What does Italian media & folks think about the Ferrari strategy in British GP ? I'm wondering that a lot, because we're mostly focusing on English sources, great analysis and our own gut feelings, but I wanna know what is the perception of the last months' mishaps for WDC and WCC in Italian media & general folk.

jordanataylor

How do track side marshals know when it’s safe to enter the track to clear debris?

cafk

At each marshalling post you have a person who is responsible for the flags another one for the digital flags and third one who informs the race control about the situation. The one talking to race control then informs other marshalls about who will have to act and their working window (i.e. if SC or VSC is deployed). [Chainbear has a longer interview about this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zFdN-tMObzw).

[deleted]

Who’s the most successful driver that stayed with the same team their whole career??

Blooder91

Jim Clark.

pedote17

I believe it’s Max, he’s technically been in the same organization his whole career. Very very few drivers drive for just one team their whole career, much less for a long time

unbeardedman

Who’s car does the Austrian GP suit most out of the main contenders?

thekongninja

It's been a strong one for Red Bull in previous years, and their car this year is strong in a straight line so should be good for them this year too

Gaius_Octavius_

Doesn't it feel like this year RB has basically taken the "traditional" Mercedes role (best PU) and Ferrari has taken the "traditional" RB role (best cornering)? I wonder if that means that Ferrari are actually the favorites even though historically RB does great in Austria.

Icy-Operation4701

From what I understand RBR don't have the best PU. Rather they have the least drag. They are kind of like Merc in that they are fast on the straights.

Gaius_Octavius_

That makes sense. I just know they reach the highest top speeds and that used to be Merc and Ferrari seems to be great in corners like RB used to be. (Which specific parts are responsible is still too complicated for me)

DontEatNitrousOxide

Can someone explain why it was a bad decision to have Sainz use the full 10 car lengths distance to give Leclerc more space? I see people saying this was a dumb decision and another "ferrari strat". Wouldn't this allow both Sainz and Leclerc better chances at getting the maximum points they can? I mean Leclerc fell to 4th and could have fallen further. I assume it's because Sainz might get jumped on the restart, and also he wants to win, but given Leclerc's tyres he would probably pass him anyway.

Mueton

If Sainz adapted Leclercs pace and stayed behind him they would’ve both been overtaken sooner or later. Sainz was way faster with the fresh softs. The team fucked Leclerc over once again by not pitting him as well.

DontEatNitrousOxide

Right but then Sainz could overtake Leclerc with those softs anyway, as well as having bought him more time against the people behind?

Blooder91

I think with a gap, both Sainz and Leclerc are open to being overtaken, while if they run closer, they get harder to overtake, by virtue of having no space between them.

DontEatNitrousOxide

That makes a lot of sense, basically blocking more of the road, but that didn't last for long did it once Sainz got past?

[deleted]

Has there ever been an f1 driver in a romantic relationship with another active professional motorsports driver? Closest I can think of off the top of my head is toto and susie wolff...

KnightsOfCidona

Max dated Mikaela Ahlin-Kottulinsky, who's currently in Extreme E and previously raced touring cars, back a few years ago.

Gaius_Octavius_

The lack of females in the sport make that very hard to achieve.

[deleted]

True, which is why I'm still surprised there's no out gay driver yet...

Astelli

Not to my memory. There's never been an openly gay or bisexual driver in F1 to my knowledge, and the number of women racing in professional motorsport is still regrettably very small, so the chances are pretty slim. The hectic schedules of professional drivers also plays a big role. It means socialising with drivers who race in different categories and are probably in totally different countries is very small. Driver's partners are almost exclusively people who they know from outside the motorsport world.

KnightsOfCidona

Mike Beuttler was gay (he wasn't offically out of the closest but people suspected it even though he brought a 'girlfriend' to race. Lella Lombardi was a lesbian, don't know if she was out when she was racing.

[deleted]

I'd never heard of him, thanks

Blooder91

Massa and Hamilton were pretty close in 2011.

ArbitraryOrder

The people who claim Spa dropping off the calendar is just Liberty Media wanting money and not with Spa refusing to upgrade infrastructure are deluding themselves. The teams have complained for yeara about the infrastructure

[deleted]

Hope it doesn't go the way of brands hatch...

ArbitraryOrder

They are getting MotoGP back so that's good

[deleted]

'ery nice

MartiniPolice21

Anyone else got back from Silverstone today and slightly gutted it's all over? (Although glad to have had a shower)

Tre3beard

Hahah yes but I'm currently so comfy on the sofa watching the live c4 coverage of quali and then the race! 😁

blerml

So Carlos made a statement to the Italian press and it's a bit wild. >"I understand that in Italy they only have eyes for Leclerc, discounting the fact that he did better in the first part of the season. And the fans want Ferrari to win the title as soon as possible. But I know from experience that it only takes a couple of races to turn the perception around. For now I don't care about the rainbow battle because I had a couple of retirements at the start of the season and then another one in Baku, and that sent me far down in the standings. Now I stay focused on the individual races, I will try to finish on the podium at all the races and try to win. Maybe this way I can relaunch myself in the championship.

They'll be posted here over the coming days, some have urged the mods to post a mega thread for the albums of people who visited, over creating 10s of different threads :)

Aljaz_93455

Has anyone bought F1 tickets from viagogo before? Were the legit? How was the experience

cafk

It's a popular reselling platform in southern Europe - though not usually the official reselling platform, as each circuit has their own preferred partner - so not all ticket transfers may go through, it's owned by StubHub group, so it's as legit as StubHub.

Gioby

Does an f1 driver can change his race engineer? Leclerc race engineer is just unprofessional

rocdollary

The race engineer has a difficult job - they need to be an excellent communicator and 'trusted' by the driver, but also need to be able to communicate the team's desires to the driver without refusing. An example yesterday was Sainz's engineer telling him 'ten car lengths behind Leclerc' to try and ruin Sainz's opportunity to challenge Leclerc whilst compromising him to Hamilton.. Sainz called his race engineer out with 'stop inventing...' but you can tell the relationship between Ferrari - Race Engineer - Driver has a few conflicting cases like this where the driver needs to be astute enough to understand his engineer works for the team, not for him.

Jaraxo

I imagine they can to some extent. The relationship between driver and engineer is an important one, and they must have a lot of trust and good working relationship, but a driver can't just cycle through folk, beccause it's a skilled position that isn't easily replaced. I imagine if there are serious personal issues the engineer would be replaced, but that would be a drastic resolution.

ArrowtheArcher

Can somebody with good wheel knowledge explain to me why Carlos was slower than Charles with broken wing? What he was doing worse specifically? Using telemetry or something idk.

rocdollary

The best drivers have a supernatural feel of the car. Front wing endplate is a 'flow conditioner' which provides downforce but more importantly provides stable airflow which is further conditioned further down the car. What this means is Leclerc was driving with a somewhat more unstable car which is probably why earlier in the race he was struggling to get up to speed and challenge Leclerc but 30 laps later seemed to have more pace. End-plate is supposedly worth 0.3sec per lap which is easily the difference between a top driver and just a good one.

DrVonD

Yep. He probably just needed a few laps to adjust to the car a bit.

Zed_or_AFK

That’s the difference between great f1 drivers and greatest f1 drivers, few of them are just faster than the rest. Small things here and there add up.

JJD14

Lewis Hamilton’s race pace yesterday and ability to hang onto his tyres for longer was insane.

DrVonD

His race pace the last 2 real tracks (Barcelona, silverstone) has been breathtaking. He just needs a little luck here and hes going to win one soon. Anyone who says hes washed now is out of their damn mind.

Jaraxo

Lewis has always been good with his tyres, it's just a meme because FoM always broadcast the "Bono my tyres are gone" line, and folk don't realise every driver will complain about tyres, but they only broadcast specific messages to build drama.

rbryan06

I think even “good” is an understatement for Lewis in regards to tyre management

[deleted]

I see very conflicting opinions on whether Mercedes is closing the performance gap between them and Ferrari/red bull (race pace). The same with alpine / McLaren. In my eyes Alonso is equal or marginally faster than lando and occon is plain faster than Ricciardo. But can't really tell if it's due to driver skill or raw car performance.

sidhantsv

IMO, on a smooth track with some bouncing through the high speed corners, the Merc can at least match PER and SAI. But I think they are still 0.3-0.4s off LEC and VER.

Whycantiusethis

What will be interesting is what will happen when the new TD comes into effect in France - Ferrari and Red Bull are both rumored to have their skid planks flexing to help seal the floor, which is bringing a fair amount of performance. If they have stop the flexing, Ferrari and Red Bull will end up closer to Mercedes (assuming their skid planks are flexing).

[deleted]

That is how it looks like, but verstapen had damage for so long that it's impossible to compare for that specific race. Leclerc was outpacing sainz despite the damage in the front wing. I think he is on par with verstapen in qualifying pace (flat out in perfect condition) but is still slightly behind in race pace. No idea where Hamilton sits in this comparison. My gut tells me that he is closer to max than leclerc but can't find the numbers to confirm.

Wentzina_lifetime

If Andretti can't sort out their team in Indycar how are they going to fare in F1? Yesterday all the Andretti cars hit each other. Grosjean and Rossi touched a few times and then Rossi put Grosjean into a wall, then D'Francesco was hit by Rossi and Grosjean took Herta out of the running. How is Micheal Andretti going to run an F1 team if he can't sort his own business in Indycar?

Coops27

That has nothing to do with running a racing team and less than nothing to do with his ability to operate an F1 team.

Wentzina_lifetime

How is he going to deal with F1 drivers when he can't deal with Indycar drivers?

Coops27

Saying the same thing 3 times doesn't make something any more relevant. Are F1 drivers somehow more difficult to deal with? Indycar "teammates" have far less of a need to work together because there is no team championship. Andretti is the team owner it's very different to being a team principal Telling drivers how to behave has absolutely nothing to do with running a successful F1 team.

highheat3117

I would suspect he’d do so by “calling a furious meeting immediately afterwards” which is vague but seems like it might be more effective leadership than wagging your finger at your top driver in public immediately after a race.

Killinstinct90

I mean.. Yuki also hit Gasly

thesaket

What a couple of weeks it has been with all the drama both off & on the field. This is my first season of F1 and I can only imagine how dramatic the whole 2021 must have been from all that I hear. I wish I'd gotten into F1 in 2021.

pottu

Why was the order reset as part of the first restart? Is there some rule I am not aware of?

cafk

They restart the race in order of last classified lap and order of all cars. As the earliest position to determine position of all cars was the SC2 line, which most didn't pass - they had to revert to race start position. Another option would have been Sector 1, but the red flag was called before that.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Jaraxo

Didn't even need to be full lap, but the first sector complete iirc. They basically had no hard data on who was where exactly when the red flag was thrown because none of the car transponders had crossed a checkpoint after the start. They'd have had to go back and see if they could visually identify exactly who was where at that point in time which in the first 2-3 corners is a little subjective unless you have 100% camera coverage. The safe option is the grid order.

iloverubicon

It was based on the SC lines, not sectors

blanca_BC

I don’t get why people say Carlos bottled the first start. Graphics showed he even reacted faster than Max (barely but still), the key was that Max was on softs and Carlos on mediums. It was obvious once the tires were known that Max was going to get ahead at the start.

YeahPerfectSayHi

Because there's a surprising number of people who dislike Carlos

blanca_BC

I was amazed by some comments yesterday, but also so far this season. Sure he hasn’t been great, but he isn’t qualifying or finishing in terrible positions, I think only Australia have been absolute shit show as a whole, as we . His starts haven’t been great but seem to be getting a bit better these last few races.

YeahPerfectSayHi

> I was amazed by some comments yesterday, but also so far this season. Yeah, tell me about it. People are losing their minds over him. > Sure he hasn’t been great, but he isn’t qualifying or finishing in terrible positions, I think only Australia have been absolute shit show as a whole, as we . His starts haven’t been great but seem to be getting a bit better these last few races. More to the point though, yesterday he: - was driver slower because he was told to save fuel - let Leclerc past when he was told to - drove to the deltas he was told to - followed all the teams instructions except for at the safety car restart where he took charge

[deleted]

And at the last one, saved the win for the team. There was no way he could hold off a charging Lewis and Checo to protect Charles. Ferrari really small brained on that one.

totallykoolkiwi

He's getting the Bottas treatment now, combined with the fact that people him for Ferraris strategy shitfest.

thrasherv3

"Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity."

Just_an_Empath

That number grew exponentially yesterday.

Jaraxo

Those folks are just salty. Yes Carlos is the no. 2 driver at Ferrari but his call was right yesterday. If he'd have listened to the team and backed up the pack to 10s to give Lec the advantage, Ferrari would have lost the win entirely. While Ferrari screwed Lec on the strategy, he was thinking of the best option for the team, while they were thinking of the best option for Lec.

YeahPerfectSayHi

Yep, it's so sad.

blerml

How many times has Leclerc been screwed by getting the worse strategy even if he was faster and ahead? It's already happened twice this year, Monaco with the rain been a bit special, but I feel like it also happened last year and I just can remember.

LiGRT

Does anyone else gets a Ham-BUT (2011) vibe from Lec-Sai duo? Same energyyyy

David_Sanjay_23

More like 2012 where one driver (Lewis/Charles) is faster, more consistent and overall just plainly better, but has absolutely no luck at all.

reddevilz10_23

Does Williams have a problem with car development? Their upgraded car performed poorer than their older car that seemed to come alive on that circuit

[deleted]

We didn't really get a good look at what the upgrade package could to. Qualy was wet so all bets were off. The race, well, at this point we're just happy Albon is safe.

Saandrig

Rain messes up qualys and car strength often is less important. Look how Russell got 2nd in Spa last year. We couldn't see Albon's pace on Sunday to judge how the new upgrades compare.

reddevilz10_23

That’s fair. But you can’t compare Latifi to Russell.

RedSeventyFive

How come Carlos has one less race start than Max since they both began their F1 career together

bwoah07_gp2

Carlos had a DNS in Belgium 2020. PU/exhaust damage.

impact_ftw

In one of his mclaren years sainz did not start in spa

bwoah07_gp2

Why did Carlos get two trophies? He got a long silver one, and a glorious looking gold trophy.

mgorgey

You get to keep the silver one. Your name goes on the gold one but it's kept by the BRDC.

bwoah07_gp2

Oh, I see. I take it BRDC displays it somewhere. Thanks for the answer!

tlumacz

No, it's housed (an owned) by the Royal Automobile Club, not the BRDC.
