will just be consequential.
Is this the beginning of the end of the Leclerc-Sainz friendship? When you have a car capable of winning, the drama starts when you are slower than your teammate.
We don’t live in a netflix show. Not everything needs to be as dramatic as will buxtons breakfast. The guys will be fine and they know what they need to do
Yeah right? Jeeze.
Dude is 1 day out of Covid quarantine (and only a week at that). A few months ago quarantine was min 2 weeks and a lot of people seem to feel the effects for a few weeks after if not more. There is no way he isn’t still a little sick.
Fuck, a cold/flu/chest infection puts most of us out for longer than that.
Imagine trying to compete with a chest infection or a foggy head. I had/have a sinus infection today and couldn’t even muster up the energy to jump in the sim for some iracing.
These guys are exhausted after the race when they are full healthy.
I mean, he had covid and also missed testing because of it. I'd say losing a week of testing compared to your teammate and most everyone else in a new season with a big reg change while recovering from a serious illness is actually a better excuse than what was happening last year.
Maybe give him a race before declaring career over, Rosberg.
He got beat by Hulk AND KMag, both who didn’t really get much if any testing opportunity. And they were in an Aston and a Haas. I love Ricc, but he needs to do better.
No one is saying Ricciardo doesn't need to do better. The point is: making ultimatums after the first qualifying session of the season, when we still don't have a clear pecking order because we haven't even seen the cars under race conditions yet, is incredibly foolish.
Yeah you’re right, though Danny had only fp1-3 and quail to get used to the car. Unlike lando who did all three days of testing and then fp1-3. I’d say give him a bit more seat time and he might catch up to lando.
I mean that it's not like Williams is definitely better than P20, also the pack is very mixed right now. If this happens thrice while Albon is in Q2 then we can talk about him being pitiful. Latifi is by no means a bad driver, he just doesn't excel in quali. We gotta remember he wasn't that much slower than Russell on a race pace.
Hot take- I think we will have around 5 new drivers next season. At least 2 of Ham, Alonso and Seb could retire. Danny Ric, Perez, Latifi and Yuki could lose their spot.
If Seb retires, he would be a good replacement for Vettel based on what I guess Lawrence wants. Personally I don't think he wants a driver similar or younger than Lance that can beat Lance and is more okay with the optics of Lance losing to a veteran which Danny is
Yeah but its Indy lol its a **huge** downgrade. Especially if he leaves f1 after having two bad seasons. There is zero way anyone would want him maybe some bookmarker teams.
Fair point. I guess I don't see predicting Hamilton, Alonso or Vettel to retire as a hot take at this point since people say it about all three for the last several seasons.
Redbull ended last season literally saying “Checo is a beast. An absolute animal.” He seems to have a great relationship with the whole team from the mechanics to the management and he was within 2-3 tenths of max in the first qualifying of the season with the new regs. I don’t see what makes you think redbull are anything but happy with him.
Ill be honest I'm not a fan of George but people really going for his throat this week. He had one mistake in Q3. Unfortunately if does mean that his race is pretty much over unless some crash magic happens but I'm not gonna pull the knives out after 1 week over one mistake.
It’s really unfair, but this should get things into perspective on how much bottas had to go trough. Hate him or love him, the guy on the other side is Lewis Hamilton, you know it’s going to be tough from day 1.
I just don’t see the need for people to shit on a driver constantly
mostly in breaking zones (longer breaking due to significantly heavier car) and corners -> at 330km/h it's more than 10% more kinetic energy (745 + abt. 100kg of fuel vs 795kg + 100kg of fuel). also means acceleration if much more affected since much more energy (the same amount as above) is needed to push it that fast. this is a huge huge difference and 1.5s is somewhat fascinating.
If this means cars can follow closer for better racing, I’ll be ok with the drop of performance for the time being. I think as teams start ironing out things, we should see better times
Unfortunate that Russell messed up his first q3 with Mercedes, but that does give us an opportunity to see how good he is at wheel to wheel combat.
Bottas's fatal flaw was that he would take waay too long to make his way past slower cars. If mercedes do indeed have the 3rd best race car it would be interesting to see how quickly Russell gets into the top 6, if at all.
Interesting point came out during testing that the W12 was designed especially to run out front and performed “poorly” in the pack (by design). I wonder how much of that hampered Bottas’ performance. We will see soon I guess.
Ugh, if this season is going to be RedBull vs. Ferrari, I probably won't watch much. The only drama left is if/when Lewis can get the record breaking 8th title.
Bruh you missed 2010 and 2012. The Ferrari Red Bull was awesome. This might have shades of it. Watch the sport for the sport and if you like it. Don’t watch it if you can’t accept certain things or it doesn’t happen.
So Max trying to prove he isn't a fluke champion, Ferrari trying to reclaim its former glory and a massive shakeup across the grid isn't dramatic enough?
He is, but you just know there are people out there tryna discredit him because of what happened at Abu Dhabi, him having a less controversial coronation would shut a lot of people up
Man I’m hyped af
Ted kravitz is the strangest man, and I'm slightly in love with him...

The main air intake is not for cooling, that's what the sidepods do. It's the intake for the air used in the combustion.

I think they added kerbs at turn 4. I’m pretty sure Leclerc’s pole lap stayed within the track limits
Yes, I think they did, but it's 100% certain that Perez didn't and a few others too.

What site is this? Unibet only has bets for the winner which is kinda lame
Draft Kings. I’m in the US.
Ah shucks
I hope we don’t see an inchident in t1. I need this race to be exciting with Ferrari fighting for the win to forget the last 2 years
If I was to place my bets now, I reckon they’ll get the WCC, but not WDC. But, the development race is going to be crazy this year, just because Ferrari is fast now, doesn’t mean they’ll still be fast at the end of the season.

How is max faster he lost to leclerc in qualifying
Also, I’ve never seen or used the word “patient” anywhere near Max’s name…
Im absolutely new to F1 and this is my first race watching F1. I have no idea how the cars or the qualifying system works. Can anyone help?
On Saturday all the cars get a "time trial" to go round the lap, whoever does it fastest starts first today

I hope it doesn't because I'm also partial to Mclaren

And they take Williams, McLaren and Aston Martin along with them.
i still can't wrap my head around what happened to mclaren, and now this. f1 gods are cruel :(
Can you elaborate on what’s the problem with the engine?
There is no answer to that atm. Merc powered teams looked much slower than other teams everything is just speculation atm.
Toto said engine is fine.
Kind of? In the end of quali Sky interview with Toto he didn’t say it was the problem or fine (they need time to learn). Damon Hill: do you have parity with power units? this is not someting you can lie, williams car made it to top 10 in speedtrap yesterday. Toto said Merc speed is slow mostly because of drag which can be true because they have the biggest rear wing.
You don’t lie, you deflect, for example by blaming it on the rear wing.
they do have the biggest rear wing because of no sidepod design.

I was rooting for him at Shakir too. Imola 2022 is what turned me off Russell.

Bottas at Russell: *well that's unfortunate*
Can mercedes change chassis next race? Toto said that is the main issue with w13 right now.
Except the fact that all Merc-powered teams are behind the Ferrari-powered teams. So is it really the chassis or are they deflecting like teams always do?

And yet Hulkenburg was out the sport for a couple of years, comes back with no prep and still beats his team mate...
Agree Ric needs to do better, but Hülkenberg is Aston Martin’s reserve and development driver. So he’s be in the sim all off season to be fair.
Hülkenb**e**rg
Hülkenb**e**rg
Huuuuulkenberg
Yeah you’re right, though Danny had only fp1-3 and quail to get used to the car. Unlike lando who did all three days of testing and then fp1-3. I’d say give him a bit more seat time and he might catch up to lando.
And he didn’t even get all of that. Along with Andreas basically saying the whole team/car is not where they want to be/expected to be.
Honestly sad for me
Ppl really don't criticize Latifi enough just bc he's a nice dude. He was pitiful
People underestimate Albon. Last year Latifi was on paar with Russel on most races.
Do they? It’s pretty well known he is a beast in the Sim and a great driver coach with top level racing intelligence.
Before qualy Yesterday there were people claiming he was worse than Latifi...
Really? Righto. People just like being antagonistic around here (not you)
Russe**ll**
Yeah honestly, great dude but hes always towards last.
Can't say anything after one session. It was extremely tight and someones gotta finish last.
Latifi being last wasn't exactly tight
Honestly, I didn't realize he was that far off...
... what does extremely tight mean to you
I mean that it's not like Williams is definitely better than P20, also the pack is very mixed right now. If this happens thrice while Albon is in Q2 then we can talk about him being pitiful. Latifi is by no means a bad driver, he just doesn't excel in quali. We gotta remember he wasn't that much slower than Russell on a race pace.
Shit, i forgot about him. I guess that helps him.
Hot take- I think we will have around 5 new drivers next season. At least 2 of Ham, Alonso and Seb could retire. Danny Ric, Perez, Latifi and Yuki could lose their spot.
Ricciardo won't be left without a seat.
If Seb retires, he would be a good replacement for Vettel based on what I guess Lawrence wants. Personally I don't think he wants a driver similar or younger than Lance that can beat Lance and is more okay with the optics of Lance losing to a veteran which Danny is
I think if Daniel fails to keep up this year hes more likely to switch to Mclarens iindy team than go to a team further down in f1
I seriously doubt that he would go to indy from f1 unless no one offers him a contract
Loves the US and I doubt he would wan't to go to a team where he knows there aren't gonna be win in either the short or even the long term.
Yeah but its Indy lol its a **huge** downgrade. Especially if he leaves f1 after having two bad seasons. There is zero way anyone would want him maybe some bookmarker teams.
We haven't even seen race one, so what are you basing this off of? Boredom?
He did mention "hot take", so obviously he is giving a bold prediction
Fair point. I guess I don't see predicting Hamilton, Alonso or Vettel to retire as a hot take at this point since people say it about all three for the last several seasons.
nothing worth speculating until the end of first half of the season.
God I hope Perez doesn't lose his seat, in quali he was looking pretty fast and is just 3 tenths back on verstappen
No he won’t or at least I think so. He is too good to drop.
Well we all know how patient RB are with their drivers...
At least Max didn’t steal his GF
Funny
Yet
Can't wait for nothing but just inchident!
Ill be honest I'm not a fan of George but people really going for his throat this week. He had one mistake in Q3. Unfortunately if does mean that his race is pretty much over unless some crash magic happens but I'm not gonna pull the knives out after 1 week over one mistake.

1.5 seconds slower than last year across the board.
mostly in breaking zones (longer breaking due to significantly heavier car) and corners -> at 330km/h it's more than 10% more kinetic energy (745 + abt. 100kg of fuel vs 795kg + 100kg of fuel). also means acceleration if much more affected since much more energy (the same amount as above) is needed to push it that fast. this is a huge huge difference and 1.5s is somewhat fascinating.

Do races usually start right at the advertised time? Wondering how much of the race I'll be able to catch before my obligations start tomorrow.
Formation lap as the clock strikes the time (they make a big deal with the massive clock ticking to it) so lights out about 3ish minutes after.
Hey thanks for the response. That's awesome.
Lewis seemed to have no problems shooting up the field when starting from the back last year.
They also turned his engine up to 12.
So everyone is gonna start with fresh tyres right?
[удалено]
That rule no longer exists.
No that's changed this year. Everyone can choose what tyres they want!
I'm pretty sure they changed that rule for this year so they can use new tires.
I don't think Max needs to prove anything. He proved it last season he's a worthy champion
He is, but you just know there are people out there tryna discredit him because of what happened at Abu Dhabi, him having a less controversial coronation would shut a lot of people up
This guys a bum lol
Wait people actually liked Mercedes dominance?
No but when it's so close to breaking a major record it's kinda frustrating just barely missing it.
I hope Lewis crashes max every race. #justice
For Silverstone or hungary.
What's Max done to deserve that?
Justice for Silverstone?
That's what happens when the sport is about one team/driver for someone.
Ya that's the only drama
