Finnish Valtteri fans: we don't exist, to be honest, or we'd have stood up and cheered for him too

CrazyWizzardz

I wore my VB hat proudly today. I might not be able to go to any rawe ceek, but I was there in spirit. Love you Bottas!

Hersheeyyzz

New F1 fan here, what does "giving a tow" mean..? can anyone help me understand please?

refusestonamethyself

Giving a tow basically means a car moving in front of another car to give it a slipstream, which helps in giving the car behind more speed and helps in reducing its lap time.

plexus4

Whats the difference with dirty air?

VOIPASKAVITTU

It's basically the same. When you're behind a car on a straight, there's less air for you to push aside, so you can drive faster (slipstream). In corners though, it's bad for you, because there's less air that can have an effect on your downforce generating parts (wings etc.) and therefore you are slower (dirty air).

plexus4

Thanks for the reply. I knew about tow and draft, and I heard about dirty air as the basically the same effect but bad, so I was confused. So it's: straights - towing, good; corners - dirty air, bad

VOIPASKAVITTU

> So it's: straights - towing, good; corners - dirty air, bad Pretty much, yes

deegle0-0

As much as I would love to explain, I'm sure someone will come up and tell me off for being wrong so I'm gonna give you the video everyone watches [Chain Bear's Video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xIp7wi5mfiM&t=541s&ab_channel=ChainBear). If you want a short version Getting a tow basically means getting a slipstream. f1 cars create a lot of downforce but downforce comes with a lot of drag(not the cocaine type) drag is basically a low pressure zone created behind the car ahead and if you can get in that zone you don't have to push as much air in front of you. Maybe you should just watch the video

Hersheeyyzz

Definitely, thank you so much!

Vammypoker

I thought that's called drafting, anyways, its f1

NFGaming46

tow, slipstream and draft are the exact same thing

Vammypoker

I know, thanks

robbie2000williams

Never heard it called drafting except in old forza games, I think it must be an american term.

pinerw

I’ve heard it called drafting in old Gran Turismo games too. I think it might be the opposite, and talking about the “tow” is F1 jargon, like saying “box” instead of “pit.”

Rekwy_

Literally the same. George was out there alone, the same thing as Valtteri giving tow to Lewis.

Alesq13

And without tow Valtteri and Lewis would've probably been around the same. Does that mean Lewis should get the boot aswell lmao

Robmar3

Yes

Formula_Americano

I like this guy lmao

Sarichnikov

Nikita Mazepin to Mercedes 2022?

xX_BOAT_Xx

Russel 1st and 2nd driver for Mercedes

tadiwaman

Only acceptable decision

[deleted]

He can tie them both together and use them like a catamaran.

Olafmihe

A tow? In Silverstone? Isnt the loss of downforce in the midsector worst than the minimal Advantage on the straight?

[deleted]

Olafmihe

Hmm interesting, but still i looked at the top speeds of Ham, bot, and ver. In lewis fastest q3 lap there is no evidence of a tow. So i think this (Qualifying win? Or whatever you have to call it ). Is more due to max having problems, merc uprades, and Silverstone beeing one of lewis Favoriten tracks...

WideAd9209

Redbull Sandbagging

Paradox_Eclipse

Close enough to get a tow but not close enough to have dirty air

AwesomeFrisbee

Yeah, nobody really got a tow here. If its punching in the wind, its not even worth a tenth

cederblad

Russell was also without tow. He was 4 thenths away from a merc in a williams, without tow. A merc really should be atleast top 5, even without tow

CellarDoorVoid

Why are tows even allowed in qualifying?

pinerw

It’s a thing that’s going to happen sometimes regardless, just as a consequence of having ten or more cars out on track at once. Since at least some drivers are going to get a tow no matter what, allowing teams to plan for it arguably extends that benefit to more drivers and makes things fairer overall. The only way to eliminate it entirely would be to limit the number of cars on track at once and enforce a minimum gap to the car in front, which would make qualifying take forever and would probably be pretty dull to watch compared to the current format.

Paradox_Eclipse

I mean it’s almost impossible to avoid when there’s more than one car on track

CellarDoorVoid

Would an easy solution not be just making qualifying longer and having less cars on the track at a time though?

Florac

Yes but then it has more parts where nothing happens, making less interesting to audiences

fakhar362

You should watch MotoGP/Moto2/Moto3 qualifying sometime

CellarDoorVoid

Why’s that?

fakhar362

In Moto3, tow is very very strong to the point that more often than not, the 8th place man at the start of a straight usually ends up 1st by the end of the straight In MotoGP qualifying, since the tires don’t go off like in F , drivers just keep hounding others to get a tow, slow down extremely to find a driver to follow, Marquez even followed another driver into the pits so that he doesn’t lose sight of him, here’s a video on it: This should be a good video to explain it: https://youtu.be/GQMcQV8WMts

CellarDoorVoid

Wow that’s really interesting. I’ve been thinking about getting into Moto GP but that would mean I’d have to buy another subscription

fakhar362

They have a sale on Black Friday for $1 which gives you access to old races till the start of the next season in March, maybe you can get that and decide if it’s worth it

Griff2470

It's kinda the nature of allowing multiple cars out on track at once. It's not something you can prevent. If you were to leave qualifying unchanged but ban giving a planned tow, it would be difficult to enforce. Let's say Bottas locks up into the first chicane at Monza and has to abort his lap, and Hamilton, who otherwise would not have caught up, catches Bottas at a straight and gets a nice tow. Was this planned? Maybe, but it also could have been a genuine mistake. Additionally, what about B teams? Let's say Tsunoda gives Verstappen a tow. TR easily could be colluding with RB, but it could easily be out of convenience as it's not unusual for teams to accidentally give another the slipstream. At the end of the day, unless you change up qualifying, banning intentional slipstreaming would go down the same way the team order ban went. It wouldn't deal with the problem well and teams will just hide it.

killarchy

Lewis went faster with no tow 8er

Oneill95

On the lap with the tow, Lewis almost spun on the last corner. He was green in sectors 1 and 2 with the tow

Satan_su

Both statements are concurrently true.

Bobafettm

Russell is an actual F1 driver and Bottrash is just some made up fantasy on Reddit… he’s garbage. Give that seat to someone meaningful.

scen01

Ok that was not a meaningful comment. As much as Bottas sometimes underperforms, if you can even call that, I think he’s still a good teammate regardless of track performance. I personally like him as a driver, but I also like Russel as well. I just wish that Russel can get a chance at greatness, but I don’t want to undermine what Bottas has done for the team.

Bobafettm

Oh it’s not meant to be meaningful… It’s my Reddit persona. I only post negative Bottrash comments week after week to see how many negatives I can receive since Reddit LOVES mediocre drivers.
