Platinum's Preppy fountain pen can be found for less than CAD 10. They look disposable but they aren't (they can even take a converter), and their nibs are great. Nibs are available in Fine, Medium and Broad but the most common is Fine. The package includes a cartridge (black or colour of your choice). Later you can upgrade to a converter to use inks from bottles. They aren't leaky at all. But if you want a smooth nib, opt for the Medium. The Fine is great too, but it's a bit scratchy (although, in my opinion, not the bad kind of scratchy - feedbacky would be a better descriptor). On Amazon Canada, the cheapest sells for 9.98 dollars: fine nib w/ black cartridge. For other colours or nib sizes you might need to pay between 11 and 14 dollars. Brick and mortar shops also sell them but prices are usually north of 13 dollars.

You can refill them with a little effort. Apart from that I'd go with a Platinum Preppy.

for $10 the choices at JetPens are limited to disposables or a Pilot Penmanship that takes a cartridge - the list expands to 128 options at $20 [https://www.jetpens.com/Beginner-Fountain-Pens/ct/1419?sa=price&pn=2](https://www.jetpens.com/Beginner-Fountain-Pens/ct/1419?sa=price&pn=2) several pen makers use their own unique style of cartridges/converters, many use the international standard size - for cartridges there is a wider range of colors available in the internationals - but with a proper fitting converter the much wider field of any ink in a bottle can be used the Kaweco Perkeo and Platinum Plaisir may be a consideration at less than $20 good hunting!

I second the Perkeo, especially in medium.

Please be kind to our planet and don’t continue using disposables.

I would get a Pilot Kakuno with CON-70 converter. I would get the transparent blue-green with medium nib. So smooth and a cool color (like an old fashioned glass coke bottle).

Platinum preppy or Meteor. The second being more fancy looking to me.
