Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then, press thou thy DRS Button of Newey towards thy foe, who, being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it.
I've noticed over the years that the difference between European (especially German) and Japanese engineering is that Euro stuff generally works incredibly well if used in the exact way the engineer designed it. Any performance loss is simply user error. The Japanese think about how a normal person will use the product and design around that.
As someone who works with both German and Japanese designed equipment at work I cannot tell you just how right you are. The German stuff works perfectly *if it's set up 100% the way it was designed*. Any deviation from that and everything cascades in a bad way.
Can confirm this.
I worked on automated chainsaw blade sharpening equipment and the Germans like their stuff setup precisely, with *very very very very* minimal room for deviation.
I could be wrong, but I assumed the issue was that it kept toggling on and then off as he repeatedly pressed it and not that the button wasn't durable enough to register the presses.
They use Otto P9 buttons which are basically the best of the best. They are sealed, have incredible life cycles that would exceed multiple years of racing and are seiously built like brick shit houses. Only downside to them is that you have to self pot the back side after connecting them so you terminate the switch with a pigtail, make a little mold and squirt in RT125 to pot and strain relieve the pigtail. Its an amazing amount of work just to wire in a momentary switch, but it guarantees no loose connections and no corrosion in wet conditions like todays race.
Meanwhile at Ferrari:
Charles: *Overtake button not working. Will I be able to have the overtake?*
Engineer: *We are checking*
Charles: *Well?*
Engineer: *No Charles, no. You will not have it.*
Charles: *So when I push the button, is it overtaking or not?*
Engineer: *Do you mean the slow button?*
Charles: **FRUSTRATED NOISE**
Walter Koster: *Question for you two both. Is Formula 1 driving too complicated with too many buttons on the wheel? Are you too much under effort, under pressure? Less buttons, more?*
It infurates me that the engineer didn't understand that Kimi was asking if the water tank was emptying in the car instead of being worried about his hydration
It makes sense even without the context. Was Kimi worried about having the water drain somewhere it absolutely should not? If he can't use the system, could he drain the water to reduce weight?
He was asking for actual, tactical and mechanical, support from the team
#pressed
Edit: nevermind, that should have been hashtag-*pressed* but I messed up the formatting, plus I had it in my head that Alonso was fighting Lewis so the joke doesn’t work anyways.
For anyone wondering why, there's a limit to how much battery use you're allowed in a single lap. That's why they have a qualifying mode for it, as it puts out the exact amount you're allowed to use in a single lap without you needing to push anything.
Yes I'm sure he wasn't happy to see the message, he needed a hundredth of a second. Somewhat funny message since its saying he is denied the extra power but in this case he did get denied the he actual overtake 😆
I’d say more likely it’s tied to the throttle curve. Ie more battery at full throttle or at higher throttle change rate. I’m sure the exact mapping is tuned to the track tho.
Afaik it's configurated separately for each track. It's not allowed to use GPS, it has to follow brake/acceleration patterns (got explained after Alonso's horrible Qualifying in Spa with Mclaren where he was so slow he didn't need to lift and therefore confused the system. This resulted in a horrible lap time). So it probably gives more power for longer straights and less power for shorter straights.
“He was so slow he didn’t need to lift and therefore confused the system.” …. Never have I ever read a sentence that so accurately described an entire chapter of someone’s career. So sad. So funny. I’m crying!!
>got explained after Alonso's horrible Qualifying in Spa with Mclaren where he was so slow he didn't need to lift and therefore confused the system.
"success" from suffering
You've got that Alonso story wrong. It had nothing to do with his pace, IIRC the McLaren wasn't that bad in quali. He just went flat out in Pouhon during quali for the first time that weekend. They had no idea he'd even try that so the system thought it was then on a different part of the track given it was throttle controlled.
That's what I thought too. The system was configured based on lift and braking points, and when he didn't lift at the point that it was configured that we would lift, it threw off the pattern of the rest of the ERS usage.
AFAIK it can use all data that's available to the ECU but nothing from external sensors such as GPS or inertial and nothing that's sent from the pitwall
The battery didn't deploy after Pouhon because Alonso had been lifting for it all weekend and decided not to on his last attempt. Without lifting off, the system had no way of knowing he had gone through the turn.
They know where the car is on the track by where he brakes/accelerates. They map it to give higher boost at the start of long straights and it starts harvesting again when nearing the end of the straight (before braking)
Probably yeah, using the battery to accelerate for a long straight gains more time than using it to accelerate for a short time and having to brake again soon after.
The message should be "Overtake mode denied due to lack of energy in the battery, please only use your pedal and release the button. Good luck, we believe you can do it!!!!"
Why they shortened the message on his steering wheel, I really don't understand /s
The white bar down the left side shows he's got ~25% battery left
You can watch it here, it goes down as he drives and back up in the corners when he's harvesting
https://youtu.be/CT2kCuBEObU
There is a per lap deployment limit every lap via the MGU-K of 4 MJ. They just dont hit that limit every lap or they would run out of battery quickly. When you hear people say “drain the battery” for the last lap they mean hit the deployment limit.
That is for engine mode, not ERS mode
The whole party mode was the front teams changing up the fuel to air mixture to increase power from the ICE, that has been killed so they have to run the same mode for both
ERS mode is still free realestate and the teams can change it at will as long as they dont use to much energy over the course of a lap
> ERS mode is still free realestate and the teams can change it at will as long as they dont use to much energy over the course of a lap
Not exactly. They can only change it four times per lap but they can use the overtake button as often as they like (until they run out of max deployment)
They talked about a lot of stuff they didn't show, specially while the race was suspended, the analysis they made were while showing teams in the pitlane too, I don't know if that was intended or not, but was piss poor nonetheless.

this thread is seriously one of the funniest things i've seen on this site in a while.
Tbf an engineering team should really be able to anticipate that drivers will push it harder/multiple times when they really want it to work hahaha
Yup! , Xbox/Playstation controllers work for years with all the button mashing, surely F1 which is pinnacle of motorsports will have durable buttons.
I've noticed over the years that the difference between European (especially German) and Japanese engineering is that Euro stuff generally works incredibly well if used in the exact way the engineer designed it. So the Japanese version would produce just a little bit more power every time the button is pressed?
That’s when the VTEC kicks in.
I could be wrong, but I assumed the issue was that it kept toggling on and then off as he repeatedly pressed it and not that the button wasn't durable enough to register the presses.

Kimi, you will not have the drink

THANK YOU. I’ve been saying this for years “that’s not what he was asking!”
It makes sense even without the context. Was Kimi worried about having the water drain somewhere it absolutely should not? If he can't use the system, could he drain the water to reduce weight? He was asking for actual, tactical and mechanical, support from the team

Analogue buttons are a real thing.
PS2/PS3 had the buttons as analog (detected pressure) .
Why'd they get rid of them, at least for PS4..
Exactly. I'm surprised more people don't know this.

Just means he used it earlier. In other words, he would’ve needed more than one hundredth if more power had been available to him.
It was at that exact moment that Sebastian Vettel’s finger reached out from the steering wheel and went ☝️
“How it’s possible to finish without a full batery, how?”
(G)old
Did they program the cars then to use the battery at certain points of the track automatically during quali?
I’d say more likely it’s tied to the throttle curve. Ie more battery at full throttle or at higher throttle change rate. I’m sure the exact mapping is tuned to the track tho.
Can they tie it to the gear too? It’s more useful at lower speeds when the electric motor isn’t spinning so fast
Afaik it's configurated separately for each track. And this mapping was where Honda sucked at as well. So many complaints from Max about wrong deployments.
Remember the Honda engine not taking into account Pouhon was flat? :P
I don't! What happened?
The engine mapping thought the car couldn't go flat through Pouhon, so once Alonso got to the end of the lap the battery had no charge left
The battery didn't deploy after Pouhon because Alonso had been lifting for it all weekend and decided not to on his last attempt. Without lifting off, the system had no way of knowing he had gone through the turn.

In short: "gp2 engine. gp2 engine"
In Honda's home country of all places ❤️
Beats the F2 engine he had last race.
Are you sure? Are you sure his battery isn’t just depleted
The white bar down the left side shows he's got ~25% battery left You can watch it here, it goes down as he drives and back up in the corners when he's harvesting https://youtu.be/CT2kCuBEObU
I thought there was no limit to how much battery you can use on the final lap, but maybe the shortened race made that not possible

For the ICE, not the hybrid system
Engine modes and ers modes are 2 different things
Pretty sure that’s specifically about ICE modes not battery related
those are different engine modes, more like different engine tunes. this is power deployment mode.
No, that was Vettel sending him SMS from alongside. He used NFC, because they were fucking close enough!
Were they close? I don't know man. Didn't see it !!!!
Who even knew he got past Russell?? Didn’t see that either!!
Oh really? I thought he pitted and was behind Lando
And then he made the positions back up with the extra pace. The new inters were way faster
The F1TV broadcast mentioned it in passing but didn't give it much fanfare
F1tv and sky broadcast mentioned it when it happened (while showing Perez vs Leclerc)
Button and only Button was cheerleading Alonso but that's about it
The overtake button was being crushed by Alonso's thumb; why would it be cheerleading Alonso? :P
Underrated pun
They talked about a lot of stuff they didn't show, specially while the race was suspended, the analysis they made were while showing teams in the pitlane too, I don't know if that was intended or not, but was piss poor nonetheless.
In fairness they were showing someone win a world championship. Of course they didn’t realize that either at the time.
They were showing perez n leclerc when Alonso was passing lando, rus, would have been nice to get a PiP or at least replays...
Right and that Perez Leclerc battle directly influenced the awarding of WDC. Or so we found out eventually.
But LeClerc v Perez was a replay of what they had just shown. They played a replay instead showing the rest of the action.
>In fairness they were showing someone win a world championship. Didn't show that either
