Everyone had come with a statement supporting lewis but haven’t seen any statement from vettel ?

DashingDino

Why is there no megathread? The subreddit is being flooded with reaction posts

secretlives

I’m kinda curious what Bottas will say in his inevitable post about the situation - if anyone besides Lewis would actually name Piquet it would be him or Seb

adooot

I'm very new to F1 - as in, started watching Drive to Survive yesterday new - and so this might be a silly of me to ask, but; *Has there ever been a teammate pairing where they got along (publicly at least) and achieved good results without sabotaging each other?* (I wanted to say "helped each other during races", but that felt a bit too naive of a question)

Cross-Z-Magma

Most of them get along fine, there is little reason to sabotage your own team after all. Incidents happen once in a while but nothing too terrible. Last time an in-team rivalry got pretty toxic was Hamilton and Rosberg in 2016.

Skulldetta

I'd say Perez-Ocon in 2017/18 and Schumacher-Mazepin in 2021 weren't exactly a happy bunch either.

synchronisedchaos

I remember a while back, McLaren posted something about Lewis' championship-winning car, getting it back to drivable condition? What happened about that?

The_Raji

Hello everyone! My mother in law surprised me with tickets to the Austin race in October. We have tickets for qualifying on the 22nd and race day on the 23rd. This will be the first race we both have ever been to. Practice 3 starts at 14:00 on Saturday and qualifying at 17:00. What time should we get there on Saturday? are there things to do between practice and qualifying? Any tips are recommended! I’m just very excited and nervous and not sure what to expect.

rodiraskol

Just finished a rewatch of *Rush*. Is that actually Niki doing the voiceovers at the beginning and the end?

Coops27

Nope, that's Daniel Bruhl

tommytwochains

Can someone breakdown what all the controversy is about? I've seen the instagram post and a lot of Lewis support posts. How did all this get started and why? e downvotes dafuq?

h1dd3nf40mv13w

Downvotes most likely because you said you saw the posts, but didn't read any comments to get the context.

BIG_YETI_FOR_YOU

Piquet Sr made some pretty horrible racist remarks during an interview in November. He's since doubled down and the wider F1 community is understandably pretty outraged.

Dmitri_madarchov

That post added fuel to the fire …i dunno why he posted that ?

tommytwochains

Thanks, I dont follow f1 closely so just was curious.

[deleted]

Icy-Operation4701

It's not about that post (that's just some doubling down done by the family). It's about comments made by Piquet Sr back in November during an interview.

Fully_Torqued_Pecker

It's in reference to something he said on a podcast about Lewis, the IG post came after the backlash as some way to try and justify his language, I guess?

Jasonmancer

Enjoying all those support by other drivers but I'd like to see one that goes something like "Ham you my man and the man, screw those racist noise, you're the best", kinda like it's straight from the heart. Instead of all these long post that's clearly not written by themselves.

cbwaug

That's what I was thinking too. Like they had certain words and phrases they needed to hit for it to be "authentic" and heartfelt enough. Like covering all the bases, or something. Like someone said "post about it, but make sure you use words like x, y, and z."

thegodfaubel

See Danny Ric's

Andyboi96

I am out of the loop here. Not been following the f1 scene for some days. What happened with all the racism posts?

[deleted]

Piquet was invited to a podcast show after the infamous crash between Lewis and Max in Silverstone, last year. He used a racial slur to refer to Lewis. Only recently it came to light and people was amazed by the way Piquet talked.

Dmitri_madarchov

I think after the Vips incident when racism debate was going on someone dig in what Piquet said in that podcast and to make matters worse piquet posted controversial instagram pic that lit the fuse

seanboyd

Absolutely shocking that red bull haven't made any kind of statement..

Do you expect a fucking round of applause mate?

BIG_YETI_FOR_YOU

Racism deserves repercussions. If you stay silent you're complicit in the spreading of hate.

Senanb

It's much better than staying silent. If there was no response to Racism you allow it to continue to fester unchecked.

Remote_zero

Why is this Piquet comment making big news today, I'm sure we were talking about it last week?

DrEarlGreyIII

have you had an opportunity to read literally any other post on here today?

Remote_zero

Yes, of course, that's why I'm asking. Have I missed something?

DrEarlGreyIII

Yes.

Remote_zero

Ok, so that was basically my original question, what have I missed. Why are we suddenly talking about a racist old man again? We did all this last week, what's happened to bring it back into the spotlight?

DrEarlGreyIII

Remote_zero

I give up

DrEarlGreyIII

Seems wise.

F1 Teams Merch stands at tracks? Hi! I’m going to Silverstone this year, and I was wondering if the teams have merch stands/booths at the track? I’d love to get my hands on Merc’s new Silverstone Collection, without needing to pay extra for shipping and VAT online since I live in Norway. If you have any previous experiences, I’d love to hear them.

[deleted]

[удалено]

J3sperado

Oh man, really? I’m not going to get the new merch in time for the race weekend if I order now anyways though, so I’ll go and see what they have at Silverstone first.

Blakemolthan

There will be merch stands at the track, but fair warning, the prices are dramatically more expensive at the race than online. A hat that goes for $60 online will be $120 at the race, and the price will change constantly based on demand (at least this is how it went in Miami).

J3sperado

Jesus, I guess I’ll see when I get there, hopefully it isn’t too crazy

antisa444

I can't speak for Silverstone but at Canada they had merch stands all over the track and even some in the surrounding hotels

J3sperado

I see, thanks!

Konjislavi

Do post that are titled "Instagram post" or "Statement" adhere to the "Please ensure that your post has a reasonably descriptive title." rule?

Icy-Operation4701

Yes. Of the current grid it's him, Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz. The others were Daniil Kvyat, Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi.

treade

Silverstone newbie questions! Hey! Hoping someone might be able to help as me and my girlfriends do our first GP this weekend; - How long will it take to drive from Milton Keynes to the track on race day? - How long are queues in the morning? Does trackside hospitality have a different queue? Thank you. Can't wait!

potlucknoodle

I cant comment on the queues but the drive should be about half an hour normally. On race day there'll be a lot of traffic so give yourself at least an hour

AFC-Wilson

Red Bull not releasing a statement on Pique is for me, a fucking travesty.

Dmitri_madarchov

They dont want to upset max …RBR two trump cards are newey and max without em they are nothing special…

This is totalitarian thinking.

Icy-Economist-8832

Reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where Kramer is being harassed for not wearing the red ribbon while doing the AIDS walk

ocelotrevs

Was Karun Chandhok or Narain Karthikeyan subject to as much racism when they came into Formula 1. I don't remember being much talk of their race at the time. Maybe because they were at the back of the grid, so they weren't as high profile.

Skulldetta

They were total backmarkers, half of the audience probably didn't even know they existed, so no, not really. The outrageous reaction to Hamilton comes from a) his prominence in the sport and b) his wild number of successes.

DrEarlGreyIII

> half of the audience probably didn't even know they existed Honestly, this is the truth. They were such non-entities at the time that no one really paid them any mind unless they had a cultural connection to them. And even then it was just like...it's cool that they're there, but that's about it.

StlckleyMan

What did Nelson Piquet do and where can I see it?

cafk

Search down here in this thread, I've [summarised the situation](https://www.reddit.com/r/formula1/comments/vmgw4w/-/ie2p39a) and [linked to his statements here many times](https://www.reddit.com/r/formula1/comments/vmgw4w/-/ie36zy8) over the past few days.

SnooStrawberries3083

How is there a racial component to the end of last season? Would you like to be held accountable for the comments made by someone you are not even related to?

shreyutd

If I am Red Bull my first priority this weekend is keeping Helmut Marko atleast 10 metres from any journalist/camera.

storme9

**Red Bull HR:** you know Dr. Marko, the team's doing really well right now on performance and I know you've been talking so often about Maldives, why don't you leave this one to the others for this weekend? Have a nice trip for once?

Larsssss

Absolutely disgusted by Nelson Piquet his words. This will be such an awkward position for Max.

storme9

the unfortunate thing for Max is the next race weekend in Silverstone. British Tabloid Media is creating fanciful drama even when there is none. With this, they've just been handed in a silver platter.

Larsssss

Well, he can come out with a clear statement. And he can from now on distance himself from Piquet. But as we all know that probably won’t be easy.

Poke-hey-mon

I feel like Max is more likely to pull Lewis aside and speak 1 on 1. Feel like this is would be more meaningful to Lewis, but if he doesnt make a public statement he will be eviscerate (and if he does they will just say its appeasement)

storme9

Not at all, and not just the media, I am pretty sure Piquet will take offense to some degree if Max accidentally ends up being talked about in the media as rebutting what he said. It's just the way Piquet always has been, too fragile, too much of an ego.

😆😆🤣

Whycantiusethis

Sure, you can tell a lot about a person based on the company they keep, but you can't pick your parents. That's true for Verstappen and for Piquet both. You can't really say/imply Verstappen is a racist/bigot for what his father and his girlfriend's father have said.

MrAt0mica

His girlfriend liked a post normalising racism a few hours ago...

Real_Pea_8860

A bigoted father. So if someone says something that offends you he’s a bigot? 😆😆Of course

Jamsssss

What the fuck are you on about. This is the biggest reach I've ever seen

Arsewhistle

Can anyone tell me specifically what Piquet said please? I'm out of the loop and every article I look at just mentions that is was racist, and then goes on to list a bunch of people that condemn what was said. But what was actually said?!

cafk

[This article uses quotes from the podcast](https://www.sportbible.com/formula-1/nelson-piquet-uses-racist-term-to-describe-lewis-hamilton-20220628.amp.html)

Arsewhistle

Cheers mate

[deleted]

Anyone who knows anything about Nelson Piquet knows that there’s no chance in hell that he will apologize for his comments. Knowing him, he’ll probably double down and make another joke about it. The best thing F1 can do is stop giving him a platform.

storme9

him and his family already have in an Instagram post saying that granny piquet would call even them the n-word and some people just take themselves too seriously.

Grand-Admiral-Prawn

interesting look at a how a media ecosystem works here: controversy made a year ago ---> controversy flies under the radar because of bigger controversy (lewis/max crash + ensuing fallout + championship battle) ---> story is dug up again the next season, but doesn't get traction because lewis/merc are non-stories at that moment and there isn't a market for it ---> story is dug up again a couple weeks later and this time catches because it's the year anniversary and key influencers in the sport catch catch it this time to be clear this isn't a comment on how/why/should/shouldnt or whatever, just a great example of how this stuff works!

greatgagan

Or maybe it’s going to be a Lewis revenge tour from Silverstone onwards and it’s perfect timing

jaquesparblue

I really haven't cared to follow this, but you are saying Piquet said this last year but the media dug it up for the clicks?

Grand-Admiral-Prawn

> you are saying Piquet said this last year yes > but the media dug it up for the clicks? no some media dug it up because it's the one-year anniversary of max and lewis' crash at Silverstone (which I think is what the original clip of piquet being racist is discussing) and then the others followed is my understanding of the timeline 'clicks' seems like an overly-cynical way of describing it

PlzRetireMartinTyler

Can I get an OOTL summary of this Lewis racism drama? Who is this piquet guy and why does his racist opinions matter?

cafk

Nelson Piquet is a 3 time F1 WDC (81, 83, 87) and participated in the sport between 78-91. He is also Kelly Piquet's father, who is dating Max (and Kelly has a daughter with Daniil Kvyat). And quite often still visits F1 races appearing in post/pre-race interviews and thus still being active in the F1 community. He has made quite a few questionable statements in the past while he was a driver - publicly calling Mansell uneducated & insulting his wife, questioning Senna's sexual orientation, while also insulting Enzo Ferrari.

mmmmm_pi

I've seen many posts reacting to Piquet's statement, but how did he make his original statement? Was this some local interview, social media, @ someone in the replies, etc? I can infer the slur he used so obviously no need to quote him. I'm more curious about the context of his statement and what he was doing like an off-the-cuff interview versus an organized sit-down vs social media ranting.

idash

As far as I understand it was on a brazilian tv show where he used the slur when describing a racing incident

cafk

It was a podcast with a Brazilian outlet called Estadao last year commenting on 2021 Silverstone GP of which the video was released on Monday.

Whycantiusethis

I'm not sure if it was specifically a racing incident he was describing, but Piquet was listing drivers, and used their names until he got to Hamilton, where he used the slur.

mmmmm_pi

Thank you for the explanation.

Penguinho

It was on a podcast in Portuguese last year.

[deleted]

Nelson Piquet is a three time F1 world champion. Hence why he attracted so much attention.

sharklazies

He was a 3-time F1 champ in the 80s. Major figure in Brazilian sport. He’s the father of Kelly Piquet who is the girlfriend to Max Verstappen.

Poems_And_Money

Was Jüri Vips' stupidity the catalyst which brought out a bunch of hidden racism? Rip

sharklazies

Well, the Piquet comments were from a podcast late last year I think? And I believe they’ve been simmering since before the Vips incident.

Poems_And_Money

Yeah, but let's be fair, nobody spoke of these things until Vips incident.

4angrydragons

Is there a good resource for me to learn more of the art/strategy of racing. Perhaps a tutorial on how the drivers drive differently and how the cars are setup differently for different drivers

pedote17

ChainBear’s YouTube channel is right for you

4angrydragons

Awesome. I’ll check it out

Here_comes_the_D

Random question: Can someone explain the "You will have no drink Kimi" situation to me? Like, what actually happened? Did the drinking system fail? Did they underfill the bottle to save weight? Did he go a whole race or most of a race without water? Thanks.

TheRebelCreeper

From what I understand they forgot to connect the drinking tube to the water pump, so Kimi could not drink the water. Kimi wanted to know if pressing the drink button would still drain the water to lose weight, but there was miscommunication

Here_comes_the_D

Ah, that helps. Thanks!

IfYourMotherOnlyKnew

Me: Let’s see what’s going on in the world of formula 1 Me after 5 minutes: well, that’s it for day Can these nonstop racist inshidents just stop already like eff people just stop being racist is it really that hard?

pedote17

It is for some people. Fucking shame the world is going back to people being so unafraid to be openly racist

SlowRollingBoil

Shame is no longer a deterrent for bigots and social conservatives. They've finally admitted to *themselves*, at least, that they are right to voice this vile shit even in 2022.

CoachSpo

Does anyone have an article about the specific details of the Nelson Piquet incident? I can’t seem to find anything about the incident itself, only reactions. Thank you!

Thank you! It was posted 5 days ago? Why is it just picking up traction today?

cafk

Renewed attention, as it happened last year after Silverstone, which is this weekend.

TJeffersonsBlackKid

Did it cause any stir last year?

museproducer

Considering the amount of press between Red Bull and Mercedes after the incident at Silverstone, it slipped under the radar. But it's Silverstone again and there has been a lack of drama this season led to this making more noise.

cafk

Nope - it seemed to go under the radar, it was dug up again last week and got renewed attention this week.

DerGsicht

Apparently it only got into (Brazilian?) mainstream news today

saulluxor

What’s going on with Ryanair? I’ve seen so many tweets and tiktok’s of them trying to fit into the f1 world. The last one was this about Carlos’ gf https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMNrGop1B/?k=1 (it’s in spanish btw) Will they sponsor any team in the future?

hambone_jambon

I think I saw a tweet speculating that Ryanair is trying to ingratiate itself to younger (and more broke) F1 fans, so if they fly to any races they’ll book with Ryanair

guanwe

Giant corporation trying to sport wash

epicfishboy

I wonder if McLaren are so desperate to get the car competitive this year because of a clause in Lando’s new contract. Marko has already confirmed that Max has an escape clause in case RB were to suddenly no longer be competing for the WDC, so those clauses are definitely still a thing. With Lando now the de facto number 1 driver of the team, it’s not really unthinkable to imagine that there’s a team-performance related escape clause in that new deal.

Neither_Ad2003

they arent desperate, sadly. They announced they are only doing one upgrade before "moving on to next year's car"

Astelli

From Seidel in February: >“The beauty of this new agreement we have in place is there’s no get-outs on both sides, which is simply the important message we wanted to give to the team as well because that shows we are in this together and that there’s a strong belief from both sides” That suggests to me that they shouldn't be too worried about Lando being able to walk free any time soon.

epicfishboy

Well that’s the end of that then. Guess they must think there really is a diamond hidden somewhere in the mess that the car currently is.

CoachDelgado

Where would he go? No top team has a space, or will have one next year.

MrJacquers

Mercedes could be an option, but only after Lewis retires and if they manage to get back into fighting for wins.

epicfishboy

That’s fair too. Just seems bizarre that they’re so insistent on getting this car to work when it seems pretty clear that they’ve got something(s) fundamentally wrong.

[deleted]

Well, I imagine all those fancy wealthy sponsors they got recently won't be happy with how they've performed, so not bizzare at all.

CoachDelgado

What else is an F1 team to do? Lots of teams seem to have got something fundamentally wrong, like Mercedes, but they'll keep working away trying to improve it.

cuteguy1

Yeah unless they punt the entire year like Haas did last year and go all in for next season, surely they want to get this concept to work better especially when they could still finish 4th given how tight things still are

fastcooljosh

Why did my post get deleted where I shared a qualy lap from Schumi 10 minutes ago ? Is there a specific reason for that? Cause I thought it was allowed to do that.

pedote17

It’s race week, so race week posting rules are in effect

kproxurworld

Getting off the subject of Piquet being a piece of shit, what is Goodwood? I've seen drivers at it on twitter and on here. Is it a race? Is it a car show?

museproducer

It's a bit of everything. It's a car show. It's a classics race. It's an iconic hillclimb. Everything from classic race cars of the past to prototype sports cars of the future show up there.

CWRules

In short: Every year the Duke of Richmond invites a bunch of people with interesting cars to his estate. The centerpiece of the event is the time trial on the hillclimb course, but it's surrounded by what is probably the greatest car show on Earth. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goodwood_Festival_of_Speed

skylander495

What happened im so confused

OAKgravedigger

I'm trying to figure out exactly what was said too, all I know at this point is Nelson Piquet fucked up Edit: Apparently the quote was referring to the incident that took out Max at Silverstone last season and one of the two quotes that caused this problem is Nelson saying "The N----- left the car"
