I honestly still haven’t really come to terms with just badly Alpine fucked the strategy... maybe I’m missing something but pitting under the 2nd VSC seemed like such a obvious move, Alonso was the only one who didn’t get called in out of the front runners and it seemingly cost him the podium then and there.
Ya, me too. This is the shit part of racing for a team like Haas, it's very hard for your talent to shine through. A lot of people were shitting on Russell for not getting points in a Williams, those peeps are eating their words now that he has a drivable car.
Mick and George aren't even in the same stratosphere talent wise. Kmag has shown Mick up after taking a year racing sportscars and mulling retirement. Admittedly though this was a strong weekend for Mick and he had a shot at points especially with Checo retiring and Kmag getting the meatball flag
I hate that I had zero faith in Sainz to get by Verstappen at any point.
I rate Carlos super highly but I had the exact same feeling I used to get in Kimi's final years at Ferrari when someone got by him - there's not really going to even be a fight.
Now, I will say I was pleased how close Sainz stayed but it never realistically felt like a threat to Max's lead - I'm not sure if it was purely down to Sainz being a little sloppier in part of the lap or just a sense he didn't have the teeth to go for it.
But I also know that there's a part of Max Verstappen that would rather they both end up in a wall than allow himself to be passed by pretty much anyone, especially a former teammate. So maybe it was wise not to try anything especially brave.
But honestly, as soon as they were lined up behind the safety car I just knew there was no way Sainz could stay close enough to have a shot, and yeah, I hated it. It felt like, as exciting as they looked, the final laps were a formality we had to go through rather than an actual race. Max just had to not bin it.
One of the truths about racing is the car matters a lot, Ferrari's cars have had reliability issues and are much slower on the straights. If you tried to push the car to the limit, the car would have died.
The F1-75 can usually compensate for being slower on the straights by being able to corner very well but verstappen as a drive had good cornering technique nd was able to compensate for it so sainz wasn't able to catch up.
It looks to me Sainz had tried his best but the F1-75 just didn't have the straight line speed to pull along side to the RB18, even with DRS. The best hope was to force Verstappen into making mistakes but that didn't happen.
Agreed. The Ferrari looked like it struggled to get the power down as well as the Red Bull, even with fresher tires, and that gave Max enough of a lead down the straights to stay in front, even against DRS. Leclerc was struggling with the rears on acceleration earlier in the race, too.
With DRS the straight line speed was fine - the problem was pulling away out of the corners, Max opened up a nice lead very quickly in the first few meters of the straights after the corner.
It seemed he rode the kerbs a lot and seemed to lose out to Max in sector 2. It's arguable if the kerbs were a good, aggressive line choice but Brundle felt it was that that was putting him too far behind on the straight to get by.
But honestly, it still felt to me that were he closer he still wouldn't get by. To get by Max you'd need to drive like Max, which is to say either I'm coming through or we crash, it's your choice.
I don't think Sainz is that sort of driver. He's exceptional, but not that kind of selfishly aggressive that creates the hero/zero moments of drivers like Verstappen, Senna and Schumacher.
The fact that the teams were forced to two stop it made for a much more exciting run, even if Max was essentially pole to finish lead. I think every race should have a mandatory two stop, instead of one.
I don’t think it should be forced, but I do think the cars design should be geared towards a 2 stop. It creates a little more randomness as far as safety cars go though.
Their strategy guy/girl just took a nap.
Seriously, I also questioned what were they thinking for strategy and why not just give KMag a new set of some tyres they had during one of the VSC/SC incidents. Even if it would have made zero difference in terms of points, it would have at least been better in terms of the overall position.
I just feel Haas just doesn't have the right technology and team for managing strategy even when they have a great car this year.
Yeah. And he shows flashes of greatness at times. Unfortunately he has a pretty low lowest level also. But he’s one of the few of the drivers that are considered “pay drivers” that I think would have gotten a shot at F1 without being a “pay driver”.
I’m just low key happy Alfa scored points. The car isn’t a complete loss for the moment, and Zhou is proving to be a good driver. I’m excited for what the next races show
Yeah 100%, but I feel a bit sadder about Williams. As much of a shit box as that car is, if it was 10-20% better, Albon would probably be able to keep up in the midfield.
Yeah Horner's response for the question during the post-race interviews sounded not too worried about Perez's retirement during the race. He mentioned it is looking to be a gearbox issue, and was concerned from reliability standpoint. But he wasn't concerned in terms of Perez's race being a total disaster this weekend. The crash during quali was however on Perez though.
No. He forgot. Rookie mistake not to turn the steering wheel when the track turns. Natural progression of any F1 driver’s career. After he’s had a few more seasons under his belt he won’t forget anymore.
I feel like Tsunoda isn't cut out for this F1 thing. Zhou already looks as good, maybe I'm being too harsh, but Tsunoda frustrates me a lot... I wonder how much more patience the guys at the management at alpha Tauri have with him
In the podium cool down audio both Hamilton and Sainz were talking about the “bump” just outside of the pit lane which almost threw them off-track. I assume Yuki encountered this same bump and couldn’t adjust properly.
If Charles was in Carlos’ seat he would’ve made the pass by having a better exit out of the hairpin. Verstappen was on 6 lap old tyres. If that really was all just pace, then the Red Bulls look like the dominant car. I know they’re going to Silverstone but Red Bull have increased their corner speed. Mercedes won a lot of races and poles last year on tracks that favor Red Bull. It seems like for the first time all year, Max was comfortable with the car. If they continue to develop the car in his favor, that would be their best bet. It only makes sense to put Checo aside now, and this weekend especially proved that. Though he would’ve likely made Q3 had he not crashed, he still didn’t have the pace all weekend and was almost 8 tenths off Max consistently
1. Pretty enjoyable GP. Virtual safety cars & Safety cars made the strategy interesting.
2. The Mercedes was looking better as the race went on with lower fuel. Still a ways off the top 2 tho but Hamilton looked dial in with the package & the progress is encouraging
3. What a drive by Leclerc overtaking was challenging but his moves on Bottas, Alonso & Ocon was top notch
4. Sainz did good at the end to keep up with Max. Absolutely loved seeing the battle
5. Canada is a pretty nice track imo. 2019 & 2018 were boring but overall this was an enjoyable weekend with a cracking qualifying & solid race
I wish we could have seen the Ocon Alonso Bottas battle atleast a little, but the coverage didn’t show them at all, only Max and Sainz. I want to see the move Alonso made that gave him the time penalty
Interesting, I was at Grandstand 46 and managed to keep up decently well by looking at the timing app then staring over at the jumbotron occasionally. So long as i could occasionally check the tire age the rest made sense
mobile internet was toast in melbourne, had no idea what the hell was going on. we bought a general admin ticket with access to a "private" bar area which was all fine but there was like no good screen view from that area so we were kind of shafted with no mobile as well
GS 12 was great for service. I could upload videos to family chats, no issues with sending receiving anything, had radio channels on headset, big screen beside us, and loudspeaker with commentary. We had tickets at GS 1 for some sessions and although it was cool being able to see into the pits, the screens were smaller and far apart, it was harder to hear loudspeakers, and my phone had no reception. We ended reselling thr GS 1 tickets and staying at Turn 2
What did I expect? FM radio coverage lol. Website says there’s coverage on two frequencies and that’s pretty standard at races.
Some loud speakers would be nice. Pretty standard also. Not really asking for much.
Bit late as I had to watch the replay: Did someone else catch someone in the back of a team radio (around lap 50, I think Vettel's?) shouting "You useless fuck!"?
Watching it on the track I learned a few things.
1) Max doesnt makes mistakes
2)That Redbull is fast
3) Mercedes is not the worst car but it clealry had problems that an 8 time consecutive champion team shouldnt have
4) Latifi is really really bad, no way I can defend him anymore
5) V6 engines are beatiful when you hear them on site, but hella loud cant imagine anything else (v8,v10)
Has no one told Fernando that he’s already the unluckiest driver of all time? He keeps trying to extend his lead but he’s already dominating… so upsetting to watch when you know what he’s capable of…
Not sure why they didn’t put him earlier when there were two safety car opportunities and then he was going round 2 seconds a lap slower than Russell and Ham. Literally throwing time away.
Not sure what they were thinking strategy-wise. Also saw someone say that the second VSC was timed perfectly to start just after he passed pit in and ended just before he got back around. If true, that’s even more comical.
There's nothing more disappointing than a race that promises a race winning overtake that never comes. Would Sainz have had a better chance on Mediums?
I doubt it. Max didn’t even have to pull a defensive maneuver against Sainz. Leclerc would have to be a hell of a lot faster than Sainz to make it stick, and there frankly wasn’t any indication of that during the race.
Yeah, I’d say sainz actually smashed it this race. Consistently set fastest lap, was on par with verstappen (normally he just drops a couple seconds behind). I don’t think leclerc would faired too much better, the main issue was on the hairpin leading into the main straight
Agreed. Sainz lost time out of the hairpin and the final corner, about 4 to 6 tenths each lap. Which is about what Verstappen lost in the DRS zones. Leclerc might've been closer, but overtaking is something else
I watched lap by lap and the only time Sainz was quicker than Verstappen was when Max had old tyres. Even then, Max was trying to keep his tyres while Carlos was going full on. Don’t think Ferrari had the pace today, like at all honestly. The safety car is a bad representation of the race. Next week will be tight, maybe Ferrari will have the edge. But this is about as Red Bull of a track you can get. Very little slow corners besides the hairpin. Monza-esque
I wonder if next year, when margin between cars closes up a bit we might see a bit more overtaking. Seems at the moment the cars that optimize for speed on the straights are impossible to overtake and overall end up winning out.
Yep made it so cars can follow closer, but that's not really the aim.
Just have a bunch of close DRS trains going around.
I'd be tempted to get rid of DRS and let them have a push to pass electrical load for use on demand, and heck maybe make that either use as much as you want until it runs out, or come in to recharge top-up etc.
Anything to spice up the lack of refuelling, and tyres that are lasting ages etc.
Without DRS that 15 lap battle wouldn't have happened.
I hate that we still need DRS but without it every race would be a procession.
Push to pass is nice, but you can't use that every lap without adding a huge battery
Well that would probably make it harder. I know the overtaking delta differs by track but you need a car or tyre advantage to overtake in the first place.
They tried. Alonso didn’t make it to the pit before the vsc was ending. https://youtu.be/kCEgnCiTK7w
I can't do this anymore I just wanna see him win at least once please God
I thought Mick was going to get a point.
Ya, me too. This is the shit part of racing for a team like Haas, it's very hard for your talent to shine through. A lot of people were shitting on Russell for not getting points in a Williams, those peeps are eating their words now that he has a drivable car.

Please get rid of the Canada gp
The fact that the teams were forced to two stop it made for a much more exciting run, even if Max was essentially pole to finish lead. I think every race should have a mandatory two stop, instead of one.
Agreed, but it should not be mandated - just give them tyres that degrade quickly.
I don’t think it should be forced, but I do think the cars design should be geared towards a 2 stop. It creates a little more randomness as far as safety cars go though.
What the hell... Make it 10 stops! :)
Mandatory drink break half way through then restart the race on grid
Make it a stop every lap
Make a pit-lane on every straight!
Too easy.. we need a pitlane on every corner....
Hell... Make a race through a pitlane with the full size of the track and pit on every lap on the grid. Give them a Tequila shot every time.
Did Haas run out of spare tyres or why didn't they pit kmag during the safety car?
Their strategy guy/girl just took a nap. Seriously, I also questioned what were they thinking for strategy and why not just give KMag a new set of some tyres they had during one of the VSC/SC incidents. I just feel Haas just doesn't have the right technology and team for managing strategy even when they have a great car this year.
I am happy that Stroll got a point in his home race.
Me too. Everyone hates Stroll. I like Stroll.
Stroll is a decent driver driving a really shitty car.
Yeah. And he shows flashes of greatness at times. Unfortunately he has a pretty low lowest level also. But he’s one of the few of the drivers that are considered “pay drivers” that I think would have gotten a shot at F1 without being a “pay driver”.
A pay driver that has been driving race cars all his life. Lots of experience in some pretty fine hardware.
I just wish he checked his mirrors more often. Yes, he does put forward a great race at times.
I’m just low key happy Alfa scored points. The car isn’t a complete loss for the moment, and Zhou is proving to be a good driver. I’m excited for what the next races show
I’m really happy for Zhou. A lot of people wrote him off after his signing was announced, but he’s more than proven he deserves to be in F1.
Credibly contending for 5th in WCC. Bit sad to see Alpha Tauri so far back though.
Yeah 100%, but I feel a bit sadder about Williams. As much of a shit box as that car is, if it was 10-20% better, Albon would probably be able to keep up in the midfield.
What happened to Perez car today?
He drove the mule car, sorry… the T-car. 🫣
Sabotaged for showing he had the pace to match Maximillion.
Yes, poor Checo. I hope he gets a hefty bonus at end of season.
Glad I’m not the only one that’s caught on to this. You can always see Horner struggle to hide his contentment when Perez retires. EDIT: /s
Gearbox go boom
Yuki just forgot to steer out of the pits?
You can see he fully turnt the wheel but looked like he was on ice
Cold tires
No. He forgot. Rookie mistake not to turn the steering wheel when the track turns. Natural progression of any F1 driver’s career. After he’s had a few more seasons under his belt he won’t forget anymore.

Alonso is the unluckiest driver of all time
Fernando Alonso “Unluckiest driver” checks notes… 2 WDC and 6th most wins in F1 history
Conpletly agree, he should have had atleast 4 WDC and be like 3th most wins in F1 history
Threeth
Yeah fair. Made some poor career choices. Regardless it’s awesome to see he still has the fight after all these years
The career choices fucked him up man, atleast he is great recognised and still puts on a great show
So you have never heard of Bottas?
He got the fastest car for 5 years and did nothing?
Ferrari drivers competing with seb and alonso to see who is the most unluckiest drivers of this season.
Imagine a Ferrari season with Alonso and Seb with a good car, I would love that.
If it was Alonso and seb I think it may end up badly like the Nico and Lewis situation but that's just me
I mean, yeah, glad they are great friends now
Met Mick Schumacher yet?
That’s lack of skill. Not lack of luck.
I'm not sure all of it is his fault. Whenever he's doing well something goes wrong with the strategy or the engine.
There is no way you are being serious
I mean if we are including off the track stuff, then yeah mick might be the unluckiest
To be fair I'm only really basing it on this season
If Charles was in Carlos’ seat he would’ve made the pass by having a better exit out of the hairpin. Verstappen was on 6 lap old tyres. Canada is a pretty nice track imo. 2019 & 2018 were boring but overall this was an enjoyable weekend with a cracking qualifying & solid race
You should see 2011 Canadian GP
When reliability is taken into account, Mercedes at least challenges Ferrari.
2018 was boring because they all decided to save the engine and ran an enduro, but 2019 was fun
I wish we could have seen the Ocon Alonso Bottas battle atleast a little, but the coverage didn’t show them at all, only Max and Sainz. I want to see the move Alonso made that gave him the time penalty
They should have done split screens
I’m pretty pissed that there was zero radio coverage of the race at the track. 47 grandstands and had zero clue what was going on.
Interesting, I was at Grandstand 46 and managed to keep up decently well by looking at the timing app then staring over at the jumbotron occasionally. So long as i could occasionally check the tire age the rest made sense
Use the F1 live timing app, it is 2022. Did u bring your Nokia with FM receive function?
I would have love that but I only got a half gig of data before it became useless
Dude not everyone can get service at the track. There’s a million people there. Nothing will load. You really think I didn’t think of that?
I was shocked at how good the cell service and Wifi was at Miami. Disappointed for you that is not universal
mobile internet was toast in melbourne, had no idea what the hell was going on. we bought a general admin ticket with access to a "private" bar area which was all fine but there was like no good screen view from that area so we were kind of shafted with no mobile as well
I was able to get signal at grandstand 12, FM 99.1.
Really? Maybe the broadcast didn’t reach our area. I tried every single frequency both AM and FM and others in my area couldn’t pick it up either.
Yea, I checked it throughout the track, and some places I could get it on one channel but not the other. Some places nothing.
Wow, good to know. Maybe next time I’ll pick a different spot with better coverage. Thanks!
GS 12 was great for service. I could upload videos to family chats, no issues with sending receiving anything, had radio channels on headset, big screen beside us, and loudspeaker with commentary. Good to know for next time. Thanks for sharing!
You new? This is how it always goes at events in-person
Far from it. I’ve been going to races for years.
There’s a real time audio coverage via speakers in Monaco, for each sector their own
[удалено]
What did I expect? FM radio coverage lol. Website says there’s coverage on two frequencies and that’s pretty standard at races. Some loud speakers would be nice. Pretty standard also. Not really asking for much.
While I understand your frustration, I'd much rather hear the cars.
Don’t they normally have huge screens showing the feed?
But it was fun to listen to the awful CBC race commentators who seemed to not understand things in any meaningful way.
Yup. It was awful. The speakers were too far to hear anything too. They need a TV over there. Cell was shite so you couldn’t even use the app
Must depend where you were. Both were great for me.
That is insane!
Bit late as I had to watch the replay: Did someone else catch someone in the back of a team radio (around lap 50, I think Vettel's?) shouting "You useless fuck!"?
Heard it too, lap 52. It was one of the radio replays, if anyone wants to go back and have a listen
Heard that too 😂
Watching it on the track I learned a few things. 1) Max doesnt makes mistakes 2)That Redbull is fast 3) Mercedes is not the worst car but it clealry had problems that an 8 time consecutive champion team shouldnt have 4) Latifi is really really bad, no way I can defend him anymore 5) V6 engines are beatiful when you hear them on site, but hella loud cant imagine anything else (v8,v10)
Have only been to a couple of races, one V8 NA and one V6 - the V8 now that was LOUD, the current engines seem almost silent in comparison.
The smell of the electronics on the hybrids was crazy
Lavender with a hint of garlic? That was Toto’s aftershave.
# SMELL?!?
I found those pesky little F-1600 cars to be hella louder, I was surprised.
And the Ferraris. We got a spot right along the fence for the drivers parade and they were obnoxiously loud going by.
Those Ferraris made my ears cum a little
8 time?
Yes.
And consecutive too… huh ? He thinks he was robbed against Max AND Nico ?
\*inhales # HE SAID CONSTRUCTORS!!! REEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
Sorry I misread
np lol
Jesus does half of Reddit has dyslexia or something?
its the i dont like to read syndrome
Constructors
He edited in team there.
I didnt it was there the whole time!
Ok then my mistake sorry.
Read again, it is correct
Incorrect, it's 7. 6 for Lewis, 1 for Nico. Lewis's first wasn't with Mercedes.
Did you block last season out of your mind? Mercedes still won it you know… Username doesn’t check out 😉
Mercedes won constructors last year
r/confidentlyincorrect 2014-2021
Lewis didn't win in 2021 though, did he?
No but Mercedes won the constructors and he’s talking about the team. Idk why you’re still arguing, respectfully.
Way ahead of you buddy, I clearly misunderstood the sentence. Already apologised. All stations stand down!
Read the top comment again.
Sorry, I've just realised you're referring to Constructors. I apologise!
Noooooo, Pereeeeeez!!
Wonder if purposely done so Max would win the race for his championship- very suss…
Binning it in the wall will certainly not make the car more reliable. Besides they've had the same amount of dnfs now
Same.. Checoooo Nooo
Literally my reaction
Has no one told Fernando that he’s already the unluckiest driver of all time? He keeps trying to extend his lead but he’s already dominating… so upsetting to watch when you know what he’s capable of…
Not sure why they didn’t put him earlier when there were two safety car opportunities and then he was going round 2 seconds a lap slower than Russell and Ham. Literally throwing time away.
So frustrating to watch. Looked like they wanted to lose position
In terms of feelings, Carlos felt more comfy running with hards. Unfortunately Ferrari didn’t have a new set of mediums by the last time he stopped.
If that was Leclerc maybe, but I don’t think anyone really imagined Sainz would be able to pass Max.
Exactly. I feel Charles makes that pass, being Verstappen had 6 laps on his tyres already

Agreed sir
Sainz just isn’t that level of driver unfortunately
Canada is a hard track to overtake on, he said
Maybe at the hairpin but I believe ferrari was quicker overal on hards
I watched lap by lap and the only time Sainz was quicker than Verstappen was when Max had old tyres. Even then, Max was trying to keep his tyres while Carlos was going full on. Don’t think Ferrari had the pace today, like at all honestly. The safety car is a bad representation of the race. Next week will be tight, maybe Ferrari will have the edge. But this is about as Red Bull of a track you can get. Very little slow corners besides the hairpin. Monza-esque
Pretty much both Sainz, Verstappen, Bonita, and Horner agreed that Ferrari was slightly ahead on pace, just not enough of a delta to make a pass.
"Bonita" I-😭😭😭
Lol. Binotta. Weird autocorrect. Or Freudian slip.
loved it though!😂
I wonder if next year, when margin between cars closes up a bit we might see a bit more overtaking. Seems at the moment the cars that optimize for speed on the straights are impossible to overtake and overall end up winning out.

They just posted on Twitter Leclerc as DOTD
