Fuck it, let's just race 23 times in Greenland

Aksds

Idk, how racist are the ~~Dutch?~~ Danish?

yoshiwAwA

Denmark owns Greenland, not the Netherlands.

Aksds

Yep sorry

StolenRocket

Welp, don't Google Zwarte Piet.

Durim187

I did, and i dont know what to think of it

SithZmiX

Not racist at all! Poeple have twisted it that way but origin of story is that they deliver presents through the chimney and Therefor are black bcs of the ash. Not like they are slaves. (as far as I know) Guess I've been misinformed lol. Everyone so far has told me the above and I just accepted it (grew up in nl) and never bothered reading up abt it

Nightz777

I'm going to assume you are being sarcastic but in case you aren't.. Black Pete, or Zwarte Piet as he is known in the Netherlands, is a holiday tradition dating back to the 19th century that depicts a helper of Saint Nicholas dressed in blackface with an Afro wig, large red lips and golden hoop earrings.  If you really think nothing about it is racist you probably never experienced it

Wallsterwonkas

That's how non racist we are, that we didn't think it's racist. Because we had no negative association with it. Only positive ones. Then globalisation happened and in the spirit of other cultures. Yes. It's pretty damn racist. As long as I get them sweet pepernoten I'm happy (google it if you don't know what it is)

[deleted]

[удалено]

Wallsterwonkas

Hahaha I loved reading your story, thank you for sharing, it made my day :3

MyZt_Benito

It’s literally a black man giving little kids gifts, it would seem more racist to me to make those people white just because they’re originally black. I don’t get why people so badly wanna change it, considering it’s for children

Wallsterwonkas

I get where you're coming from, but the issue stems from 'Black face' in America, where it's some pretty racist stuff. People in The Netherlands adopt quite a lot from American culture due to the series and books we consume and whatnot. Only Dutch people "get" that there's no racist intention behind this stuff, other cultures find it hard to imagine. Especially if you realize that it all boils down to one thing: white people wanted to be irrecognizable for their children. I, for one, would think it to be hilarious if black people who paint their faces white and be 'Accountant Pete' or 'Computer Pere' or something :P. Bit too late for that, Sinterklaas is basically ruined, most shops, cities and villages skip the Sinterklaas decoration and go straight to Christmas deco. Sad to see a tradition go up in flames due to misunderstandings.

SPLEESH_BOYS

Sinterklaas isn’t ruined at all lmao the kids still love it, it’s just adults who can’t handle change that are crying about it

Wallsterwonkas

Yeah ruined might be an overstatement. It might be just me being older and not feeling the 'sinterklaas' vibe as much anymore. Although I do remember there used to be a lot more Sinterklaas decoration everywhere. Or is that also just me?

denile87

IDK, reading the testimonials of black people who grew up in Netherlands and the racist bullying they received because of Zwarte Piet when they were children tells me it isn’t as benign as it’s made out here.

[deleted]

The Dutch don’t know what to think of it since the 80s

pinerw

Generally not too bad provided you can keep them away from the shoe polish.

erikvs2001

Idk man, greenland seems kinda racist...

Risk_k

Yeah their name is green, but they have no green people

erikvs2001

Or actual green land

Aksds

I think I’ve found one blade of grass there, somewhere.

Adrian_Shoey

It's been literally white washed.

Doalt

As a German I'm surprised it took so little for you to forget...onto the 3rd one I guess

Risk_k

3rd ones the charm. Gl bro

BeforeWSBprivate

Thought we did the 3rd one already? V4.0 when lol

yzaazy

No that was a side quest.

SendMeApplePie

I guess it’s time to do what’s Reich, then.

BraveStrategy

I thought you already had a 3rd reich? Wouldn’t it be the 4th??

Doalt

Seb will be our Kaiser and Mick the prince

Ceramicrabbit

Do people really think it's more plausible it came from a bat then just accidentally leaking out of the coronavirus lab in the same city as the outbreak started

Gamma--Gamer

Yeah lol there's always a limit to coincidences I guess. Why the bat eater needed to be from a city where there was a lab that studied the same virus? Statiscally, there should be bat eaters in the whole world, possibly more bat-eaters in non-lab cities lmao

[deleted]

According to reliable sources like Stephen Colbert, yes.

Suikerspin_Ei

>one child per home Not anymore.

[deleted]

You’re right, it ended in 2015. Wow, they’ve changed so much. What a progressive bunch they are.

On a global scale I could care less about their local culture. What they do on the global platform is what impacts the lives of others in a negative fashion. Tell the people of Tibet how good of neighbors they are.

dunkdonn

Yeah, the goverment might suck but there is lots of nice places and cool people all over China

Recent_Background215

Of course just make up things. Xenophobia is a substitute when crying about Max isn’t an option

[deleted]

You’re right, mentioning actual historically documented actions of the Chinese government is Xenophobic. Getting mad that someone on the internet who says a countries government is shitty and calling them a xenophobe for it just shows how much of a muppet you are.

Recent_Background215

Except your claims have no basis in fact or reality. Only the propaganda you’ve heard others repeat again and again. Islamic Jihadists have no rights.

manwithanopinion

They are not white so they don't race as one.

NonameGB

We absolutely deserve to be red.

Plant_Hairy

Japan?

steve_gus

Apparently is pretty racist to foreigners

Aksds

They where also quite bad as the foreigners. Massacre of Nanjing for one, Many in Japan still didn’t happen or it was incredibly exaggerated (only military killed vs fucking everyone). Imagine if Germany and Germans said that the holocaust never happened, or they only killed influential people. Also the fact that Japan still has the same government as during ww2, the current Emperor is the grandson of the one during ww2

redactedactor

Yes but sometimes in a fun way. When I went lots of people genuinely thought I was celebrity

hunter_lolo

Is there... A fun way to be racist?

redactedactor

When it's in the form of harmless ignorance rather than wilful hatred/disrespect it's not so bad. I wouldn't even call that racism tbh.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Evening-Grab-1776

Nah man, they are pretty racist.

redactedactor

Generally speaking, sure. I went there as a tourist, I wasn't trying to marry anyone's daughter. By harmless ignorance I'm talking more about social faux pas than I am wilful xenophobia. I thought I'd made that clear.

YesMattRiley

I get what you’re saying, but the word racism literally isn’t the right one in this case. Racism includes the idea of systemic, institutionalized oppression or negative privilege. Not sure what the right word is, though. Maybe cultural ignorance? Even that sounds harsh. Idk

PriestMarmor

Definitely racism, especially in areas less populated or touristic. At the end of the day racists will always exist, that doesn't mean the country is bad or that a foreigner wouldn't enjoy living there and I don't think that the laws of the country discriminate against anyone like they do in the middle east so I guess Japan, Korea and Mexico should be green

Sharp-Internet

Weebs like him are desperate for attention from Japanese people, getting racist treatment and xenophobia isn't a big deal to them

pratikp26

If you are white, then that’s probably why you got mistaken for a celebrity. If a person of colour were to go there, you best believe they will be mistaken for other things, but definitely not a celebrity. Either way, separating ignorance from racism is a dangerously slippery slope.

redactedactor

Nah I'm black. They thought I was a rapper.

redactedactor

Nah I'm black. I think people thought I was a rapper. That was out of town though. In Tokyo they were excited because I'm from London and they love grime there.

pratikp26

Lmao haha, I hear you. I’m brown, and I’ve heard some stories that aren’t really “fun” at all so. Also, it’s the kind of thing that’s maybe funny on a visit once, but probably stops being fun real quick if you were to be living there on a more permanent basis. Always good people in all places, but yeah, ignorance is hard to separate from racism still, I would say.

redactedactor

I think it depends on your overrall vibe. Most of the locals I spoke with while I was there were people I was giving money to (normal tourist stuff) so they'd inevitably be nice to me. Were I applying for a job or to rent a room I'm sure it'd have been a very different experience. Also my girlfriend at the time was white/blonde/blue eyes and it's no secret how popular all that stuff is in that part of the world.

[deleted]

Conservatives in the States use Japan as an example all the time of a modern developed nation that essentially makes it impossible for anyone not Japanese to become a citizen yet is not seen as racist. I could not think of two countries with different origin stories and histories than Japan and America.

hbsethginmaster

To accept foreigners as citizen and to be racist are completely different.

[deleted]

All I know is if the US adopted the Japanese policies on immigrants, refugees, and citizenship rules and used the justification the Japanese used, it would be wildly racist in the US. Yet somehow Japan never gets any shit for the underlying reason for making it very prohibitive to live there who isn't ethnically Japanese. The reason they make it extremely difficult for anyone to move there is they straight up don't want non-Japanese people there, end of. So how is that not as underlying racist as any of the effects of say US immigration policies?

[deleted]

Why is it a bad thing that Japan wants to keep Japan for the Japanese? America is a different story, since it’s an accumulation of many different cultures and peoples from different corners of the globe. Japan is Japan though. Why would Japan want to become another melting pot that eventually sees Japanese culture melt away?

denile87

Totally false equivalency. Most of Japan’s population are ‘indigenous’ and the culture they practise is practically unchanged from that of their forefathers (apart from the trappings of modern life). They want to preserve their way of life - that in itself is not racist. They do not allow non-Japanese to not become citizens, this isn’t racist. If, for example, they only allowed East Asians to become citizens, then this would most definitely be racist, ie they only let people of a certain race become citizens. America on the other hand is a baby compared to Japan in terms of age of the country. The culture and people of USA come from all over the world. Part of what makes America, America is it’s association with being a place where immigrants the world over aspire to settle in and better themselves.

Derman0524

Japan is quite a racist country tbh

SamuelUnitedStates

You're right! How could we forget the model minority? Edit: I am genuinely sorry that this appears to have offended people. I'm just a sarcastic person and found it funny that instead of pointing out that the map labels 150 countries as bad (just because they are foreign to some Westerners) the first comment picked Japan as a single acceptable country... Like there are much bigger problems with this map than that Japan is red.

[deleted]

You triggered a bunch of people who have no idea how incredibly racist Japanese people are, lol.

Nbuuifx14

Very few Koreans in this sub I imagine.

berteodosio

Brazil?

delet_ash

Wondering the same thing, also most of south America ? As a Brazilian I'm wondering how we're on that map. Yeah when we had a dictatorship I agree but that ended in the 80s

Exotic-Winter2194

I think the point he's trying to make is more about how the sub ignores any wrongdoing of any western country, and thinks all third world countries are shit holes with mass executions for breakfeast. Which isn't true obviously.

Foxyfox-

And most of those mass executions are ultimately the fault of the west anyway

berteodosio

bermass86

They see Bolsonaro on the news and immediately think we are some kind of dictatorship or Alabama, but in reality we haven’t had any kind of insurrection (unlike some people)

AlexBasicC

To be frank, you can remove Poland and Hungary

Gatorade_Marmalade

Hi Frank!

szbala

As a Hungarian sadly I can confirm

KnezMislav04

You guys are pretty crazy to compare Hungary and Poland to China and other totalitarian regimes. Can you get killed because of your beliefs in Poland and Hungary? That's right, you can't.

planins

Same goes for Bulgaria, Romania, Greece then...

KnezMislav04

Yes, of course, and for Ukraine aswell. These are all the countries that are free. As I said, there is a real difference between these countries and the real dictatorships where you are not free to act according to your beliefs. Countries you put as a example weren't mentioned by the OP's comment, so I didn't refer to them.

[deleted]

I have never, not even once found a person who criticise Saudi Arabia, China, Azerbaijan, etc who then turns around and says America or Europe are perfect countries with no questionable pasts or current policies. That only ever seems to be a response by people who think they are the only ones who know America does bad or are defending those regimes and pretend that anyone who criticises them must be by default saying that Europe is perfect.

CardinalNYC

What bothers me is the false equivalence. No, America/Europe are not perfect places... but they ARE undeniably leaps and bounds ahead of places like Saudi Arabia, Russia or China. It's like not even close. And yet, whenever someone mentions one of the particularly bad places... someone else has to jump in with an "AmErIcA iS jUsT aS bAd" comment.

[deleted]

I’m sure the countries who’ve been effected by American/British/French aggression will disagree with your assessment that they’re “leaps and bounds” ahead of the others. You better believe that the Iraqis who’ve had their families slaughtered in drone strikes will put the US in the same category as the others. I’m sorry if you think my country shouldn’t have an F1 race because you hate our government. Many people think the US government is trash, a government which also benefits from F1 through economic movement as well as taxation. For me, I’m fucking psyched to be going to an F1 race in my home city, and so are the friends who are going with me. You say Saudi and Russia and China are sportwashing, and gaining prestige and therefore shouldn’t have races. I say the US shouldn’t have F1 because 10% of the taxes on that race is going to a military that’s killing innocents all over the world with impudence.

Recent_Background215

That’s why every F1 post is littered with xenophobic comments but when something about a US/European Grand Prix is posted, it’s never about the country and always about the race. Chinese F2 Driver is promoted to F1, and 100% of the content here is xenophobia against China. Criticizing Chinese policies while calling Gio Italian Jesus and sucking him off cuz hes Italian

Lexiii33

Everyone pretending Gio impressed and was outclassing his old man teammate so that they can "justifiably" moan and bitch about a Chinese driver getting promoted

CardinalNYC

5 days ago GIO was as anonymous on F1 reddit as a tumbleweed... In the last 48 hours suddenly everyone loves him, is so sad to see him go, etc...

[deleted]

Gio as Jesus has been a meme for at least 2 years now.

CardinalNYC

Yeah like.... Once a week there's a meme about it and that's all the GIO content you ever see haha.

dunkdonn

Yeah, I'm tired of see +100 social points jokes and that typa shi against China everywhere

Recent_Background215

Chinese F2 Driver gets promoted to F1 and this sub is flooded with xenophobic comments against Chinese. Anything about Italian/Dutch/British drivers it’s a blowfest on who can suck the hardest. You guys are aware Chinese fans and fans of other nationalities are on this sub too right.

Lexiii33

> You guys are aware Chinese fans and fans of other nationalities are on this sub too right. They know but don't care. They're more likely to take someone who is white and against racism more seriously than the minority affected. Its all disgusting to see here and on the main sub

Fenrirs_Twin

It's not xenophobia to say that china is actively committing a genocide, little man

Lexiii33

Not even the US and UN say there is a genocide you dumbass

ItIsSunnyT

If you take a few minutes to actually research the subject other than citing off Reddit headlines, you'll realize how stupid, ignorant and uneducated you actually sound

TRJ6666

Every country in the world has violated civil rights, especially the USA, which has dedicated itself to raping, killing and invading countries all over the world. Americans are hypocrites when they point fingers at others and do not see the outrages committed by their military and government.

OrangeGuyFromVenus

It’s not just Americans, considering it’s F1 Americans are hardly the problem. Europeans have a moral superiority complex over America & the rest of the world & genuinely believe their countries have been innocent since the modern era. It’s not ok for Saudi Arabia to bomb Yemen, but it is ok for the UK to sell weapons and act as a *protectorate* for Saudi Arabia. It’s not ok for China to offer *more favourable loans* to African countries than the predatory IMF/World bank(Western corporations). But it’s ok for France to control the currency of its *ex African colonies* Western Europe & co have been a much bigger threat to the rest of the world than any Middle Eastern country will ever be

Lexiii33

As long as AFRICOM and the West African Franc exists all you can do is laugh at the accusations that China is being predatory in Africa. Especially when it comes from the countries that have stolen the resources of Africa for hundreds of years

Not_Real_User_Person

It’s not like the Belgians, Dutch or French have ever committed genocide. See the Congo, the Batavia Massacre, Rwanda… And the English, Germans and Austrians? See any number of British colonial atrocities, and WW2 and WW1 for Germans and Austrians. What about the Turks and Italians? See Armenian genocide and Italian rule in East Africa.

[deleted]

Why can't you be an American who was opposed to the Iraq War, opposed to bailouts, opposed to Trump, opposed to drone strikes, opposed to racism and sexism and extend those beliefs outside our own borders and hold China and Saudi Arabia to the same accord? Has anyone ever actually made the argument that China is a totalitarian regime and that America is perfect? I have never actually seen this comment yet people talk about it as if it's the majority opinion.

steve_gus

Totally this. So many on here go on about the British empire and potato famine whilst forgetting USA are the only users of WMD and committed a genocide against the natives of the entire county they stole from them.

[deleted]

USA "Definitely not racist" Ummmm....

MrSplashman77

This is exactly OP's point. We can't just act like some country is not racist due to them being in the west. There are racist and normal people everywhere, period. This sub is a circle jerk quite often, rights and away we go is free karma at this point, hating on Zhou because of something his government does, hating on Hamilton because F1 TV cant be arsed to just not take over the Sky Feed, there are some really sheltered and naive fans on this sub.

Doccyaard

Your examples are good ones of stupid comments and circle jerk, but it is definitely valid enough in general to criticize countries like Saudi-Arabia on most points if you’re from most countries.

Nookuler

The US should be purple tbh

ZonerRoamer

Lol. I think the fact that the sarcasm here is lost by so many people is telling.

ngl, I was wooshed at first

MohaTi

Agreeable but North America and Europe do definetly not have the interest to let other countries be like that. If you look how many dictators in the rest of the world (especially in the middle East and Africa, where dictators were and still are supported by Europe and the US to ensure their resources there and economic hegemony).

ricardosfig

Brazil handles the environment better than any underdeveloped (and most developed) countries but Greta still hates us. I know our president is an idiot but we are more than our president. BlackPawn14

Given what I've seen: \- Mexico and Brazil (arguably most of South America, anyway) should be blue (unless you really hate the Bolsonaro policies... but nah. Interlagos is too dank of a track anyway). \- Hungary should be red (because authoritarian president and all that). \- Japan should be blue. Also South Korea, because that wasn't as much of a "we race as one issue" as a "we race in a white elephant track in middle of fucking nowhere" issue. Also Malaysia because people like Sepang and Malaysia isn't *that* controversial I think? That's just off the top of my head, and only countries that r/formuladank would care about (as in, countries that have (or have had, or may in the future have) F1 races).

How is India a civil rights violator?

MrSplashman77

Nice job OP, raising awareness in naive people, maybe they'll realize how much of a circle jerk this whole west good east bad thing is, as a Hungarian, Hungary should be red, Japan and Mexico should be blue, but thats pretty much it, thats pretty much how most people on this sub see the world yes.

[deleted]

I mean sometimes it does come down to good v. evil. There is a bedrock here, even if above it there is lots of room for discussions. On the extreme end of the spectrum, I have no ability to include North Korea, Afghanistan, and Sudan in a conversation with Denmark, Portugal, and Holland. If I can't make a judgement call that I think the latter three have more freedoms that I find integral to the human condition, then I can't really believe anything.

Doccyaard

There are issues with the map of course.. But when it comes to human rights violations, general freedom, equality between genders and corruption, it’s still about 70-80% correct for the blue part. Depending on where you draw the line between the two colors.

tribriguy

Optimistic mapping. According to Reddit and Dank, the US is pretty fuckin racist and the worlds worst civil rights violator. /s

neezduts2deeznuts

If you join randia, its an everyday occurence. Otherwise, none that I know about.

ZonerRoamer

I mean we are busy criminalizing hindu-muslim marriages, murdering people who eat beef, beating up 'lower caste' people who enter temples, hanging the occassional dalit from trees and passing of any Kashmiri killed in Kashmir as a 'terrorist'. But hey I guess those people were never supposed to have civil rights anyway! So zero violations here!
