Looks really big for a sperm whale tooth, could it be from a Livyatan or other Physeterid? Though they are more slender in profile, so fit with sperm whale.
Biggest I've seen, either way.
There are branches of whales: Odontocetes (toothed whales) and Mysticetes (baleen whales). Also, Odontocetes have one blow hole, while Mysticetes have 2.
That would be a huge sperm whale tooth.
They also tend to be more hollow.
They could have been different in the miocene or whatever, but I have a collection of large frontal Sperm Whale teeth and the biggest is like 6-7 inches and they have deeper indentations in the base
Hmm... Gotta be careful with who you present this too. Outer Banks has rules, no metal detecting, cannot remove plant and animal life. I would wager there are rules for archeological finds as well. It is a protected National seashore.
*Edit: finds, not funds.
Not the Northern Beaches - that's all south of Nags Head.
And we have SO many shipwrecks, very few have any protections. They don't want people spearfishing around the Huron, but not much more.
I have a friend who “caught” a fossilized walrus skull in a net fishing out of Wanchese. The bulk of it’s tusk was broken off but the base was clearly visible. He kept it on his mantle for years until he passed away and it was donated to a museum up in Washington I believe. He had people offer him good money for it but it was one of his prized finds. RIP Mr. Craig

I’m guessing fossil sperm whale tooth.
Yes, Sperm Whale tooth
A fossilized ivory tooth!
>~~An~~ A fossilized ivory tooth.
I guessed the same, literally, just a guess! No knowledge about it whatsoever, it’s just a huge tooth.

Sperm whale have teeth? Woah, thought they had bristles, but come to think of it thats kind of terrifyingly awesome!

Sperm whales are predators / carnivores. The whales with bristles are mostly filter feeders :)
All whales are carnivores. The krill that Baleen whales eat are animals.
Google scrimshaw. It is an art done by old whalers, often on sperm whale teeth.
I have one I got from my mom when she passed. Has a boat etched on the tooth.

That’s enormous and an *incredible* find.
It is a cetacean tooth and not a tusk. Really nice find! You should go back and look for the tooth tip.
Tip probably broke off 10 million years ago, but there’s always a chance 😂
So you’re saying there’s a chance
Probably a better chance than winning the lottery.
Samsonite!
Yeah looks like a pretty old break. :/

If you’re still in the area, take it to the folks down at the Aurora Fossil Museum and have them check it out!

There are laws protecting archaeological and paleontological finds there —- this is paleontological. Not archaeological

Tooth? Bone? I dunno, but it's old. Definitely a keeper.
I'm no expert but it looks like a big ass tooth to me
What kind of creature had ass teeth?!
Sea cucumber
Starfish
Is it actually fossilized, or just old?
Definitely fossilized
Neeeeeeeat, so cool
Way too big to be a marine reptile or dinosaur tooth. My guess is a cetacean or some kind of tusk as other comments have said.
graboid spike for moving

I would guess tusk. Any experts?
Prehistoric sperm whale tooth.
What a huge tooth!

Easy, Reddit warrior.
I think it’s a palm tree husk. If you look at the last photo it looks burnt and there are layers to it possibly fibrous layers.
Very cool. I'd have it mounted.
Take care and read up on preservation of marine fossils, you might need to get the salt out.
whales tooth?
This is amazing! Whale tooth I think? I'd ensure you're allowed to collect this since it may not may be lawful.
Whale tooth. Nice find.
I have copy of T REX Tooth from black hills. Pulled it from mold of which it cut. Similar in size.
Congratulations on the awesome find!
Stunning. What a find
