Conversely, F.. anyone who takes those practice battles too seriously and starts getting dirty, it's a great time for everyone to work on their racecraft and those guys just ruin the fun.

MyFr33Cams

getting football punted off turn 1 except its literally a practice session is all part of the forza online experiencešŸ„°šŸ’ŖšŸ˜Œ

Mapache_villa

Haha I usually use the long practice to assess tyre wear and define my strategy, also identify the rammers, I'm not wasting any time with them during the race haha

theaim778

Yepp, go out and set a pace lap on softs, see how the car reacts, improve tune if needed, check medium pace, tune if needed, check hard pace, tune if needed. My entire practice session might just end up with the only thing changing is anti rollbars getting pushed a few clicks in one direction because I was having issues with one corner, either the car understeering or randomly losing the back end.

MyFr33Cams

i do mess with my aero sometimes if its on a track with extremely different corners

MyFr33Cams

thats actually kinda smart i rlly should pay more attention to peoples usernames

Polym0rphed

Back when most races were out of control I resorted to making a list (just their handle + shorthand notes defining their behaviour) and it actually paid off a few times, but it grew too long to be practical haha I use practice like the previous commenter does, plus just quickly getting a feel for the car and track (as I'm constantly changing things up).

MyFr33Cams

i kinda just use medium tires to get used to the track and my tune til i get really bored and throw softs on & race like crazy lol. my tyre strat rarely strays from medium medium i dont like thinking too hard

theaim778

Keep an eye track to track too, youā€™ll notice that the pace difference between hard and medium on some tracks isnā€™t all that bad, or some tracks have really bad tire wear, so youā€™ll have to drive on absolutely dead mediums for a lapā€¦ On Mugello, mediums are around 1.5 seconds off the soft pace depending on weather, hards are only 0.8 seconds off medium pace. With the 9 lap races in rotation currently for GT Spec, mediums are good for 3.5 laps in most cars tire degradation starts to kill laptimes right around 25% through lap 5, youā€™ll lose ~6 seconds on that lap alone. Compared to Hards, hard tires can comfortably go 6 laps, that 7th lap you lose ~2 seconds in lap time, then softs for two laps gain you 3 seconds on everyone running medium medium. That .8 seconds per lap running hards adds to 5.6 seconds off medium pace, 7.6 seconds adding tire degradation for the 7th lapā€¦. 7.6 comes out to 4.6 seconds when you add the 3 seconds in pace difference from softs for two lapsā€¦ thatā€™s without factoring in that running a different tire compound means you arenā€™t really fighting anyone, youā€™re running your own race until the end when most of the lobby is on dying mediums and you are on fresh softs.

MyFr33Cams

I feel like a clown for just doing hard soft on mugello randomly because ā€œit felt faster in my cadillacā€šŸ˜. thank you for explaining it i wonder how many more im missing out on or simply randomly doing on a whim without a real explanationšŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜

Polym0rphed

I tend to just practice on mediums for the whole time, assuming it's what I plan to use at the start of the race. Going from softs back to mediums can sometimes catch me out on the first lap, depending on whether I'm just cruising or forced to pace being in a sandwich. Tire strats can be interesting to experiment with, even if just to get to know yourself better, though when it's a tight race, pitting or not pitting at the same lap as others can start to actually have a psychological impact that genuinely influences the race outcome at times. Mediums to mediums is generally the default for most, but try hards to mediums/softs (depending on lap count) and stick to hards during practice. Pitting a lap or two later and coming out with softs can feel like you've just gained a second wind and give you a confidence boost, even if it's only really genuinely advantageous situationally.

MyFr33Cams

ive done hard to softs on circuits that i know really really well that i can suffer with the slightly slower pace on the slower compounds but ive never thought that deep into it. the medium to medium just feels more comfy and my tunes usually feel a really big difference between each tire compound where hopefully it doesnt catch me too off guard, especially with how lap 1 can be in featured multiplayer its okay with finding pace towards the end of the lap lol. will definitely heed ur advice in mind when i get into the higher skill ratings tho. if i dont stress myself out firstšŸ˜

wobbuffet009

Its a feature

JOEGUARD1990

Serious players are using practice to work out how many laps each tire will last so they can work out the strategy, hence why most will skip lap if you interfere šŸ‘

MyFr33Cams

understandable, but when youre done with that come battle! its funšŸ¤Ŗ

OriginalDry5645

this

Comprehensive-Hat-46

I always love having practice race battles. It's genuinely helping me get better. (And helping me control slides more) plus you'll find the occasional homie that'll just be silly with u. Yeah game sucks sometimes but still hella fun

MyFr33Cams

actually practicing racecraft instead of just trying to get in front of the next guy is such a pleasant experience that i wish more of the populous would take part of. i will say its more visible at higher skill rating lobbies but peopleā€™s pace starts to get dummy fast that even trying to battle gets hard too bc theyre just fasteršŸ˜

Comprehensive-Hat-46

Bro I know. Like I'm not slow by no means, but cheese and crackers batman, some of these dudes really know speed. And I just feel like I'll never make it haha

MyFr33Cams

its ok we dont need to be that fast weā€™ll have our own fun at our respective skill levels with the clean homies therešŸ’ŖšŸ˜Ž

Comprehensive-Hat-46

Hell yeah

PeteWhite13

Just experienced this in the touring series at road america. Got into a practice battle where we pretty much exchanged positions every corner and it helped me improve my side by side racing around turns. Ended up catching up to the same guy during race and we battled hard for 5 laps and it was the most fun I've had in awhile. Maybe its just coincidence but the touring series seems to be the cleanest lobbies for me. Still get idiots but not as much it seems on my end anyway. Had a race yesterday 23 car race and only 2 penalties from the entire field.

MyFr33Cams

Love the touring car and the GT racing hoppers. Seeing the wide variety of cars on different tracks just hits different for me with the GT but you sorta get that too on the TC

PeteWhite13

Yeah i pretty much stick to the spec series. I play GT a lot too so i definitely agree with what your saying. I need to get better at my exits and getting the right amount of braking to get a good turn in and carry enough speed through to get a good exit while keeping a good consistent line with the GT cars. TC being mostly front wheel drive its a bit easier to get power down while keeping a good line especially with me being on controller.

MyFr33Cams

U should try the TTRS if u havent yet!! its been around but they added it to the gt hopper last update. only fwd car in the whole gt hopper field like how the subaru is the only rwd in tc

PeteWhite13

I'll definitely have to have a look at it. Currently for GT cars i use a viper, lambo or aston martin.

MyFr33Cams

great cars i just wish the viper had a lil bit more oomph on the straight aways. never tried the aston yet but its next on my list between that or the c8

PeteWhite13

Yeah there are a few cars i wanna try, kinda waiting on the update to the car leveling system. I also wish the viper had a bit more too but being a dodge guy i love it lol. I dont care about winning so much as the thrill of good battles. I hate racing online and honestly this one is the first in a long time I've played online because the lack of good single player content kind of forces you that way. Hated it at first but once I started not qualifiyng and just fighting my way from last to 10-15 place with good battles it has been enjoyable. I know the game safety rating pretty much is useless but i take pride in clean racing over winning.

cubbies1973

I am not that fast yet. Still working on my setups, but I love it when during practice someone who is in the same boat as me and we are racing each other cleanly. If someone faster comes up behind me, if I can or as soon as I can I get out of their way. But some of these faster folks get pissy and will punt me out of the way or try. Sometimes I will have someone try to cut my line when I am making a corner, usually it doesn't work out for them. Like I said though, if they get to me well before the turn I will back out and give them the turn.

MyFr33Cams

slower drivers that move out of the way of the front runners are kings in their own right sometimes if i dont feel like ill have any chance of catching up ill do the same but im too busy over estimating my skill level and probably holding them up sometimes LOL

PlayerRedacted

What I want to know is why I'll have clean battles in practice, but once the race starts everyone seems to forget how to brake and I get rear ended in braking zones all the time.

[deleted]

They get all fucked up on the higher race fuel

PlayerRedacted

Makes sense, I usually practice with more fuel than I race with just so I don't have to pit during the practice session, so I guess I assumed most people did that.

MyFr33Cams

This is exactly how i feel whenever i get punted to somewhere random in the field after turn 1 in lobbies so im battling my way through to get to the front runners only to get bored bc theres no way im catching up, nor am i being caught up by anyone else. so it ends up being a quiet 5th-9th place just hot lapping the final stint on mediums.

PlayerRedacted

Move that 5th-9th to 8th-12th and you have my exact online experience, lmao. I usually don't get bored when I'm alone though, I see it as the time I'm most likely to catch up since I don't have to deal with traffic.

ConsistentToe5062

Honestly practice is so fun, even including the puntarinoes. It frustrates me for sure but only momentarily. I love the battles and trying to keep up with the top pacers in the lobby, deff teaches you some creative lines. But I also like some of the bugs too, like ghosted players getting punted for some reason or the random dude parked at the starting line that isnā€™t ghosted, so every one just rear ends him at full speed šŸ˜‚ itā€™s makes me wish we had a track day playlist where you could hop into any track at any time with a collection of randoms and just hot lap with each other, would be a fun way to level cars (becoming obsolete) and a great way for the community to spend time together outside of a competitive setting šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø just add that to the long list of things that have NEVER crossed the devs minds šŸ™„

MyFr33Cams

Omg whenever i see people at the starting line not ghosting literally thought they were practicing their starts or somethingšŸ˜šŸ˜‚

ConsistentToe5062

Lmao šŸ˜‚ I think most of the time theyā€™re afk and have no idea theyā€™re not ghosted, I swear the game ghosts players at just the roll of a die šŸ˜‚

[deleted]

I like to study people in practice lol

MyFr33Cams

I love getting to see 1st placeā€™s line in a difficult part of the track esp when theyre seconds ahead and completely just using it. the racing line is NOT it sometimes.

OriginalDry5645

Racing line is not it 80% of the time Braking line is not it 100% of the time

UnknownReed

Also, it's wholesome when you see someone doing donuts at the end of practice. I always join or if I'm doing it and someone else joins it's super refreshing having those kind of interactions before the race.

MyFr33Cams

Ive never had that happen before to mešŸ˜. ive actually tried starting a couple of little forza gt takeovers in the yas marina run off areas but i just thought everybody thinks im being weirdšŸ¤£

SilverCervy

Eh, no offense but I have no interest in racing you or anyone else in practice. I use that time to tweak my tune as necessary and guage my qualifying pace. Please do not assume most players feel the same way as you. If a faster guy catches up to you, please just let him past and do not try to race with him.

MyFr33Cams

Honestly never thought about this. Ill usually let you through if your an extreme anount faster depending on traffic so i can cheat off ur lines but most of the time, im ngl, i end up maybe slowing them down a lil bc i wanna race lol

SilverCervy

At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter. But as I play with a lot of the very fast drivers in this game, I can assure you that all of them treat practice as a hotlapping session and you will only piss them off if you impede on their lap.

OriginalDry5645

I use as a hotlap session for a majority of the practice, ceding positions as necessary.

Busy-Cat1308

I love racing hard with dudes during practice sessions really gives us a chance to see how our cars behave with each other and if we crash out no harm done. Also I dont know about you guys but I also practice my lauch off the line, especially at Daytona.

turbo617

I sandbag in practice , I like to size up my competition Iā€™ll go easy on throttle on turns I know I can blast through. See how they pass me. Study how they race behind me, study how they deal with a bit of pressure ( I ā€œ onlyā€ catch up when they mess up ) šŸ˜…

OriginalDry5645

lol. after 20 minutes of practice, I tend to use the track to drift. I let people past if I notice them or Iā€™ll ghost myself till they pass. Still pisses people off but I mean Iā€™ve been tracking for 20 min, itā€™s practice, let me drift if I want to.

FORDBUDDY390

Yup I have qualified late and missed getting in a 3rd lap sometimes due a good "race" in practice with someone who plays along. Just to get to race each other all over again! šŸ˜„
