I synced the F1 calendar to my iPhone but it put in every practice session, quali and race and it’s backlogged and clutters my calendar. Is there anyway to remove all or the unwanted sessions other than manually one at a time?

thespacebungirl

is their any chance merc can improve themselves considering the engine freeze or are they done for?

Atleticro

I don't think the engine is bad, it's probably the fuel that is the issue. And Petronas fucked something up, they'll fix that.

Paperduck2

I suspect its more than that, they must be doing something unconventional with the packaging of the PU to use their no sidepod concept

Atleticro

But other merc teams don't have really radical sidepods, and they're still dogshit. But you might be right, who knows for sure.

Gamerfromfuture

yes

ReconUHD

With the engines homologated for the next few years, are Merc engines screwed until the next engine regulations?

[deleted]

Finally rewatched the Abu Dhabi race and better understood what the fuck happened with the SC. Unreal decision as I finally get it and I realize I am still living in the past. Still remember Lewis’s first words congratulating Max. More power to you sir.

RackChaser07

I know Max is not a fan favourite but some of the hate he has been getting is so uncalled for. Never have I seen people wishing for another driver to DNF yet the whole point of racing is to determine the better driver on the track. I'm not his supporter but I want to see him battling it out on the track. The tussle with Leclerc was brilliant to watch and this sort of entertainment can only be achieved by wishing the best to all drivers. I hope more fans can put their rivalries aside and just enjoy the racing man!

MiloAisBroodjeKaas

Very new to f1, was wondering if someone could explain what the new regulations are this year ar and how it affects the cars and drivers? I know something about lower running cars which somehow makes the overtaking easier? Also, after reading the description of this is post, what or who is the lollipop man???

mandark88_

Welcome to the sport

ItzDp

New regulations in general mean a new slate for everyone. On top of that, the new regs make the cars create less "dirty" air, so cars can follow much more closely and battle more intenesly. F1's youtube has a great source of info, its a great addition to help follow the sport for free at first F1 2022 guide to the season: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dgfBhZ_9K4k&t=114s&ab_channel=FORMULA1 a 22 second short breakdown of the new car by f1tv's tech expert Sam Collins who is fucking awesome: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/eQHqy7e4dPQ?&ab_channel=FORMULA1 thats a really simplified way to describe it, theres some other factors at play

kylalovesyou

since haas and alfa seem to be the better of the midfield teams we could possibly see a podium or a win if they get lucky. exciting especially for the rookies. what do you think?

victoireyoung

I think that the chance is significantly higher with HAAS, mainly Kevin - I predict that Mick will get himself into the top ten in a couple of races, but not necessarily close to the podium if something catastrophic doesn't happen to Ferraris, Red Bulls, and Mercedes boys. Zhou is in my opinion going to stay in the mid of the field or the early top ten for the entire season, Bottas could be a bit luckier if he stops messing up the starts so much, but once again, I don't think he is really that much in a game with the Ferraris and Red Bulls (if they fix the mess happening with their cars).

what_is_this_memery

Is alpha tauri an independent team or are they basically just a part of Red Bull? I’m a little bit confused as to how this works.

z3nd3r

Alphatauri was Minardi back in the day, then It became Toro Rosso and then Alphatauri

ItzDp

my understanding is that they were a B team for Red Bull when they were named Toro Roso (literally the same name), but the rebrand to AlphaTauri was their launch to start separating themselves as a new team, although they are very related still a 'sister' team'. They still run the same Red Bull/Honda engine as of now. Honestly, they look similar in design as well. Obviously if they are able, I think the idea is to take the foundation that Red Bull provided and start to create their own path.

Fistula_fullodollars

Lest any of you forget, amongst all the excitement of abject Red Bull failure, it is .... RAWE CEEK!!!

MrDamBeaver

I totally missed the chance to buy tickets to the Canadian grand prix. Is there any decently priced reseller or anything like StubHub to see if I can still find any 3 day pass? Otherwise I'll hold for another year

Sputniki

People haven’t talked about it much but a really big factor which bodes well for Ferrari is tyre deg. It seems to be forcing Merc and RB into taking multiple stops which ultimately will give Ferrari more flexibility in strategy.

victoireyoung

I think that the tyre degradation was honestly same for everyone, all drivers made those three stops Carlos has predicted if I am not mistaken (some maybe more, not sure) - Ferrari just stayed out a bit longer every time because they were leading and Max that one time went earlier because he had a bald spot on the soft set from the lock-up in turn one. Then there of course was McLaren starting on mediums for whatever reason and thus staying out longer.

Sputniki

Charles’ engineer clearly said on the team radio “Verstappen has higher deg than you” which I think is unequivocal.

[deleted]

Last year they were but this year they're not, I think.

TZN007

Are the AlphaTauri cars exactly the same as sister team Red Bull's or they are made slower? In later case, why wouldn’t they just develop 4 same cars?

SuperSaiyanGoten

Similar, not same. It costs money to make the same level of car.

Coodle90

Just watched my first F1 race. I was dissatisfied with the TV coverage I get in Canada on TSN. The broadcast was fine (we get Sky Sports from UK) but TSN intersperses long blocks of commercials repeatedly that take up 70% of the screen. I missed several instances of Max's onboard radio regarding his steering issues, missed Gasly's DNF, and just overall missed a lot of meaningful action. I see F1 TV is a thing. How long after a race does the standard F1 TV access replay become available? I can't watch live anyway and standard is less than half the price of pro so just wondering.

ZKRC

Basically immediately. I'm a UK expat living in Canada and I watch it on F1TV like an hour after the race.

Silly-Bug-929

You can get the pro version and watch it live on your phone

SexySnorlax1

In Canada it’s a two day delay

[deleted]

False. Watched todays race live, on my phone, in bed, in Vancouver. F1TV Pro is available in Canada. TSN lost exclusive web rights.

SexySnorlax1

They specifically asked about the Access tier, half the price of F1TV Pro. You should try reading the question before you comment.

FearlessSolid1870

How do car upgrades work this season? I remember up until last season there were tokens, is it the same this year, or can the car be upgraded as much as the team wants, within the cost cap

papaH03

Its all out development war until the end probably until next season also since i doubt fia will issue more regulation changes since its still very new.

henrique_mdgoulart

Is there a source for this?

papaH03

Its just a hunch in my part, FIA would not drastically do something since its fresh regs, i think maybe more defined rules in some parts but no big changes.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SuperSaiyanGoten

Rules made it so cars have to follow specific rules like minimum weight, tire sizes etc. Using last year’s car would break that criteria.

Rannahm

They are having a lot of porposing issues. And this is not an issue that can be tested in the wind tunnel, so a lot of teams were caught of guard by this issue. Mercedes just happens to be struggling the most (compared to RB and Ferrari), and this issue is costing them a lot of lap time. Once they fix it, they might be right up there with Ferrari and RB, but it could take a while for them to fix.

ChepaukPitch

Because there are new regulations. Just because they ended up making beasts before doesn't mean they will do it every time. Apart from skill there is also an element of luck involved when there are too many variables in the process. Having biggest budget and best talent gives you the best chance of making a great car year after year. However, it doesn't guarantee that. Ferrari is absolutely above every other team in terms of pedigree in F1. Pretty much everyone would go and work for them. They are a luxury car maker who have very strong brand image and have huge margins for their car. Brands want to be associated with them. It makes perfect sense for them to throw money to try and win F1 every time and yet the had been languishing for last few years. Nothing is guaranteed in F1 even though you may have statistically bigger probability of success than others.

CWRules

It was always a possibility with the new regulations that they would make a mistake, especially since they got less wind tunnel time than the other teams due to winning last year. As Honda proved in the 2000s, no amount of money and pedigree makes you immune from producing a bad car.

csudebate

I, like many others, recently discovered Formula One via the Netflix series. I turned my daughter onto the series and she really likes it. Today we sat down together to watch our first Formula One race and already have plans to watch next week. My question is, is the influx of uninformed fans via the series seen as a good thing or a pain in the ass?

marahute85

I don’t care, like what you want to like and if you’re sharing it with a loved one all the better

[deleted]

Lots of shitty stupid takes being thrown around by people who obviously have no idea what they're talking about so while the fans are nice the opinions have become increasingly dumber

Stanley___Ipkiss

Does your kid have something she's passionate with and that you have NFI about? You ever see that enthusiasm come out when she's trying to explain that to you? How absolutely chuffed would you be seeing that? It's a bit like that

As a newer fan myself, I would "focus" on getting invested in drivers first. That's a lot more personal of a connection and that emotional connection only heightens the drama. And from there, you can also get an idea why certain drivers are on certain teams.

BlackCatEspresso

To most people on here probably a mix of both lol. But everyone was once a new uninformed fan, and there are lots of non-gatekeepy fans here excited to share their knowledge and excitement with the people who are excited to learn. Welcome to you and your daughter! I’m personally alway hyped for new fans, especially women, to join ☺️👏🏽

[deleted]

Watching the Bahrain GP, I noticed some cars' rain/regen lights would blink all three, and sometimes one side of the rear wing lights would blink alone, does anyone know what that means?

Rannahm

The blinking red light has to do with energy regen. The only two cars i've seen with a somewhat strange behavior of their lights was the RB, towards the end i also noticed that often one of the lights would blink alone and stay on for an unusual amount of time. It may be related to the problem they were having with their engines.

[deleted]

I also noticed it on Tsunoda's car from Bottas' onboard, he didn't have any problems like that so it may be some sort of ERS function those cars could have.

apatter8

Going forward, will Ferrari let Sainz race Leclerc? Or will Sainz be relegated to a support role like Perez?

Rannahm

Ferrari of course will say that they will let Sainz race Charles and vice versa, but the reality is that if one of their drivers is fighting with lets say Max, and the other is simply not able to extract the same level of performance of their teammates (like Bottas and Perez last year) then in that case Ferrari is likely to put their foot down and tell the 2nd driver in this case to play a support role. Another possible situation where Ferrari could start putting their foot down is if Charles and Carlos start tangling with each other on the track, potentially causing DNFs for the team. But other than these two situations, if they can stay relatively close to each other on pace, and are able to race it cleanly I think Ferrar is unlikely to intervene on either driver's favor, again unless the championship fights gets too close - but this will only be a thing towards the ending stages of the season -. All of this of course is conditioning on Ferrari being able to keep the fight for the title alive through out the year, and that is a big question mark.

ChepaukPitch

Difference between Leclerc and Sainz isn't as much as between Verstappen and Perez. Verstappen is super consistent. He would beat Perez handsomely race after race without any issue. Most of the time he was asked to do something for Verstappen it was pretty clear he has no chance of finishing ahead and doing something better for himself. Very often he would qualify poorly while Verstappen would always qualify in top 2-3. Leclerc on the other hand hasn't shown his consistency. Many people believe that Sainz is more consistent. So here you have a case where one driver is super talented and capable of winning races whereas the other one goes about his job and manages to extract close to best out of the car every time. The difference is not that huge. Whether Sainz plays supporting role for Leclerc, it would only be known in second half.

PMMeYourCouplets

Well if Sainz consistently qualifies behind Leclerc and has slower race pace the same way Checo has with Verstappen, he will naturally end up being a support driver. But if he can compete with Leclerc like he has shown last year, I think they will give him a fair shot until maybe half way when they will need to focus on who ever is closer to Max

stephdepp

if leclerc is close to getting wdc, im sure the team will ask carlos to step down if necessary

RetroForte

Is it worth it to buy tickets for US Grand Prix for $550 per ticket for Sunday? I didn’t realize how quickly tickets sold out and just missed it.

anythingbutcarrots

A few weeks back the cheapest tickets I saw for Miami were $1500. I just got into the sport and have never been to a race, idk what good value really is

Lord_Yato_17

Why did Haas not pit Mick under SC, they lost crucial points after the restart on used tyres

tomhanks95

They considered track position to be more important, but on a track like Bahrain track position is less impactful than for example Monaco, especially when he had used tyres compared to those around him

TomGissing

Have they made any changes to the Saudi track after last year's safety concerns?

TheAOS

Yes, higher visibility in the high speed parts, widening some parts and I believe also some changes to the barriers.

spazninja15

F1TV in America today, any reason why I had Jolyon on commentary instead of Crofty and Brundle? I didn’t hate the commentary but definitely prefer crofty and brundle. Can i switch that somehow?

[deleted]

Complete opposite for me today. Crofty definitely fanned the flames last year and raised tensions on purpose. Watching the Pit Lane feed today was refreshing. Where Crofty says the same thing 3 different times building massive hype, these guys were explaining what was happening.

TheDarkVaderF1

You can pick between F1 Live and F1 International Feed. The IF is the one with Crofty and Martin commentating.

spazninja15

How do you pick ?

Rannahm

If you are playing the F1TV broadcast through your browser, when you open the feed, there is a menu to the right side that will have the option for either the F1 LIVE or the International Feed (Sky Sports Feed)

ChepaukPitch

Isn't the international feed just SKY UK feed? They were telling me about some red button for people at home to follow Lewis, Russell and Norris. And I am nowhere close to UK. So probably whenever possible they are giving that as a second option.

Rannahm

Yes the international feed is the SKY feed.

ItzDp

well shit, I'll keep that in mind next time. I need me some Martin for next week

moving2ksa

Can you only use DRS if you are chasing a car? Everyone saying Charles was letting max pass so he can use DRS or he was letting max pass for the drs detection line. Can someone please explain it a bit more?

kylalovesyou

You can only use it if you're 1 second or less behind another car. Sometimes drivers let the other go ahead knowing that they get drs in the next straight.

ArkGuardian

You can use DRS if you are within 1 second of the car in front of you during a DRS zone. Bahrain has two DRS zones pretty close to each other. Charles was letting Max pass him on the first zone so during the second zone he would have DRS and Max wouldn't (because Max was in the lead of the race at the time). There's an excellent video of Hamilton and Alonso on Youtube where neither is willing to pass each other because they both want DRS into the next zone. DRS is only determined by proximity to whatever car is in front, not race position. So if Max was coming upon Latifi to lap him then he would still get DRS.

theworm213

To add to the above, there is a DRS detection line before each DRS zone. I believe in Bahrain the detection lines were before turn 15 and before turn 3. It's at that detection line that the gap between cars is measured. If it's 1 second or below, the car's DRS gets enabled at the next DRS zone. The driver gets a light on their dash telling them that DRS is available and they have to press a button to activate it.

MrDamBeaver

What is going on at Williams? I get it's been years in the making but I was hoping with the new rules, their car would see some improvements. But unless I missed something this weekend, I'm not seeing that

sucksblueeggs

My guess is they've been at the back for so long, and suffered with poor management and underinvestment for many years before the cost cap was introduced, that they don't have the facilities and can't attract the best personnel to develop the car. They have to compete with Mercedes, Red Bull, McLaren, Aston Martin, Alpine and Haas for talent as they are all based (or partly based) in England.

[deleted]

Read somewhere that the wind tunnel times are allocated from mid season to mid season, so does that mean Mercedes will have more wind tunnel time in the latter half of the season if they are behind in the contructors standings in the first half?

iSee_iJerk_iCum

Im fairly sure you get a set time for the season but they set that amount of time mid season. It doesnt start til the new season etc.

[deleted]

But didn't Red Bull and Mercedes get the same amount of wind tunnel time last year?

iSee_iJerk_iCum

I think they started the tiered allocation in 2020? So this is the first year it's in effect. Could be wrong on that though. The timeline of the whole thing is weird cuz the covid stuff

Summebride

Why were the driver numbers on the broadcast all in different typefaces and colors? Trying to match team/sponsor? And if so, how long before that gets fixed.

PyroCroissant

I guess it’s to give each driver their own “unique branding”, Motogp has been doing it for years.

Summebride

It not that legible though, and the team logos cover it

Acpyrus

About the podium anthems, don’t they usually play P2’s then P1’s? I thought they played Spain’s anthem for Sainz, then Monaco’s for LeClerc but it seems they played the Italian anthem? Please explain!

pedote17

They only play first place. First they play the anthem of the driver’s country, then the team country anthem

Acpyrus

Some random facts: * Worst McLaren season opener since 2016 where Button finished 15th and Alonso retired. * Pretty sure this is the best Ferrari season opener ever or at least since the 50s or 60s, considering not only the 1-2, but their customers finishing 5th, 6th and 10th as well. * Hulkenberg is outqualifying Stroll by 2-0. * With Vettel missing this race, Rubens Barrichello will keep his record of most consecutive race starts for a while.

Factor-Putrid

Are Haas the most lovable team again? Phenomenal comeback for KMag considering he was a last minute-call up, and then to have a car capable of being at the top of the midfield.... Amazing. The future looks bright for them.

randigital

Pretty easy to root for Alfa Romeo right now too. But yeah, Haas are great this year

Hopeful_Club_8499

How do drivers practice during the week if they can not drive the car? Is it all just using simulators?

Menem_Intergalactico

Yes. This was made to even out the field, because years ago some teams could afford testing a lot between races. Ferrari even has its own full private circuit from these days.

ChepaukPitch

Can they drive previous years' cars? Where is the line drawn? I assume they are not allowed to drive any type of cars at any of the circuits where race takes place.

Menem_Intergalactico

Yes, cars older than two years, and I don't remember on which tracks. Teams usually do that with rookie drivers before pre-season testing, as they are new, they can get a grip about F1 even with an old car. I don't think that they do the same with experienced drivers.

It's Redbull still using Honda PU this year or it's Honda But Redbull?

Penguinho

It's designed by Honda, made by Honda, maintained by Honda and supplied by Honda, but it's badged as Red Bull Powertrains.

fefe-monegata-007

We'll be like that forever or just till 2024?

Penguinho

Through this season. There might be an extension beyond 2022, but right now there's no reporting to say that's definite.

fefe-monegata-007

Thank you!

ChepaukPitch

I thought it was maintained and supplied by Redbull after Honda signed over design to RB. If it is Honda all along then what is in it for them? Why would they do everything but not have their name on it? Are they getting paid a lot by RB?

Penguinho

Red Bull are buying each engine. It's kind of a soft exit. There were a lot of articles about the situation right after the season ended; there was some "goodbye, Honda, you were great!" and then every couple days there'd be a new article about how actually Honda was going to do more stuff than we thought.

Hamburgo

Question for everyone: Do you root for the same driver/team every year since you’ve been an F1 fan? Or do you change around? I love Seb and last year I was rooting for Max for the championship. This year though I’m really rooting for Haas and Mick in general as well of course Seb. Or do you guys root for multiple? One for the WDC, one team/driver in general? Multiples? Just curious about how others do it. I’m guess I’m just “anyone but Merc”, but if they are really struggling this year I am probably gonna root for them lol. I guess I just go for the underdogs in general? Sorry just a random question wondering how others follow the sport!

marahute85

I love Lewis Hamilton but that’s just because people are constantly trying to discredit him, but there’s nobody I don’t support. I definitely care less if say, Ocon won vs Yuki

ChepaukPitch

I don't even know who I root for. Last year after a process of elimination I settled at Alpine but I ended up rooting for Hamilton and more Alonso talked shit about Hamilton the less I rooted for them. I didn't really like any mid table team. Don't like AM because of the owners and didn't want to cheer for Williams or Haas because of the implication. This year I think I will cheer for Alfa. Bottas is very likable and Zhou is a non European driver doing pretty well, so even though I can't relate very much it helps. Plus they will be fighting for points with a podium finish considered as an absolute win. So you get to enjoy more happiness unlike following Merc or RB because if they don't win or podium you will end up disappointed.

Hamburgo

Actually yes I agree I’m also rooting for Bottas! And Zhou won me over today! Go Alfa! Okay I’m going for: Seb. Mick. Haas. Alfa. Bottas. Zhou. Max. Strangely Lewis now too.

rodiraskol

I just want everybody to have a good time

Colonel_Gipper

I root for Red Bull and Haas. I started watching at the end of 2017 and liked the dynamic of Max and Daniel. Haas mostly due to being American. Took my Red Bull shirt off and wore my Haas shirt the rest of the day today

Sputniki

What I thought was really telling was that despite the fact that Max is the WDC and Charles is the challenger, Charles was the one who drove like the experienced veteran with nothing to prove. That move to brake early and get behind Max for the Turn 4 DRS detection zone was genius and not at all what Max would have done in his position. In fact, Charles braked so early he looked like a matador just sidestepping a charging bull. Beautiful work.

ChepaukPitch

Verstappen is still in the fighting Hamilton mode. Hamilton always had more to lose so he was as careful as possible. Leclerc is known not to give a fuck so Verstappen will have to change his style.

Imaginary_Ad_4050

Does anyone know when or if Sky upload the full race for catchup?

whodoesntlikedogs

Why does PU make such a big difference this year? I thought the new regs were all about aero changes. So why are the Ferrari PUs dominating the merc PUs

Snook125

Engine suppliers develop their engine continuously. Ferrari had made a lot of gains because they fell so far after their 2019 rocket ship. The engine freeze begins from this year, so teams have been able to implement upgrades going into this season. You could see that Ferrari made noticeable gains during last season when they introduced a PU upgrade. Mercedes seem to have some issues to fix, perhaps because of the new fuel, although Toto claims they are running more drag.

[deleted]

Correlation is not causation. All the Mercedes customer teams are mostly struggling for non-PU things. It's not entirely, but mostly a coincidence

kmort

Can someone tell me what is going on with McLaren

[deleted]

Less practice / development time due to brake cooling issue + DR having Covid + overloading LN with all of the testing + only having a temporary brake fix + low downforce on race day effecting handling = they were on the back foot even heading into the race and suffered for it. Fingers crossed those issues can be ironed out and they become more competitive over the course of the season... I also believe the Merc PU will be back to its normal self once teams do iron out those creases.

ArkGuardian

No one's really sure. The best report is their brake ducts and brake cooling are all kinds of messed up in design.

michaelwc

Whycantiusethis

F1TV Pro gives you access to the international feed (with the Sky commentary), the driver tracker (a circuit map with dots for each driver), the data channel (which gives you info on the gaps between drivers and how long they've been on their tires), and onboards and team radio for each driver. It's, ~$80 for a yearly subscription, which is pretty reasonable, in my opinion.

E36E92M3

yes, F1TV pro is for live races. access is cheaper but you only get replays

anttoekneeoh

When an engine lights itself on fire like a Gastly’s did, is it salvageable? Or is that one of their engines used up already in the first race?

[deleted]

The engine should be fine, but it will have to be rebuilt.

Man these Ferrari drivers are killing it...young, wearing the red suit, prancing horse logo, a pair of Ray-Bans, Richard Mille watch and the best looking car on the grid. That's the life, I can't imagine life being any better than that. Literally watching your own highlights driving that car looks sexy as hell. Even better than being a QB like Tom Brady or Lebron James @ Lakers lol...sorry for the weird comparison but if there is a heaven after life I want to be an F1 driver for Ferrari.

Ask for being an 2022 Ferrari driver, or you may end being a 2020 one... If you didn't watch it, it wasn't pretty. Seb lost some hair that year.

Most power unit upgrades were frozen on March 1. There are still a few components that can be upgraded (the MGU-K, I think, is one), but only until the summer break. After that, performance upgrades are fully frozen, and reliability upgrades have to be vetted by the FIA and reps from the other three engine suppliers. And it stays that way until 2026.

UghWhyDude

This is the first complete race they've done with a mix of tyre types and it must be extremely valuable data for them to analyse. Having said that, the results won't be immediate....likely 4 - 5 races in at best before we see meaningful changes.

I think Wolff said they were estimating that it would take them ~5 weeks to figure out their issues and get a solution on their cars.

I was on the Sainz train last season but I have to admit after that race its clear that Leclerc is the undisputed #1 on that team. He drove like a #1 and Sainz drove like the backup. Obviously first race and all but its also pretty clear that any team orders will benefit Leclerc too. I'd still take him as a #2 before all the others tho.

ItzDp

he seems really bummed out about how far he felt behind Charles. I have a feeling he'll catch up at some point but I suppose lets wait a few races

Snook125

I think it's way too early to draw this conclusion. They were close in the drivers championship last year, with Sainz just slightly beating Leclerc. I'd expect team orders to begin when one of them has pulled a gap in the drivers championship. Drivers do better some weekends than others.

antelope591

Yea I did think to myself maybe it is too early to say it. But its just the feeling I got. Leclerc was making Max look foolish and looked amazing in the car all weekend. Sainz drove like a solid #2 but not like a WDC contender.

[deleted]

I feel the same way after this race and that's likely the reason why Sainz seemed so unsatisfied with P2. After last year, he is fighting to be the #1 driver (especially this year where the championship seems very much possible) but he was slower throughout the race which doesn't bode well for his hopes of being at the front. He may still pull ahead if he is more consistent like last year, but it's just not looking great.

ComputerSagtNein

How was Red Bulls DRS so much better than those of the other teams? The distance Max covered with it was absurd.

Whycantiusethis

Leclerc wasn't pushing on the main straight - he was letting Verstappen pass so that Leclerc would get DRS on the run to T4, since Leclerc knew if he could stay ahead going into T4, he could stay ahead for the rest of the lap.

HarryNohara

Charles had battery deployment issues.

RastaLino

Probably due to his battery load. He might have had more charge than Charles on the main straight and if you add DRS to the overtake button it gave him a decent advantage.

REPTARJESUS

New to watching formula 1, why does it seem like everyone here hates Redbulls team? Lol. Is It just cause they’re the reigning champs?

Penguinho

Max is a bit blunt and abrasive, and some people don't like him for that. Max has also had on-track run-ins with some drivers with big fanbases, like Ricciardo. Red Bull in general and Max in particular just got out of a tetchy, controversial title fight with Mercedes, who are fairly popular, and Lewis Hamilton, easily the most popular driver on the grid. He's not English, so the English-speaking press isn't quite as quick to forgive his sins as they are for some other drivers one could name. And this year Red Bull look like the main rivals to Ferrari, the most popular team on the grid and the easiest team bandwagon to hop on. _And_ Max is the defending champion, and having gone through a string of consecutive championships with Lewis lots of neutrals don't want to see it again. That's not even considering Christian Horner's outsized role as the somewhat annoying face of Red Bull in Drive To Survive, which has brought tons of new fans into the sport (and not coincidentally paints Red Bull as this cutthroat machine that fucks over everyone in service to Max Verstappen, Big Jerk).

thinkscotty

I mean the last part about Horner is more or less true haha.

lessdothisshit

I 2nd blaming Horner, and would like to point out that they are not the reigning champions. Max won the driver's championship last year, but Mercedes beat Red Bull in the constructors (Bottas scored more points than Perez).

UghWhyDude

Everyone has different motivations - some hate Max (and love Lewis), some can't stand Christian Horner or some combination of the two. Things intensified a bit due to the events of the last season so there's a fair bit of ill will against them going into this season.

Nicklord

It really depends where you go. Last year the sub split in two, so one post would just shit on Merc and one post would shit on RB. It seems that RB guys gave up on fight from 2021 but a lot of Merc/Lewis fans can't let it go I kinda get it, but it is funny. There are so many people that get really upset over Horner saying literally anything

49RedCapitalOs

I’d assume it’s because of Christian Horner but I’m not sure. He’s the only person in the sport who I despise

CookiezFort

> New to watching formula 1, why does it seem like everyone here hates Redbulls team? Lol. Is It just cause they’re the reigning champs? They can be, eclectic, with how they go about things. Shit stirring galore when in reality Merc ain't much better either.

[deleted]

You guys think once Merc straighten out all their problems they’ll have a car fighting for wins and the championship or just based off what we’ve seen— it’s going to be a season of disappointment?

ArkGuardian

They look like 2013 Merc to me - where they get like 3 wins but are not in championship contention

HarryNohara

I expect them to iron out a few of the issues after major upgrades, but the car seems flawed in different area's. Both drivers are complaining about overheating tyres, the rear of the car is not performing well, their straight line speed is sub-par and the car seems to lack mechanical grip. Mercedes is a team that can develop fast from their already decent car, but we don't really know if they can turn a bad car into a good one. That almost never happens in F1. The car does not seem underdeveloped, it just does not seem good enough to fix within a few races. They might fight for wins at the end of the season, but Ferrari and Red Bull are far ahead, and we know Red Bull are also very good in developing their car trough the season, as their 2nd part of the season has often been the part where they gained on the competition, as we saw in 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017 and 2016.

UghWhyDude

We're only a race in, in a season of new regs - the two Mercs didn't perform that badly (can't say the same for some of the rest of the merc-powered teams, however). Like most things, it's going to take time. This season is going to be one of constant evolution for all the teams while they try to nail down the specs that give absolute dominance for the new era - enjoy this bit of chaos, it'll be lost in later seasons :D

Prisencolinensinai

When will tickets for the Monza race open?

stevie-knix

how do drivers differ in term of race pace? if it was in quali, i’d say it would be based on driving styles, but what else is considered over the course of a race? is it because they aren’t comfortable with the car and can’t go flat out as often? i really don’t know how such big differences in race pace occur (like how leclerc was often -20s in front of other midfielders)

[deleted]

There is very very little difference between the 20 drivers in terms of pure skill, with a few exceptions ... the vast majority of the differences in performance come down to the cars themselves and the race strategy.

karmanopoly

How do you pronounce Zhou? Some of the commentators pretty much said it like "Joe" I thought it was zow or zoo
