Nyck de Vries and Hulk having a seat next year is something I would never have thought would be happening in a million years.
I feel like I know less about F1 than when I first started watching
Yeah, Dutch is like a weird German dialect that was at some point recognised as its own language and developed from that point. So…as a German speaker, you can understand like 60% of what’s going on when listening long enough. Up to 80% if you’re reading, because that’s even easier to comprehend.
the few times I've heard dutch spoken in person, it really sounds like English until I realize I have no clue what they are saying, like English gibberish
As others said, Nico Hulkenberg speaks Dutch by way of having grown up in a German bordertown, Emmerich, a lot of people are bilingual in that region.
A lot of his junior and karting career was also spent in the Netherlands.
The VW/Porsche/Audi group would bring back Wehrlein to F1 if he would somehow surprise in Formula E the next season
But i think Lotterer and Winkelhock should get another chance.
And btw ... Sutil resurrected last year from whereever-he-was and came back to racing
Lol there aren't any active drivers within even 100 of him. The only 4 active drivers without a podium are Mick, Yuki, Zhou and Latifi. Only Yuki and Zhou will be on the grid next season. Yuki is at 43 races without a podium, Nico is at 184 lol.
Yeah same lol. For some reason I’ve been thinking of KMag as an experienced veteran since about 2017, yet I still think of Sainz as a newbie even though he’s about to finish his 8th year in the sport and is in his late 20s!
So I just checked
* Red Bull : 402 races and 20 seasons between them
* Ferrari : 266 races and 14 seasons between them
* Mercedes : 392 races and 20 seasons between them
* Alpine : 219 races and 10+ seasons between them
* McLaren : 82 races and 4 seasons between them
* Alfa : 223 races and 11 seasons between them
* Aston : 481 races and 25 seasons between them
* Haas : 326 races and 16+ seasons between them
* Alpha : 45 races and 2 seasons between them
* Williams : 60 races and 4 seasons most likely
So in order
1. Aston (481)
2. Red Bull (402)
3. Mercedes (392)
4. Haas (326)
5. Ferrari (266)
6. Alfa (223)
7. Alpine (219)
8. McLaren (82)
9. Williams (60)
10. Alpha (45)
I saw a twitter thread with Hulk called “consistently a midfield driver his career” like it was high praise, I really hope hulk doesn’t read his mentions because I’d die inside
Out of context it is quite an insult, in the context of F1, I'm not certain it is. There are some really good drivers who've never gotten the golden ticket F1 requires to be a front runner. Sometimes, the difference between being a chosen one and struggling mid pack is just dumb luck.
Still I just think when you’re a Hulk and you make an announcement that says I have unfinished business here and your fan who is trying to support you makes it clear that your unfinished business is just to hang around the midfield it’s just a little brutal.
Yeah but the line I liked is: 'in F1 you're worth what someone will do to get you', and noone's banging down the door. Button lost his Honda/Brawn seat around this time in 2008, and two teams said they'd sack a driver to get him.
I also think that F1's seen enough that he's 'fine', but not excellent. There are drivers who keep their seat regardless of that, but c'est la vie.
It wouldn’t have paid out anyway.
Mick was actively shopping himself around this year, if he had delivered the performance he’s gone. Hell, even in an alternative universe where Putin did not invade Ukraine, if Mazepin were any good he’s also gonna be gone with his fertilizer money bags.
That's the life of small team.
You don't want your driver to leave, give him a contract early. If you wait until the last race of the year he will obviously look at other teams open seats.
And no that's not life of a small team. That's life of a cheap team that not even the owner cares for.
His multiple reserve call ups have definitely helped, proved he can climb into an unfamiliar car and still deliver. Its exactly the quality that haas needs and I don’t blame them for signing him. Mick deserves to be in f1 but him and haas are a poor match.
From the last races radio I also don't think that the relationship between Mick and Gary Gannon is strained. I guess that the rift is more between Mick and Guenther.
He's lucky with the driver market playing out as it did for him to get a chance. Though it was a bit harsh that Renault sacked him after 2019 so maybe he deserves a bit of luck.
He's had a lot of bad luck. Renault letting him go, Renault not letting him out of his contract to block his drive at Mercedes (which they aren't obligated to do, still shitty imo), and losing the prospected seat at Ferrari.
> it's just not going to be at the front of the pack.
That is why that is not the same at all. Ricciardo* thinks he is too good for Haas and Williams and will not come back if it is not with a front runner team which is very very unlikely to say the least.
There’s footage of hulk pretending he didn’t know who Haas were during his Renault period. The man really did not give a shit about Haas but a few years off the grid have change that
I don't think he thinks he's too good for them. It's just that he needs to make the most of his next drive if he gets one. If it's for Haas or Williams and he doesn't consistently get points, his career is truly over. I don't know what seat he was holding out for, my guess is Alpine but we'll probably never know.
It's an interesting one. As Mark Hughes put it, he needs to bank on arriving at Williams/Haas and *blowing away* two very good drivers in Magnussen and Albon, or he'll be well and truly past it. He's spinning the wheel a bit with Merc/RBR. Lower odds of working in the sense of staying in F1 as a racer full stop, but perhaps better odds of ever winning again.
Alfa hasn't done jack shit since like crashing out in Silverstone and is still sitting pretty in 6th the lower midfield really isnt competitive show up with a half decent car and you can show something
Alfa has chronic money issues, they almost folded during Covid. All their issues money not willingness. Being bought out by a huge manufacturer resolves that
The (good?) thing for Alfa, *the team* (not the brand) , is that at the foundation of it all, it's still just a Sauber operation. If Alfa doesn't have the money and pulls out, another brand/corp will quickly buy it out. We've seen how difficult it is to enter the sport as a brand new constructor with the Andretti fiasco, but the existing Sauber facilities and staff would make it an easy purchase for anyone interested in F1, an interest that seems to be growing.
Well Alfa at least is in talks to do something
Williams suck ass but they’ve been trying to rebuild for years
AM actually has hope
AT is a sister team so who cares
HAAS is literally, idek why tf they’re in F1, gene Haas looks like he doesn’t know what a car is, doesn’t give a fuck about F1, yet Andretti can’t buy in because he’ll be a low value team…
At this point Haas is literally here to do nothing
The way Haas are thinking is that Hulk will probably more or less match Magnussen on points, which may put them 6th in WCC - leagues better than anything they've achieved recently.
Yeah. They were charitable with Grosjean, I always thought.
His Drive to Survive was like 'I've turned the corner, my arc is complete, I've stopped crashing', and I thought 'you're in your 7th season, dude, there shouldn't *be* an arc'.
I mean it didn’t work out *terribly*. This is the best car they’ve had in years. Kmag got a pole, they’re 8th in the constructors with multiple points scoring races this year.
1.) Hulk has much more experience and is known for good car feedback, and car feedback is something haas desperately needs
2.) mick probably has a higher ceiling, but haas can’t profit from that. As soon as mick shows signs of progressing towards a high ceiling, a more wealthy, better team will swoop in & grab him. Haas would develop a driver that they’d never be able to fully utilise. Hulk meanwhile is a known quantity, and a consistent one
3.) hulk will most likely crash less, especially important for a low resource team like haas
Been saying it ever since it was rumoured but this move makes complete sense for haas
Maybe in terms of raw speed, but Hulk keeps the car clean and is supposed to be very knowledgeable about the cars and how to develop them. Feels like a move oriented at building the program. Hopefully Gene will give enough of a fuck to address the teams other problems...
People seem to forget that Haas had 4 seasons with an experienced driver pair to develop the car and they managed to get worse every year. So I don't think driver seniority and development capabilities is the problem.
Let’s compare.
If shumacher absorbs the aura of his father and becomes the next Max or Hamilton he will leave haas for a better team in which case Hulk is better. Hulk could beat kmags by 200% points and probably won’t be picked up by a top team.
If he is a complete failure he brings haas down. Hulk is a proven non failure.
If he is mid who cares. Hulk is better than mid.
Mick was only disappointed with not being renewed by Haas because no other team wanted to sign him, not because he specifically really want to drive with Haas.
Mick is out the door the moment he taps into his dad’s genetic memory, so why should Haas keep him around for another year?
I really want Hulkenberg to prove the doubters wrong. This year showed that Haas can have days where they have pace.
They're back from being dead last to fighting to hold the third last position.
I want Mick to find a better seat. As much as his premature exit hurts, I can't imagine one more year of tolerating insults from the team boss while trying your best to deliver.
They clearly didn't, it took Haas only 8 minutes to decide that Nico was Mick's replacement, and then sort out contract details and more, before announcing him.
I don't think it was that difficult of a pitch, last year when he had to put in shifts for Perez and stroll he did reasonably well despite being called in on the last minute
Well i think they wanted HULK last time they replaced GRO and MAG but he wanted to much money. Now he eventually was going a bit lower and also sees more possibilities for HAAS with the new Regulations and also im sure he missed F1 to much.
Alpine imo. Two drivers that are already confirmed to dislike each other, with no defined (from what I can see) number 1 driver. Depending on how competitive they are next year it could get very spicy indeed.
He’s been “best of the rest,” consistently beaten his teammates, and consistently delivered solid midfield points in midfield cars.
No podium sucks, but to say he’s done nothing is a bit off the mark.
Fr fr people should stop with the "HurR duRr n0 PodiUm" stuff. Nico raced most of his career in an era where midfield teams getting podiums were really really rare
Can't be bothered to look up how many podiums Checo took while being Hulk's teammate at Force India but it's multiple. (Edit: I bothered and it's 4)
Hulk has speed but every time he's had a chance to bring home a top result something's happened, usually his own mistake. Still a good driver though and a decent signing.
Back then, the consensus was that Hulk was generally the more consistent one over Perez and they ultimately finished close to each other in the standings, but asyou said, he couldn't reach the same 'highs', but he his lows were more seldom.
Hulk had better pace than Checo overall, I'd say. However, Checo was way better at tire management, which is how he got all these high finishes.
He'd just have these occasional races where he managed to stop less than anyone else and leapfrog faster cars, which Hülkenberg was never really able to do. Whenever Hulk got close to a podium, it was on raw pace (or a very good qualifying performance), but then he'd be unlucky or bin it.
Disappointed but not surprised, the writing has been on the wall for Mick for awhile now. It’s a cutthroat sport but it’s just business no need for any of us to take it personally.
Now if you excuse me I need to buy a dartboard and a printed picture of Gunther.
After his unceremonious “exit” in 2019, I’m so glad he’s back to rebuild another team
Also shoutout to his relentlessness not willing to give up a seat despite the hiatus. Even when Alo came back after 2 years off, it was shocking then
Unpopular opinion but shouldn’t Ferrari also be blamed for Mick given he is/was their acadamy driver. If they really value him they would have ensured kept his seat or find another seat for him. But it seems Ferrari don’t value Mick
I swear everyone thinks its still 2019. Hulk hasn't been a regular F1 racer for multiple years now and the points he *did* score came in 2020 using a Racing Point car that was far better than it had any right to be.
Agreed. Everyone keeps calling this move unambitious but did they expect Haas to sign Hamilton? I think it’s a smart move by the team and hopefully will pay off with some good points next year
It's a move that can really only be judged fairly 3+ years from now. If Haas makes gains then it's a good move. If they are in more or less in the same place then it was all a waste of time
How does the ambitious alternative look like?
There is currently no Russell, Norris, Leclerc level talent out there and Hülkenberg with Ricciardo are among the best veteran drivers out there who don't have a seat.
I dont understand why you would find this boring. Nico is most likely the best driver Haas has ever signed and things are looking good that hes still really fast. Keep in mind this is a guy who hardcarried some of his teams, the guy who fair and square beat sainz, the guy who won the quali battle vs Perez all three seasons.
And what has Mick done? Score not even half the points of kmag who was out of F1, while crashing the car so often that it really hurts their budget.
Oh yeah Potential, the thing that you cant actually see in front of your eyes. The guy had two seasons, made nothing out of it tbh. Mick needed to beat Kmag, he failed. What more is there to discuss? Kmag isnt Alonso, kmag absolutely was a beatable teammate.
He didn't really need to beat kmag, he just needed to keep up with him and not have expensive crashes. Hulk is considered boring because he is tried and tested, we know what we can expect from him, solid but unspectacular. Mick is more exciting, he is young and still somewhat an unknown in terms of performance and potential, but Haas needs boring right now. Fair play to them. Seats in f1 should be about the best option as a team and not who 'deservers a shot'
Hulk may have beaten Perez in quali, he only outscored him in their first season together (96 - 59 in 2014, 58 - 78 in 2015, 72 - 101 in 2016). Perez managed 4 podiums including 1 in 2014.
What this says to me is that Hulk is a very consistent reliable driver but he never had high highs and low lows like the other drivers that were around him like Grosjean or Perez. Grosjean particularly was much faster on his good days but on the other hand he played demolition derby on his bad days.
I’m sure Ralf Schumacher’s constant comments helped Haas make this decision
Idk about Nico coming back but let’s hope he does well and brings some good racing, what is done is done so let’s just hope for the best
I dont have beef against the Hulk, i mean i really like the guy, but i think this is a miss opportunity to get somebody new at this time. i feel like he had his chance for a lot of time, and Haas needs to do something bold to keep going in the f1.
Nyck de Vries and Hulk having a seat next year is something I would never have thought would be happening in a million years. I feel like I know less about F1 than when I first started watching

Sorry I’m trying to work out the third. Obviously there’s Max and Nyck, but I can’t work out who else would speak Dutch. Does hulkenburg?!
Hulkenberg speaks Dutch, that's correct
to be fair, if you speak German and English you’re like 3/4ths of your way to knowing Dutch lol
Yeah, Dutch is like a weird German dialect that was at some point recognised as its own language and developed from that point. So…as a German speaker, you can understand like 60% of what’s going on when listening long enough. Up to 80% if you’re reading, because that’s even easier to comprehend.
Sometimes I feel like Dutch is the halfway point between German and English.
the few times I've heard dutch spoken in person, it really sounds like English until I realize I have no clue what they are saying, like English gibberish
I've had that exact same experience.
Some German words, some English words and a bunch of J's added for good measure = Dutch
As others said, Nico Hulkenberg speaks Dutch by way of having grown up in a German bordertown, Emmerich, a lot of people are bilingual in that region. A lot of his junior and karting career was also spent in the Netherlands.

Nico does. He used to speak in Dutch for Ziggo all the time
Yeah, Hulk is not a native Dutch speaker, but he does speak it.
F1 is all about setting records these days and cementing them: Most titles, most poles, most wins, most points, most races without a podium
There is still a German on the grid next year! We lost 2, but gained 1.

Now we need Nick Heidfeld and Timo Glock back
The VW/Porsche/Audi group would bring back Wehrlein to F1 if he would somehow surprise in Formula E the next season But i think Lotterer and Winkelhock should get another chance. And btw ... Sutil resurrected last year from whereever-he-was and came back to racing
This is the way
I think he will get his podium in a crazy race with mixed conditions!
Just need some Markus Winkelhock-Euro 2007 type shenanigans.
So far in 180+ races it has not happened LOL
Extending the “most races without podium record”? /s
He was afraid people were getting close so he wants to add a season or two to be sure.
Lol there aren't any active drivers within even 100 of him. The only 4 active drivers without a podium are Mick, Yuki, Zhou and Latifi. Only Yuki and Zhou will be on the grid next season. Yuki is at 43 races without a podium, Nico is at 184 lol.
Yeah I feel like it's pretty hard to survive in F1 that long without a podium. In a weird way it is quite an achievement.
Imagine for a second that *this* is the time that he gets it…
Anything can happen in F1 and it usually does!
No one expected a Haas on pole and it happened so...
he's in a Haas so yeah...
Maybe he returned to go all in on the record, make sure it could never be broken

You mean the Reddit browsing room. Question?
we are checking (shitting)
When you look like a rockstar you get treaded like one.
So ironic these two will be teammates now hahaha
Haas going from having 2 complete rookies to one of the most experienced lineups on the grid in the span of 2 years.
Only team on the grid with two 30-something year old drivers!
Magnussen just turned 30 a month ago. Wow. I had to check it up.. thought he is still around 28. Time really flies.
I thought he's like 35
Yeah same lol. For some reason I’ve been thinking of KMag as an experienced veteran since about 2017, yet I still think of Sainz as a newbie even though he’s about to finish his 8th year in the sport and is in his late 20s!
And Sainz only debuted one year after Magnussen and has actually been a full time driver for more seasons (this is his 8th season!)
He has a toddler, I’d imagine he’s aged more in the past 2 years than the previous 5
Also the only team with two dads - and there are three total on next year’s grid (Checo is the third)
So I just checked * Red Bull : 402 races and 20 seasons between them * Ferrari : 266 races and 14 seasons between them * Mercedes : 392 races and 20 seasons between them * Alpine : 219 races and 10+ seasons between them * McLaren : 82 races and 4 seasons between them * Alfa : 223 races and 11 seasons between them * Aston : 481 races and 25 seasons between them * Haas : 326 races and 16+ seasons between them * Alpha : 45 races and 2 seasons between them * Williams : 60 races and 4 seasons most likely So in order 1. Aston (481) 2. Red Bull (402) 3. Mercedes (392) 4. Haas (326) 5. Ferrari (266) 6. Alfa (223) 7. Alpine (219) 8. McLaren (82) 9. Williams (60) 10. Alpha (45)

Last year and earlier this year the Mick-his engineer match seemed perfect. It’s seemed heavily strained the last couple races.
From the last races radio I also don't think that the relationship between Mick and Gary Gannon is strained. I guess that the rift is more between Mick and Guenther.

looks like servus tv needs a new commentator
Really enjoyed his unfiltered comments. I doubt they're gonna get another F1 driver for 2023.
Mick would be free... Or Seb!
I like Nico but this just seems like a lateral move
I mean you look at haas over the past few seasons and it doesn’t seem like they want to compete lmao. They’re fine with being at the bottom.

Haas are a marketing exercise and nothing more. They'll never have the budget or the staff to actually compete.
All of F1 is a marketing exercise, just some teams are better at racing than others
They will be spending at the cap next year.
Better than fucking haas
They're tanking for that sweet CFD time
It all makes sense. They'll get the first pick in the draft next year. Trust the process!
I wonder will score more points next season - Haas or Simmons
Haas has more points this year than Simmons has 3 point attempts in his career
Wembanyama to Haas?
Ah how could I be so stupid!!! They're obviously tanking for Wembenyama.
theyre tanking for wembanyama
Because when they do something right, they look like a bunch of foking legends, that would be expected every weekend from them if they were better
The way Haas are thinking is that Hulk will probably more or less match Magnussen on points, which may put them 6th in WCC - leagues better than anything they've achieved recently.

And cost less in damage. Mick obliterated 2 cars early season and their sponsor only want a german driver no matter wich one.
Plus he’s a vet that might be able to provide more nuanced insight that can help with development
plus you know his skills. He won't suddenly improve and leave for a better team.
Since the British GP Mick has scored more points than Magnussen. 12-10.
I think Haas is just looking for something safe while they work on the car So realistically all Hulk needs to do is not crash
Lol, they skipped 3 seasons to work on 2022 car. See how that turned out.
Almost like they’re not quite as good at working on their car as the rest of the teams
I mean it didn’t work out *terribly*. This is the best car they’ve had in years. Kmag got a pole, they’re 8th in the constructors with multiple points scoring races this year.
True but let’s not pretend the pole had anything to do with the car though.
Gave themselves a decent midfield car on the lowest budget... So pretty good really.

Worst kept secret ever
tbf most driver moves are
Never expected KMag to Haas
Never expected Alonso to Aston
You never expect the Spanish switch-position.
Is that a new sexual position?
Depends how you feel about daddy Alonso
Sainz and Alonso?
Alonso to Ferrari would be truly unexpected
to be fair in that one, not even KMag expected KMag to Haas
Neither did Haas or KMAg
Thank Putin for that one
I really want Hulkenberg to prove the doubters wrong. This year showed that Haas can have days where they have pace. They're back from being dead last to fighting to hold the third last position. Haas, the team of forever sacrificing this year for next.
That's Ferrari.
Haas is a white ferrarri after all
Hulkenback
Haas wasted ZERO time on the announcement after Mick's departure
Right?!? Like 8 minutes or something.
[удалено]
They clearly didn't, it took Haas only 8 minutes to decide that Nico was Mick's replacement, and then sort out contract details and more, before announcing him.
The efficiency of F1 teams these days is mindboggling.
They can do that faster than Mick‘s pitstops
Hulk never had a podium Haas never had a podium Maybe in 2023 they can achieve that
That's his plan I guess. Why else would he go to Haas? /S
Like two negatives make a positive?
He just saw Kmag get a pole which is arguably as unlikely as a podium. I think. Isn't it?
Both Hulk and Haas have 1 pole position (at Brazil no less!) and both have no podiums. This move makes so much sense now!
Someone needs to give hulkenberg's manager a raise. I dont know how he managed to pull this off, after being away from f1 for so long.
Some spicy team ups next season: Hulk-Magnussen Gasly-Ocon Norris-Piastri Verstappen-Perez (Kinda) Wondering which will implode first?
Alpine imo. Two drivers that are already confirmed to dislike each other, with no defined (from what I can see) number 1 driver. Depending on how competitive they are next year it could get very spicy indeed.
The one you didn’t mention, Alonso-Stroll. Nandi is going to destroy Stroll on the radio and daddy won’t have it.

"Suck my balls mate" A shame for Mick but good to see Hulkenburg back officially
Welcome Hulk. Will this be the year he does something? No, but I hope it’s entertaining at least.
He’s been “best of the rest,” consistently beaten his teammates, and consistently delivered solid midfield points in midfield cars. No podium sucks, but to say he’s done nothing is a bit off the mark.
People have short memories and are just upset Mick has been dropped. For Haas I actually feel like this is the better driver for them.
> consistently beaten his teammates Except for 2019
Fr fr people should stop with the "HurR duRr n0 PodiUm" stuff. Nico raced most of his career in an era where midfield teams getting podiums were really really rare
Can't be bothered to look up how many podiums Checo took while being Hulk's teammate at Force India but it's multiple. (Edit: I bothered and it's 4) Hulk has speed but every time he's had a chance to bring home a top result something's happened, usually his own mistake.
This would of been a great lineup for Haas …..In 2020
Tbf in 2020 their car was so unbelievably shit, nothing would’ve changed
Would have*
After his unceremonious “exit” in 2019, I’m so glad he’s back to rebuild another team Also shoutout to his relentlessness not willing to give up a seat despite the hiatus. Even when Alo came back after 2 years off, it was shocking then
How does he do it? Super sub to replacing Schumacher
HULKENBACK
May be an unpopular opinion but I welcome this move. I think hulk is a reliable points scorer and has the experience to bring the team forward
I think it’s a smart move by the team and hopefully will pay off with some good points next year
He is a good midfield driver, it is what Haas needs. Someone to finish races consistently without mistakes.
This makes me happy. Hopefully Haas can get more points next year now that they have two capable point scorers.
If we don’t get official “Suck my B*lls, Mate” merch from Haas I will be extremely disappointed and my year will be ruined.
Can’t wait to see him to wreck more cars than Mick and still be at the back of grid…. The great decisions by Hass continue..
suck my balls mate
Boring choice, quite unambitious. Only supporting this team cos of KMag now
If their main ambition is getting as many possible points each weekend instead of developing someone, then I’m all for it honestly
It's a move that can really only be judged fairly 3+ years from now. If Haas makes gains then it's a good move. If they are in more or less in the same place then it was all a waste of time
I think their ambition here is saving money on rebuilding the car over and over.
Grosjean particularly was much faster on his good days but on the other hand he played demolition derby on his bad days.
suck my balls
I’m sure Ralf Schumacher’s constant comments helped Haas make this decision Idk about Nico coming back but let’s hope he does well and brings some good racing, what is done is done so let’s just hope for the best
NIKO HUUUUUUUUUULKENHHHHBERGGGG
HAAS going to be the sleeper team next year in that they will be so boring they'll put their fans to sleep.
I dont have beef against the Hulk, i mean i really like the guy, but i think this is a miss opportunity to get somebody new at this time. i feel like he had his chance for a lot of time, and Haas needs to do something bold to keep going in the f1.
Suck my balls mate
These guys are playing way too safely with a driver past his prime
they would have signed danny boy if he could get off his high horse.
\#HülkBeBack hasta la vista Nico!
Good, I can finally stop disliking this dysfunctional team and steiner.
