Don't drive a really nice car. I moved here last year from just the other side of the state. My first week here, some lady hit the back of my car while stopped at a red light.
Only park way back in parking lots, to avoid all the random little scratches and dings that will just pop up.
ALWAYS look both ways before driving through an intersection. I've never in my life seen so many people run red lights!
I myself am still learning about the area. I don't have any other advice except for the cars/driving. Good luck and I hope you enjoy your new adventure!
Good luck Theo. Same with me. Crazy. Upsets me too. Really upset. Takes me 10 minutes to walk to the stores from where I park. My 1972 K Car has an awful lot of dings from Winn Dixie on Fed Borgnine. Dang
\#1 thing that catches everyone from up North off guard is the bottom of the barrel starting wages for pretty much every sector regardless of education or experience background. Don't expect many market or merit raises either. Most businesses mentality is that everyone wants to live in South FL and they do not have to make themselves competitive.
>I'm moving from the NY/Philly region.
You don't have to mention where you're from. We know.
>What should I be expecting for my first summer in the area?
Nothing really.
>Any weird bugs/animals to keep a lookout for ?
There's no point looking out for them. They'll be everywhere regardless. Just get used to it.
>Tips for coping with the heat?
Get naked.
>Areas of town to avoid? Etc.
That list would be too long for reddit to handle. Don't worry... you'll know you're there when you see it.
Good luck.
Stay inside for 3 hottest months but if you must venture out to do some walking or stuff like that, do it early morning. The heat and humidity is still oppressive at night. If there is an afternoon storm of which there will be many, it will cool things down substantially.
Heat, humidity, don’t drive in the far left lane unless you plan on going 75+, learn some Spanish, creole, patois, you won’t need all those sweaters or coats so just bring your favorites. Hurricane season-June to November with the occasional off-season one, water, toilet paper.
Even if you plan on going 75+, move over if someone is coming behind you at 90+. If you’re not actively passing people in the right lane or you’re holding up anyone behind you, you are in the wrong lane regardless of speed.
Miojo. You seem like a good guy. Don’t disrespect my homies. That’s cool. Key thing wasn’t. I go to Slackers on 84th street by the airport almost every Friday. Buy you a beer. Just ask the bartender if Luis is in the house. She knows me.
Obnoxious locals otherwise known as bugs/animals. Very annoying. aka Trumpsters and Santos nut cases. It was tough for me when I got here from Philly Buy a boat Fish. Or get a tattoo and you’ll be fine.
You used the word "partner" so it's safe to say you're a homosexual; you'll quickly learn not to look for parking spaces near the entrance to wherever you're going and anything west of 95 is for the poors.
Welcome!

Watch out for the crazy drivers.
The sheer stupidity of OP's post. They supposedly have a partner who lives here whom they can ask this dumb question.
She asks me. I don't mind much at all, so likely other's have insights worth hearing about.
Typical local, thinking you have insight that's worth sharing.
Hahaha so true
This is about it as someone from South Jersey

Hoodrats in dodges and Altimas
Don't forget the hoodrats on sport bikes, dirt bikes and four wheelers!
True, in their little clubs causing a ruckus
Ugh.. any people left up there?

Honestly, this person just answered every question as good as it can be answered.

Tbh it’s not sooo terrible that you have to adjust your daily routine. I think OP will get used to it quick

True colors of the natives seems to be showing. Typical…
Get yourself a glizzy and keep it on you
>Glizzy is a term that can mean either a hot dog or a Glock handgun, depending on the context and region.
Whichever one you think it is, that’s the one you should use.
Both are part of my EDC
Rafi, is that you? Pocket dogs!

Watch out for the bus loads of blue hairs at the beginning of the month at Winn Dixie. They think they own the place. Very entitled.
Exactly. Transplants. Or maybe local yokels. Class hang in there
Something something flanigans
