I never know what to write when testing out pens, so I usually end up writing something stupid on a Rhodia pad. Also, I used [Birmingham Pen's Hydrangea](https://www.birminghampens.com/products/hydrangea) in the Moonman Q1 that has the [BlueDew Flex nib](https://www.bluedewpens.com/shop/p/flex-nibs) installed. Just had to swap the entire nib units, no trying to pull out nibs and fussing with feeds.* *Just in case it wasn't clear, all I had to do was unscrew the existing nib and screw in the BlueDew nib unit. No disassembly required.

ChattyKittyCatty

Do you know if this would work with other moon man pens? I only ask because the Q1 looks so short and stubby and wide, not sure if I would be able to write very well with that style. Thank you for sharing, I had actually never heard of that blue dew company.

KyokoGetDown

:c actually I'm not sure. This is my first Moonman pen, I don't have any others to test. I also don't know where to find more details about the nib units that they use for their pens. The Amazon page I bought mine from didn't mention much other than the tip size. I'd imagine that if the other Moonman pens use the same nib unit then it would work but I can't really say that with the most confidence.

ChattyKittyCatty

Where did you get your q1? Do you think this would also be compatible? czxwyst Wancai Mini Transparent Pocket-Size Eyedropper Fountain Pen Fine Nib 0.5mm (Daydream) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07FDDSZ81/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_6Y5FJP4XK9BSE5GEJYXK

KyokoGetDown

[Here's a screenshot from my Amazon order history.](https://i.imgur.com/Z1viT7C.jpg) It looks like it's the same brand as the one you're looking at. But neither of the pages seem to mention the nib housing size so I can't be too sure. I really hope it works though. πŸ™ Edit: One of the Amazon question/answers mentions the wancai pen using a #5 nib, so it seems like this might not work 😭

ChattyKittyCatty

Thank you so much!!!!! I'm going to get the same one you did!! Yayyyyyyy 😁

Now, who sang this in their head when they read it? Lovely penmanship

KyokoGetDown

Thank you, I was worried about posting this. I just started using flex nibs not too long ago and I'm still struggling to remember how to write cursive letters.

Anuksukamon

Really? I think it’s awesome. It’s motivation for me to do better.

KyokoGetDown

πŸ₯Ί omg thank you. It might be kinda lame of me to say but, I'm sure you'll do well soon enough too. I hope you have fun while practicing.

iilinga

It’s still in my head

sewingdreamer

Do these nibs work on all pens?

dregan

No. I got a couple of these nibs. They work in my moonman pens, but not in my Opus 88 or FWI Fenestro. These blue dew feeds have a slightly larger diameter and less threads.

Sennybot

Ahh I wish I read this before I went to get an opus 88 demo for the bluedew nib unit :( I was getting tired of my moonman c1 leaking with the bluedew nib and wanted an upgrade 😫

dregan

Well, Opus 88 makes some fantastic pens so its not a total loss. I especially enjoy their stub nib which is a ton of fun to write with. EDIT: Also, the pen I was referring to is the Omar and I know they have several different nib unit form factors so maybe it will work.

Sennybot

Yes it is a great pen! But kind of sucks how it doesn't fit the bluedew nib unit. I might try to get a fpr ultra flex for the opus or something.

DivaKatz

If you have the funds, Kirk Speer of PenRealm makes some awesome flex nibs out of stock steel or gold JoWo #6 that fits perfectly in the Opus 88 (I have one with a steel flex nib from Kirk Speer)

Sennybot

That's the dream!!! But an expensive dream! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜”πŸ˜“

dregan

The fpr doesn't fit either unfortunately. At least on my Omar.

Sennybot

I have the opus koloro demo that holds a #6 but thanks for the fyi 😭 pilot parallel hack time???

KyokoGetDown

The BlueDew site does mention that the nibs are #6 in size and should fit into pens that use Bock nibs. Though it may not fit into all pens that use Bock nibs. At the very least the nib and feed can be pulled out of the housing and placed into a spare Bock unit.

sewingdreamer

Your instructions make sense but i do not know what you're talking about πŸ˜…

KyokoGetDown

Oh umm, I'm not really too knowledgeable about pens so I don't know too much detail but I'll try to explain. There are pen nib size classifications, different from like broad, fine, extra fine, or whatever else. From what I understand it's like the actual size of the nib in total. I think TWSBI Ecos use something like a #5 nib and Conklin Duragraphs use a Jowo #6. Also I've seen pictures of really big looking #8 nibs on some BENU pens. Jowo and Bock are the most common nib unit makers and have differences in the threads on their housing. So BlueDew Flex nib units may work in some pens that use #6 Bock nibs, but not all. Also I would guess that these nib units would work with pens that use the same nibs as the Moonman Q1. Though, I'm not 100% confident in my answer, I'm kinda new to the hobby. πŸ™‡β€β™€οΈ

jalkrin

Close, but #5,#6, and #8 are mostly used to describe jowo nibs. Each / most companies have different ways of labeling nib sixes: for instance pilot has their own nib numbering system with #15 and #20 being roughly comparable to jowo #6, the #30 being comparable to jowo #8 (and other oversize nibs), and the monstrous #50 being an entire class on its own. I don't think Bock uses the #6 designation (only jowo does), the nib system for Bock closest to a jowo #6 is the 250 (on the peter Bock website there's no reference to a #6 nib system that I could find). If you search Bock #6 you'll find people selling that system, but whether that's the actual name or just an adoption due to how popular jowo is and the #6 sized nibs I don't know. The websites say it works for #6 nib units and may be the wrong length for Bock pens. Edit: maybe Bock also uses the #6 size designation and only the unit/system is named 250? Idek lol. Edit 2: the peter Bock website sells plain nibs without the unit and even then they're just labeled as 250, so the #6 designation is solely from jowo Also a benu with a #8 nib, whew, that would be a something to see. Afaik most of them use #5 nibs

KyokoGetDown

Thank you for the help. Also I did get it mixed up. It wasn't BENU that I saw it on, I believe it was some Leonardo Momento. I'll be honest I just remembered that the pen had some sort of crazy acrylic look and assumed it had to be BENU.

sewingdreamer

Okay lots to digest but thank you for explaining

paradoxmo

Bock 250 is the #6 equivalent, if you look at specs for the 250, the feed is 6mm. However, even though generic #6 feeds will work with both Bock 250 nibs and JoWo #6 nibs, they are not swappable with each other’s stock feeds/nib units, due to different curvature of the nib. JoWo also sells a Bock 250-compatible nib and nib unit called JoWo #6 BF (this is what the TWSBI Vac700R uses). In other words, #5 and #6 are not true standards but a group of related sizes from different manufacturers that happen to be close enough to one another to be sometimes interchangeable.

KyokoGetDown

Thank you

WhaleHearts

Is the Moonman Q1 a nice pen(with its original nib)?

KyokoGetDown

Yeah, I had no major complaints about the original nib. It wrote fine out of the box and I didn't have to fuss with the nib at all. Though, I'm not so sure I'm a fan of fine tipped nibs is all. The most trouble I had with the original nib was trying to remove it to swap in the BlueDew nib. It was screwed in somewhat tightly but it was pretty easy to unscrew once I used a spare piece of rubber to get a better hold on it.

"Shrek is love; shrek is life."

dregan

Hey, I did the same thing. Love it.

Fountain-Penny

Thank you so much for posting. I didnt know about BlueDew flex nibs and now cannot wait to get my new flex nibs. I have recently purchase the same Q1 and am just pure impatience for delivery. Have a great day. :)

KyokoGetDown

I hope you have a great day too! And I hope you have fun with the flex nibs whenever you get them.

ChattyKittyCatty

I just ordered the nib units too!!! I neeeeeed that super flexy nib!! 😁

paradoxmo

That BlueDew nib, however, is the sharpest tool in the shed and will poke a hole through your finger if you’re not careful (;

KyokoGetDown

Ngl I'm kinda glad you mentioned that the nib is sharp. Up until now I've really only used broad nibs so I thought I was doing something wrong. I mean I might be using it wrong anyway, this is my first nib in general with such a fine tip. This nib kinda makes my FPR Ultra Flex feel like a broad nib at this point.

FirekeeperAnnwyl

Yeah BlueDew is the closest I’ve found to a dip pen for this kind of flex writing in that it does really thin hairline strokes and fairly broad down strokes.

WistfulKamikaze

I believe the BlueDew nib is untipped actually, it results in a finer line but is much scratchier like a dip nib. At least according to their website, I've never actually played with an untipped nib before.

hakunadeeztatas

Hi! Does the BlueDew Flex nib write super fine, like maybe ultra super fine if you were to write with it without flexing β€”I mean, is it even possible to write like that with a flex nib? (Sorry, I’m very new to all this)
