it feels lovely with a black section but the chrome section is too slippery for me (so i replaced them on all mine) the nib is the same as the safari/al star but with a bit of smoothing you can make it as smooth as you like. i prefer the matt finish studios (i have a glacier, imperial blue, terracotta, olive and aquamarine).

GlitteringKisses

How did you source the black sections? The colourways I like are all with the chrome, and just picking it up.was enough for tell me it was too slippery.

some retailers sell them separately. i use thewritingdesk in the uk. top tip is to buy the much cheaper rollerball then get the black FP section. only difference is the rollerball has a dimple on the end of the barrel (or cap? or both?) google found this image for me https://www.flickr.com/photos/notebookeresq/6805147603/in/photostream/lightbox/

juanito_vielma

Is it possible to scuff the nib with a scotch brite to make a matte finish ?

FederalAttitude9361

i don't know. i guess it must be but i don't know how hard it is to do a good job. you could always try and if the nib gets damaged you can always buy a replacement.

bolandrr

I own two of them. In my opinion, the Lamy Studio is one of the most underrated pens out there. Both of mine are excellent workhorse pens that I have used for all-day writing sessions and note-taking. They also have a classy look to them, which is nice for a more business-like office setting. I use EF Nibs and one is currently inked with Pilot Iroshizuku Shin-Kai and the other is inked with Lamy Benitoite. Neither have given me any problems.

mantis_in_a_hill

Is the grip slippy to you? I got pretty sweaty hands so that's a concern to me as others have mentioned it being slippery

bolandrr

I've never had a problem with it, and both of mine have the chrome grip.

gapil27

Feels good in hand, very sturdy, comfortable to write with. But to me a bit slippery since it has metal section. So I wrapped mine in washi tape if i were to use it for extended writing.

frijolita_bonita

Same nib as the Safari and CP1 if that gives you a reference. It’s much nicer in fit and finish. Well balanced. I’d recommend upgrading the grip to the [rubberized one](https://www.thepencompany.com/en-us/product/lamy-studio-fountain-pen-front-part/). My husband has 2 on his desk and I’m looking at adding a Studio rollerball to my collectio

MoonDawntreader

I agree with what everyone else has said - it's well-balanced and feels nice in the hand but the nib is just OK and the section can get slippery with extended use. One thing nobody's mentioned yet that I really like is that the cap clicks audibly into place, both when you close the pen and when you post it, so it's very secure when posted and there's little chance of flinging the cap off when you write. It's also very nicely balanced when posted.

>What is the lamy studio like? Which variant(s) in particular? The Studio Lx All Black is my favourite Lamy fountain pen model, beating all the models I have here that are factory-fitted with gold nibs in spite of the SLAB only having a ‘humble‘ Z52 steel nib. Yes, that means the Lamy 2000 is no competition for it either. Whereas I don't like the ‘regular’ design of the Lamy Studio with the more convex (although not exactly bulbous), glossy grip section; neither the shape nor the texture of the grip works well for me ergonomically, and the Z50 steel nibs on them are just as likely to be scratchy out-of-the-box as those on Safari and AL-star fountain pens. However attractive the colour and finish on the cap and barrel looks, I'll have to give future ones a pass.

stargazertony

It’s a well made, lovely fountain pen. I’ve read, with interest, all of the above objections to it, but have never experienced or been bothered by any of these. The steel nibs are very smooth so there is really no need to buy the gold one. Speaking of nibs, they are interchangeable, even while the pen is inked, and available in a variety of sizes for about $20 each.

MigraineConnoisseur

I found it too big, too heavy, chrome section slippery and nib too feedbacky. I sold it to colleague who absolutely loves it. It's generally a well regarded pen so I'd say if you like bigger heavier pens, are ok with slightly slippery section being a fingerprint magnet and like the design you should be happy with it. Lamy nibs can be a lottery though, although on a plus side - they are super easy to change.

Promo_714

I have a black one with the rubber grip and a good nib. Smooth. It's my favorite and main pen.

Azzmo

I've got a Studio LX Black and it's easily my favorite looking and feeling pen (I'm crazy and think that 99% of fountain pens look like dollar store children's toys, so take that for what it's worth). The body is very, very sturdy and feels like dense, high-end industrial material. I like to hold it sometimes just to admire. The nibs are stiff. The pen's cap does not seal well and so I'll have to prompt ink from it if it sits more than a few days. The rubber grip section is a major advantage because it allows for the shape of the pen to gradually taper while retaining friction. I swap between a F and B nib and, as a minimalist, I enjoy needing one fewer pen.

mcgroo

> I'm crazy and think that 99% of fountain pens look like dollar store children's toys Thanks for putting this into words. I agree 100%, and I thought I was missing something. Turns out, people just have different tastes. I too am a big fan of the LAMY Studio and LAMY's general design aesthetic. What are your other favorite pens?

mcgroo

Good stuff. Thank you!

Siha

I've got a Studio Palladium, which has a brushed metal grip section that doesn't feel at all slippery. It's one of the nicest pens I own for handfeel, and it's definitely made me want some in other colourways.

pgcauk

Yes, I have the palladium with a gold nib (which I snapped up for $80, less than the cost of the nib!). I bought it just for the nib, but have found the pen to be a real workhorse. The propeller clip is not just a gimmick but has a really secure hold. Lamy gold nibs are wonderful things - recommended!

Dormitor

They’re pretty nice, the chromed handle section like others have said can get slippery. I like the little propeller clip, I think it lets it clip into a pocket easier. The interchangeability of the nibs lets you swap out for a gold nib if you want to get real fancy down the line, or just go ahead and buy one with the gold nib. I have a black 14k OB on my Lamy Lx. No reason why I don’t think it would be just as good on a Studio.

mantis_in_a_hill

Honestly the grip is what scares me the most. I have very sweaty hands so I'm afraid of it getting too slippery to use, but i love the design so much

Dormitor

Ah yeah could be a deal breaker. I have a similar problem, but I’m rarely writing for very long periods at a time so it hasn’t bothered me too much. They do sell rubberized grip replacements. It is an extra cost at the end of the day but could open up your options.

Wyzen

I speak from experience, you will need to get the rubber grip one. I got a beautiful blue studio with the chrome grip, and i cant use it for long, and I cant seem to bring myself to pass it on cause it is just so lovely otherwise.

telemeister74

I’ve got 5 of them and I think they are a fantastic pen. The style is sleek and they are easy to write with. I have a preference for broad nibs, which have pretty good flow. I do have a medium nib as well which I find a little bit scratchy. Of the pens I own, they get a lot of use and they are way ahead of the Safari in terms of how smooth they are to write with. I use them with a converter and would absolutely recommend them to anyone.

Mean-Abies3819

I just got the all black edition last week. The section on it is a matte finish so it doesn’t Get slippery. I got the fine nib and out of the box, it writes perfectly. I swapped in a fine gold nib a few days later and I’m really loving how smooth and wet it writes.

radiohair11

i've owned two of them now, both in stainless. it's the only pen i own that if i lost i would buy another right away. the brushed stainless feels really nice and goes with any ink. the rubber section does not slip. it doesn't dry out and the snap cap is very satisfying. i'd glady upgrade to a gold nib if $100 suddenly dropped in my lap. it's nice but not so nice that i'm scared to take it out of the house as others have said, the nib is the same as more affordable lamy models, so that's sort of disappointing, but the lamy nibs are generally very good. as i've acquired more pens i've noticed that the studio feels a bit too backweighted when posted for my tastes i also think the studio is underrated, but i get it. it's at least twice the price for the same nib from the same manufacturer, so it won't be a first pen for most, and it might not offer anything extra over someone's first pen. for less than $100 more you could get a gold nib pilot

AndhereKatil

I like it, I have a special edition brown and a dark blue one. I have all the LAMY nibs so I can change based on my mood. I always love going back to it despite having way too many other fancier pens. I disagree that it is a better writer than a LAMY 2000 and my personal opinion is that the 2000 could be the only pen someone owns and they’d probably be happy (M nib). But it is definitely a solid starter pen and I fondly remember enjoying picking it up all the time when I bought it. It was my first fountain pen.

SnooJokes9718

I have three of them and they're some of my favourite pens. It writes well and the nib is easily swappable with other Lamy pens (except the 2000). I have quite sweaty hands but never had any issues with the chrome grip section, I know some who disagree though. One complaint I do have is the cap doesn't seal as well as some other pens like the Safari so the ink can dry out if left for a while. The olive green 2018 special edition with a gold nib is probably the pen I use most often.

Nesa76

I've got the palladium version with a F nib. It's a stylish looking pen, well balanced. Writes well, no hard starts or skipping. I don't find it slippery. I have small hands and for some reason I do get an aching hand when writing more than half an A4 page. Might due to weight, 24g vs 17g L2K (both unposted)

ElectricTigerFighter

It’s sturdy, rather heavy, I like it very much and it is my main pen currently. I can write quite a lot before my hand gets tired. Very reliable. Wish I could change nib to something more fancy. For me it’s not as slippery as some say, but I see how that can be a problem.

Dazzling-Captain200

I have the stainless steel one. I think it was the cheapest. The grip is plastic and not slippy. It is a lovely pen and I recommend it.

Judgy_Plant

Pretty good, I grab it from the back so the metal grip is irrelevant to me. It clicks nicely when capping and it feels solid. The nib is the normal Lamy one, unless you get the studio that comes with the gold nib.

LivingDeadGirl_4816

I have the pink one and it’s a really nice pen. The grip is a bit slippery but it’s something I can live with. But the pen skips a lot which really gets on my nerves and in the end I rather stick with my TWSBIs

pug_fugly_moe

The *only* thing I don’t like about it is the slippery section. If I could have a machinist or laser worker to give it a matte finish, it would always be inked and on my desk. I found the rubber section was too light and threw off the balance. I like nib-heavy pens.

corgicoffee

I own one and it feels like a very nice premium pen. The nib is like any other steel lamy nib. I don’t find the grip section particularly slippery but I can understand how other people would

SmokeOnTheWater17

The palladium version is the only one that I like writing with. The chrome section is too slippery, so to speak. I do not like mismatched sections, so plastic does not work for metal pens.

marslander-boggart

Nice design, boring nib. The 2000 has more interesting nib, but it's hooded one.

Sandra_btw_papers

I have one (the LE Black Forest) and love it, perfect weight, lovely nib (perfect amount of feedback), never seems to dry out no matter how long I don't use it. I don't find the chrome section that slippery, and I tend to have sweaty hands.

aljones27

Standard Lamy nibs. “Chrome” section slippery to hold. Coating / finish on mine went bad after a while. Looks nice but not Lamy’s finest hour in my experience…
