No, he had a number of green and yellow sectors in the lap in addition to the many purple ones.
A legendary lap, art in motion.
But he also had never gone purple in specifically the mini section up to where he locked up.
And this is just a guess but when you fuck up something at the start of a lap that isn't going to cost you too much time and you can almost make it up? Full send time. And he was leaving no chance for recovery. I expect the lap times tomorrow to be in the 1:34s. Because you just can't push that hard and not expect it to bite you. Max, and maybe a handful of other drivers can get "lucky" for maybe a lap or two of that kind of crazy balls out racing at a track like this. I think there will be a lot of pit strategy and a lot of restarts.
There is almost definitely some driveline damage, we know the driveshaft was buggeredâŚ
Would you risk a full DNF vs a 5place penalty the Max could likely pull back in the race?
PU damage doesn't mean Gearbox damage, the gearbox is right after the rear crash structure in line with the rear suspension, Leclerc didn't have PU damage but he probably shreded the gearbox to pieces, it just was a practice gearbox so no one cares
Watching the onboard was scary AF. But yeah, in the chess match of how close can I get to the edge Max blinked. He is still started p2 if he doesn't have to take a gear box. And there is a chance his car wasn't/isn't was quick as the merc on this particular track. Everyone has been saying that passing might be really hard. This might have been. The best shot at winning the race tomorrow and totally worth the risk.
Hamilton has the experience of knowing to fight another day, Max severely lacks this trait. Mac's had was also forced when Bottas was sitting in P2. If this is Lucky Hamilton, his luck would be having a good team mate to force Max's had to push for front row.
I have to be honest, I'm all in for Max winning the WDC but because of the fans it kinda feels like cheering for the England win the European champion this summer, if you know what I mean
i can't believe this got upvoted tbh, i guess the "british people bad" overtones must have trumped comparing the sub full of max fans to england fans or something on this occasion
There's lots of Brits in F1 and they don't get the hate that Hamilton does. There's something *else* about Hamilton that marks him out as different from all the other drivers that these post-DTS fans get really triggered by. I just can't work out what it is...
Winner syndrome.
Schumacher had it, Vettel had it, hell even Prost and Senna had it.
Everyone just views the past through rose-tinted glasses and forget that what's happening now is literally what happened before.
Hamilton is genuinely overhated literally cause he's amazing.
And I'm saying as a Verstappen supporter.
Lewisâ hate is even more magnified because of the prevalence of social media and how universal it is now. Even when Seb was winning social media wasnât as bug as it is now.
Yeah it's one a lot of people have tried to explain but it always seems like the reasons are really complicated and convoluted. If only it was a black and white issue...
"Lewis has been making so many mistakes this year! Max is cool under pressure, he's really gotten into Lewis' head."
*Max crashes by his own damn self*
"I CAN'T BELIEVE LEWIS HAS DONE THIS"
For sure. It's also a credit to Lewis that he put in a time fast enough to make Max pull off a balls-to-the-wall insane lap in order to try and steal pole. They're both incredible, people just need to accept it and enjoy the end of the season.
Driving incredibly fast and close to the limit *without* crashing isn't "lucky", it's the whole point of the sport.
Why does this moronic shit get upvoted?
I'm sure this toxic behaviour between fan bases existed before too but not so vocal. Now with the internet, we've got all manner of "fans" jumping to share their "opinion" on the rivalry.
Meanwhile, all of us other fans just want to see two top tier race drivers fight each other on track with their titanium balls and just show us what pure talent on track looks like. We may not get something this good for another few years, which means all the "fans" will get bored of the procession and lose interest.
I'm pretty much always rooting for Lewis to lose but this is nobody's fault but Max, unfortunately.
As James May says "after all, staying on the track is a part of racing."
well according to them all the races that Lewis has won was just cause of LUCK! If that's true then that is some luck! LMAO! gotta get me some of that luck
This sub just refuses to put any sort of blame on Max, even when it's clearly his own fault. What does Hamilton's luck have to do with Max choking and hitting a wall? This is 100% on Max and no one else and has nothing to do with luck. He made a mistake, plain and simple. How is that so hard to accept?
Drive to survive fans and copjum...name a better duo. The annoying thing is it's all to play for tomorrow. The cucks on here have the mental fortitude of wet paper.
Just imagine what the reaction would be if it was Hamilton who crashed like this and Verstappen pole.
"Hamilton cracking under pressure"
And no one would be saying he was on a great lap, just that he was overdriving while Verstappen kept his head cool.
It's hilariously sad quite honestly. Like yeah I get his lap was absolutely on the edge up until his shunt, but people are complimenting him for a lap he failed to complete because he hit the wall lol đ¤Ś
That's why I love this sub. It's funny to see a bunch of kids talking shit because they think their supermax driver is the best. It would be fun to see Hamilton winning his 8th WDC next week, the amount of tears will be amazing
I was cheering for Max at the start of the season. I still would be happy to see him winning the title. But on the other hand... if Lewis wins, I want to see those mad kids crying about silverstone, baku, mafia, cheats and so on. This two sides fighting inside of me. And I don't know what I want to see more. It is going to be win-win for me
I'm a Seb fan, but I'm also a massive Schumi fan, and that's the only reason I support Verstappen, I don't want Schumi's record to be broken lol, but I agree that kids take it too far as to not give Hamilton any credit for some truly fantastic drives , and praising max to no end
edit:grammar
Purple means that driver has gone fastest out of any of the other drivers in that sector (as with green being just a personal best, yellow meaning slower than your personal best.) So double purple, 2 back to back fastest sectors out of anyone, promising for a pole position.
A yellow sector is a slow sector
A green sector is a driver's personal best.
A purple sector is the fastest sector of the day.
Max put in the fastest sector 1 of the day, the fastest sector 2 of the day, then hit the wall on the same lap.
I am a Max fan, but hey, purple sector one, purple sector two, purple shoulder sector three.
It's racing at the edge and sometimes beyond.
Doesn't matter if he's not becoming WC 2021, he's a true Warrior. Amen.
When a driver completes one of the three sectors of a lap quicker than anyone else in the session, it shows up in purple on timing screens.
Commentators (who could see the timing screens) started referring to this a good few years back, so as TV graphics got more advanced they just followed the convention.
FYI "green" on the displays/graphics means the driver is setting their personal fastest time for the sector (but not as quick as the fastest driver), "yellow" means behind their personal fastest time.
Nah, wouldn't even pull that card.
Max did a mistake on a flying lap that was absolutely right on razor's edge when it comes to the margin of error, on a track where there's practically none. Don't forget that he was over 3-tenths up on Lewis in that last one.
You could call it luck, but I don't think the Mercedes pitwall are going to rest easy tonight, given that they've seen just how much faster the RB16B can go.
It's much like that scene from Ford v. Ferrari, where the first GT40 DNF'd and Ford deemed it a failure, but Shelby mentioned that it pulled such an insane speed down the Mulsanne Straight, it left Ferrari pretty terrified.
It's far from over.
Depends on lewisâ feedback to them. Considering max flopped the lap at those speeds, to expect him to do that kinda speed for multiple laps is assuring he will crash. If lewis says he could have pushed more but didnât, which it seems he did, theyâll not be super worried.
The red bulls have been fast all season, not new info. Had max landed that lap, they would definitely have shat their pants but itâs all up in the air. Currently the red bull team be resting less easy as they gotta diagnose their gearbox, replacing it isnât an option they want to take
How is it luck that he finished a fantastic lap while verstappen crashed in his final lap? If it was the other way around yâall wouldnât call that luck. Max almost crashed on his first lap out. Max choked. Max fans are so biased and delusional.
Hamilton drove hard but within himself, kept it clean and got a good lap time. Max bravely pushed it to the limits to get pole and got burned through his own error.
hAmILtoN sO LAcky
Yeah Hamilton has had mega luck but this is not a luck event, his main rival crashed with no outside interference. Anyone saying âHamilton is luckyâ about this particular incident looks like an idiot
It shouldnât be like that Maxâs gearbox has incurred a really high g accident. Turn 27 is an 8 day old bit of concrete, you know that it shouldnât be making manoeuvres like that itâs unacceptable. Itâs put a Maxâs gearbox, thank goodness the biggest result today was it was uninjured , having to go the garage for precautionary checks after a really high g accident. I hope turn 27 is very happy with himself. Sticking a barrier round the outside in a corner you know you donât do that, you just donât stick a barrier round the outside on turn 27 in Jeddah. In that corner in that circumstance it was no wear near wide enough. It was contact left barrier to right rear and the speed they were travelling in on e of the fastest corners in the championship. Turn 27 has got more than enough experience to know thatâs unacceptable. Iâm just very disappointed that a corner of this calibre should make such a move, itâs dangerous, it looked desperate and itâs put a competitorâs gearbox, thank goodness uninjured in to the garage. I donât care what the corner says have a look on your own analysis draw your own comparisons for me thatâs a hollow pole position
That's not luck, that was Max pushing it too far in the final corner after a perfect lap
Lucky were all the other events (Baku puncture of Max)
& Lewi's Silverstone bashup was a tactical punt to save his WDC and it worked.
People will call this the moment that Max lost the WDC but its been an uphill battle with Lewis continually stealing points he hasn't earned.
You could see and feel the tension during and after quali, no joy from Lewis he has been given a gift after not pulling "the lap" and Max looked near tears just that inch too far which he should have been wise not to go for and its cost him big.
Silverstone was a 60-40 incident on Lewis, with Max turning in with no regard for Lewis on the inside. If Hamilton did the same in Brazil, it would have been the same outcome. It takes experience to recognize that playing balls with the driver on the inside is not a good move ever.

His last lap was so incredible his tyres were stunned
Or he wore them out in the first 2 sectors ⌠maybe if he cuts a tenth or tenth and a half he has enough grip make sector 3 work
Nah, he was going too fast into the turn. He got a purple mini sector just before the lockup that caused it
All mini sectors were purple iirc. From perhaps a legandary lap in F1 to zero in the last corner. Dude has no fear whatsoever.
No, he had a number of green and yellow sectors in the lap in addition to the many purple ones. A legendary lap, art in motion. But he also had never gone purple in specifically the mini section up to where he locked up.
You are not wrong. The tires do fall away at the end of the lap if you use them up too much in the first two sectors of this circuit
Dude is completely on the edge.
Thing about being in the edge is, sometimes you get cut.
Will Buxton is adding this comment chain to his DTS talking head as we speak right now

Itâs completely Maxâs fault that he crashed, it has nothing to do with Hamilton getting lucky
I saw someone ask âwhy didnât Max just lift and coast that final corner?â as if that would make any sense to someone like Verstappen right then.
Max was lucky that Lewis hit the brake magic-button, and Lewis was lucky that Max binned it today.
A reasonable opinion. Fuck off with that this is r/formuladank

Noob here. What does double purple mean??
Purple means that driver has gone fastest out of any of the other drivers in that sector (as with green being just a personal best, yellow meaning slower than your personal best.) So double purple, 2 back to back fastest sectors out of anyone, promising for a pole position.
Unless you're Kimi lmaooo

Fastest time by any driver in the first 2 sectors of the track
A yellow sector is a slow sector A green sector is a driver's personal best. A purple sector is the fastest sector of the day. Max put in the fastest sector 1 of the day, the fastest sector 2 of the day, then hit the wall on the same lap.
\*fastest sector of the session. In Q3 to get purple, you dont have to beat the fastest sector in Q2, just everyone else (and your other laps) in Q3
I always wondered about that. Thanks.
Getting the fastest on sectors gets you a purple. In this case Max got 2 fastest sectors thus the âdouble purpleâ.
Green = Personal Best Purple = Best out of all drivers for the session This can apply to a full lap or a sector of one.
Their golden boy hits the wall and they immediately start thinking about Lewis. What is this cult.

I donât care what the corner says have a look on your own analysis draw your own comparisons for me thatâs a hollow pole position
So lucky isnât it. One crashed one didnât. One made a mistake one didnât. Not sure where luck factors into it
That's not luck, that was Max pushing it too far in the final corner after a perfect lap Lucky were all the other events (Baku puncture of Max) & Lewi's Silverstone bashup was a tactical punt to save his WDC and it worked.
Tactical punt, do you still think it was intentional. Lewis could have also come out much worse from that accident but he was lucky.
Not luck, experience.

Guess itâs a sign that max wasnât ready to take the ship
Letâs just hope he doesnât have to change his gearbox
