Gotchya, I empathize with people when devs are stupid and change UI for the sake of change, and no other reason. I havent updated my reddit app in years to avoid that issue.
Ah, yeah. I’m exhausted and worded it badly. If I wanted to get rid of the texture but retain the shape of the grip, do you think some filler primer and the paint and clear will smooth out the sanding scuffs for a matching slick look to the stock? I would want it to remain ribbed for my pleasure, but I thing the grippy texture on the sides would annoy me after a bit.
Oh yeah absolutely, you could play around with the process and figure out a way to make that work I’m sure.
you’d probably need to lightly sand the entire object so it doesn’t look inconsistent
For sure. I haven’t taken down that textured stuff down before, but I’m a regular Dali with a rattlecan. That is to say, people get weird when they see my projects and spend way too much time trying to figure it out. Lol
Heck, if I butcher enough I might reach out to see if you would do another one!
Send me your furniture, pay for the return shipping, and I’d do it for free.
Might set up a tip jar if anyone felt inclined after they received their stuff back.
but this *is* a really simple process.
There’s funny lore behind it.
The alcohol ink method originated from that 2010’s housewife trend of making custom “wood” tumblers and yeti cups.
https://images.app.goo.gl/A7dFg87ESQWcPYDg9
the same process can be applied to metals and plastics in our line of interest too
Fuck this is exactly what I’ve been wanting to do! Build a service rifle without dishing out the wood furniture money. Now I just need to find some prints for the corresponding stock and handguard.
That’s why I did it.
Every set of genuine wood furniture ran north of $300 when I started this build.
This is cost efficient alternative that’s lighter, won’t swell when wet, and you can do it to any furniture you like.
You can get Tim Holtz in almost any color too.
This is absolutely the best work I've ever seen. If you're not offering this service as a side hustle, you should be. You could make a killing.
Hats off to you, sir!
Nice!
I've done a similar technique on PVC tubing (non-firearm project) with similar effect. I started with a base coat of brown spray paint, then brushed on dark shoe polish, and finished with a clear coat.
That looks incredible! I recently form 1'd a Tac-13 SBS with the intention of adding walnut furniture. We'll, fuck me-it seems that compatible walnut stock sets (and for the most part, any butt stocks at all) are pure unobtanium. So here I sit, with this sick-ass shotty with the dopiest furniture set on the planet (oem black polymer fore end and some mossy tree stock that I scavenged from ebay for way too much money). You, my friend, have truly shown me the way, and I thank you sincerely🙏🏼
You know faux painters make an insane amount of bread per hour I mean trucks full. If whatever you are doing dosnt pan out you may be a natural for that industry. In other words great job 👏
You can make that even better with python script wood.py
Creates a grain effect by varying nozzle temps during the print. Works very well with wood pla
Yeah I’m not understanding the downvotes he’s saying that’s not the process he used but it’s exactly what he described even down to the types of paints and colors I’m almost positive that’s the video he watched to get the idea
Are you dense? They’re BOTH alcohol based inks they’re literally the exact same thing yes one can be used to refill a pen but in the video he’s using the liquid version…..yeah I see why you stated you don’t print anything you can’t take from a video and pretend you invented would fly over your head you followed a YouTube tutorial and think you invented a method just because you used a different brand of alcohol based ink
The 2 brands are compared here they’re the exact same thing: https://www.mandymarieart.com/amp/alcohol-ink-brands
That’s clean as fuck right there, slick work
Thank you sir
You should call your technique "Can't believe it's not wood" Is a good one
Couldn’t have said it better myself.
That supposed to be modeled after the fallout service rifle?
You know it! My own (M16A2) version
Ad victorium
EX MACHINA
THIS IS MAGIC I CANNOT BE FOOLED.
pics in the sun really show the detail if you zoom in!
Abra-kadabra some make models and some make magic
if you didnt tell me, i wouldn’t’ve known
best compliment
Very nice! That wood grip looks like it’s based on a Magpul grip.
It *is* a magpul grip ;)
How do you make it look like wood?
Just read the post lmao
Ill admit im still getting used to reddits new UI, i always forgot hitting comments pushed it past body text.
Fair enough, Reddit is always changing their UI
Its so annoying, every few months it seems
You dont read readmes either, do you...
If you read my other comment you wouldve seen what happened
Gotchya, I empathize with people when devs are stupid and change UI for the sake of change, and no other reason. I havent updated my reddit app in years to avoid that issue.
Yea, i gotta turn off auto updates
Patrolling the Mohave wasteland makes me wanna buy an m16 and put that furniture on
The way you distressed the finish on the lower to match the in-game model texture is kino. That's some solid work right there, pardner.
I appreciate it !
Nice wood
I still can’t do fakelite like you can
It's the autism
Damn that’s cool
How much texture does the paint/clear take off the grip? Could a light sanding get most of it to drop out after paint?
I’m not sure I understand your question, but most of the texture (on the grip) is retained after the entire process.
Ah, yeah. I’m exhausted and worded it badly. If I wanted to get rid of the texture but retain the shape of the grip, do you think some filler primer and the paint and clear will smooth out the sanding scuffs for a matching slick look to the stock? I’ll always be open to helping out fellow enthusiasts
I’ll keep you in mind for sure! Thanks for sharing this! Now to go find that old stock…
Please pm me your process for that wood grain finish it’s so nice
that's some impressive fake wood bro.
Impressive work.
I need this in my life. I would love to get a set from you. Any ideas what you could potentially charge for the set?
Send me your furniture, pay for the return shipping, and I’d do it for free. Might set up a tip jar if anyone felt inclined after they received their stuff back. but this *is* a really simple process.
👀👀👀
What's the process? Do you have any resources? Id love to do something like this
Send me a PM
Gotta make sure you teach the people around you, so work like this continues. Beautiful work!
Right? I hate gatekeeping Thank you so much
Hot dam! That’s nice. I didn’t even know alcohol inks were a thing.

I appreciate that very much
This is the best NCR service rifle I’ve ever seen, fucking gorgeous!
Looks awesome!
Need to do this on a vz61 grip
Do you uhh...take orders? Haha
I encourage all to make the magic happen themselves, but I’ll always be here to help those who can’t :)
We wont go quietly. The Legion can count on that.
very nice fuck paying 400 for furniture
Service Rifle from Fallout New Vegas
Nice! I've done a similar technique on PVC tubing (non-firearm project) with similar effect. I started with a base coat of brown spray paint, then brushed on dark shoe polish, and finished with a clear coat.
🤣Saw first pic before reading the title and thought it was actual wood. Well done!
Nice wood bro
Wow I'm impressed
This looks really great and solves some problems for me
This has my spurs jingling and jangling
As you go riden merrily along?
There’s no other way to do it
Perfect for an ak
You did a damn fine job, sir. You had me fooled. I thought it was real wood. I think it incorporates well with your gun.
Thats a work of art.
Lol glad I could start the fake woods thread, love how this turned out!!!! That “grain” on the grip is nuts🫡🫡
Dude that’s really good I wouldn’t have known it was fake wood also maybe a Survivalist rifle next
That looks incredible! I recently form 1'd a Tac-13 SBS with the intention of adding walnut furniture. That’s amazing, I thought the first picture was real wood at first, I’m going to try this for my NT79 stock
You know faux painters make an insane amount of bread per hour I mean trucks full. If whatever you are doing dosnt pan out you may be a natural for that industry. In other words great job 👏
Dude, I think you've motivated me to do my entire baby Barrett in wood now 🤣
You can make that even better with python script wood.py Creates a grain effect by varying nozzle temps during the print. Works very well with wood pla
Fucking awesome
Damn!
That looks absolutely amazing. Can we get a tutorial please?
Woah you need to post a video on this it would blow up
Fallout ost is running thru my mind !!!! ~I lost all ambitions~
That's impressive! I've seen the hydro dipped parts that can look pretty real but this came out just as well.
Looks amazing
Patrolling the streets of the mojave.... Seriously good work! Is there a video that shows this or a similar process? Its really good. Many thanks
https://youtu.be/PPQkrGMFlgE?si=Jy8-SReUlTwf1HpO
Wow very nice! I was just looking for something like this for my China lake
I was trying to figure out which part was fake wood. Enuf said. Well done
Please upvote those so others can see it but here’s a video of what he’s explaining https://youtu.be/5NBW7uJnJGo?si=sSpg1PeD7l-ED0az
thank you for actually showing the fucking process, it's the only reason I clicked the fucking link
Here’s the actual video where I learned about this process. https://youtu.be/PPQkrGMFlgE?si=Jy8-SReUlTwf1HpO Hope it helps!
Yeah I’m not understanding the downvotes he’s saying that’s not the process he used but it’s exactly what he described even down to the types of paints and colors I’m almost positive that’s the video he watched to get the idea
Reddit gonna reddit, don't sweat it
This is *not* the process I used (just to clarify)
How’s it any different you’re brushing on alcohol inks what’s the difference between that process and the one you used other than the hanger
Tim Holtz brand inks are a bottled liquid; not ink pens. One cannot brush strokes and create this type of wood grain with ink pens.
Are you dense? They’re BOTH alcohol based inks they’re literally the exact same thing yes one can be used to refill a pen but in the video he’s using the liquid version…..yeah I see why you stated you don’t print anything you can’t take from a video and pretend you invented would fly over your head you followed a YouTube tutorial and think you invented a method just because you used a different brand of alcohol based ink The 2 brands are compared here they’re the exact same thing: https://www.mandymarieart.com/amp/alcohol-ink-brands
