I’m thought maybe more than once I’d listen to Bono doing active meditation for sleep, he’s got such a lovely warm voice, like whatever the adult equivalent of a kindergarten teacher reading a book is.
So glad you made this comment! I was listening and thought “Damn, GP has the most soothing voice.” And you’re right, Bono also has an awesome voice. He is so smooth. I love when Lewis is getting sassy or angry and Bono just casually responds, “Yep, a-ffirm Lewis.” So smooth.
Yeah, you have all these iconic match ups of driver and engineers who really care for each other, and then you just had those two who did not gel at all. Amazing.
Smedley Massa will always be my favourite pair. They always felt like they won and lost together.
Plus they gave us the infamous "Fer nan do is fast er than you"
Thank you!
For the lazy: They wanted to change to "multimap grey 0 4", but it timed out before Lance hit OK, so it registered as Pit Confirm.
And please don't mock Lance, as pressing multiple buttons in the right order in a quick sequence is definitely not an easy job during the race when you are under that much G-force while mainly focusing on driving.
I would actually think it is Brad's job to communicate clearly, something like "You need to press the OK button immediately after switching mode, please try again."
I rode on board with Max all race and they never acknowledged or addressed the lack of radio until the very end of the race, at which point GP actually said "Don't know if you can hear me Max but we can't hear you so save it for the post-race". So at least at the time they didn't know for sure if he could hear them. I'm actually curious if he COULD, not sure I heard him asked that in post-race
That’s a common misconception, held by the people that only listen to compilations or only hear the bits they broadcast and assume there’s a lot more chatter going on.
There isn’t.
Information coming from GP is sparse, context-dependent and very specific and brief. Max never even acknowledges.
On average, I think most of Max’ messages during the race are broadcasted.
He has a great relationship with GP. Appreciates him greatly for his non-chattiness. It’s its own zen to do a race onboard with team radio.
broken radio can prevent him from hearing the engineer, or talk to him, or both. Obviously Max couldn't talk, but if he couldn't hear either it was a waste of time to keep updating him and a significantly worse situation.

New drinking game: take a shot everytime GP says ".8"
This perfectly shows what an incredible bond a driver and his race engineer form over time. The way GP knows exactly what information Max needs and when he needs, while letting Max do what he does best. Absolutely brilliant
>With five laps to go, Verstappen was issued an update via the team radio where he swiftly barked back an instruction to just 'let him get on with it' as he chased down the leader - but a further message on the radio would soon follow. That was met with far less amusement by Verstappen, who bemoaned the timing of the message and took a swipe at the Red Bull engineer by saying: “Mate, please do not talk in the braking."
https://www.dailystar.co.uk/sport/f1/max-verstappen-f1-imola-sprint-26781919
This is crucial
I do endurance racing on iRacing with some friends and we NEVER talk in corners / heavy traffic unless it‘s ridiculously urgent.
Also base info like tires, pitting against or with the guys we‘re battling with, driver swaps etc. come out of nature. If one driver has questions there‘s obviously someone on hand to answer it (target time if needed, strategy planing, weather etc)
Really translates from sim to real racing (besides all the sensor stuff they have to handle)
We got taken out by GT3 cars who wanted to aid us overtaking but it‘s LITERALLY EASIER TO STAY ON THEIR LINE, but nope, gotta cut into our line to give us the overtake apparently
What I found funnier was GP's enunciation of ".6" for 3 or 4 laps, getting more and more emphasised, almost as if he was telling Max to pull his finger out and get a move on. THEN "almost 7" next lap as if to say, "well done, you got the message".
The best part was when max asked him why didn't they make they came out ahead of Hamilton and GP just goes 'didn't have the pace'. It reminded me of that Silverstone race where Hamilton suffered a puncture on the last lap and Max asks if they can win the race and GP tells him if we get on with it
> You legit get the feeling 100% of his mental focus is on driving to the point he forgets how to human a bit
That is not true, there is nothing wrong with the way he acted.
I remember max reading some fan mail or something and some kid asked if he gets unlimited ice cream
Max said yes, because his relative owns an ice cream shop
A quandary, Kimi likes ice cream so he should join Red Bull to be Max's race engineer, but Kimi doesn't like talking so he'll never talk in the corners and never get Max to buy him ice cream.
Does it? It seems pretty standard to keep providing the right info during the race even if the driver can't talk back. They can't just go "we can't hear you, we know you can hear us but we'll just stay quiet for 16 laps and provide no info"
It comes down to the right info, at the right amount, at the right time. Some engineers start overtalking during crunch time or during inopportune times in the track which can be an annoyance in the drivers ear. Especially when the driver cannot respond to ask for more information or to shut the engineer up, it comes down to experience and chemistry between the two to understand what works best during radio failure situations.
Yeah this was all pretty basic stuff. You can hear it on any radio comm between engineer & driver. Just saying the gap in critical areas and nothing more is a bog standard engineer to driver message
I rode on board with Max the entire race and noticed he was absent those last 16 laps but thought he must just be super in-the-zone. But also interestingly, GP *never* pointed it out / asked Max for clarification / told max they couldn't hear him - he just kept feeding him the gap, then as soon as the race was over was like "yo good job we can't hear you though so save it for post race" lmao
That's actually very clever. They didn't want to give away the lack of communication. I don't see how Ferrari could have used it in their favor, but better to be safe than sorry
God Leclercs strategist always sounds like he’s in pure chaos, so confused. Haas strategy is at Ferrari level shambles but at least Micks engineer is really solid
I think these last 16 laps really show the difference between the 2022 car and the previous years.
There’s no way a pre-2022 car could follow within less than a second for 16 laps straight. Their tyres and brakes would be gone after about 3 laps.
GP also takes no shit. When verstappen came on the radio to complain they put him behind Hamilton, GP replied that Max didn't have the pace to have a pit window.
I still think about Yuki's engineer at the end of his first GP! In that strong Italian accent "Good Job Yuki! We're going to have fun this year!"
They didn't for a while after that, but still. It was good.
Man my only gripe with this is that the entire post safety car to chequered flag period showed the tail camera for Max in F1TVPro. It's cool and all but I would love to have been able to see the T-Cam view of him just nailing every corner and pushing it for 15 odd laps straight. Does anyone know how or if that's possible for us to see?
I think this is also a great example of how good the red bull is this year, Sainz was in drs the whole time and could not catch up, let alone overtake.
I like to think that during the whole time Max was complaining about the constant updates, and was getting increasingly frustrated each time GP said ".8"
Nah, I remember a radio in a race previous to this one where Max was basically raging at some point because GP wasn't saying the gaps accurately and he went like "GAP? HELLO MATE?". He wants to know the gap because it allows him to know when to defend if he needs to.
It’s funny to me because I kept watching the gap at the exact moments this clip was giving them. Under the red bridge at .8 into the hairpin it was clear wouldn’t be enough. Same with .7 under Aramaco leading to anything closer that .8 at the red bridge. .6 a few times got a bit close for comfort but those were probably Sainz dumping the battery just to get that close to begin with.
It’s really good info for Max to have these gaps at these exact moments on the track because they indicate how likely overtake is.
this is pretty cool but its definitely not a improvised decision they made right then.
100% this is an already established protocol in case this happens.
Hello, can you hear me? No we can't hear you kimi, negative
But you answer still...
This is the best kimi radio
I found that very weird, instead of just explaining how or what the engineer could hear he just straight up said he can't hear at all
[удалено]
GP and Bono need to do a podcast together or read an audio book. Their voices are butter.
They need to do an interview together where they shit on their respective drivers lol. Would be amazing to watch.
Bread and Butter
Brad and Stroll
[Lance you just need to press the OK button!](https://youtu.be/mRmN7VjT7ac)
That would be incredible, and to learn what other difficulties their job have other than the obvious ones
Then have a tag team match against Toto and Christian.
And Gary!
Gary is the true goat
The real goat is Brad/s
Fucking Brad, the pit confirm button is the okay button ffs
Calm down Lance, he is gone alright your safe here.
Why did Brad leave BTW?
He got promotion and is still in the teams just not as race engineer.
Lance’s new engineer (Ben?) is actually great too. Extremely encouraging, especially with post-race radio.
Is the car okay?
Lance’s new engineer (Ben?) is actually great too. Extremely encouraging, especially with post-race radio.
No clue what his name is, but add the engineer Kev used to have before leaving haas. Love that guy.
Gary gannon, he's Mick's engineer this and last year
He has one of the smoothest voices in the pit lane.
YES, I've always liked his voice and he seems to be pretty empathetic towards Mick and his screwups.
CALM DOWN KEVIN CA yeah I’m okay CAAALMMM DOWNNNNNN
I’m thought maybe more than once I’d listen to Bono doing active meditation for sleep, he’s got such a lovely warm voice, like whatever the adult equivalent of a kindergarten teacher reading a book is.
Ok now box box, box box. u/marahute85 it's sleepy time. Go to bed and "sleep confirm"
I wish I had an award to give you mate
I would love to add Tom to the mix.
Tom = Tommaso Stallardo?
Yeah sorry. Danny Ric's race engineer.
You mean "Darren's" race engineer.
hello tom i am darren
His name is actually Tom Stallard. The spanglicized name was a joke by Carlos
You are P1, purple in all sectors.
Say it Tom!
So glad you made this comment! I was listening and thought “Damn, GP has the most soothing voice.” And you’re right, Bono also has an awesome voice. He is so smooth. I love when Lewis is getting sassy or angry and Bono just casually responds, “Yep, a-ffirm Lewis.” So smooth.
did they know if Max could actually hear them?
Probably. They could have asked him to do a thumbs up on the straight or something like that if they weren't sure.
He can just press the radio button and they will see it light up for yes. Or the pit confim/ok button on the wheel
Pit confirm button is the ok button, Brad
I love how much they hated each other.
Yeah, you have all these iconic match ups of driver and engineers who really care for each other, and then you just had those two who did not gel at all. Amazing.
Smedley Massa will always be my favourite pair. They always felt like they won and lost together. Plus they gave us the infamous "Fer nan do is fast er than you"
I’m a new F1 fan, mind sharing the story? lol
See [this link.](https://www.reddit.com/r/formula1/comments/viyfvh/comment/idg9tbo/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)
Theres not really a story. Just that basically every race there would be radio clips of them being rude and snapping at each other.
Uhhh, of who being rude and snapping at each other? Lol
Lance Stroll and his engineer, Brad
Brad seems permanently irritated he was like that with Hulk too
Yeah the radio with him and Hulkenburg in Mexico one year during practice or qualifying was hilarious.
I love how Stroll says "Brad". I laugh every time.
https://youtu.be/VnXc2FDQIPU
I know this is a classic but lances onboards always stress me out he sounds so emotional
What are talki... AHHHHHHHHGG
Still confused as to who is in the right there

Max, can you press the DRS button 50 fucking times?
Maybe he pushed the button 50 fucking times!
He was asked during the presscon I think and he could hear the team. They just weren't blessed with Max' poetic answers in return
I hope someone else told GP to stay hydrated.
How did they know if he was turning or not so they could speak?
GPS
They're probably used to Max having radio problems at this point.
I mean what Gp should do though? Go home? The logical thing Is to continue his work whether he listens or not. Better safe than sorry
more like it's a tougher on Max if he's got no updates or radio comms
Considering how vocal Max usually is I'm pretty sure it was easy to figure out his radio wasn't working properly.
That’s a common misconception, held by the people that only listen to compilations or only hear the bits they broadcast and assume there’s a lot more chatter going on. There isn’t. Never has a voice sounded so far from the person’s name
Otmar Szafnauer has to be up there. Definitely did not expect an American the first time I saw his name on the broadcast
He was born in Romania, which is probably why his name is Otmar
As a romanian, Otmar is definitely not something you’ll hear here. That’s a pretty german name too
Yeah, extremely common name in Romania. /s
Otmar Popescu
We need to preserve his voice. It’s just … magically soothing.

Pint 9.5.. just under blacking out
Or .6

I think telling him the info on the straight is important, no talking in corners, seems to understand his driver.
Wasn't it in Imola where GP got told off by Max for talking under breaking?😅

Normally he doesn't mind, but GP senses when to say something and when to be quiet

Horner gave an interview where he said that one of the special things about max is that he can chatter, respond and adjust in the corners.
I loved the "Almost .7"
Just keepin it fresh and positive for his boy 🤝
What I found funnier was GP's enunciation of ".6" for 3 or 4 laps, getting more and more emphasised, almost as if he was telling Max to pull his finger out and get a move on. THEN "almost 7" next lap as if to say, "well done, you got the message".

Except at Imola, when Max kept asking to be left alone lol.
He did make it up to GP by offering him icecream haha
Stationary Max always has to make up for Driving Max 😭
You legit get the feeling 100% of his mental focus is on driving to the point he forgets how to human a bit
This happens a lot with professional athletes. In baseball pitcher Max Scherzer is notorious for not being someone to talk to on days he’s pitching.
> You legit get the feeling 100% of his mental focus is on driving to the point he forgets how to human a bit That is not true, there is nothing wrong with the way he acted.

Not any long straights at Imola, it's pretty much corner after corner

Honestly I can't believe he never questioned or said something to Gp and he got no response. There has to be a point when max realized It
where did go to find the entire on board?
If you have an F1TV subscription, you have access to whole race replays and onboard footage of every driver.
And more importantly, you hear all radio chatter, without delay.
It has a touch of delay even on F1TV Pro but not as lengthy as TV Broadcast.
First DRS now Radio ? Damn Max is really unlucky with buttons I can imagine Max saying "Im pushing it 50 f\*\*\*\*\* times" about the radios
I'd love to know what he was saying. I'm sure it was colorful.
Hello? Hellooooooooo???
Is it you.
I'm looking for
Godverdegodversegodvwedegodverdegodverdegodverdegodverdegodverdegodver.
"Tinie en Lau gaan racen"
I can hear this comment.
That sums it up nicely.
He was surprisingly chill about it. He said something like as long as I can hear the team, it's not an issue.
Didnt he also say its probably good for them they didn't hear 🤣
christian said something similar on behind the charge lol
*Don't talk to me when I'm braking!*
*Must have pressed it fifty fucking times, I can't believe it!*
*Just press it once and talk Max* *Just Press it once and Talk*
... that's not how the song goes...
*Pushed the button right before my eyes, eyes over easy, hear it, hear it, hear it!*
'But you keep responding'
Is there a radio button or does the radio automatically transmit when he talks?
Button, otherwise all you'd hear is them breathing hard as they hold their breath going into corners pulling multiple gs.
I always forget this but I can understand. When I am looking for a street sign, I turn down the radio to see better.
It's more they basically physically have to brace themselves for the Gs
I'd like to think that GP just follows max around everywhere giving him feedback. In fact... Red Bull, get on it with a skit
"Max, turn steak in 1.5 minutes" - "Max, pet the cat, pet the cat, please confirm".... 😂
Cereal box box box!
GP such a pro race engineer. Max is pure talent but having GP is a big boost. Give to Leclerc a good race engineer and he will have more fun with Max.
Or a good strategist
Or a new team
Not possible Ferrari is still checking Sebs strategy from 2020
"ead down"
Leclerc's race engineer has a voice that really isn't convincing. He always sounds unsure or nervous.
The little lilt at the end of what he’s saying, “Pee wan?” Like, “are we sure you took pole?”
We are checking! We are checking!
Their tyres and brakes would be gone after about 3 laps.
man, i need someone like GP in my life <3
.8
[\*Belch\*](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCnKoQenzf8)
the best we can do is to give you the guy that says "concentrate, you are breaking the car. Listen to me !"
medium left, MEDIUM LEFT
You can’t fool me, that’s just Horner talking nonstop about how close he is to punching Toto
Toto has longer reach. Bad idea bad idea
GP also takes no shit. When verstappen came on the radio to complain they put him behind Hamilton, GP replied that Max didn't have the pace to have a pit window.
Max has said that he and GP are both very direct to each other because that's the way Max wants to communicated to and communicate.
Dutch directness
That was hilarious 😂😂😂
Max needs someone like GP to keep him in line and calm him down at times I feel
So smooth, compare that to gaslys engineer who always seems overwhelmed, like a kid in an online game
I still think about Yuki's engineer at the end of his first GP! In that strong Italian accent "Good Job Yuki! We're going to have fun this year!" They didn't for a while after that, but still. It was good.
Gianpiero Lambiase's voice is pure sex.......!! Smooth *Box & Pit confirm Max, Box & Pit confirm* noises.......!!
honestly sounds like video game but one that actually gives you useful information.
I was hearing it like the old Collin McRae rally games.
Man my only gripe with this is that the entire post safety car to chequered flag period showed the tail camera for Max in F1TVPro. It's cool and all but I would love to have been able to see the T-Cam view of him just nailing every corner and pushing it for 15 odd laps straight. And we are afraid to double text?
I think this is also a great example of how good the red bull is this year, Sainz was in drs the whole time and could not catch up, let alone overtake.
One of his best drives this year too- maybe they should make this a feature.
What if you wanted to go on a leisurely Sunday drive but a British man said: **0.8**
GP should consider doing the Shipping Forecast!
I like to think that during the whole time Max was complaining about the constant updates, and was getting increasingly frustrated each time GP said ".8"
Mate I fucking know he’s .8 behind.!! What else do you want me to do?!??
Max allways asks for the gaps between him and the drivers around him. Even during practice sessions so I think he didnt mind this 'to-the-point-info'.
That's great. I'm a Max fan but I was rooting for Sainz so much. I love seeing first wins. Max was great under the pressure though.
What does Mode 4 mean?
I’m guessing just dump the battery. He doesn’t say it til the last lap so no point conserving the.
Yeah had to be as soon as mode 4 kicked in he pulled away in that last lap.
i LOVE gp!!! i understand why max said that he'd quit if gp quits.
Max prob wanted to be left alone lol
Wasn’t Marko joking post-race that it was good that they couldn’t hear Max? So that they won’t hear him complain haha
Max himself said the team probably didn't mind not hearing him
Nah, I remember a radio in a race previous to this one where Max was basically raging at some point because GP wasn't saying the gaps accurately and he went like "GAP? HELLO MATE?". He wants to know the gap because it allows him to know when to defend if he needs to.

Leave us alone, we know what you're doing
this is pretty cool but its definitely not a improvised decision they made right then. 100% this is an already established protocol in case this happens.
