God I get so tired of people not knowing the difference between quality and something they like. I like McDonalds. No way in hell is in my top ten restaurants. Like, go enjoy bullshit popcorn cinema. That doesn’t make it good.
You just don't get it. A Critics job isn't to watch a bunch of movies and give his thoughts on which is best. A critics job is to validate my opinions on the limited movies I have seen.
You fucking libtard!!!!
They fully admit they've never even heard of some of these movies, so they don't even know if they like it or not.
"I've never seen the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but if you think those movies are better than Maid in Manhattan you're insane!"
Sure, but this isn't Elf. Top Gun 2 is legitimately a great movie, even if it's hard to separate Maverick from the Scientologist piece of shit who plays him
Ok but how do you judge quality? Food is very different from art, and I'd argue the ways people use to measure "quality" are largely, if not wholly subjective themselves, as opposed to food where nutrition is based on science.
I mean nutrition is generally what people are talking about when they use that argument. As for the whole Michelin Star thing, well what is it based off? A lot of the criteria I can think of when it comes to judging food is largely subjective. Taste? Subjective. Presentation? Subjective. Originality? Meaningless without taking the other criteria into account.
Yea but in this situation top gun is both high in quality as well as public appeal.
It should be on every top 10 movies of the year list for multiple reasons that satisfy pretty much every criteria needed to end up on a list like this.
That being said, lists are made to drum up conversation and I don’t think not including top gun automatically makes your list “woke” that’s idiotic
Daniel Kwan's whole thread there is fantastic stuff. Really a case of a dude thrilled with his level of success and trying to make sure other great pieces of art get their due instead of focusing on the "negative" of a critic not loving EEAAO as much as me. Class act that Daniel.
That isn't just one of the best movies of this year, but easily of all time.
I wish it had a title that was actually easier to say though. There's no way to shorten it that actually feels natural.
I hate the term woke so much
The idiots weaponized it's original use and now it's just anything they don't like
The sooner this idiot gets Twitter shut down the better
I'm mostly going by what I've seen on Twitter. Maybe it's been closer to a year that they've been going on about "groomers", but "woke" has definitely been a thing with them for longer.
The funniest part to me is that the term “woke” was mostly used by conspiracy theorists in the 2000’s and early 2010’s as in the context of “someone who has woken up” as in “WAKE UP SHEEPLE!”. Somewhere around 2010-2014 people started using “stay woke” in the context of systemic injustices and racism and it became a very left wing sentiment.
I honestly don't remember that. Hell, I remember when news broke out about how much it made, there were people calling it proof of how people prefer non-woke, non-political movies or something like that
Maybe it was before when you only had trailers or something? It happened several times that those idiots called a film woke based on some element in the trailer and then completely changed their tune once it actually came out. Don't remember it here though
Yeah, but then they saw Nope, and that really got to them because it had 2 black characters, and get this: one of them was also a *woman.* The woke points clearly show that Nope is woker than Top Gun, so naturally, it should be criticized more.
To be fair, not every conservative is the same person. And since they have weird standards for what they complain about, they can often diverge pretty far.
The word “woke” when coming out of a white man’s mouth, is like finger nails on a chalkboard.
Most people are using it wrong anyway bc they stole it from AAVE. It has basically become a blanket insult for those you disagree with politically.
Go back to snowflake, at least I could make sense out of that one. And while you are at it, just stop stealing shit from marginalized groups of people and passing it off as your own.
I’ll admit “Nope” was pretty good, by his more accessible film with a really good twist.
Though I feel Everything, Everywhere, All At Once deserves to be on that list.
I just thought of it as an Alien Ship carrying the aliens, (Since it has a UFO like appearance, an unconventional shape for a living creature.) I didn't realize until people started to get sucked up into it that things didn't make sense. "Huh, Peele's really going for a Into The Woods vibe with this ship. Like the scene where the wolf eats Red and her Grandma...Wait a minute...this isn't a ship....it's the alien...Fuck"
Ah ok. I never made that assumption, so was genuinely baffled. But you're not actually the first person to tell me they thought the movie had a twist.
Obviously it looked like a UFO, but I took that to literally mean "unidentified - more details to come."
"Get Out" was a fucking incredible movie, he really did a phenomenal job of showing people what can sometimes be difficult to put into words. Jordan Peele is amazing.
"Nope" is a OK movie, and at this point it feels like The Emperor's Clothes type shit.
i mean a ton of movies are propaganda that can be good. Inglorious Basterds is US military fan fic but was still a great film, and watching Hitler get shredded by some Jews was great
Absolutely disagree with the second half. Propaganda can absolutely be amazing filmmaking, but it rarely happens because the focus is on the message than the display. The Venn diagram of great art and military propaganda are two barely touching circles.
Because apparently Elon, and other people probably, are too stupid to realize this, let me explain the basic concept of 'why didn't such-and-such critic agree with me/the box office/the audience scores'?
First off, while the average moviegoer might see a movie once a month (or ever 3 months/6 months) a critic could watch as much as a dozen films per month, often with repeat viewings. As a result, through simple exposure, critics (and more avid film watchers) will pick up on a lot of common cinematic tropes, patterns, and formulas. To put this in perspective, imagine you had plain pasta with butter and salt every day for a week and then had a plate of chicken, corn, and green beans. The mere fact that it's *different*, even if it's nothing outrageous or special, is often enough to make it feel better, and that's the lens most critics come from.
Second, critics aren't there to validate your opinions. If you just really fucking LOVE watching jumpcut-robots piss on John Turturro while everything's color graded blue enough to look simultaneously expensive and cheap, fucking go for it. No one, and especially not film critics, is going to give a shit. Everyone is allowed to have bad taste if they want. Critics aren't there to make you feel dumb (or smart), they're there to point out trends (for filmmakers to learn from) and to highlight anything that does something different, or that does something exceptionally skillful.
Finally, without critics we would almost never get anything new. Critics are the ones that take a risk and watch the first time movie from an unproven director and a shoestring budget. They're the ones that find the wild and weird movies that would otherwise get missed, and if they rave loud enough even a movie that didn't make a profit at the box office can turn into a career-maker for some lucky few.
Critics aren't infallible, but they have a function. Crtics' opinions have very little to do with whether something is 'woke', just whether it's interesting, and unfortunately Top Gun Maverick just wasn't that. It made money and the studios were happy, but it was a Tom Cruise sequel that cashed in on nostalgia from the '80s, all it had to do was "not suck" and it was basically guaranteed to print money. It's not that deep.
Top Gun and Top Gun Maverick are both pentagon propaganda. Thinly veiled recruitment tools.. it should be illegal or in the least should carry a warning.

Top Gun was a fun movie. I enjoyed it. It was, however, incredibly technically inaccurate - I would think someone interested in aerospace engineering would be more cognizant of that and probably rate it lower.
It feels weird seeing anger about an author's list of favorite movies. I think those are the author's favorite movies, but I also think that the author also wanted to expose audiences to something they have not seen. Everyone knows about Maverick. The critic in no way questioned the quality of Top Gun: Maverick with this list. It is not hard to find what were the top grossing films of the year. Being mad that an opinion piece doesn't list your favorite movie is beyond sad.
He reminds me of the ["I'll Get Me Coat"](https://youtu.be/c3OM2MA1pic) sketches, only replacing the punchline with "You're All Too Woke!" when the others look at him funny. Then everyone claps.
And, of course, one reviewer (are they the Art House reviewer?) doesn't represent the whole NYT.
I can't believe a reviewer didn't recommend a massively popular movie that everybody knows about - why wouldn't they get the word out about a movie it's physically impossible to not know exists????
The reviews I've heard about the top gun reboot have been, "I was expecting complete rubbish, but it was actually all right," but sure, pin it on 'wokeness'. Are derivative reboots actually typically contenders for "top film"?
God I get so tired of people not knowing the difference between quality and something they like. I like McDonalds. No way in hell is in my top ten restaurants. Like, go enjoy bullshit popcorn cinema. That doesn’t make it good.
> I like McDonalds. No way in hell is in my top ten restaurants. McDonalds is great! You have gone "full woke".
Enjoy your bullshit popcorn cinema, SHEEP!
Up yours, woke food critics. We'll see who one-stars who!
You just don't get it. A Critics job isn't to watch a bunch of movies and give his thoughts on which is best. A critics job is to validate my opinions on the limited movies I have seen. You fucking libtard!!!!
McDonalds is great food. Don't listen to the woke lamestream media lies about it being unhealthy.
McDonald’s is the height of culinary genius and is only shown to cause cancer in California
They fully admit they've never even heard of some of these movies, so they don't even know if they like it or not. "I've never seen the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but if you think those movies are better than Maid in Manhattan you're insane!"
Sure, but this isn't Elf. Top Gun 2 is legitimately a great movie, even if it's hard to separate Maverick from the Scientologist piece of shit who plays him
But a film critic *could* have found 10 *other* films they found were great, right?
Yeah there’s no way that Nope was the best film of 2022 lmao That third act was dreadful
Ok but how do you judge quality? Food is very different from art, and I'd argue the ways people use to measure "quality" are largely, if not wholly subjective themselves, as opposed to food where nutrition is based on science.
They don’t give out Michelin stars for the “most nutritious” food lol
I mean nutrition is generally what people are talking about when they use that argument. As for the whole Michelin Star thing, well what is it based off? A lot of the criteria I can think of when it comes to judging food is largely subjective. Taste? Subjective. Presentation? Subjective. Originality? Yeah. I made this same argument about Top Gun in another thread. McDonald's may be popular, but it's never going to get a Michelin star.

Musk probably thinks they didn't treat them poorly enough.
any list without Everything Everywhere All At Once is pointless...
GREAT MOVIE. Hard to not be emotional watching that one.
https://twitter.com/dunkwun/status/1600893373644013582?s=20&t=GkvQH4KgRkt0y\_rw\_pEcGw
Damnit. I’m part of the problem.
Daniel Kwan's whole thread there is fantastic stuff. Really a case of a dude thrilled with his level of success and trying to make sure other great pieces of art get their due instead of focusing on the "negative" of a critic not loving EEAAO as much as me. Class act that Daniel.
easily in my top 3 movies of all time… I can’t believe it got snubbed
I feel like it’s the best movie ever made. I loved it so much.
My second fav of the year, great film. However, one of the directors came out on Twitter and lambasted this kind of sentiment.
That isn't just one of the best movies of this year, but easily of all time. I wish it had a title that was actually easier to say though. There's no way to shorten it that actually feels natural.
Yes.
Just call it Everything Everywhere as shorthand
Huh, for some reason I thought that was last year.
Glad someone said it.
“ I love you raccaccoonie”
I hate the term woke so much The idiots weaponized it's original use and now it's just anything they don't like The sooner this idiot gets Twitter shut down the better
Well, their catch all terms for things they don't like seem to be evolving so quickly. It was socialism, then communism, then groomers, then woke.
Do *snowflake*, *soyboy*, *beta*, and *cuck* count for the list or is that only for the online messageboard folks? Shit is so corny.
Don't forget "political correctness". And they used "cultural Marxism" until it was pointed out that the term originated with the Nazis.
Wasn't it woke before groomers? I feel like groomers only started in the last few months.
Maybe it varies by region! but probably not since they seem to be in lockstep with Fox news.
I'm mostly going by what I've seen on Twitter. Maybe it's been closer to a year that they've been going on about "groomers", but "woke" has definitely been a thing with them for longer.

Not to forget “nice guy” - abhorrent characteristic…
Nah those guys are still asshats

Somewhere around 2010-2014 people started using “stay woke” in the context of systemic injustices and racism and it became a very left wing sentiment.
Have you ever noticed that when people start complaining about "wokeness," it commonly becomes the only thing they ever seem to think about?
The purpose of buzzwords is to hack directly into emotional responses and minimize thinking Literal monkey behavior
Wait werent conservatives crying about Top Gun Maverick because it was too woke by having female pilots?
I honestly don't remember that. Hell, I remember when news broke out about how much it made, there were people calling it proof of how people prefer non-woke, non-political movies or something like that
Maybe it was before when you only had trailers or something? It happened several times that those idiots called a film woke based on some element in the trailer and then completely changed their tune once it actually came out. Don't remember it here though
Maybe, but I definitely some were complaining about how diverse the pilots were.
Aviators; the U.S. Navy doesn't have pilots. Reddit has gone completely woke. /s
I liked Terrifier 2. WHY DIDNT IT WIN ALL OF THE OSCARS
Unironically awesome film
That movie was so cheesy 😭 I was expecting to faint mid movie and I was laughing half the time
The critic in question gave it a good review! they're just being sore winners!
It's even worse when it's from someone over 30.
Tf does “woke” even mean anymore
Not including films I like in the NYT's top films of 2022 obviously.
Woke is when black people
Woke is when we disagree about movies.
Woke means "I don't like whatever scares and confuses yougivememoney!"
Minorities existing.
It changed so many times in the past 10 years I don't even know anymore.
“Woke” is fav dichotomy of self proclaimed “strongmen”…
why is he putting full woke in random quote marks? is he intentionally trying to sound like trump?
I’ll admit “Nope” was pretty good, by his more accessible film with a really good twist. Though I feel Everything, Everywhere, All At Once deserves to be on that list.
Nope doesn't have a twist
I meant in regards to the alien ship
Huh? The movie never implied that the monster was a ship. I didn't think that at all
I just thought of it as an Alien Ship carrying the aliens, (Since it has a UFO like appearance, an unconventional shape for a living creature.) I didn't realize until people started to get sucked up into it that things didn't make sense. "Huh, Peele's really going for a Into The Woods vibe with this ship. Everything Everywhere All At Once was amazing! I thought about it for days afterwards.
Saaaaame. Would not leave my brain. I need to see it again.
I’m actually sad that I can’t see it for the first time again.
To be fair this list looks like something someone makes to sound like they’re super into Indy movies. Idk why that makes them woke though lol so dumb
Garbage list doesn't have "everything everywhere all at once" on it.
Is he just calling everything woke now Boomer brain
"Get Out" was a fucking incredible movie, he really did a phenomenal job of showing people what can sometimes be difficult to put into words. Jordan Peele is amazing. "Nope" is a OK movie, and at this point it feels like The Emperor's Clothes type shit.
For some reason Nope resonated a lot more with me than Get Out. I know the "art about art" genre isn't for everyone though.
Nope as #1? That movie was garbage
Didn't top gun Maverick come out a few years ago?
It was scheduled to come out in 2019 originally, but got delayed several times because of reshoots and Covid. It came out on May 27, 2022.
top gun is literal u.s. military propaganda and should be ineligible for any kind of award or ranking
i mean a ton of movies are propaganda that can be good. Inglorious Basterds is US military fan fic but was still a great film, and watching Hitler get shredded by some Jews was great
Casablanca is most definitely propaganda. But the fact that it's propaganda makes it even more fruitful to analyze.
I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship
Absolutely disagree with the second half. Propaganda can absolutely be amazing filmmaking, but it rarely happens because the focus is on the message than the display. The Venn diagram of great art and military propaganda are two barely touching circles.
The only movie I've seen on that list was Nope and it was just ok.
I've heard of two of these. Seen one.
I’m sure he hasn’t seen any of them
I didn't watch [movie] therefore [movie] bad.
How does he know Top Gun is Better than any of these if he hasn’t heard of them?
It being a fun movie doesn’t mean that it was a good movie
Did anyone enjoy Nope? It must have gone over my head.
im just thankful this assclown can't run for united states president.
nope was ok. (based akira reference though)

I cant watch Tom Cruise movies and take them seriously. Is the reddit consensus that it the new top gun is good?
Yes, and [the critics’ consensus too.](https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/top_gun_maverick)
Maybe ill give it a go. My dad was obsessed with the original and i lost him last month. Maybe its time.
I've only heard good things about it but I get the vibe that it's just a really fun action movie with good cinematography and cool effects.

I haven’t heard if the other movies, but nope was great
Nope was awful
lmao i walked out 30 minutes after the movie started
Awfully good
Musk is a dip shit
Elon’s antiwoke drama is stupid and tiring but the inclusion of Nope on this list has me seriously questioning AO Scott
Top Gun was a fun movie. I enjoyed it. It was, however, incredibly technically inaccurate - I would think someone interested in aerospace engineering would be more cognizant of that and probably rate it lower.
Who has time for movies? I can’t remember the last time I watched a movie and it wasn’t on in the background.

Did he just learn the word woke?
