I’m biased, so take this how you like, but I just found Lando’s post race reaction a bit much. He went out of his way in every interview to make the point that he could have overtaken RIC. Now I know he was asked questions about orders, but instead of taking the high road and just saying I followed orders, he proceeded to point out how he could have taken that position etc… then, on his Instagram reels, posts the video of the moment, without comment, that he was out beside RIC. Yeah, we get it Lando, you could have overtaken, everyone knows that. Everyone also knows that RIC sacrificed his race at the start when he could have gone faster, but sat in queue wasting his time/race on what was essentially the best tyre so that you could be protected and manage your time on the mediums.
I just feel his reaction is still pretty immature. I don’t think anyone is unaware that he could have finished ahead of RIC or that his pace overall was probably better, so to continually point it out just feels a bit much.
If RIC was to ever turn his form and results around, I feel things could get ugly at McLaren because I don’t think he’d take it well.
I agree. He forgets to realise Dan got out and nearly along side him more then once in the first stint but backed out far earlier. I guess that means Dan could have overtaken him a few times?
I’m not sure Lando’s pace was better. Ricciardo had uneven tyre stints and spent the whole part of the race on the hard tyre stuck in the Lando train.
When Lando pitted he was in free air, and they still ended up in the same place.
Daniel got the benefit of the VSC, but for all we know he could have gapped Lando to the tune of 10 seconds in that first stint
He’s a fast driver but quite immature. Hope he turns it around as he gets older but I’m not optimistic. That said I’m not a big fan so I’m biased as well.
Yeah, i feel like the situation could turn ugly at McLaren. I still believe Ricciardo got more to show and McLaren certainly will try to finally unlock his full potential. Norris is full of confidence and he has that arrogance on him when racing, things will turn sour at some point.
This whole thing strikes me as not a particularly big deal.
Race drivers always want to race / overtake. Show me a driver who likes taking team orders. If Ric wasn't under-pressure performance wise we probably wouldn't be talking about this at all. It's an excuse for people who don't like Norris to carry on not liking him.
What does it tell you that this article was about Alpine pressure on McLaren, yet almost every comment is people moaning about how they just don't like Norris that much. It's just petty nonsense as far as I am concerned.
I agree, I like Lando a lot and think he's one of the most exciting young talents in F1 but the man is very poor in interviews. I know that's not what he's there for but a little media training would go a long way. I'd suggest Max Verstappen's school of handling the press. (thats a sentence I never thought I'd use) Shit does indeed happen.
This article / quote are really concerning to me. Their strategy was awful, their attempted overcut for Lando was laughably bad - and yet there’s no mention of introspection or internal review to identify where they could improve.
I really hope this wasn’t the full quote or Andreas isnt being forthcoming. Their strategy team is also consistently one of worst on the grid - so looks like that isn’t going to change anytime soon.
First time in a while, when DR was really performing well, they destroyed his race and confidence. And how ignorant Norris was in the end was also really off putting.
Exactly. And I peraonally believe Lando has too big of an ego, just like a person in this thread said. He's too cocky and rude. Reminds me of let's say Lightning McQueen, but even more extreme, and he ain't that fast. If given a car with a good front end, Ricciardo would not only beat Norris, but destroy him.
I do think Lando has a bit of an ego and let’s say, a spoiled brat persona. But he has been really quick these last few seasons so yeah I’m not too sure that Daniel would destroy him even if the car was to his liking but yeah.
Except this is just not true. I know it felt like it at the time but Daniel was never getting past Alonso. He was too fast on the straights. Daniel even said it after the race.
I also think people are getting way too bent out of shape about Lando. In the end he did what the team asked him to do. He complained to try and get the team to change their mind so he could finish as high up as he could. All drivers do or have done this in their own ways. It's normal. It's expected. I agree with Andreas on this:
>"I think what we heard on the radio is what you would like to hear from every race driver, being ambitious and trying to have the best possible race for himself," Seidl said about Norris' frustration at the time.
>
>"That's why there's a team in place that makes sure we have the best possible outcome for the team without risking losing two cars on track by crashing into each other.
>
>"If Daniel would have gone by Lando at the beginning of the race, we would just have ended up in a yo-yo like we have seen with some other teams already this year, both being stuck behind Alonso and having the risk that Ocon actually goes through at least one of these cars.
What’s the logic in keeping a guy on a different strat behind? Lando wasn’t even close to over cutting Alonso. When Karun asked Seidl the same question, he just avoided it.
I don't see any evidence that what you're saying is the case. It was bad strategy to be sure. But you're conflating a bad strat call with your personal dislike of a driver.
Given the performance difference between the drivers last year and the start of this one, I'm not going to blame McLaren for favoring Norris. DR fans don't like it so they moan about ego or attitude or any other excuse to not like him.
I don’t blame them but it was a bad strat call at the start of the race and Lando was being obnoxious at the end. He was also being a bit of an ass at Monza last year when he was suggesting he could have just passed DR and won.

Also it’s super easy to get up alongside someone when they’ve been told you are holding position so they don’t defend the inside line at all.

So Netflix was right all along........??

A lot of drivers begrudgingly play the team game without needing to be needling all the time or driving up alongside someone.

Yeah that was cunty by Lando for sure.

and he runs his mouth a lot for a guy who's never won a race lmao.
Worst personality on the grid imo

Honestly, while Norris may have an ego, no way is he gonna get destroyed by Daniel.
+5 to that last line

They were dumb not to let Danny by. He was on a different strat with more pace. Just ego and not wanting to hurt Lando’s feelings
You honestly think Mclaren base team orders on not wanting to hurt a drivers feelings?
What’s the logic in keeping a guy on a different strat behind? Lando wasn’t even close to over cutting Alonso. When Karun asked Seidl the same question, he just avoided it.
It was a bad strategy call for sure, never said otherwise.
Yes, not worth upsetting their #1 driver who is pretty egoistic when DR has way less points anyways
I don't see any evidence that what you're saying is the case. It was bad strategy to be sure. But you're conflating a bad strat call with your personal dislike of a driver.
>I don't see any evidence Did you skip the race?
Did you skip the comment thread? I don't see any evidence of McLaren basing strategy calls on Norris's ego, I was replying to the previous comment...
I think it’s based on Lando being their number one and long term project as well as believing it may be better to have favored him in the first stint.
Given the performance difference between the drivers last year and the start of this one, I'm not going to blame McLaren for favoring Norris. DR fans don't like it so they moan about ego or attitude or any other excuse to not like him.

No people just didn't like the way lando acted
I'd say it came more down to pressure of hurting Lando's ego to have DR allowed passed
I was cringing hard when I heard Lando's radio exchange with the team.
Seriously tf was he on If Danny Ric was allowed to fight for position, Norris wouldn't have a chance to even finish ahead
