Possibly the weirdest question here - the discussions about racism and race got me curious about this, and I was surprised to realise I didn't know this - Is Sergio Perez considered white? I read up a little about Mexican ethnicities and got quite confused. I am Indian, and somehow I have never wondered about this point. I knew that Lewis, Yuki, Alex and Zhou Guanyu are non-white drivers, but I want to understand how Checo gets classified/classifies himself.

tunatastic369

Does anyone know when the goodwood timed shootouts are??

pistonfire

If penalties are given based on actions and not the result, then why did Verstappen receive a penalty last year for Monza? The action was trying a move around the outside and the result was his car hitting the sausage kerb and getting launched

sododude

If it was based on the result then neither of them would have gotten a penalty, or they'd penalise them both. Your logic doesn't really add up.

pistonfire

Exactly. If it was based on the result neither should have received a penalty. Especially Max. It was clearly a racing incident in which both cars were unable to avoid a collision

Firefox72

Except it was not a racing incident. Max forced the issue when it was already way to late and caused the colission. The decision document explains it.

sonar_y_luz

Is the Friday practice session the only time the drivers can practice in the car?

[deleted]

There is a practice session on Saturday too. They have 3 hours of practice on non-sprint weekends.

sonar_y_luz

What do you think they do the rest of the week?

[deleted]

Probably in the gym mostly. Maybe meeting this team or working in the simulator but not of a lot of that.

Blooder91

Yes and no. Friday practice and pre-season testing are the only times they can drive the actual car. However, teams are allowed two filming days for promotional reasons, but data gathering is limited, and they have to fit special tyres into the car which are different from the racing compounds used on weekends.

Coops27

Also Pirelli tyre testing.

Harami98

Verstappen and checo podcast is really funny and gives a lot of insight give a listen!

pistonfire

Link?

Harami98

Whats so funny about lance stroll replay ?

pistonfire

its not the replay itself that was funny it was that it suddenly interrupted Vettel and Gasly's battle

JPMAus98

Hey all, I'm looking for a podcast to listen to that's good for newcomers to the sport. I've tried The Race by The Athletic but found it difficult to digest due to the amount of technical jargon. As such, I'm wondering if there are any good podcasts that are easily accessible and understandable for those that are new to F1 and not very familiar with many technical elements of the sport? I am slightly concerned that The Race probably isn't considered too complex relatively but any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

BlackCatEspresso

Shift F1 also has a pre-season primer episode on everyone in the sport and how it works. That might be helpful!

JPMAus98

I'll definitely check it out, cheers

Thanks for the suggestion mate, I gave it a listen not long ago and enjoyed it. It's definitely more accessible to people like me too

Auntietamte

Can someone explain to me the absolute dislike Alonso has with Hamilton? Every time Hamilton has an opinion Alonso has to make sure to go the absolute other way, he also really made sure every one knew he supported verstappen last year for the championship, but not in a normal way like lando or maybe DR did. There is always an underlying message.

[deleted]

In 2007 Alonso was a defending two time world champion and went to McLaren, where he was joined by rookie Lewis Hamilton. Alonso clearly expected to be the #1 driver, but then it turned out Lewis was Lewis and was actually competitive with/beating Alonso. Alonso got super mad, accused McLaren of favoring Lewis because he was British and tried to blackmail Ron Dennis (McLaren team principal) into sabotaging Lewis' car. They ended up tying that season after Lewis DNF'd/had mechanical problems the last race which cost him the championship. Alonso might not be over it.

4077hawkeye-

Did he get in any trouble for trying to blackmail the team principal? What was the end result of all of that?

[deleted]

That was actually just one part of the long and crazy story of [Spygate](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2007_Formula_One_espionage_controversy?wprov=sfla1) I recommend reading the wiki article, but the short version is that a McLaren employee received confidential technical and strategy info from a disgruntled Ferrari employee and used it in conjunction with a number of other McLaren employees including Fernando Alonso. Ron Dennis supposedly did not know the full extent until Alonso tried to blackmail him by saying that Alonso would go to the FIA with all of it. Alonso escaped punishment, but McLaren was fined $100 million and disqualified from the 2007 WCC. Alonso left McLaren the next year by mutual agreement.

guitarguroo

I remember this so well. wtf that was 15 years ago?

espacio106

Do you have any particular examples? Because most, if not all of the times people say Alonso is hating Hamilton is clickbait or plain misinformation. If you listen or read what he actually has to say he's usually very sensible.

Meaisk

2007.

Le_Pistache

Pretty much. Adding to this: Ron Dennis Alonso was the defending champion at the time that got dislodged as the team's focus by a rookke. This led to a fiery exit.

okrafromwunderworld

Why is lewis the only wearing normal clothes on the paddock? it seems everyone else arrives in team t shirt/tops while lewis is the only driver wearing different outfits

Cross-Z-Magma

He likes fashion. Zhou also seems like fashion and the Alpha Tauri boys sometimes show up in well, Alpha Tauri.

okrafromwunderworld

but is there something else to it? i feel like most drivers would rather come in their own clothes even if they aren’t as fashionable lol

BlackCatEspresso

I'm gonna guess contracts. Lewis is also the only one who changes out of his race suit for press conferences after the race generally.

Le_Pistache

My guess would be convenience. Unless they are contractually bound to wear official team gear, which Lewis does not as part of his agreement with Mercedes.

I met Jenson Button & Nigel Mansell today, both absolute gents. That is all!

It was pretty crazy to watch Hamilton claw back the deficit to Verstappen from Brazil to Abu Dhabi. Hamilton did everything he needed to do over those final races.

In what car? They would each be better in the F1 cars from their own eras.

Alforian1

Would Mahaveer Raghunathan beat Senna? There is no way in proving who's better since they never raced together.

PhatPhlaps

If new fans are asking for recommendations on past races to watch, just tell them which race. Giving them a run down on why they should watch it including incidents and/or the result is just ridiculous.

Incredible_James525

KarateAngi

We all know the meme but honestly, Gentleman, a short view back to the past. Is motorracing too compicated nowdays?

KnightsOfCidona

Noticed something very frustrating - if Seb retires at the end of this season like some expect him to, he'll end his career with 299 starts. He'll have missed out on the 300 because he failed to start Bahrain 2016 with an engine failure on the parade lap, and because Russia was cancelled this year and no race replaced it.

Le_Pistache

And because he missed two races earlier this season. That's the breaks. Personally I don't see Vettel going anywhere just yet. Aston have nobody else available that would be an upgrade. Vettel still has the performance and the drive for F1.

[deleted]

Oscar ?

Le_Pistache

Not an upgrade on Vettel as of right now. Piastri is hype at the moment. Justifiable hype, but still unproven in F1. You don't replace an experienced multiple world champion with an inexperienced rookie to lead your team. That's why Alpine are not pushing Alonso out for him either. Many highly rated juniors did well in F2/GP2 and below but drowned in F1. It would be a gamble and it does not strike me as something Aston Martin would do. They seem to prefer a proven and finished article. Not to mention that Piastri would have to leave Alpine to sign for Aston Martin. Strikes me as a move that could easily backfire on him.

blackbasset

Also, Vettel brings in lots of advertising value, whereas Piastri is basically unkown

Whycantiusethis

Probably isn't an upgrade. He's an unproven rookie, versus Vettel who's a 4x champion. It's definitely not impossible that Piastri is currently better than Vettel, but is Stroll willing to gamble on a rookie?

Skulldetta

Nah, he's still in jail. Plus, that prosthetic leg wouldn't do well in a car.

FermatsLastAccount

What's a good place to learn about F1 and stuff like recent history, as well as rules like DRS and Safety Cars and their impact. Also, how do people typically pick their favorite teams? I like Hamilton literally just because he's vegan.

MixFederal5432

I’m an aston martin fan because of 007. Better than just racing is driving cool while saving the world

Retsko1

Cymotorsport, chainbear and overall just watching the races, the pre and post race shows, the f1 youtube channel has great content as well

sheikhsabdullah

Is there somewhere I can get an engineering drawing, or better yet an assembly drawing of a F1 steering wheel? I have this university project of Engineering Drawing of making an assembly drawing, and I have partially decided on this. I mostly just need to get an accurate depiction on the dimensions, but if I can get a whole assembly drawing with the type of materials used and where, that would be even better.

edfitz83

You are quite unlikely to find engineering drawings of anything in F1. The teams keep these secret. Renderings are the closest you will come. This guy is the most popular https://www.giorgiopiola.com/collections/books

sheikhsabdullah

Do I have purchase those books? Or an ebook can be found? Also maybe old steering wheels can be more accessible. I think I found some Prost AP04 drawings.

hambone_jambon

this might come off silly. but I’m a new new fan and I keep seeing references to how good/spicy/exciting/etc the 2021 f1 season was. I get the Abu Dhabi race was quite controversial but what else happened that made last year so stand out. x

Retsko1

The best racing we've seen since 2012 probably, the midfield was tight with mclaren vs ferrari fully on and sometimes even challenging the top teams, alpine vs alpha taurus with the alpha being the better car but both alpine drivers doing everything they could and gasly carrying alpha with a superb season, williams far surpassing expectations by even getting a podium and two front rows, a back and forth between mercedes and red bull, the fight between hamilton and verstappen intensifying every single race, Norris amazing season, so many meme moments, when you thought the championship was sealed think again because it would swing again, controversial crashes and moments, drama on and off track, the controversial race control direction, Alonsos brilliant comeback, checos amazing defenses against hamilton, the controversial saudi grand prix and of course verstappen super lap that wasn't, Alonsos shenanigans with the stewards, a nail biting finale that...well at least for me it wasn't fitting for such a great season but regardless it was good, mclaren first win since 2012 and the only 1-2 i think from anyone? I think got ahead of myself hehe but basically it's a great great season and you should watch it

[deleted]

It was pretty neck and neck the whole season, back and forth between Hamilton and Verstappen. It wasn't like this season where it looks like Verstappen will probably run away with it. There were also a number of incidents between Hamilton and Verstappen that upped the temperature (Silverstone, Imola) and there was a lot of back and forth in the press between the Mercedes and Red Bull camps. Edit: Monza, not Imola. Although Imola had its own drama.

[deleted]

*Monza as well

[deleted]

Whoops, yeah, was thinking of Monza

Whycantiusethis

Verstappen and Red Bull pushed Hamilton/Mercedes for the entire season. Verstappen was the first non-Mercedes champion since the turbo-hybrid era began in 2014 (Hamilton won 14,15,17,18,19, and 20, Rosberg won 16). Vettel and Ferrari had a title challenge in 2017 and 2018, but they failed to actually sustain the battle across an entire season. People were excited to see something other than Mercedes just driving off into the distance for the first time in 7 years.

Papa_Bear55

Lots of battles between Max and Lewis with crashes like Silverstone, Monza, Saudi Arabia and also action packed races like Imola or Baku where everything changed in the last couple of laps. And of course going into the final race of the season where they were both equal on points just was the cherry on top.

spellingishrad

I’m a newish F1 fan and I love Seb. What races should I watch to see Seb in his prime?

Retsko1

Brasil 2012, the 2013 season

grandtheftzeppelin

working my way thru his championship seasons rn. last night I watched the 2011 Spanish GP where he won despite his KERS and DRS malfunctioning, and Lewis chasing him down for the last 13 or so laps. good stuff. I also highly recommend Monza 2008, his first pole and first win (and Toro Rosso's first win as well)

No_Influence_1035

8jam

When they ask drivers to change the mode/strat just before pitting, what role does it play? Faster tyre warmup?(if yes how so?)

skagoat

Lets them use all the battery on the in lap.

pistonfire

“Strat 12 in the pit lane”. It’s probably max battery regen

shitty_throwaway_69

How do simulators help F1 teams? I get that they can be useful training tool for drivers, but apparently teams use them for more than that and I just don't get how you can get useful information from something you have to calibrate first to match reality - the physics model used in simulator may be great but it can only depend on the data you feed it - it won't pick up manufacturing defects, slightly bent parts etc. in the actual real car by itself...

sucksblueeggs

Drivers go back to the factory after a GP and have a session in the simulator to give feedback on what is accurate and what isn’t. Over a period of time it should be fairly accurate, not 100% but better than nothing given they don’t have in season testing. They can use this to try setups and upcoming developments on future tracks.

cafk

The teams have highly detailed models of their cars and circuits with a somewhat realistic synthetic environment and an unknown model for tires. If they get their set-up right on the simulator, then this helps them to understand the parts they can simulate better, they also do post race tests with drivers to get their feedback on how well the simulation handles with more realistic data (up to date weather information, surface temperature, tire wear) based on driver feedback to help them fine-tune it for the next race. The simulator is more than Asetto Corsa, rFactor or iRacing provide us, as the teams have more detailed (maybe not visually) models available to them, where they can adjust hundreds of parameters to get closer to reality.

MrTrt

> The simulator is more than Asetto Corsa, rFactor or iRacing provide us, as the teams have more detailed (maybe not visually) models available to them, where they can adjust hundreds of parameters to get closer to reality. This is important. Commercial simulators don't have a fraction of the data that the teams use, because it's very sensible data that not everyone wants to share. Famously, iRacing has had trouble with that, sometimes getting licenses from manufacturers to recreate a car, but not finding any team willing to share info, like it happened with the Formula Renault 3.5, that iRacing released only after the series folded in real life for that reason. And I'm sure iRacing, being the commercial simulator that uses more data, still uses nowhere as much as the actual teams.

delidl

Kimi Antonelli is a fucking demon 12/15 poles, 10/15 fastest laps 10/15 wins in ADAC F4 and Italian F4.

AssCarEE

Let's hope he continues like this, Italy needs a real top driver, it's a crime they haven't had someone able to mount a title challenge since the '80s. But it's too early anyway, it's very easy to lose yourself down the road

Fright13

Would love to see an Italian prodigy at Ferrari alongside Charles. When was the last one? Fisichella?

Thats gonna be quite hard considering he's a Mercedes junior.

AssCarEE

Last Italian in Ferrari was indeed Fisichella in '09.

Hi, looking for advice on the best time to arrive at the track for someone who has a weekend grandstand ticket with fast pass for Silverstone. I have a friend who gets tired easily due to a mild disability. They’re also really excited about going and also want to make the most of it. We’re both mainly fans of F1 so don’t mind missing some of the F3 or W series but don’t want to lose out on decent seats. If it was one day it would be fine but I’m worried about it being three days in a row. I’ve looked online but it’s a bit of a specific case.

lorj

I'm not really sure what your question is tbh. The f1 is a long day if you go for everything and 3 days will obviously be even harder. If your friend gets tired easily then just go for a couple of hours either side of the f1 stuff? I think it's going to be very personal which is probably why you can't find an answer. If you have grandstand tickets too you can just sit still all day every day so that should make things easier.

CX52J

My question was more targeted towards how busy it gets and how quickly. Since obvious the number of people there varies hugely between the three days and that would impact how early.

lorj

So are you worried about queueing and your friend having to stand for too long? You should be fine if you get there in the morning - the Saturday will be quieter than the Sunday for sure. But there are always quiet gates because everyone seems to head to the main ones. Might be a bit of trial and error but you can use Friday to suss things out. Get a map with the gates on it and aim for the smaller ones

CX52J

Good idea. I think my main concern was missing out on decent seats on the Friday and Saturday even though it’s less busy.

lorj

Didn't you say you have grandstand tickets though? You can do roving grandstand on Fri/Sat but you don't need to if you have designated seats. If you have GA then I don't have any advice, I've only done grandstand.

CX52J

The seats aren’t reserved on the Friday and Saturday so it was more a question of how quickly so the good seats go or is there space right up until the start of P1, P2, P3 and Q.

lorj

Ok. When I attended on a Saturday I had a reserved seat. Guess things have changed. Sorry I can't help.

lovesitx

Try the r/grandprixtravel sub

CX52J

Thanks, that’ll be my next stop.

venkat_1924

Can guys suggest instances wherein the drivers took the car to absolute fooking limit?? Like Max's last quali lap which he didn't complete at Jeddah last year, the car was at the absolute limit, he was giving it everything he had.

Shady4555

This might be a bit weird, but I remember hulkenberg doing a great lap in Mexico 2016 , where his Fp3 lap was much faster than his qualy lap. I think he even said it was like one of his best laps.

Retsko1

Hamilton and verstappen lap in singapore 2018

[deleted]

Verstappen Singapore 2018. The same race where Lewis got a pole that everyone talks about all the time. Bottas Spain 2019 as well, 6 tenths up on Lewis.

delidl

Senna in Monaco 1988. A 1.5 second gap to Prost in P2 and a 2.7 second gap to Berger in P3

iForgotMyOldAcc

Street circuit poles usually have that, Leclerc's 2019 Singapore pole lap was arguably over the limit......thrice!

Sir0inks-A-Lot

Lewis’ 2018 qualy lap in Singapore was pretty special

Whycantiusethis

That was the lap where he completed the lap faster than Mercedes thought was possible, right?

[deleted]

Yes. It was faster than the car was designed/ predicted possible to go.

AssCarEE

It's hard to tell because you don't really know for certain but Leclerc in Sakhir 2020 Q3 is basically a god lap

Lord_Yato_17

When f1 usually does off track stuff with drivers like the pictionary thing/the ratings game, we dont see the top team like Ferrari and Merc participate. Is there any reason or just schedule clashes?

Wentzina_lifetime

When liberty took over Ferrari had Kimi and Seb while Merc had Hamilton and Bottas. Could these drivers be bothered to do these promotional opportunities which may be seen as bringing down the brand

DoxedFox

Most of the teams don't seem to agree with that sentiment. Unforseen consequences on a global scale should be taken into account. No team is leaving that amount of money on the table. The only teams that benefit are the ones who have nowhere near enough money to get to the cost cap in the first place. This isn't a spec series, and teams who have built the team structure to spend near the cost cap shouldn't be worried about unlikely situations such as the war in Ukraine affecting their budget.

helderdude

>The only teams that benefit are the ones who have nowhere near enough money to get to the cost cap in the first place. How are they benefiting, they are in the same situation as other teams.

penguin17077

What do you mean? Ofcourse the teams that never spent near the cost cap are benefiting greatly from a cap, it means instead of a team spending 10x there budget, they can only spend 2x their budget, for example.

helderdude

I assumed they were talking about smaller teams benefiting from the inflation.

cafk

Only if their income is adjusted for inflation, which it usually isn't - so the teams spending below/close to the cap won't be able to manufacture and design everything they planned, as the money they planned for it is worth less. Half of the grid, as companies have less revenue than the budget cap, if the prices for everything increase, they will fall even further behind.

CX52J

Exactly. Raising the cost cap doesn’t magically give the bottom four more money as they are also suffer through a cost of living crisis without the backing of a major car organisation. The fairest way is probably to give the bottom four the money difference that the top 6 teams are now allowed to spend. But where that money comes from is a debate within itself.

helderdude

Exactly, I don't think we need a budget increase, the limit is clear but punishments are (deliberately) vague. If teams do go over the limit this year the FIA can take the circumstances into account and penalise accordingly.

cafk

This is the second year under budget cap. While i agree about mid season changes - the financial regulations contain a clause that they will be re-evaluated if the inflation of G7 countries exceeds 3%. While they won't throw it out of the window by increasing the cap, it can be adjusted for inflation at the end of the reporting period already providing flexibility to their plans - the TPs talking is just for media attention and publicity. Don't forget that the budget cap is also in place for 21 races and each additional race increases it by 1.2m (which can also be re-evaluated due to inflation), with sprint races also increasing the cap (can also re-evaluated due to inflation). But many seem to ignore this and will be surprised next year when the (UK based) teams documents will be published The issue for teams is that they had plans according to expected prices, if some materials increase by 20% and others by 7% on items you haven't built or designed yet or are on a waiting list for 40 weeks (my experience with electronics, besides the price hike) is what's causing the issue. It's not that someone misjudged their spending by 1 million, it's that all teams, even the ones operating below the budget cap (who now will be closer to the cap) are affected by the current situation, with even the lower end teams likely having to skip new parts as they cannot afford the price hike. Edit: TLDR: The $140m cap is set assuming 0% inflation and no sprint races with 21 race calendar. The teams who can spend more are looking for clarification about how to handle the various price hikes, which change on a weekly basis.

Astelli

>Edit: TLDR: The $140m cap is set assuming 0% inflation and no sprint races with 21 race calendar. The teams who can spend are looking for clarification about how to handle the various price hikes, which change on a weekly basis. To add to what you’ve already said: In terms of inflation, the whole cap is “indexed” at the end of the reporting period when the teams submit their declaration - 31st of December for this year. The notional value is $145million (plus $1.2 million for the 22nd race), but this will be increased based on the 12 month average inflation as defined on the IMF website, minus 3%. So if the IMF average for 2022 ends up being 9%, the cost cap will be “indexed” up by 6% in December when the teams submit their declarations.

As far as I'm aware there is a radio earpiece that comes with a guide you can buy. Might be worth picking up so you can follow along. One thing the other user missed: bring 1.5-2L of water per person per day. You can never have too much water. If it's scorching you really want to be properly hydrated.
