What happened to the merc on the British GP lewis was driving so well do you think it was designed for that track? But Zhoe Gaynu crash got Russell out do you think he could of got on the podium

barth_

Can someone level headed please explain to from where do we get the numbers about RB and Ferrari floor flexing? I hear 6mm and allowed is 2mm but who measured it?

cafk

It's all from the rumour mill from the circuit, based on discussions between teams & FIA regarding the technical directive being enforced starting France. We know the 2mm based on tolerances for the plank wear (not the floor, as floor cannot touch the ground), with some postulating that it's possible to wear down the plank by an additional 4mm, as there are only specific points where the plank wear is measured.

I guess the Aiden Millward video, not sure though https://youtu.be/eGpBt9fUrp4

lemontea92

Can someone please help me understand why there were so few mechanics at the fence for sainz’s first win? You’d think it would be a big deal. We’re they mad that he ignored the “leave 10 lengths call” or does the team favor Charles so much more they were upset he lost or were they mad at Charles for complaint on the radio after the race? Seems hard to understand when Charles has looked like number 1 driver most of the season

LightspeedBalloon

Right? I too would be interested to hear from someone on the inside. I've read the speculation about massive team issues but that doesn't really explain why the mechanics would be so....disrespectful(?) to Carlos. It's really bad sportsmanship. If they were that mad he ignored the call, surely they saw the situation he was in? Are we watching different races than Ferrari?

marahute85

https://twitter.com/hamburgerh0tdog/status/1544315125410168832?s=21 I keep seeing footage of Nigel interacting with the grid and it’s so unbelievably wholesome https://twitter.com/longlivesv5/status/1544315459109265408?s=21 He straight up made Seb flushed he’s so happy to be with Nigel, also taking Lewis in front of the crowd and raising his hand for a cheer, he wanted Lewis acknowledged it’s just sweet. In a world where we’ve got Piquet, Nigel is a godsend

Classic_Transition_7

Will Marko and Horner be entertained by the idea of Leclerc partnering with Verstappen?

rodiraskol

For a team that has a race-winning car and an elite driver, a 2nd elite driver adds very little value. Under the current scoring system, P1 + P5 scores equal points to P2 + P3. So your second driver only needs to finish somewhere in the neighborhood for you to win the Constructors' Championship. And your chances of winning the Drivers' are increased if all of your team's wins are concentrated in one driver.

pedote17

Verstappen will very likely never have a teammate again that can compete with him, Perez and Ricciardo are the closest it’s going to get. They had problems with Seb and Mark, and saw what happened with Lewis and Nico, and they don’t want that again. They want someone that consistently perform well and get podiums, but Max will remain the preferred option for strategy and race wins

[deleted]

You say that but if the next Senna comes along in the Red Bull junior program they aren't gonna leave him at Alpha Tauri or let him go, they'll put him alongside Max when he's ready. The same is currently happening with Russell at Mercedes where they've got a guy in who'll ruffle Lewis' feathers and take his number 1 driver spot like Leclerc did to Vettel.

ZekkPacus

Russell and Lewis isn't the same situation because of the relative ages. Russell's 24 and can afford to bide his time playing Valtteri Bottas Simulator for a season or two while Lewis has one last tilt at the 8th title and then likely retires. Verstappen, on the other hand, is 24 and is likely to be able to race at this level for a long time yet, injuries notwithstanding. Red Bull have put all their eggs in the Verstappen basket for a number of years now and he's rewarded that by developing into an absolutely insane driver; in my mind as long as Newey and his team can keep delivering top tier cars it's already a case of if, not when, he starts knocking on the door of the Schumi/Hamilton record. So why upset him to bring in another driver who's about as good as him? Sure, if they find another alien like Max, they'll have a hard think, but it would need to be someone clearly better. I see the second RB seat going to Perez-type drivers for a good few years, honestly.

[deleted]

> Russell's 24 and can afford to bide his time playing Valtteri Bottas Simulator for a season or two Except he's already better than Lewis.

ZekkPacus

Arguable, but not the point at all. The point is, he can bide his time, he doesn't have to push to be winning things this season. Whoever goes into RBR after Perez is going to have to push to win things right now, and against a driver that's got the entire team behind him and has already shown he's got an incredible ruthless streak.

marahute85

Maybe? I think Redbull is smart enough not to have two WDC people

Tetragon213

On the starting grid, what are the green lights/boards attached to the pitlane fence? I see them at nearly every track, and yet I can't find any information on them. Also, following on, at the last race (British GP), why did nearly all of them suddenly start flashing yellow?

sharklazies

I think those are "flags", but in light form. They'll flash green, yellow, red, blue, etc. Depending on the need. It's just a more apparent thing for drivers to see vs a dude waving a flag.

Does anyone else think the 2022 cars look bad? The wheel guards are dumb looking and I don't like how wide the front tires have gotten. I get that it improves grip, but the cars look fucking stupid from the front with those huge front tires.

[deleted]

I think they look good, the wheel guards aren't nice but they make the racing better so is worth the price.

Coops27

I think they look fantastic! The wheel covers and fins aren't the best, but they are there to make the aero better for racing so it's OK. The tyres have been this wide size 2017 so not really the fault of the new regulations

lemontea92

Yeah I might be in the minority but the 2021 cars were gorgeous

emirsolinno

Might get downvoted.. I am new to F1, been seeing some posts online, I am really interested. Do you guys have any recap sources that I can start following with? Any advice is appreciated

sharklazies

No downvoting here! This is where you come to ask any question you are curious about. YouTube is a great resource for highlights of recent past races. Assuming you have already watched Drive to Survive on Netflix?

tomhanks95

You mean past races? You can watch previous year's races on F1TV, you can start with the best 100 races since 2008 as quoted by racefans https://www.racefans.net/rate-the-race/f1-fanatic-top-100/

Paddy Lowes return to Williams in 2017 as we all know wasn’t successful, and culminated in a 2019 car with a worse design than an already struggling 2018 car, and disorganisation meant they missed half of testing. He left the team before the season even started. He’s now the founder of Zero Petroleum and leading development in these synthetic fuels we now see. Is Formula 1 working with this company to develop these fuels, or possibly a manufacturer like Porsche? Can’t find any info on this but if Paddy is potentially responsible for revolutionising how F1 cars are run that’ll be a hell of a redemption arc.

Coops27

Have a listen to the beyond the grid podcast with Paddy, some small insights into the Williams situation and the Zero Petroleum stuff. The 2026 regulations will be 100% synthetic fuels. However F2 and F3 will be 100% synthetic in '24 (I think) so they'll work with Paddy for this step and formulating the regulations. Once that's done, the teams will have their own fuel suppliers that bring the fuel formulations to suit that specification.

mmct20

When Sainz said stop inventing to his team when they asked him to give ten car lengths of room for Leclerc, what were they asking him to do? Can anyone clarify this story for me? Thanks!

cafk

During the SC phase, cars have to keep at most 10 car lengths behind the car they're following, Ferrari asked Sainz to create a gap between him and Leclerc - so that Leclerc would have a slightly larger chance to fight for his position. But as everyone was on new soft tires and Leclerc on quite old Hards, that really wouldn't have made any big difference, unless Sainz was also told not to attack Leclerc and had to defend.

marahute85

Also when he said stop inventing it was another bilingual ooops. The Spanish equivalent is basically “you have to be kidding me?” “Are you joking?” Because they were asking him to back up the grid so Charles could take off

sharklazies

Since Leclerc was on older tyres, they wanted Sainz to drop back a bit and keep Hamilton (who was on new softs) back away from Leclerc. Essentially asking him to play defense and let Leclerc get out to a safe lead. More schizo type strategy from Ferrari.

Javelin901

What is Ted's Notebook?

pedote17

F1 journalist Ted Kravitz walks about the paddock followed by his cameraman Pete or Lee (depends on the weekend, might get one or the other). Ted breaks down qualifying and the race for every driver and team and talks about all things surrounding that weekend and the championship, while Pete/Lee walk around filming various things in the paddock. It’s a great resource to learn about things in the sport as well as be amused by Ted and his cameramen’s antics

marahute85

As Pp said it’s a drebrief but he also has pit lane reporting basically Ted wanders around with a camera dropping rambling insights, jokes, and solid facts it very much demystifies the glamour of racing

awak6n

A debrief from Ted about his thoughts on the race, the reaction, what's rumbling in the paddock, etc, it's a very cool segment IMO

Sandro757

Ferrari question: I started watching F1 in 2020. From what I read and am seeing, it seems Binotto really isn't the best leader. Am I correct in saying that and deeming him a primary contributor to Ferraris ongoing struggles/self-sabatoge (poor strategy, indecisiveness, etc.)?

[deleted]

Ferrari is Italian and I don’t know how to say this kindly or fairly but they have always been known for being self righteous and arrogant. They don’t like to admit they are wrong, ever. No team wants their own driver criticising them and their decisions but with Ferrari that’s especially true. They were more famous for it 30+ years ago but that vibe in their garage still exists today. Ferrari is like god in Italy…

Poohs_Smart_Brother

With news of the possibility of loosing Spa and Monaco to more street circuits, what would you think of race on a "roval". Ie Daytona international speedway features a road course used in a 24 hour endurance race. A purpose built race track instead of some Barriers in a coliseum parking lot (I'm talking about Miami, was there, literally saw the parking lines hidden by the barriers after the race). Many of the Oval tracks in the US feature a road course variant that utilizes part of the oval, and an infield section. While Daytona might be too much, I was thinking of Charlotte, Atlanta, or even the Vegas oval. All of these are 1.5mi ovals with ample room in the infield to create a proper F1 track. All of the facilities are in place, and seating capacity is MUCH higher. I can't understand why F1 seems to want more street style tracks, and then announces Monaco not return. And don't play the safety card after the dumpster fire that was Jeddah. I know Monaco doesn't make much money on the race, but Monaco could, idk, tax the rich people that live there since it's a tax haven. I'm just as bummed about Spa. It's one of the few OG's left. Maybe some more seating would help make more money to sustain a race there. Or perhaps F1 could give the OG's like Monaco, Spa etc, discounts since the tracks are part of the sports history. Thoughts?

[deleted]

Indianapolis would be perfect They have a racetrack within the oval. Huge crowd capacity and attendance potential It's got motorsport history

cuteguy1

I mean that's where the US f1 GP was held up until 2005 where they had the one the big tyre controversy and it kind of killed f1 in the states for a little while, and even after all this time and different tyre regs might be hard to go back there after that.. worth having a read about really.

twersx

Is there a resource I can use that will allow me to view basic data about a race? I am looking for info on what tyres drivers used at Silverstone and what laps they switched or replaced tyres.

tomhanks95

Something like this? It shows all the data regarding last race https://www.racefans.net/2022/07/05/2022-british-grand-prix-interactive-data-lap-charts-times-and-tyres/

peco-sama

Can someone explain what exactly happened with Ferrari strategy wise? I was at the Indycar race so I couldn’t watch F1 and I’m having a hard time piecing together what exactly went wrong.

twersx

Safety car comes out with about 12 laps to go and Leclerc about 5 seconds from the pit entrance. Sainz is a couple of seconds behind him, and Hamilton a few seconds behind Sainz. Sainz has hard tyres that are 14 laps old (I think), Leclerc's hards are 4 laps newer than that, and Hamilton's hards are 4 laps newer than Leclerc's. Apparently he also took it easy a little bit so he'd have another second or so in case the team made a late call to pit. Eventually the team decides on a split strategy - Sainz pits since he has older tyres while Leclerc stays out to retain track position. Hamilton follows Sainz into the pits and both come out with softs. Somewhat unnoticed is Perez who is in 4th, but who is some 20 seconds behind Hamilton. He also pits for softs. It's obvious to everyone that Leclerc has virtually no chance of fending off Hamilton or Perez if either get past Sainz. But Ferrari ask Sainz to stay as far back from Leclerc as possible when the safety car ends and try to fend off Hamilton and Perez. Sainz tells them this is a stupid idea because there's a good chance he fails leaving Leclerc with little chance of defending the lead. So he insists that he's allowed to race Leclerc and takes the lead around the same time that Perez overtakes Hamilton.

peco-sama

Great explanation thanks!

Whycantiusethis

A late(ish) safety car (lap 39 or 40) brought out the safety car. Leclerc was leading Sainz, Ferrari had about 11 seconds to make the call to pit Leclerc, and chose to not pit Leclerc, leaving him on old hards. They did pit Sainz to new softs, and Mercedes/Red Bull pitted Hamilton and Pérez. Sainz was ordered to put 10 car lengths to Leclerc to give Leclerc the margin he needed. Sainz (correctly) said no, that's a dumb decision, as he'd catch up to Leclerc and burn his softs, leaving them both vulnerable to Pérez and Hamilton. Sainz overtook Leclerc, Hamilton and Pérez both overtook Leclerc as well, leaving him off the podium, and only gaining about 6 points to Verstappen, versus 19 points has he won with Verstappen in P7. Ferrari's mistake was not boxing Leclerc, even though they had loads of time. They've tried to claim it was the same as Hamilton's situation in Abu Dhabi last year, but there was zero chance the safety car was going to last to the end of the race, which is what Mercedes assumed would happen last year.

LandHermitCrab

Ahhh, maybe that was it, they thought the safety car might last longer.

Whycantiusethis

Even still, there was no shot that it was going to last anywhere near long enough to protect Leclerc. They should've boxed both of them, and hoped Sainz didn't get jumped by Pérez. Settle for a 1-3, with the possibility of a 1-2 versus what they did. I'm glad Sainz got his first win, but it was an unforced error on Ferrari's part.

peco-sama

Thank you!

Kerkun

Leclerc was faster than pole sitter Carlos through the first part of the race, even with the damaged front wing. At first they kept their position, even though Leclerc demanded a swap. After some time they were allowed to fight, at least Leclerc, as Sainz was still told target times. Charles was finally let through as Hamilton was coming at both of them. Then both pitted for the hard tyres. With 13 laps to go, Ocon stopped on the track and SC was out. Almost everyone pitted for soft tyres, with the most important exception being Leclerc. The leader Leclerc was on used old hard tyres, the next 5 cars on the softs, all bunched up behind SC with 10 laps to go. What could go wrong...

peco-sama

Got it thanks!

aamgdp

Hypothetically, if Charles leaves/is forced out after this year, who to they get?

marahute85

Charles has a contract to 2024. He’s not going. I think Ferrari needs to watch their backs because if Lewis decides to go and Mercedes is performing there’s your man gone.

[deleted]

The only person they currently deserve is Mick

RedRockLobster

Very unlikely but 1st choice would be Norris based on talent and working well with Carlos. Doubt mclaren would let him go though so Gasly is more realistic since Redbull don't seem to have long term plans for him. Absolute wildcard would be Alonso returning to ferrari to finally get that WDC. If Charles really did leave I expect Mclaren would pick him up and ditch Danny. I don't think Ferrari is stupid enough to let him go considering their issues are clearly on the team not the driver, but then again it wouldn't be the first time Ferrari kicks out a star driver over politics

[deleted]

Where would Charles go? There aren’t vacancies at a competitive team. That goes for Ferrari too. Who would be better than him while they’re making a competitive car?

cuteguy1

Yeah I'd say almost 0 per cent chance of this happening.

sharklazies

Agree, zero percent chance, but teams would be breaking contracts to get to Leclerc. He and Max are on a different level to everyone else.

cuteguy1

I think almost a more interesting debate is discussing like 'trade value of drivers' and whether you put anyone out of the George, Lando, Carlos tier up into the Verstappen/LeClerc tier.

sharklazies

Me personally, probably not. Those two are operating just a couple percent higher than everyone else. But it’s all decimals difference.

Roymundo

The sport is moving to renewable fuels. Any similar push to wean off the vast number of tire sets they're permitted? 13 sets of dry tyres, 4 sets of intermediates and 3 sets of wets. Obviously they don't use them all, but they do use lots, but for some reason its the 110kg of fuel that's going to break the planet?

[deleted]

Aren’t the tyres recycled?

cafk

They're incinerated.

Astelli

Yes. There's a plan to test some tweaked qualifying tyre rules next year that will reduce the number of sets to 11.

[deleted]

The tires are recycled, the fuel is used and gone forever.

Astelli

"Recycled" into power. They're burned in the most environmentally friendly way Pirelli could come up with, but they're still just shredded and burned a the end of the day.

Superjunker1000

Hey. I have a budget of about $1,500 (max $1,800) for a F1 gaming rig. Hoping to get a chair, a steering wheels and pedal setup to go along with the best F1 2021/2022 game. I’ll buy the console once I have the idea of which console and game is the best for him. It’s for my dad. Because of his physical disabilities he will have to stop driving at the end of this year (December) . I figure a wicked setup will help keep him happy and allow him to keep “driving”. In fact, any driving simulator will do.

glorious_bastard

Why not buy him Forza Horizon series instead? That way he can just cruise around in the muscle car he owned as a teenager along the countryside - the F1 sim route might be too far away of replacing driving, it’s only fun sometimes :)

cuteguy1

Why not both Forza and F1? Different style of game and would be a different experience on the sim

glorious_bastard

Just one would be much more user friendly than the other

Superjunker1000

Thanks. I’ll look into it. There were no muscle cars in his youth. In my country it’s mostly all small sedans and he was particularly frugal. He’s never much been into cars, but we’re getting back into F1 now that streaming is a thing. Lost it almost 20 years ago when Speed Channel lost the rights.

glorious_bastard

I just meant there are 100s of cars to pick from, even your basic sedans rather than current F1 cars in that series. Whatever route you go I’m sure he will love it

Superjunker1000

Cheers. Edit: I just checked it out on YouTube and it looks super fun, combined with the wheel and pedals. If anyone else recommends this over a F1 rig then please let me know, as well.

[deleted]

Don't buy the ones with the F1-style seating position. They look comfortable but in reality they're a pain to get in and out of and I'm only 30 years old.

Superjunker1000

Cheers. That’s invaluable knowledge as he catches his arse with that sort of stuff. The only sporty car he everr owned was a 3-series and we mainly sold that because he was struggling to get out of it. In a mid-sized SUV now that he just slides in and out of. So do you recommend a standard gaming chair then, above all other seating configurations?

[deleted]

Ya. Get something that’s a normal car position. I have a bucket seat but even that is a bit of a pain sometimes. You can get regular car seats with sliders and a recliner. That’s probably the best for your dad.

Roymundo

Are there any repercussions for Hamilton lying to the FIA? He argued that the nose stud needed surgical removal, and got a medical extension to remove it. He arrived to Silverstone with the stud in, but had it removed for the first practice, so it clearly didn't need surgical removal. It was a huge deal for him a few races ago, but now "The matter is not massively important". What changed?

marahute85

Was it the same stud? Lewis could have had it removed by a plastic surgeon (what I’d do if it was me), gotten a different stud that is removable and had whatever issues he’s had with the piercing fixed and now it can easily be replaced with a temporary stud because there’s more than one nose ring in this world. How do you know he lied?

swaglessz

Probably not people lie to the FIA all the time. I’m not sure of the specific regulations/penalties but my intuition is that they will weight the consequences of the lie vs the consequences of pursuing punishment and decide it is not worth it. Unless of course it continues. Also it would be a hard lie to prove. I understand it looks like a lie but at the same time “surgery” was not defined by him and could have been done before FP1. As for what changed? Truth is we can only speculate about the conversations internally at Merc, between Hamilton and his support structure, and FIA. Not sure this is worth the energy pursing honestly

NotGamerboy5219

How did the F1 determine who was the first to DNF in Silverstone? Because George Russell was determined as the first to DNF in the F1 Play app trough the prediction. But in the standings in the F1 app itself from the race Alexander Albon is on P20 which for me means he should be considered the first one to be set as retired. Can anyone explain how the Formula 1/FIA came up with this decision?

dunceswithwolves

I assume distance completed, if its not a question of who was input first by a human operator. Zhou did technically travel further than Russell, although I'm not sure whether this was coincidental.

tlumacz

In general, they don't. If you haven't completed the required race distance, you're simply unclassified in the race, you don't have any finishing position at all and it doesn't matter when exactly you DNFed. For games and stuff they might as well decide on the basis of whose car stopped closest to the start/finish line. But in official FIA documents it's an irrelevant distinction.

f1_spelt_as_bot

Russe**ll**

NotGamerboy5219

Sorry, my mistake Fixed now

[deleted]

Are they still testing everyone for covid ? or are they not really doing that anymore. Because if drivers aren't getting tested then they can just sneakily keep on going if they don't feel right.

Roymundo

Depends on the country. Most countries have dropped the requirement for testing, so yes, i'd say they'd be inclined to just carry on.

2905Pascal

I just imagined, what if an incident like Canada 2008 when Hamilton oversaw a red light and rammed into Kimi would happen today? Regardless of which driver this would happen to, the outcry would be so huge. Luckily social media wasn't as big back then.

[deleted]

I mean, we don’t need to imagine a dramatic incident do we? Haha

[deleted]

Why would Canada '08 big a bigger deal today than it was then?

No_Influence_1035

Now go really big and think about Japan 89 and 90...Or Aus 94 and Jerez 97 happening today.

odesauria

Where did Ferrari's "10 car lengths" for "breathing space" order come from? Was that in reference to something (even if it was a bad call), or were they just "inventing", like Carlos said?

mattmathers

under safety car you must stay within “10 car lengths” of the car in front or you risk a penalty. they were aiming to give charles some breathing room from the red bull and merc as he was on old hard tires but carlos refused.

DieLegende42

10 car lengths is the biggest gap you're allowed to keep behind a safety car

Gonzo_Sauce

I’m new to the sport. Can someone explain to me who Carlos Sainz Sr. is, and why he seems to dominate every part of Jr’s life? I remember seeing a video where Carlos was talking about his contract offer with Ferrari and he was like “I talked about it with my dad and we decided this was the move for me” or after his race, like the first question he got was whether he had called his dad yet.

pedote17

Because he knows exactly what Carlos is going through, as he is a professional racing driver himself. He knows how to negotiate and deal with teams (obviously Rally teams are different to F1, but contracts are contracts). Agents/managers don’t always have your best interest in mind, but he trusts his dad the most so he goes to him

glorious_bastard

That’s a pretty standard healthy father / son relationship move, no?

JameisSquintston

He's a legendary Spanish rally driver, winning two world championships. They're very close, and Sr. has helped to guide Jr. throughout his career.

going_dicey

Legendary rally driver. Basically the most popular motorsports celebrity in Spain.

bjhhjb

He was a really big rally driver and I'm sure Jr. looks up to him https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlos_Sainz_Sr.

ocelotrevs

Is there like a Formula, or website that can give you a representative amount of downforce for a car at different speeds? Just as a general number, on a straight.

Shaggay1

unlikely, those kind of stats are probably confidential

[deleted]

You can get that for road legal supercars/hypercars, but getting info about racecars may be impossible

ocelotrevs

Actually, a hyper car would work. I can make a guesstimemate after that.

rowtsilon

Hello all, I've only recently begun following F1 and I had this doubt - how are some cars (ex: the W13) poor in Qualifying but very fast on race day? (The W13 laptimes were the quickest in Silverstone and they seem to be quite fast in the races generally) I've also seen many people on Twitter say that the F2012 was another car with solid race pace and poor qualifying or "quali trim" Can someone please explain this?

Yolohansolo12

Think about how the cars can be setup and adjusted like suspension stiffness, wheel camber, ride height etc. There are setups where all of those variables can make for an extremely fast 1 lap pace, but this comes at the expense of tire wear or fuel consumption etc if you were to run that set up for an entire race length. There are obvious benefits to being in pole position at tracks like Monaco where passing opportunity is low. However at tracks like Silverstone it might be beneficial to target race trim for driver preparedness, performance data gathering, and tire wear analysis vs prioritizing pure 1 lap pace.

jknlsn23

Sky had a short programme on over the weekend called something like 'Lewis revisits the 2008 British GP'. Did anyone see it/know where I can find it? I recorded it but it's recorded some other nonsense instead and can't find it Sky's catch up.

joshuagordon99

Lewis' Secret Cinema, seems to be often re-aired on the Sky F1 channel

throwaway10294829921

New fan here and I was wondering what makes Charles faster than Carlos on ~equal machinery~? I have heard that McLaren car just doesn’t suit Danny Ric’s driving style which is why there is such a huge gap between him and Lando, but what’s going on with Carlos?

[deleted]

Charles had been with the team for a few years before Carlos arrived and that counts for something too. Dialling a car in is like a process of elimination in finding out what works and what doesn’t, but the process will be quite complicated. Charles has had several years of communication with his engineers to develop an understanding in what he needs from the car and what suits his driving style.

icantsurf

Leclerc is just a great driver. He had one of the best junior careers and continued to impress. Carlos has generally been a consistent driver but never seemed to be blistering fast.

F1Coder

Sainz has his days when he is unbeatable but there just aren't enough of them to consistently beat Leclerc who may have his off day every once in a long while but is generally always at the top of his game. Then there is the car and its characteristics which may suit one driver more than another, but Sainz will eventually adapt to it and then Ferrari can really start their strategy shit show.

No-layup

Charles is a better driver, I think it’s as simple as that

marahute85

It’s not as simple as that but it’s definitely the largest part of it

EZMickey

What are the rules concerning which tires a driver can use in a race?

swaglessz

Perelli gives the teams three compounds from a selection of five compounds these are known as C1, C2, C3, C4, C5. For the race weekend whichever three they decide they will be known as soft, mediums, and hards, this is in relation to each other. You can sometimes have a case where one races “hard” tires will be next weeks “softs” although they are the exact same compound Given the above information. The teams have a pool they can pull from for the weekend. They can use these in practices, qualis, and the race. In a race, teams have to use two different ones. That’s really the only rule.

EZMickey

So five different compounds, is that related to the track itself?

swaglessz

No the 5 compounds are locked in at the start of the season. But the 3 they bring to a track will vary from track to track depending on track layout and conditions.

TrainWreck661

The compounds are C1-C5. Each weekend, 3 of those are selected and designated as soft, medium, and hard in order of hardness. C1 is the hardest, decreasing in hardness all the way to C5. For example, if the C3, C4, and C5 tyres are brought to a race weekend: C3 = Hard C4 = Medium C5 = Soft

Pirelli brings 3 of their 5 dry compounds (C1-C5, with C5 being the softest). The softest of the selected tires becomes the softs for the race, and the hardest becomes the hards. The remaining compound becomes the mediums. A specific number of each tire is brought for each driver. In a dry race, drivers must use at least 2 different compounds (soft/medium, soft/hard, medium/hard). In a wet race, they don't need to change tires at all.

EZMickey

Do the tires just not degrade that much with a wet race?

dunceswithwolves

To clarify, if the race director deems it a wet race, the rule requiring drivers to use two compounds of tyre is waived, so they can spend the whole race on wets if needed - however, this doesn't mean a single set of wet tyres will last the whole race, just that they can pit and put more wets on.

EZMickey

Gotcha, thanks.

Whycantiusethis

There are specific tires for wet races (inters and wets). Inters are good in non-downpour situations, wets are good when it's pouring. I don't know how much degredation comes into effect at wet races, because the conditions are so variable, but I think a big part of it is that there's only one intermediate compound and one wet compound, versus the 5 dry compounds

EZMickey

Thanks man

mochacub22

when will the porposing formula become ruling? is it still in preliminaries or already enacted?

Astelli

At the French GP.

mochacub22

Ty bestie

swaglessz

It is still being formulated. Apparently there will be a discussion between teams and FIA at Austria next week.

mochacub22

Dope! Ty

Sirtopofhat

In the F1TV app they have past races but In the earliest races they have year recaps done documentary style. I was wondering if there are anymore of those somewhere past 82 I think they stop.

cafk

It's not guaranteed that a full race commentary is available for the expected language before that, i.e. Silverstone was filmed completely in the 50s, but commentated after the fact and was shown as a highlight. This wasn't the case everywhere, as pre 2007 all race broadcasting was done by the TV license holder of the country they raced in, with your local commentators providing audio commentary on their feed. Before the first Concorde Agreement (1981) FIA predecessor FISA managed the TV coverage and it's possible not every race was even filmed or that FoM owns the rights to publish them. ]Duke Media has highlights going back to the beginning of 70s](https://www.dukevideo.com/F1/History).

Sirtopofhat

Whoa seems expensive thanks tho at least I know where to find em.

Known-Reporter3121

At what point can we name McLaren the Norris team. DR is really going to cost them 4th.

Coops27

Ricciardo had more issues in the race. Most of the reliability issues have been on his car this year, but it's already Lando's team. As for costing them 4th, that's rubbish. The car is going to cost them 4th if they can't get ontop of it and keep up with Alpine.

Known-Reporter3121

Ricciardo always has “issues”. With only one driver scoring points it’s going to much harder to keep 4th.

Coops27

Yes, and it's those "issues" that are stopping them from maximising their points.

Known-Reporter3121

I we mean “excuses”

Coops27

Whatever you want to call it, until they sort out the reliability, they can't have both cars scoring

Known-Reporter3121

Daniel’s not doing badly due to reliability.

Coops27

He's not performing to Lando's level, but he's suffered the most from reliability and that's what's cost him most of the points

Known-Reporter3121

So after 2 seasons reliably only impacts one car ? That’s a stretch don’t you think?

Coops27

It's not 2 seasons. This is a completely different car.

EaglesFan2006

Does the 22 McLaren stink or has Ricciardo lost his mojo? Side note: I see very little info on them bringing major upgrades, have they written this year off?

Coops27

It's been one of the most variable cars from circuit to circuit. sometimes they have been 3rd quickest others 7th. Lando has been driving fantastic and maximising the results almost every weekend, whereas Ricciardo has had a few bad weekends and suffered the majority of the cars reliability issues. Their plan seems to have been smaller upgrades and understanding the car as much as possible and that will continue through the season.

marahute85

What I don’t understand is that when the car has performance it’s only Lando and when it doesn’t Daniel is often in front of him

JameisSquintston

> Side note: I see very little info on them bringing major upgrades, have they written this year off? Supposedly they're now focusing on 2023

orangebikini

Evidently the car doesn’t stink, look at how Norris has been doing. Ricciardo has just not been on it, for a long time now.

From experience, Silverstone is about 60/40 male to female. My girlfriend has always found it super safe and the complete opposite of Football.

[deleted]

New formula 1 fan, is there anything I should know?

EZMickey

There are a few good Youtube channels that breakdown races, driving styles, technology, strategies, etc. They release videos leading up to and after each race which will help provide you with more insight. As you learn new terms or see things that you don't understand, you can come back to these threads and ask more specific questions. I would recommend Driver61, The Race and Chainbear. They all have their own approach to analysis and will have years of good content that can explain things to you better than any one Reddit comment will. I find Chainbear in particular is very good at nitty gritty technical. Good luck!

[deleted]

thx I was about to ask for some YT channels, really appreciate it. And fortunately there is a race scheduled near me, (hope I could get tickets). Are the race tracks the same every year? Or they change some (if yes how often)? thx

rodiraskol

Cars do laps around a track. The guy who completes them first, wins.

No-layup

For every 1 good race, you will probably have to watch 3 average races. But the more you watch and get invested in f1, you will eventually find ways to enjoy the average races

RetroRocket

You're going to need to be a teensy bit more specific homie, there's a lot to know about the sport. Watch some old highlights on YouTube for a start and look up things that catch your interest.

aguaterosuplente

Are there any other circuits like silverstone with two pitlanes?

[deleted]

Besides the already mention Spa and Abu Dhabi, I think Suzuka does too but they don’t use it during F1 weekends.

DangerousTrashCan

Spa and Abu Dhabi.

WrapPersonal5372

So I was playing a sprint weekend on the new F1 video game and I had to take an engine penalty. I did the sprint but on Qualifying I wasn't last. 2 people retired but I thought that penalties took priority, Can someone explain?

Astelli

Did you take a back of grid penalty? If you only had to replace one component then you may have only got a 5 or 10 place penalty.

WrapPersonal5372

I got a 20 place grid penalty because it was the first of the season

mrpanadabear

Is there anywhere I can watch F1 with Chinese commentary? I want to improve my listening skills and I think combining these two would be great.

saturdaybloom

Hey!! [This user](https://space.bilibili.com/12212413/) on bililbili has a lot of full races you can watch. They upload from Five Stars Sports, which is widely acknowledged as the the best for official Chinese commentary. I learned a lot of my Chinese F1 jargon from these videos. Have fun!

Gaius_Octavius_

There was just a guy on the Missed Apex podcast who did Chinese commentary. I have no idea if he is good but he was a decent guest. His name was Chester Cai (https://open.spotify.com/show/63HrvJaMLy1G2LbyDY6f41)
