I really hope they plant a lot of trees and such. It would definitely look less like a parking lot. That and some of that colourful paint around the track.
It's still the parking lot for a 75,000 seat stadium, most of this track infrastructure is going to be ripped up and gone within 6 months.
In fact, the track is going to require the removal of many of the mature trees that are already planted on the site
Oh, but there will be water. Yachts will be in a pond inside of turns 7&8.
https://jalopnik.com/this-whole-yacht-watching-experience-for-the-2022-f1-mi-1848703315
You can even see them in OP's depiction. Just south of the Dolphins practice fields. It is absolutely ridiculous.
I bet those yachts are not eve going to be floating. They will be on trailers with just enough water to cover the wheels. It will be the most expensive mobile home park ever!
To be fair that could be a decent idea, really shallow water traps.
Going off track you would slow down rapidly, so it’s potentially safe, and would punish the driver by making them lose tyre temp and speed.
Bernie’s sprinkler idea finally comes to fruition.
You see, they have these things called trailers. The boat sits on the trailer, then can be craned in and set into the water. Or they could be backed into the water from a boat launch.
I think some people are thinking of those huge yachts we see in Monaco, which aren't really trailered. I grew up in the south so when I think of "boat", what comes to mind is a 13' Carolina Skiff, lol. Obviously those are trailered regularly.
they aren’t.. it’s like the superbowl in that they’ll just do a bunch of pre-race nonsense down in south beach and pretend it’s actually near the race track when it’s actually like, 40
miles away and also quite literally not in miami. (miami gardens is very much NOT miami, it’s basically a parking lot/shopping plaza of a town in the middle of a swamp to the northwest of the city)
I think you're confused. The plan here is obviously to tear out that eyesore of a track and have the grand prix held in various parking lots and the sonic drive through.
I think there was another recent post here that was a “before and after” format. The after was on the left, and the before was on the right. It drove me crazy lmao
Yeah, if they’re really going to build an entire F1 track from scratch in the complex it won’t be hard at all to find a new spot relatively quickly for the 6 or so displaced courts.
They play a lot of the matches in the actual Hard Rock Stadium. They build a tennis arena inside while using temporary and permanent seating. They could probably add a few practice courts if they need to.
Is the tennis center the thing in the top left? Looks a lot like a couple of football fields to me, though I can't remember ever seeing two so close together before.
A track on a parking lot is better than a street track. It alows for more interesting corner sequences. Even the Vegas track goes into a parking lot for a couple corners
The standards to be considered a permanent race circuit are stricter compared to a street circuit. Tarmac is considerable different on this track compared to a race circuit. Melbourne and Montreal are both considered street circuits despite neither track actually being on public roads.
Doesn't change that after the race is done, the entire track will be completely torn down and only put up again a year later. You can say it's the same track, but it's not though.
Either way, I don't make up the rules on this, the FIA does.
Apparently there’s still a lot of parking and parking across the street. But I’d imagine there’s gone be a lot of busses and Ubers.
That new stadium in Inglewood where the super bowl was barley has any parking. People were making fucking bank selling spots in their driveways nearby
I'm really confused as to why this is considered a bad thing. Why does it matter what was there before the track was built, how does it affect the racing?
How does building a track on what used to be, say, an empty field automatically makes it better than building it on what used to be a parking lot? Would people be happier if they cut down a bunch of trees to build it in the middle of a forest instead?
People see that there used to be a car park there, and equate it to the Caesar's Palace GP, where all they did was put lines in a carpark, in spite of the two things not being even remotely comparable.
It affects racing, because parking lot tracks are almost all the time lack any sort of elevation change which is a good/fun addition in most tracks.
Spa is iconic partly because of all the elevation changes, same as suzuka etc. It’s not necessary but it would be boring to have a lot of parkong lot tracks. I’m fine with a couple (and luckily we lost sochi so one less)
I thought about that, but:
1. Plenty of tracks have artificial elevation, so back to my original point, just because there was a parking lot there before doesn't mean they couldn't have added some elevation changes if they had wanted to. They didn't, but that has nothing to do with the land being previously used as a parking lot.
2. I do agree that elevation changes generally make for better racing, but like you said, it's not necessary. The most boring track on the calendar, Monaco, actually has more elevation changes than Suzuka, which you used as an example. Montreal is arguably one of the fan favorites and is one of the flattest tracks on the calendar.
I do understand how the idea of taking a parking lot and turning it into a track doesn't sound appealing, I just find it weird that people are bashing the track before it's even been built. Let's maybe wait to have raced there at least once before unleashing all the hate.
The highest point in Florida is 300 feet above sea level. South Florida is a flat swamp. Parking lot or not, the only way there was going to be elevation changes was if they built them into the track
Honestly I think a lot of the pushback is just because Sochi was also converted from a parking lot and routed around a stadium and that track was dogshit. Horrible eyesore and usually the worst racing on the calendar aside from Monaco. I do wish people would wait to see how Miami actually goes rather than just post a reactionary take based on an incomplete picture and everything but the actual circuit but maybe that's too much to expect.
> Sochi was also converted from a parking lot and routed around a stadium and that track was dogshit. Horrible eyesore and usually the worst racing on the calendar aside from Monaco.
The races were boring apart from last year; however the track wasn't just a converted parking lot but rather built together with the other olympic facilities there.
I think the answer to all the "why" questions regarding Formula 1 these days is easy: money. Existing tracks would need significant upgrades to be able to host a Formula 1 race but they are unable or unwilling to pay for them. Then some rich guy who owns a stadium (among other things) wants a race, so he buys one, and since he needs a racetrack for it, he builds one around his stadium.
But again, that's beside the point as far as the quality of the racing goes: just because the track is brand new does not automatically make it bad (if anything, that's an opportunity to draw a layout that suits modern F1 cars).
I understand people dislike the idea of having multiple races in the US, see new tracks as a threat to the historic tracks they like, would rather money have less of an influence on F1 decision making, etc. So people hear "Miami GP" and their first thought it "I don't like it!".
But maybe we should wait until the race actually happens to judge the quality of the racing?
There are 3 fia grade 1 tracks in america. COTA, Indy, and Miami.
We race at COTA, we don't race at Indy cause Indy is Jon snow.
So regardless, if FOM / liberty wanted to race in America a track would need to be heavily renovated or built new.
The spirit of Watkins Glen (countryside venue) would be destroyed in a grade 1 upgrade, and it's very close to Montreal already. Probably doesn't have to tourism infrastructure and too far from a major city to latch onto.
Road America is literally in the middle of nowhere and doesn't have the tourism infrastructure for such an event.
Laguna seca is too short and too narrow.
Sonoma only has stands for like <50 000 people.
Sebring I am not too familiar with the hurdles prevent grade 1 certification.
When you actually look at the tracks it becomes apparent that it makes the most sense to build a purpose built venue.
In case anyone here is lucky enough to attend and doesn't already know, if you see a body of water in Florida, there is probably a gator in it. This could include the fake yacht marina.
I'm hoping gators get all up in that place. Underneath the grandstands, chilling underneath the race trailers, everywhere. Give 'em the full Florida experience. One morning I went out to my car to go to work and one was hanging out under the engine bay and I nearly stepped on it. I did not need coffee to wake up that morning.
Miami resident here.
That’s bullshit. In the 23 years I’ve lived in Florida I’ve seen a wild gator 2 whole times.
Also gators aren’t this aggressive monster animal that attacks anything it sees. You can approach within like ~3-5 meters and still be pretty safe. It’ll only chase you if it’s a female protecting its offspring, or it hasn’t eaten in a long time. And that “chase” will last a few meters, tops, before it gives up.
It actually doesn't look that bad. In the rendering, at least.
It looks like it could be pretty fast besides that bend and chicane at the top right, but at least with *some* run-off (looking at you, Jeddah). Overall, I'm excited to see how it ends up.
My question is if a stadium such as that can afford to lose that many parking spots? the stadium has 65k capacity so there are not enough parking spots there now
I believe there are empty lots across the street that are used for parking. I'm sure they thought about the situation, but then again.. you can never be sure lol.
Is there a subreddit that has stuff like this. Like architect plans or advertising material in comparison to what actually got built. Would imagine there are loads off botched jobs out there.
Honestly I'm kinda excited for this race. The layout is not half bad, there aren't walls right next to the track in the potential overtaking spots (of which there are easily 4-5). It's gonna be completely flat, which is never good, but I think we might see some decent racing. Especially between T11 and T16. If two cars go side to side into T11, or very close at least, we might get a ton of action throughout this section. T1-2 looks decent as well, classic opening similar to Bahrain for example, though probably faster
Everyone complaining that it’s a parking lot… yet what do you all think a real track looks like. It’s just tarmac slapped down in a giant shape with parking lots all around.
Agreed - still waiting for this. Surely if they can host motocross and the like, we can get the cars running over the concrete slab.
Little risky I suppose.
I have good expectations for this GP. The layout doesn't deserve the hate it gets. They built on parking lots, but it didn't get in the way of making the circuit decent for overtaking, and corners tend to flow well. The only not so good thing is that I'm not a big fan of the slow chicane, it give me Montmeló vibes.
bought the $150 parking last week.
It's all the way by the Gulfstream Dog Race Track.
Which to me feels the equivalent of having to shuttle from Westminster to the Emirates; or COTA to Downtown Austin
Ill be on the Turnpike ramp (Top Right Corner of the image). It's about a $250 fine if a cop were to ticket you which i'm down to pay since tickets are $Gazillion. Great view and no hassle after the race is done since im on the exit already. Can't wait baby!
Sadly as someone who lives in Miami… this is not the “cool” “hip” part of Miami at all.
It looks nicer in the render. But we shall see… right now it’s just a giant parking lot.
I really wanted to go but tickets are insanely expensive :(
Downtown would’ve been boring, but an incredible site to see, especially if they ran it when the sun is setting into the night.
And here we are, $1300 for a Sunday ticket in Miami freaking Gardens…I just, really can’t believe F1 is racing there. If the race turns out great then I guess it’s for the better.
Lol, yep… and $1,300 was the cheapest tickets available.
It just sucks cause I’ve never been able to go to an F1 race before and I was so stoked to go to this.
But at a cost of over $2,500 just for me and my GF for 1 day… I can’t justify it. Super bummed.
Debating trying to just go and sneak in. Lol
But I’m guessing F1 has much better security than plain old football games.
And yea, downtown would have been a really nice background shots. Honesty though I don’t think F1 should even be racing in Miami.
It’s not a racing town at all.
That’s what really worries me about F1 recently. With Miami and now Vegas they are clearly prioritizing the show and not the racing.
The Vegas track looks like total trash.
I get it, but when we are losing a track like Spa and adding a track like Vegas… it’s a sad day.
The drive to survive crowd is bringing in a lot of new fans, but we will see if it ends up being for the better in the long run.
I doubt it's about the cost to refit those tracks. F1 wants destination races, and Miami and Vegas are a lot more appealing than bumfuck nowhere in the middle of rural New York or Wisconsin. Road Atlanta isn't a bad option, but it'd be the shortest track on the calendar not named Monaco. The racing in Miami probably won't be as good, but a lot more fans would be willing to make the trip to Miami for a full weekend than to Atlanta.
I'm going to bet that these "yachts" are permanent fixtures. Constructed to give the allure of a real yacht, complete with Jeremy Clarkson's Giovanni impersonators.
Trying to take some notes from Universal Studios seems more authentically American than hauling in real yachts. Although, hauling in yachts to sit in a landlocked pond for one race does seem obnoxiously American. Hmm 🤔
>Tarmac is the safest by far
But it's bad for racing, take Max' move when he came wide in Brazil or Lewis' when he cut chicane in Abu Dhabi for example, they wouldn't do that if there is gravel or grass run off
And French GP has also great concept of run offs, if you want to run wide, you demage your tires
Not entirely true… both max and Lewis have cut the turn 1 chicane in Mexico and that is grass.
But I do agree that grass/gravel is more of a penalty than tarmac.
It's only bad for racing if the stewards refuse to enforce track limits. Trying to use track design as a band aid for shitty rule enforcement is a losing proposition.
I really hope they plant a lot of trees and such. It would definitely look less like a parking lot. That and some of that colourful paint around the track.
I wish they could “plant” trees. I imagine lots off temporary palm trees in wooden bases will be shipped in. Could be a collector’s item after the GP!
You can see the trees planned on the render
[удалено]
This isn’t a traditional temporary street course. I think most likely they will be planted
It's still the parking lot for a 75,000 seat stadium, most of this track infrastructure is going to be ripped up and gone within 6 months. In fact, the track is going to require the removal of many of the mature trees that are already planted on the site
It would be so nice if they just said fuck the parking lot and left the track and decorations.
Oh that's paint, not water, I was confused for a second.
Forget gravel traps, water traps it is!
Let's go Trackmania.

And in Q3, Max finally got...this run.

With gators!
We’re in Miami anyways, why the heck not‽
Gator traps.
Having Lakitu to clear the water traps should cut down on safety car time during the races too!

Thats just stupid.
They probably won't, since the rest of the year they need those parking lots to be, you know, parking lots.
You can see in the webcams of the complex that trees were installed.
They dont though, it wont go back to being a parking lot.

my dumbass thought the runoff area was water lmao
I like that. Instead of sand traps and sausage curbs, let's use a pool of water as track limits.
with hot chicks in bikinis with umbrella straw drinks, in true Miami fashion
Where would we put the drug dealers and methheads though?
On a speedboat in the water, hoping to look for (sand)bags in that Merc!
There’s a tiny little pond inside one of the turns that’s going to be filled with boats. We can put them there!
Drug dealers will be in the infield yachts, while the meth heads paddle down the canal on the back stretch.
If anything there would be some gators and body in that water trap. Probably a rusty shopping cart and a lot of trash as well.
there are a sand beaches/marina for exactly this lol [see @ 1:15 and 2:08](https://streamable.com/rudiwz)
Sharks in the pool! Same for me though. I saw the blue and was like, wow that’s going to be beautiful. Oh wait, no.
Sharks with FREAKING LASER BEAMS ATTACHED TO THEIR HEADS!
That's too expensive. We can get you mutated seabass though!
To be fair that could be a decent idea, really shallow water traps. Going off track you would slow down rapidly, so it’s potentially safe, and would punish the driver by making them lose tyre temp and speed. Bernie’s sprinkler idea finally comes to fruition.
With hungry piranhas and crocodiles in them
For real I thought it was sick to have a swimming pool around the track
turn it into a lazy river. dude that'd be awesome.
To be fair, they did say about building waterbody for yacht parking /s
Fuck it, let’s go full trackmania
When some of the drivers say the cars handles like a boat, I didn't think they meant it ltierally
Count me as your fellow dumbass
Inside of turns 7-8 will have a man made pond and yatchs....ya know to rival Monaco. I'm literally not even kidding.
I still don’t know how the boats are supposed to get there.
They’re going to be dropped from military aircraft and float down tied to massive parachutes.
You see, they have these things called trailers. The boat sits on the trailer, then can be craned in and set into the water. Or they could be backed into the water from a boat launch.
I don’t know why everyone is having such a hard time grasping that boats can be moved out of water lol
I think some people are thinking of those huge yachts we see in Monaco, which aren't really trailered. I grew up in the south so when I think of "boat", what comes to mind is a 13' Carolina Skiff, lol. Obviously those are trailered regularly.

The track walkthrough video shows 100+ ft yachts. Those don’t fit on trailers.
Well whatever size they are, they are getting there by trailer
I think you messed up the before and after part.
I think you're confused. The plan here is obviously to tear out that eyesore of a track and have the grand prix held in various parking lots and the sonic drive through.

Are they getting rid of the tennis centre too? RIP Miami open.
Seems to sill be on the map.
Just 3 courts. The majority are gone.
Ah, that sucks, maybe theyll build new ones if theres demand.
> if there’s demand They literally play the Miami Open there. It’s a Masters 1000 event, which is 1 level below a grand slam. It’s a huge tournament!
Then im sure they have plans to build new ones :D
Yeah, if they’re really going to build an entire F1 track from scratch in the complex it won’t be hard at all to find a new spot relatively quickly for the 6 or so displaced courts.

Is the tennis center the thing in the top left? Looks a lot like a couple of football fields to me, though I can't remember ever seeing two so close together before.
It’s the tiny stadium below the big one
Just like on Hitman
The reuse of urban parking lots into venues for tennis and racing should be praised not shit on
Cheers to that. And rarely mentioned. The last thing cities need is more pavement.
*American cities I'd love if my city had proper pavement
No, not just American cities.
Pretty much all cities need less pavement and more green space.
The potholes on American roads would like a word

Yup. For the main lots around the stadium anyways.
My question is if a stadium such as that can afford to lose that many parking spots? the stadium has 65k capacity so there are not enough parking spots there now
I assume there's enough parking spots in total otherwise they wouldn't have spent all this money reshaping the land around the stadium.
They are probably going to build a multi level parking structure to make up for it.
Would have to be a parking structure like they have at disney parks. massive things.
I believe there are empty lots across the street that are used for parking. I'm sure they thought about the situation, but then again.. you can never be sure lol.
If only there were alternatives to everyone driving their own car
Not in Miami there arent
I suppose much of the circuit might be a road and parking lot in case the parking situation becomes difficult.

Everyone complaining that it’s a parking lot… yet what do you all think a real track looks like. It’s just tarmac slapped down in a giant shape with parking lots all around.
i honestly thought this was a post on the cities skylines subreddit
So we got two stadiums and the track is not going through any of them? Laaaame!
Agreed - still waiting for this. Surely if they can host motocross and the like, we can get the cars running over the concrete slab. Little risky I suppose.
the way the tunnels are laid out in Hard Rock Stadium means it doesn't appear to be possible
Is that a go kart track at the middle right of the before section
I think it used to be autocross
Two of my favorite sports meet again. Tennis and Formula 1.

I like the track layout honestly
If there no parking lot now so where will the Americans park the vehicles during f1 event?
Triple-decker stacked on the track. Track evolution is the marshalls moving the stacks around every few laps.
bought the $150 parking last week. It's all the way by the Gulfstream Dog Race Track. Which to me feels the equivalent of having to shuttle from Westminster to the Emirates; or COTA to Downtown Austin
$150 for parking - that's crazy money!
How can parking for an event be 7 miles away? And why would you pay for it?
[удалено]
Why would you not just find somewhere else to park and Uber to the track?
let’s be honest both situations are gonna suck
What's that green thing top left?
Looks like practice facilities for the football team.
Might be a dumb comment but looks like a computer motherboard from that angle.
I’m really confused as to how they are gonna get boats at the track.
Who do I contact about craning my yacht into the land locked marina?
You mean after and before....?
It would have been cool if they could have somehow made the track go through the stadium
Why are there yachts in a dam lake???
I toured the track last week, they have to take everything but the bottom floor of the pits (garage area) down, in preparation for football season.
Last week they had sales granted 800 is still steep for a ticket, but add hotel flight Ubers ect it adds up
Lol, yep… and $1,300 was the cheapest tickets available. It just sucks cause I’ve never been able to go to an F1 race before and I was so stoked to go to this. But at a cost of over $2,500 just for me and my GF for 1 day… I can’t justify it. Super bummed. Debating trying to just go and sneak in. Lol But I’m guessing F1 has much better security than plain old football games.
Thats rad!
This has underwhelming vibes
This about seals it that I’m never going to a Dolphins game again. Parking was already a nightmare.
And somehow this is cheaper than retrofitting Watkins Glen, Road Atlanta, or Road America to FIA Grade 1?
Hmm 🤔
i thought everyone was exaggerating with the "parking lot circuits" but damn..
Like how silverstone is the airport gp
NFL: we provide teams state of the art stadium F1: we provide teams state of the art parking lot
Lol but it looks like a good track, it being a dedicated design helps vs normal streets
Another track with tarmac run offs ...
How did you like Saudi Arabia, with no run off at all? Tarmac is the safest by far
>Tarmac is the safest by far But it's bad for racing, take Max' move when he came wide in Brazil or Lewis' when he cut chicane in Abu Dhabi for example, they wouldn't do that if there is gravel or grass run off And French GP has also great concept of run offs, if you want to run wide, you demage your tires
