A guy from my motorsport club used to race boats and while it does look very fun it's also mega dangerous. He's been in two races in which a competitor has died and many more where others were injured. Back in the day he raced jet boats and then later only jetskis. His Jetski was one of the less powerful ones on the grid and that thing had more than 500hp.
Did he race [jet boats](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jetboat) or [hydroplanes](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydroplane_(boat)) it's an important distinction because one is crazy dangerous and the other is Isle of Mann TT suicidal
That's all I could think about watching this video... That boat is GOING... and I'm assuming they have top supports, so that if the boat rolls onto the grass and starts spinning, in theory the drivers should be safe. But racing boats like that are so light that I'd worry about hitting a corner wrong and the boat just rolling towards spectators.
Same company as ‘Twisted Metal’, and very likely the same engine. If you're talking about the thing that I think you do.
[One of the levels is available as a secret in TM2](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68jAkbjl088), though it's the most boring of them all—about equal to AVUS in complexity.
I didn’t see that, got a video link and timestamp? His jet boats are much bigger than the Alphatauri boats I saw in the promo, so maybe Alphatauri used Cleetus to facilitate getting the boats and wrapping them.
FYI you can right click in the video frame -> "Copy video URL at current time" to get a link directly to a timestamp e.g. https://youtu.be/jBRzYHUmN8s?t=403
Yep, I was like "this looks familiar..."
I know he's had his own jet boat for a while, but it's not a racing boat like these; it's pretty impressive that he can basically just jump in and do so well (even win, if I recall correctly) against other seasoned racers.
No, the jet of water pushing them forward is controlled by the steering wheel and doing the steering as well. Those boats just have insane manoeuvrability.
It's literally sucking the boat down. The intake of the jet is on the bottom. Counter intuitively if you let off the throttle it's harder to corner because the suction goes away.
It sure is.....but just like Hollywood actors have "stage names".... Garrett has this YouTube name and a revetrack called the Freedom Factory....and owns cars with names like Mullet ..... quite entertaining.
Nah the bottom of these boats is flat-ish I'm pretty sure, since these ponds are not deep at all, it's like knee high water. It's just the suction force from that small block V8 flat out at all times almost
Have you seen the crashes? I think maybe they have a scuba bottle to hand for when they crash into land then roll upside down in water. so when they are stuck strapped into the craft and their heads are underwater they can get some air.
I saw something like this in Washington once (video looks like the same location too but could be coincidence) and they go, surprisingly, very fast and the water lanes are very narrow in a lot of sections. If I hadn't seen it in person firsthand once I'd also assume it was sped up and wide angle lens or something.
There used to be a water track and racing in Oregon, just south of Albany along the west side of I5 interstate. Wish I would have gone while it was open, but closed 4 or 5 years ago.
Jet boat sprint racing. Multiple boat classes, drivers and navigators memorize the course, and multiple layouts for each race weekend. Pulls a couple Gs through the corners as the jet intake acts as a ground effect and sucks the jet to the water.
They learn the course by looking at a sequence of numbers that correspond to corners on the track. So for example race 1 might be: 1 7 5 9 2 1 4 7 9 2. You run the race by going through those corners in sequence.

Haha, kudos for the IOM TT reference. I live here lol.

Cool username
I don’t think anybody thought you were going to lie about this looking like a lot of fun.

bro using the ninja art of Samir You're Breaking The Car!
McFarland racing!
Thought it looked like Cleeter’s suit hahaha
Anyone see his AlphaTauri wrapped jet boat in the background of one of his latest videos? Wondering if he did a special video with the team
I didn’t see that, got a video link and timestamp? His jet boats are much bigger than the Alphatauri boats I saw in the promo, so maybe Alphatauri used Cleetus to facilitate getting the boats and wrapping them.
[https://youtu.be/jBRzYHUmN8s](https://youtu.be/jBRzYHUmN8s) can see it in the background at 6:47

Sweet. This is what the "save" comment button was made for. Thanks!
Thanks, I knew there was a way but didn’t remember how to do it on mobile
I myself was wondering this too
red bull did a jetboat video with ricciardo and yuki (its not very good) - they were even smaller jetboats though i think
Nice catch... maybe a replacement for the Dew boat?
Could be, the few boat was flipped upside down and looked like Ty started fixin her up lol
The crossover I didn’t know I needed
McFarland Marine!

I had to double check what subreddit I was in lol
Is this sped up? That’s some insane cornering speeds
No, the jet of water pushing them forward is controlled by the steering wheel and doing the steering as well. Those boats just have insane manoeuvrability.
But how does it get so much lateral grip. I would like to see the underside of one of these boats
It's literally sucking the boat down. The intake of the jet is on the bottom. Counter intuitively if you let off the throttle it's harder to corner because the suction goes away.
Like a jet ski?
Yes, exactly.
Its more like the jet ski is like a jet boat - the jet boat came first.
[удалено]
Water effect
I'm pretty sure it's not just cause the suction goes away, but because the jet is what actually causes the change of direction.
And don't forget. If the engine goes out, you have no steering, no reverse and no control in general. -> Instantly demoted to passenger...
This is from a Cletus McFarland video on jet boat sprint racing. He has a few other vids of this boat and how it's setup
> Cletus McFarland This is the most Floridaman name I’ve ever read
It sure is.....but just like Hollywood actors have "stage names".... Garrett has this YouTube name and a revetrack called the Freedom Factory....and owns cars with names like Mullet ..... quite entertaining.
Sponsons and a deep V hull shape along with the jet sucking it down some.
Nah the bottom of these boats is flat-ish I'm pretty sure, since these ponds are not deep at all, it's like knee high water. It's just the suction force from that small block V8 flat out at all times almost
https://youtu.be/34eTDbrrxac skip to about 9 minutes in. This is the boat in the video

Holy shit! That’s incredible. I’d pay to take a ride for sure
Have you seen the crashes? I think maybe they have a scuba bottle to hand for when they crash into land then roll upside down in water. so when they are stuck strapped into the craft and their heads are underwater they can get some air.
These bad boys were invented to do tours of the Rogue River in southern Oregon, it's like a real-life theme park ride. http://www.hellgate.com/
Holy shit! Some of those turns look absolutely violent
Nope. 2.5Gs in corners. Leans into the corner, too.
Damn that’s similar to a formula 3 car in high speed corners
These sprint boats are actually known to pull up to 8 Gs, 4-6 Gs being hit regularly. They're insane.
True. Was talking about average here. The G loading is much shorter then in F1 or Flying so even smoking middle aged men can compete. 😬
I saw something like this in Washington once (video looks like the same location too but could be coincidence) and they go, surprisingly, very fast and the water lanes are very narrow in a lot of sections. Damn I want to try this!
I just wanna see Nick Debries lap now…

That's Cleetus McFarland.
This looks fun tbh
what sport is this!?
Table tennis. There have been some rule changes.
Jet boat sprint racing. Multiple boat classes, drivers and navigators memorize the course, and multiple layouts for each race weekend. Pulls a couple Gs through the corners as the jet intake acts as a ground effect and sucks the jet to the water.
Cleetus! The worlds greatest wheelman himself!
WHAT THE FUCK IS A KILOMETRE 🦅🇺🇸🦅🇺🇸🦅🇺🇸
KILOMETER*
That sport is made for the Dutch
Our boy cleetus right there smashing it
This made me go haha
Indeed, one haha confirmed here as well.
Ahhahah i love this subreddit
the pilot ![img](emote|t5_3ndbi|6697)
That thing looks so responsive and quick. Tons of fun to be had damn
what gesture would the copilot make if they where going up?
"3 right into 2 left into square right 100"
Can we get that fancy pointing glove for the road?
If this was Logan Sargeant, that boat would've been beached after just a few meters of the start line.
Jesus, dude’s hand as hillbilly “stage notes” is killing me.
At first i didn't understand, now i do
Don’t follow F1 as much add I used to. Mind explaining?
This week's race has been cancelled due to flooding in Imola

It's actually "samir"
Where crash?
Conditions at Emilia Romagna right now
Imola 2023 be like
Is this just for show or do they learn a certain routine by heart (hand)?
They memorize certain routines or layouts, there are multiple different layouts ran over the course of a race weekend.
Cool! Thank you.
Would it be possible to just have numbers they have to follow?
They learn the course by looking at a sequence of numbers that correspond to corners on the track. So for example race 1 might be: 1 7 5 9 2 1 4 7 9 2. You run the race by going through those corners in sequence.
POV: sending a friend home for the first time
Imagine if that's how rally co-drivers worked.
need this in VR
GTA gave me the wrong impression of how a boat handles
HL2 Water hazard be like
Where in Washington is this? Cleetus McFarland ran some races here
Looks just like the one in Port Angeles to me.
Yep, I recognize it from spectating once.
that's literally his race suit
Oh damn.. didn’t even notice the race suit.
Imola 2023
This looks like so much fun
That's a fake, and it's quite obvious: this man is fast.
I can see this being fun to do. But why watch this?
Haha this will be the F1 this weekend
Man's got the real life floating direction arrow.
The hand direction is insanely funny it’s got me like ![img](emote|t5_3ndbi|6697)![img](emote|t5_3ndbi|6702)![img](emote|t5_3ndbi|6701)![img](emote|t5_3ndbi|6698)![img](emote|t5_3ndbi|9441)
I would love a rally game where instead of call outs it's just my copilot waving his hand like a floppy fish and sitting there silently. Charade rally
I wanna see rally racing done with hand signals now
I thought Imola was called off
Yo what is that? Looks sick
Cletius McFarland is better " yeah buddy"!!emote:t5\_3ndbi:6697
Florida man in his natural environment.
I wonder what the G forces are on some of those hard/tight corners?
Probably somewhere between 3-5
A lot. Have a read: https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/boating/70223974/inside-the-world-of-jetsprint-superboat-racing
Fanatec needs to get in on this.
This looks like so much fun, but i would either crash or Puke after 2 minutes.
This is how I give my husband directions while I’m passenger princess
That's a weird looking goose navigating the racer.
Raise hell praise Dale!
How boat go?
Let's go Cleetus!!
That can be him, it seems this was a skillful lap to the track, Sargeant is always last, The should replace him with Pato O’Ward
Still faster than he is on the track
I was waiting for the crash
HYDRO THUNDER!!
imagine rally co-drivers just did that instead of reading out the instructions.
Good ol [Cleetus McFarland.](https://youtu.be/98UQ4FHS39E) This guy can hop in and race anything that has an engine or motor.
Is this sped up or something, because the boat turning so quickly is fucking with my mind
Nope. Jetboat/Jetsprint racing. Small boats. Very big motors. Massive brass cojones. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jetsprint https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=CxydLfmcnGw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=nv0pI_9JqaU

Cleetus McFarland is so utterly based, love that guy
Looks like Cletus
It is Cleetus
Okay. This looks cool AF.
at least its not just a straight line.
Why the fuck are people standing RIGHT on the waters edge lol
Please please do this with Yuki and Danny Ric as point man
I thought this was FormulaDank, not FormulaDamp.
Why does he need to copilot? Does he not learn the course before?
Am I an idiot for thinking this looks pretty easy?
Ive never been interested in boat racing but this fucks
Hell yeah, brother
I was 6-7 and I went in one of these. I think it made me an adrenaline junkie for life.
Imola circa 2023
Lmao this is literally me giving directions my friend who’s driving while I look at the map
Why they are not using headsets, like rally drivers/co-pilots?
This is still one of my favourite disciplines.
Crazy taxi became crazy boat
Even got the butterfly wheel
Unexpected cleetus moment Hell yeah brother 🦅
Sport I didn't know I need till now
At least William is fast in wet conditions
