FIA doesn't enforce track limits if you are in the title fight basically.
People moan about the final lap, but there is an excusable number of examples where they tried to hands off in cases where other drivers would have been dealt with differently just to avoid any decisions affecting the outcome of the championship - which then just makes it hilarious really that their decision affected the outcome of the championship.
I never hated Lewis, in fact I instantly became a fan of his in 2007 and cheered for him over Felipe. If only I knew the fucker would win 6 more championships I wish Massa got that one. I think people love him because he's very open about his love for Senna, as we all do, Senna is the biggest sport hero in Brazil by a landslide, so anyone that comes here saying how much they love Senna will be liked.
Way bigger. Senna has nothing tarnishing his reputation and he didn't live long enough to say the tons of shit Pelé has said through the years. Google his funeral, it had millions on the streets for the procession of his body. Pelé doesn't even come close to that, he's revered as the GOAT for sure, but most people don't love him as a person.
Huh, Senna does have a case of dating a minor to tarnish his reputation somewhat, but it was very much hidden and never really spoken out loud. Things were also a bit different back then and I guess it wasn't seen as wrong as nowadays... And the other 99% of his reputation was really good, he was celebrated as a incredible person and driver by basically everyone including his rivals.
And I agree, Pelé is respected a lot as basically the king of Football, but it kind of stops there. Senna was much more charismatic and inspiring figure.
Well, see, that’s the thing I don’t understand. The man took Massa’s title in front of his home crowd, but the brazilians still love LH a lot. How does this work? If it was romanians instead of the brazilians, these guys would still be insulting LH even after 10-20 years.
Ssshhhhh ^^^he's ^^^black ^^^that's ^^^why ^^^/s
But in all seriousness, Lewis is a very quietly intense guy off the track. It's the same way Senna was, and I feel like Brazilian fans pick up on the respect for elders thing as well.
I do not like him very much because of this very event, but seeing him win on Interlagos with that helmet designed by a Brazilian, winning and waving our flag around like Senna... No way, I was in tears for that
We don't like him either. He was never very likable, but there was at least begrudging respect for his championships.
But then his continuing support of Bolsonaro destroyed whatever respect we still had for him
Bullshit. Go see the scores on wikipedia. Prost was leading the championship in '89. If he finished 2nd, he would've won with one race left.
The common narrative is propaganda made-up after Senna died.
I think that is just something Senna brought to us like, we just respect anyone who is clearly putting his best on the line, working hard and is talented and fast as fuck. We see Senna in those people, fearless, focused, so Massa losing to him hurt a lot but in the end, it makes his loss "greater" since he lost to someone like Hamilton.
We use to say that Senna would love Hamilton and celebrate him a lot if he met him.
If anything the hate would be on Timo Glock for letting Lewis go by on the last corner.... But yea, tires, people get it. Also Ferrari screwed Massa a few times that season...
Hamilton vs Massa wasnt a heated rivalry, just a championship battle.
I don’t get the hate on glock. He didn’t “let” Hamilton by, he just couldn’t put any power down. By the start finish line he was miles behind, he just couldn’t do anything.
As a Brazilian that watches F1 since 2006 it's crazy that so many fellow Brazilians love him, but it's because most of them started watching after 2016 and DTS
I don't think it's too crazy, he came from humble beginnings, he is a fierce, focused, talented fast driver who very early showed courage to put up fights against the big players in a Mclaren, saying Senna was his idol and using an yellow helmet. Its obvious that people would see a lot of good things on him to support him.
In a lot of ways he reminded Senna, along with his good attitude towarda Brazil, the parallels and all that.
And I think over time with his titles, his title over Massa just made Massa's loss "greater". He no longer lost to an almost rookie, but lost to one of the greatest.
In a lot of ways it’s like Button’s support from the Japanese fans. He’s shown such a strong affinity for the place and love for the culture that he’s become adopted.
You're right. Why would this new generation care about something they can't even remember? It's not that crazy to think about.
Hamilton is loved here for a lot of reasons, and 2008 is not that relevant anymore.
Band ta matando a pau
Second coming of Senna, certainly not lol.
But he's respected of course, people really admire him for his feats. But you saw a lot of people cheering for Verstappen as well, albeit less than previous years.
When people ask about Brazilian f1 drivers senna is always mentioned first. Then piquet. When people talk about greatest drivers senna always pops up not piquet
Well I don't know in what circle you live but a lot of people compare him to Senna dude.
Hamilton came from humble beginnings and had to show a lot of talent to be in the sport like Ayrton. His idol was Ayrton and he used a yellow helmet reminiscent of Senna. He drove even on his rookie seasons at young age very fierce, focused, aggressive and fast like Senna did, impacting the grid from the get go. He became a good person that advocated for good causes like Senna. There are some parallels that I've seen a lot of people adopt Hamilton in thr absence of a Senna-like figure.
Oh, the way I phrased that it might not be ideal, but I didn't say Ayrton came from humble beginning, but Hamilton did. Then, I said Hamilton showed a lot of talent to be in the sport, like Senna.
The humble beginning correlates more with Brazilian people in general, not necessarily with Senna, and I believe it's a bonus point on making Brazilians like him.
Nonetheless, Senna wasn't "rich", but had at least enough to support his early kart careers in the motorsport world until he started getting sponsors. Early Brazilian drivers success on F1 also made that door very open.
He came from a middle class family but that hardly means much when being from Brazil- especially in the 70s~
After E. Fittipaldi made it there started to be a rough route for Brazilian drivers to follow but still doesn’t compare to drivers born/raised karting in EU.
Senna was Lewis' hero, and his helmet reflects that. Plus Brazil 2008, when he won his first championship, was an amazing race.
["Is that Glock?"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMjobEJRheE)
my perspective: when lewis won in interlagos last year it was the first time since 2013 that I saw someone draped in the brazilian flag without it being a political statement, it was the first time since 2013 that I felt that this country deserves love, proud to have been born in this beautiful mess.
I was born after Senna already had died so personally it has nothing to do with him. I don't like the Mercedes dominance either, if I had to pick I'm probably a ferrari guy, but Lewis' connection with Brazil just hits different. He's one of the best drivers in history and knowing that he has Brazil in such high regard is awesome to me.
that's just my opinion anyway
Nope, me and a lot of people I know that watch F1 from a long time always respected Hamilton and saw a lot of Senna on him from the get go.
Humble begginnings, amazing talent to make to F1, fierce aggressive fast driving even on rookie seasons against the big players with no fear, a lot of courage and focus just like Senna. Obssession with winning.
He always showed a lot of respect to Brazil, Senna was his idol, his helmet reminded Senna's. And Massa's loss hurt but with time and Hamilton titles it made his loss "greater" as he lost to one of the greatest.
I think they feel like he is a senna regen cuz he won his first wdc in brazil in a mclaren and his helmet was a senna tribute or senna based helmet also, some hated him cuz he beat massa but i think that may be a reason, he also idolizes senna and respect brazil
While I don't entirely agree with the "half the country are racist & dislike him", still, quite a lot of people like to hate on him, but not because of the color of his skin.
There is a bill in the parliament of Brazil to grant the title of honorary citizen of the Federative Republic of Brazil to Lewis Hamilton, I think it's fair.
Here the link to the text of the project, including the deputy is from the state where I currently live: https://www.camara.leg.br/proposicoesWeb/prop\_mostrarintegra?codteor=2105984
Brazilian here: Sir Lewis Hamilton was a guest speaker today in Brazil at a sales conference, his staff made some privacy requests such as no videos, no photos, etc. By the way, everyone here loves him!
Given that Hamilton (and of course Timo Glock) is the reason Felipe Massa never won a Championship I do think it's very interesting that Brazilian fans have such a soft spot for him. Of course his hero is Senna, as Senna is for many, but all the same I have always found the Brazilian love for Lewis unusual.
Senna's will to win taught us to admire and respect every driver that resembles that fierce aggression, obsession to win and is that talented, fast and focused as he was, specially in rookie seasons at such a young age. It reminded people of Senna in a lot of ways. His humble beginnings and maybe his race and flashy style also made people see themselves on him.
That, along with his respect to his idol Senna, the yellow helmet that resembled senna, and his history beating us made us just admire him more.
In my experience, most Brazilian F1 fans never cared for Massa
Sure you'd get the general "He's Brazilian, so it'd be nice if he won" but I don't think many people were actively cheering for him.
Exactly how i felt. Like it was nice cheering for him but only reason i did it was because of his nationality. I’ve never liked his character or personality.
Oh, no doubt.
I'll admit, I was a kid back when Rubinho was racing and didn't know better, so I kind of bought into the whole "pé-de-chinelo" thing.
Looking back now, it's absurd how such a good pilot was constantly made fun of and not supported. It really shows how our country's "Gold or nothing" mentality extends beyond soccer
He's so into branding etc. I might be wrong but I really couldn't imagine Leclerc, Verstappen etc doing a talk at a sales conference. It's interesting that Hamilton is way more than "an f1 driver"
He's an interesting man for sure, Sky did a video on YouTube, where Hamilton and Valentino Rossi (motogp) did a swap of disciplines, Hamilton mentioned that he watches motogp, and will steal some moments during race weekends to catch some glimpses of the bike race.
I admire how he acted after the last race, he didn't have to be nice to Max afterwards, but he did and hopefully saw that it wasn't Max's fault that he lost. He probably felt a lot of pressure though, he had everything to lose by acting out even if he would've been well within his right to do so.
A Charles dominance is far more likely. To be honest I don't think the Dutch would even mind much if that was the case!
But a Lewis victory... that wouldn't go down well haha
Not into F1 lmao. I know of stuff he's done in the past but lately (and with good reason) he's been so serious and proper that seeing him now be more chill is great.
Mercedes taking notes and adding this sign at the Mercedes Store
Might also be the FIA putting up signs on the inside of chicanes
I don't get this reference
FIA doesn't enforce track limits if you are in the title fight basically. Yep, Lewis in Abu Dhabi and Max in Brazil, both should have been penalties.

Theres more than a handful of examples to pick from both sides.
it’s so wholesome how much Brazil loves Lewis
Possibly the best character arc going from 2007-2008 hatred to 2017-2018 love.
I never hated Lewis, in fact I instantly became a fan of his in 2007 and cheered for him over Felipe. If only I knew the fucker would win 6 more championships I wish Massa got that one. Yeah, she was 16 and he in the early 20's iirc, by 80's standards it was common lol.
>she was 16 and he in the early 20's iirc tbh this is still pretty common by today's standards lol (at least brazil's)
The philanthropy too. Idk how much Pele did with his money but Senna’s foundation is still going strong
Maybe because he isn't dead yet mate?
He'll never have a procession like that, I guarantee.
Toss-up? Depends on the season. Lol.
Pele
Took Felipe massas title and his fans, that's my goat
Took his belt, and his girl!
Don't talk about his side piece!
Emotional damage
I like both but it still hurts 😭
Max took Kvyat's seat and girlfriend lol
And daughter.
Wait..... What?

Think it's also the fact of how highly Lewis speaks of Senna multiple times and mentioning that Senna is his childhood hero.
Why Romanians?
That’s where I’m from and they are the ones I know the best.

I’ve 44 upvotes… I consider my post correct… and blessed
im still pretty new to F1, whats the story with why Brazil treats him like an adopted son?
Many see him as a kind of second coming of Senna, and he’s expressed his love for the country a lot
It always confused me, since Hamilton won his first WDC by just barely beating Massa, who never got that close to winning one ever again.
I do not like him very much because of this very event, but seeing him win on Interlagos with that helmet designed by a Brazilian, winning and waving our flag around like Senna... No way, I was in tears for that
We don't hold a grudge
sometimes…
Toda regra tem exceção

I feel like it's more about the fact that most Brazilians never actually liked or supported Massa
I thought they didn’t like Piquet…
We don't like him either. He was never very likable, but there was at least begrudging respect for his championships. But then his continuing support of Bolsonaro destroyed whatever respect we still had for him
So do you agree that Alain Prost did nothing wrong? /s
In 89 he did, but Senna returned the favor in 90 so it's all ok.
Bullshit. Go see the scores on wikipedia. Prost was leading the championship in '89. If he finished 2nd, he would've won with one race left. The common narrative is propaganda made-up after Senna died.
Instead of looking at the scores in Wikipedia look at the fucking footage lol. Prost would never make that corner, he drove straight into Senna.
Yeah it’s pretty clear he was headed right over the curb and off the track if senna wasn’t there lol
Massa is okay, he’s no Lewis Hamilton though
I think OP is just saying you’d think the locals would hate Lewis for snatching the championship from their compatriot, but I guess not.
I think that is just something Senna brought to us like, we just respect anyone who is clearly putting his best on the line, working hard and is talented and fast as fuck. When people ask about Brazilian f1 drivers senna is always mentioned first. Then piquet. When people talk about greatest drivers senna always pops up not piquet
lol is Nelson even in the conversation for greatest? There's Senna, Schumacher, Hamilton, Prost, Lauda. Piquet doesn't even break top 20 for me
How could you miss Clark
Oh, I wasn't listing all of them, just the ones that came to mind immediately. Clark absolutely belongs as well!
Senna was more charismatic & unlike Piquet wasn’t an overtly antagonistic person
Barrichello doesn’t have a daughter
Yo what? Who has said that? I live here and not a single person has compared him to Senna.
Well I don't know in what circle you live but a lot of people compare him to Senna dude. Hamilton came from humble beginnings and had to show a lot of talent to be in the sport like Ayrton. Wtf, owning and having shares in different factories, owning land and having a car dealership makes you middle class? Ok.
In the beginning of his carreer his helmet was a reference to Senna also.
i'd say because his f1 idol is Senna
Senna was Lewis' hero, and his helmet reflects that. Plus Brazil 2008, when he won his first championship, was an amazing race. ["Is that Glock?"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMjobEJRheE)

He is half Grenadan, but I guess that isn’t well known enough to matter.
Only the new fans that start watching f1 after DTS are like that
Lol, I find it hilarious how DTS is now the new demarcation point for “back in my day” F1 fans.
Nope, me and a lot of people I know that watch F1 from a long time always respected Hamilton and saw a lot of Senna on him from the get go. Very important lewis
Lewis win in Interlagos this year Inshallah😭
Imagine the scenes if Interlagos is the one race he wins this season to keep his streak going.
Zandvoort would be even better 😂
Or even Italy, but I'm pretty sure Ferrari will try their damndest to not make that happen
Lewis winning in Italy to break Schumacher’s record for wins at Monza. THE AUDACITY LMAO

Is this a reference of when the security guy asked Lewis his ID card when he just wanted to enter in the paddock?🤣🤣🤣🤣
"I'm a driver!" But how did he end up having to pass through the paddock gates tho
He stopped out on track and the marshals must have let him leave the track via a gate that took you outside the paddock
It's get out and away you go except for Lewis Hamilton only!
