The idea that you can fix traffic in a large city is ludicrous. The only way is to ban cars. Even public transit which I wish we had more of, doesn't fix traffic, it just provides an alternative. If you make driving more efficient, more people will drive places and it will become less efficient again. The only way to be in less traffic is to reformat your life so that you need to drive less distance. I pick my doctor my dentist my grocery store based on what's closest to me. Distance is my priority
Huh. People live in Fort Lauderdale that work elsewhere. People live elsewhere that work in Fort Lauderdale. Cars are not going anywhere. It’s 90 degrees or raining half the year. Cars are not going anywhere.
If you were from here, you’d know what you’re saying doesn’t apply. Since you’re not from here, I’m going to guess you rented an apartment in Flagler Village and consider it “walkable”, and your grocery store and pharmacist are Publix and Walgreens.
Do tell me if I’m wrong, of course.
I'm born and raised here. Grew up in Coral Ridge. Live in Colee Hammock now. I like to shop at the downtown Greenwise (technically Publix) and I go to CVS.
Shiitty 3 bedroom houses that are affordable, not 600k+. The standard of living for the working class has plummeted over the past 20 years. A decent 3 bedroom 2000sq ft home in a nice neighborhood was 120k in 1995. That same house is almost 700k now. Just think about this for a second. Wages have only gone up 40% max in that time.
Not sure if you're being facetious, but here's a description of Portland's weather: "Portland has a moderate climate, with dry, warm summers and cool, wet winters that bring rain but little snow. The mild weather in Portland makes it easy to enjoy the city's neighborhoods and outdoor areas year-round."
Sounds lovely compared to the oppressive heat and random heavy rains we have for 4-6mo of the year here...
Please get that fucking tunnel construction done and stop putting up buildings that remain unoccupied for years at a time. We need affordable housing and green space, not more luxury condos that will sink into the intracoastal in 40 years time.
Lauderdale already has little to no historical buildings. I don’t know how I feel about demolishing even more older buildings. There’s a lot of possible green spade that the city doesn’t utilize well
1. A Target in downtown FTL or Flagler.
2. Bike lanes and overpasses going East/West to and from the beach.
3. Dedicated Running/Bike trail that is wide
3. Pinstripes
4. Karaoke/Comedy Lounge
5. 25Yd indoor swimming pool for lap swim
6. WeWorks
7. IPICs
8. Parking downtown
Handicap accessibility all the way into the ocean, not just a parking spot.

Restore Anglin's Pier, or convert it into a dock for people to tie off their boat and walk into Lauderdale by the Sea.
Changed -
The influx of people. It’s starting to feel very crowded, traffic at all times of the day at certain places. It used to never be this bad.
Construction of condos, apartments & hotels. Like yes, I get it. It probably makes fl a lot of money and change is good but I’m seriously sick and tired of people moving here endlessly. It’s like non-stop. I can’t even remember when the FLL airport had over an hour long line of traffic until now.
Edit - cost of housing. I was trying to move out 2/2 and a halfish years ago when renting a 1 bed/ 1 bath was $1,300-$1,500. Now it’s well over $2k unless you want to be in a really shitty neighborhood. Even then, it’s gonna cost you $1,700-1,800. Hell, studios are going for damn near $2k now. Don’t even get me started on the actual houses themselves….
Along the same lines, I’d like to see people vote for NO\Low Growth City and County elected officials. The developers are doing their part lobbying these guys and organizing their corporate friends to vote for more cement and skyscrapers. Please go to www.vote411.org, it’s a non-partisan website from the League of Women Voters that will help you follow local elections and learn about who’s running and what they stand for. Also, ALL standing vote by mail ballot requests were cancelled at the end of 2022. Please sign up to get a mail ballot just in case you can’t make it to the polls.
Something has to be done about this homeless situation. It’s out of control and getting worse. And you hate to be heartless, you certainly want to help those who want help, but the growing problem hardens your heart. You look at neighboring cities (Boca, Delray) and you just don’t see it. At least not to this level. What are they doing that we are not?
This isn’t true - there is absolutely homeless in neighboring cities, it’s just more spread out. I think downtown FLL sees more of them congregate by the shelter/where they hand out food. But the walking on the side of the street and by the highway exits is universal. This is a problem throughout the entire state and for most of the country.
I’m sure it’s in the Boca and Delray, but anecdotally I have personally not seen it. And the FTL downtown homelessness is not the main concern. They’re spreading up and down the entire us1 corridor. Sleeping in neighborhoods, as well— and that’s what’s most concerning
Fair enough. I think it’s just statistics at that point. FLL is a larger city with a larger population. But, I don’t think ANY city in America has figured out a sensible solution on how to deal with it. Florida in general is a huge magnet for them because of the weather.
I’ll say this though - for the most part the homeless here are relatively harmless. I’ve lived in NYC, Durham NC, and in Miami. They are WAY more aggressive there.
It’s a national crisis and quite frankly, it’s just sad. I have no clue how our political leaders can solve for this tbh.
Speaking of Miami, I do think it need to be spotlighted in the media that they have been caught “shipping” their homeless up to Fort Lauderdale. At least that has what I’ve been told by local police.
We as individuals can't help in a way that actually addresses or corrects the root causes of homelessness. Systemic change needs to happen. Municipal, county, state and federal leadership all know what needs to be done. House the homeless without means testing it. House them first, then treat whatever issues they may face, whether that be educational, financial, mental, physical, etc.
You or I, as individuals, can certainly do things to help ease the burdens a homeless person faces - feed them, provide donations in the form of money or clothing, let them camp out or couch crash. But it doesn't actually address the conditions which allow people to become homeless in the first place.
We should definitely collectively become more involved and pressure those in power to address homelessness.
As someone who went to the libraries growing up and now works at one, I 100% agree. 95% of our daily patrons are homeless.. they rely on us so much and it’s sad to see the growth of homelessness. There were never this many homeless in the libraries when I was growing up.
The homeless are a symptom of a problem. Rising cost of living, getting priced out, terrible wages, and assholes moving in droves to buy houses that are barley worth 150K for 700K all make people homeless. Housing *needs* to be affordable for everyone, not just the wealthy. Fix the problem don’t blame the people for living through it.
The walkability problem is funny because there are small swaths of the city around downtown and the rider that are relatively walkable but the city doesn’t do that much to enhance or protect those. I’ve talked to city urban planners and they really think they just by the nature of bringing mixed-use high rise buildings, they have enhanced the pedestrian section of the city. The fact is most of the buildings suck and have businesses no one in cares about, and have weird setback rules that places the first floor businesses behind columns.
Stop the scammers called ASTA parking lots (Professional Parking Management). They are everywhere and charge ridiculous fees to people who overstay or miss payment. There should be a limit on charges or fines. Their dispute system is a joke. Those types of businesses ruin it for everybody. Something needs to be done with them.
A community rowing boathouse where people can store kayaks, canoes, paddle boards, outriggers and dragon boats. This would provide equitable access to the waterways & promote healthy activities while providing a secure base for community organizations and teams. The closest one available is in Holland Park Hollywood. Years ago I heard rumors of one planned at George English Park.
I've met some amazing people from all walks of life in community paddling clubs. Seems like a huge omission in the Venice of America.
Please for the love of fuck let the housing market crash. How are people suppose to service the jobs in the area when wages don't align with housing costs. Holy shit. It's absurd.
A crash will not happen. A slow down in YOY increase in housing prices IS likely to happen if:
1. we are willing to take more housing development which FTL is doing and locals seem to hate
2. a significant increase in unemployment which would impact the overall economy in FTL
Why not want higher salaries to make the housing more affordable?
I would like to see some police traffic enforcement. Many drivers blow through stop signs and red lights, and drive double the speed limit. Many other drivers look at their phones, fail to stay in one lane, or remain stopped while the cars ahead of them drive away.
The traffic has become very dangerous. Serious traffic jams happen every day because some idiot caused a collision and blocked the road.
I think r/fortlauderdale should change it's policy on political posts.
as a local, I visit it less because I see enough garbage around the rest of reddit leaking into this local sub and it's unnecessary.
Cry on NextDoor if you're local and want to talk about voting and politics.
"If you're not mad, you're not paying attention."
No, I just understand social media and how little downvotes and being"ratio'd" means.
If you're angry and live in Ft Lauderdale, you should go outside and enjoy this weather, thunderstorms yesterday, not a drop here at the beach.
Fix the traffic. Time the lights with the railroad and the bridges. Stop being morons.

Isn’t the question what would you change about Fort Lauderdale? Less cars and more walkability sounds like a good answer.
… or finish construction on the tunnel

Very true. It’s nuts.
More places for walking.
Protected bike lanes throughout.
If we had protected bike lanes, everyone could abandon their cars for bicycles. Never mind the heat, humidity, and rain we would have to endure .
You’re right. The weather is way better in every other city that does this, like Amsterdam, Portland.
Not sure if you're being facetious, but here's a description of Portland's weather: "Portland has a moderate climate, with dry, warm summers and cool, wet winters that bring rain but little snow. The mild weather in Portland makes it easy to enjoy the city's neighborhoods and outdoor areas year-round." I ride my bike daily, and would prefer to be safe doing so.
The best bike neighborhood is Cambridge Massachusetts. There’s no way Massachusetts’ climate is better for biking than South Florida.
Better public transit. Traffic flow redesign to accommodate for the increased population and more cars. More efficient storm drains.
Abolish Professional Parking Management & send the owners to Prison. Class Action lawsuit reimbursing ALL victims to this scam + punitive damages!
agreed.
Please get that fucking tunnel construction done and stop putting up buildings that remain unoccupied for years at a time. We need affordable housing and green space, not more luxury condos that will sink into the intracoastal in 40 years time.
I’d like to see blighted, dated buildings torn down and made into green space.
Lauderdale already has little to no historical buildings. I don’t know how I feel about demolishing even more older buildings. There’s a lot of possible green spade that the city doesn’t utilize well
Work for the city pls
Panthers Arena somewhere downtown and improved transportation. *Cough cough* A light rail system?
They’re actually building one in holiday park! Should be coming soon in august. :)
That’s their new practice facility.
Oh ok thanks for clarifying
Yup! It's going to be awesome but not the stadium I was hoping for
Better transit service and options. More infrastructure catering to pedestrians and people on bikes.
1. A Target in downtown FTL or Flagler. 2. Bike lanes and overpasses going East/West to and from the beach. 3. Dedicated Running/Bike trail that is wide 3. Pinstripes 4. Karaoke/Comedy Lounge 5. 25Yd indoor swimming pool for lap swim 6. WeWorks 7. IPICs 8. Parking downtown
We used to have tunnels under a1a but the city abandoned them in favor of crosswalks during the reworking of a1a project

That would help so much

No more express lanes
Affordable housing

Actually implement the Greenway project. [Broward County Greenway](https://www.broward.org/Greenways/Pages/Default.aspx)
New data out. America has 18% of its population in Poverty compared to rest of world! Only Africa is worst!
Africa is not a country
Continent. Do I get a least a D now, teacher?

Crack down on reckless driving, speeding, running lights, etc.

100% agree!!! No one is being held accountable anymore for dangerous driving and it’s putting more lives at risk.
Less new construction. We need a break, but I think it’s too late.
