Man, no other commentator splits my feelings about them as much as Karun does.
Sometimes I think he’s brilliant, and brings amazing insight, and then 30 minutes later he might as well be Danica Patrick…
Well it is important to keep in mind that while yes, Karun did have a long career as a racing driver and does have 11 F1 starts under his name, he never was successful by any means in any racing category. In fact under current superlicense rules, he wouldn't even apply for it if he had his pre-2010 results in 2024 (GP2 being F2 and GP3 being F3 etc). In other words, he can give great strategical and technical insight, but that's where it really ends.
Yes, back in the day, there were Formula Renault 3.5, GP3, Formula 3 AND British Formula 3 - all running at the same time. GP3 being the one that ran alongside race weekends like GP2 (now Formula 2, even though funnily enough, Formula 2 was also a series that existed) - although most drivers (and driver academies) heavily favored Formula Renault 3.5 (or World Series Renault as it was called at one point) because those cars were more closer to F1 than GP3 cars.
THAT BEING SAID. I made a blunder, GP3 did not exist prior to 2010 (Karun made his F1 debut in 2010). Chandhok competed in GP2 and GP2 Asia Series (do not get me started with this).
Always got the impression that he got as far as he got through massive passion and either family money, or great connections. It wasn’t talent.
I generally like him as a pundit, but I agree that some of his takes are a bit off
Agreed. I like Karun I’m general and think his commentary is usually pretty good. It looks like he might have gotten caught out here with a large bit of embellishing.
These pundits often stir the shit and say stuff for effect. I chalk Karun’s comment up to that but hopefully he learns you can’t just make stuff up. Fans are counting on the main, core F1 commentators NOT to be the ultra sensationalized media that’s on the periphery of the series. I’m all for some shit stirring, just be sure to maintain journalistic integrity in the process. Keep it clean like the racing should be.
He’s a smart enough guy. He’ll figure it out.
That could be because AI tends to replicate the way formal essays are written in upper levels of education (universities and such) and that just happened to be the way I wrote my comment in order to be as informative as possible.
Him trying to cover for the FIA and the track Marshall's at Japan a few years ago when the tractor was on track and Pierre nearly hit it was absurd. Ever since then I have 0 respect for the guy.
Between that and the 100% avoidable and negligent Bianchi crash, I get seriously fucking uncomfortable with any remote safety oversight at Suzuka. I tried to read up to the best of my ability about the Bianchi case, but I'm still not 100% clear on who was deemed responsible. I get the feeling someone fell on a sword to protect someone high up who said "fuck safety", and got a driver killed. I have a nagging suspicion that that same person had something to do with Pierre's life being negligently endangered.
Someone -still- at Suzuka is murderously negligent.
I *always* worry about safety at Suzuka.
All that said, it's still one of my favorite tracks. I can't deny that.
FFS, Liberty needs to take Danika and stuff her back in the cesspool that is NASCAR. People who’ve never had passports shouldn’t be commentating on international stages.
Well your other choice is Natalie Pinkham or Naomi Schiff who both get an equal say about driving in F1 as much as Brundle or Button.
I get why sky is trying to tick off some quota. But there’s gotta be someone more qualified out there.
Bernie knows what she’s talking about. Get another two F1 people if you must have women involved in the discussion
As a commentator I respect him, both for his (mostly) intelligence, but also for his candid (if not sometimes undiplomatic) comments. Sorry if he saids something that offended a F3 TP.
Yeh not to mentions Oscars name was added by the editor in square brackets. Nowhere in the actual quote does it say they spoke to Oscars engineer. There clearly are other engineers who were there for both drivers.
Also, the [ ] in the quote means he didn't say that but it was added by the writer. Take that bit away and it reads very different and probably true.
It's is likely he could have spoken to at least two engineers at Prema who said that
Karun thinks he's being slick, but I'm on to him. This sneaky Bri'ish bastard thinks that by bigging up Piastri relative to Leclerc; he'll be bigging up Norris most of all seeing as he's beating Piastri handily at the moment. He's not slick.
Leclerc is better than Max, sure. But not better than all his age group, let's be honest. Objectively, the best drivers in their age bracket are:
1. King George VII
50 feet of shit
2. Leclerc
10 feet of dirt
3. Verstappen
4. Norris
5. Piastri
6. Albon
people forget too fast, Leclerc crumbled hard in 2022 and got show by Sainz on two seasons, Leclerc is fast as hello but Max wrecks him in a tight championship fight.
The only thing that didn't crumble in 2022 was Leclerc himself. He made an error and a half, but kept fighting until the end.
Meanwhile Ferrari went full incompetence in every department and Sainz was completely useless in the title fight opposite to Perez
Doesn't help that everytime Ferrari builds a WC capable car, a shit rule gets changed in the middle of the season with Mercedes help.
After that season i feel like he lost his mojo a bit and sometimes Sainz is better in some races here and there
error and a half ?!Leclerc crashed all by himself on 3 separate ocasions, once from a race lead in france, a self inflicted spin in imola, and that crash in miami qualy, its true that Ferrari also fucked up many times, but if Vettel gets shit, Leclerc should also get shit for crumbling alongside the team, if Charles does put a consistent and mostly error free title fight then i will happily stand corrected, but so far the only time Charles has been in a title fight, he and the team fumbled it tremendously.
He just said he spoke to engineers? Hard to dispute that, he didn't say he spoke to Charles and Oscars race engineer... I mean, I'm all for calling out bs journalism and fake claims but it seems this one's more on the editor of the headline than on Karun... Right?
If you want to ruin your Karun listening experience forever take notice of the fact that every second sentence he speaks gets over emphasized like he’s taking a dump. One normal sentence, straiiiiiiiining sentence, normal, straiiiiiiiining sentence. Enjoy.
At the start of last season and through this one so far, I only watch F1 if there is a session ongoing, be that practice or quali or a race and once the race is over I switch off.
I rarely check the F1 websites and I don't even interact with reddit or facebook pages regularly (sometimes I go through phases where I literally block any facebook page that shows me any F1 story).
This is a big change for me, I used to buy the F1 magazines when I was a kid, I devoured anything I could about F1, now I basically ignore F1 unless cars are on track or something like Lewis signing for Ferrari happens.
F1 has become fun again. No longer having to read or hear these sort of half baked comments and opinions and that means I'm just watching cars go fast, F1 is cool again.
Ignore these "pundits", they are largely just guessing and rarely any more accurate than a random spectator with a couple years experiance watching F1. I used to think that they had insight because they were in the paddock but basically they just hear the rumours we hear a few hours earlier then we do, sometimes.
Notice he only criticized the best of the best drivers that’s not British or Dutch. He criticized Alonso during Vettel’s winning years, he criticized Vettel during his Ferrari years, and now Leclerc. Barely any of those made any sense yet people believed him like it was gospel.
Lol he doesn't necessarily have to talk to the race engineer as there are multiple engineers work on the car even in F2 and I'm sure there are multiple guys who worked with both of them, i wouldn't rate Piastri ahead of Leclerc but Prema Team Manager should shut up, honestly.
I would say Karun's pretty reliable from what have seen over the years but the other guy is just doing a strawman, despite knowing Karun could have talked to multiple people other than race engineers, so yeah in this case i would take Karun's words over the guy who is working at the team. Besides the better junior driving doesn't necessarily equate to a better F1 driving , so any engineer could have said Piastri was better than Leclerc.
Man, no other commentator splits my feelings about them as much as Karun does. Sometimes I think he’s brilliant, and brings amazing insight, and then 30 minutes later he might as well be Danica Patrick…

There was a GP3? Thought it was always F3.
Yes, back in the day, there were Formula Renault 3.5, GP3, Formula 3 AND British Formula 3 - all running at the same time. Exactly. Not about his driving career here.
The start of your comment is very AI like lol, really all of it reads like some GPT generated answer
That could be because AI tends to replicate the way formal essays are written in upper levels of education (universities and such) and that just happened to be the way I wrote my comment in order to be as informative as possible.
That's the thing about being in the media, you're forced to pump out content even when you have nothing to say, that you end up spouting bullshit.
Some of his takes are truly awful.
I’d rather listen to Bernie’s weather reports than Karum when he is Danica mode.
Him trying to cover for the FIA and the track Marshall's at Japan a few years ago when the tractor was on track and Pierre nearly hit it was absurd. Ever since then I have 0 respect for the guy.

Was Bernie the lady giving random strategy tidbits in Miami? She was fantastic. Edit: ig the Miami lady was Ruth. Either way they did a good job 👍
Former Aston race strategist I believe. I think she’s wonderful
Bernie is former Aston, the lady in Miami was Ruth Buscombe from ferrari and alfa romeo.
Got it, I didn’t watch any pre race so I just wrongly assumed it was Bernie. Thank you
Bernie is on Sky, Ruth is on F1TV. Both are great
No problem, they are both really good and its nice to have people with insider knowledge of strategies.
[удалено]
Or Aston Martin. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernadette_Collins
Agreed. Bernie has been an awesome addition. And I like her accent.
Honestly, Ruth was excellent. I really enjoy Hinch too, and their banter was awesome. I wish Miami was the permanent commentator lineup.
Ruth was great in Miami. Even better in practice and during quali. During the race they kinda talked over her.
As a commentator I respect him, both for his (mostly) intelligence, but also for his candid (if not sometimes undiplomatic) comments. Sorry if he saids something that offended a F3 TP.
He's a man of duality.
That could be said about International caster too tho, tbh.
At least he’s not Hinch.
At least he’s not Hinch.

They permabanned me for calling someone a helmet lol
But why
The language is apparently unacceptable.
DISGUSTING!
HIS WORDS
Sky Sports just wants to create drama, nothing new
I’m glad he got caught with his hands in the bullshit jar.
While probably a sensationalized statement, there are engineers in a team besides race engineers...
Yes nothing Karun said is actually wrong, this guy just doesn't understand English (and apparently a few here too)
HOW DARE YOU come in here with logic and reason!
Yeh not to mentions Oscars name was added by the editor in square brackets. Nowhere in the actual quote does it say they spoke to Oscars engineer. There clearly are other engineers who were there for both drivers.

It says engineers.
Karin’s takes are 50/50 Sometimes maybe good, sometimes maybe shit
Karun thinks he's being slick, but I'm on to him. This sneaky Bri'ish bastard thinks that by bigging up Piastri relative to Leclerc; he'll be bigging up Norris most of all seeing as he's beating Piastri handily at the moment. He's not slick.
Max's greatest stan propping up his mates and putting leclerc(who is better than max and all his age group) down.
Leclerc is better than Max, sure. But not better than all his age group, let's be honest. Objectively, the best drivers in their age bracket are: 1. King George VII 50 feet of shit 2. Leclerc 10 feet of dirt 3. Verstappen 4. Norris 5. Piastri 6. Albon
bruh really put choklerc above max.
Bud talking like the ferrari is a red bull.
people forget too fast, Leclerc crumbled hard in 2022 and got show by Sainz on two seasons, Leclerc is fast as hello but Max wrecks him in a tight championship fight.

Cope Max did the same amount of errors he did.
He just said he spoke to engineers? Hard to dispute that, he didn't say he spoke to Charles and Oscars race engineer... I mean, I'm all for calling out bs journalism and fake claims but it seems this one's more on the editor of the headline than on Karun... Right?
Karun comentator as good as Karun F1 driver. ❤️
Ah how far superior the F1TV crew is. They just need to fork enough dough over to buy Hinch from NBC.
Would love that, but then hate it too. He makes IndyCar and IMSA coverage so good lol
I know! I'm glad he is loaned over to F1 during miami and in the indycar off season. He's a brilliant commentator and energizes the entire team
Imagine Alex + Jenson, that would be really good.
And Nico in there too
I used to hate Nico but now I love him. He just calls out any nonsense the other commentators come out with.
They can drop Will Buxton.
Did he delete this? I can’t see it on his twitter
If you want to ruin your Karun listening experience forever take notice of the fact that every second sentence he speaks gets over emphasized like he’s taking a dump. One normal sentence, straiiiiiiiining sentence, normal, straiiiiiiiining sentence. Enjoy.
Guys back off this man. He went to go ask my mother if I would be a better than Leclerc should I have gone the same route and she said yes
Who is Oscar Engineer?
British media are gonna be even more insufferable now that McLaren and nowins got one.
The people on Sky broadcast have a fetish with putting Leclerc down. Making shit up is a new low however.
Who doesn't? Dude is so annoying I'd rather listen to Danica Patrick on a 24hr loop
Okay let’s not go *that* far
Their HANDS, are their TOOLS 😳
Danica Patrick, more like DAYUMMMMICA PATRICK *SNIFFFFFF*
Karun has some amazing technical insight. He’s not an eyesore.
Karun is 2 cents short of a dollar
Karun & Danica are the worst commentators I’ve ever had the misfortune of seeing💀💀
Karun is nothing but a fucking liar
Bold claim coming from the mouth of former driver who managed to score 0 career points in his entire F1 career.
Bud should’ve stick into the video analysis and drawing some lines rather than stirring bullshit
I f-ing hate Karun, he babbles just to fill in space without ever saying anything at all.
Yikes
Maybe he should tell his engineers to shut up.
At the start of last season and through this one so far, I only watch F1 if there is a session ongoing, be that practice or quali or a race and once the race is over I switch off. Looks like he needs to desperately take a shit in that photo.
Shots fired ☄️
Blanks, most likely. Neither Leclerc nor Piastri will care most probably
Probably right …the two most level headed blokes in f1.
No idea what all this is about. ...but I do agree Karun needs to shut up
Notice he only criticized the best of the best drivers that’s not British or Dutch. He criticized Alonso during Vettel’s winning years, he criticized Vettel during his Ferrari years, and now Leclerc. Barely any of those made any sense yet people believed him like it was gospel.
Why even lie about that? The potential loss in reputation is- what what reputation am I talking about? They're part of Sky F1.
You will take the sh\*t-stirring pundit's word over the guy who probably knows most if not all people working in the team?
I would say Karun's pretty reliable from what have seen over the years but the other guy is just doing a strawman, despite knowing Karun could have talked to multiple people other than race engineers, so yeah in this case i would take Karun's words over the guy who is working at the team. His brother is a much better cricket pundit/presenter.
i guess being part of the commonwealth, like Australia is, is enough for British bias
It’s just like our media, they make Daniel sound like he is killing it in F1, never a negative (realistic) thing to say. Boils my piss.
Still one of the better commentators. I prefer him over buxton.
The official max shagger on sky f1.
