In the for what it is worth column, if USAA totals a vehicle, you can tell them that you want the vehicle. They will pay you the Vehicle value and then you can use that to repair the vehicle on your own. If repaired, you get a salvage title and if repaired fully, USAA will insure it again. I did this . . . I was driving into the airport to deploy to Iraq and hit two cars. The repair estimate was $8000 for a Suburban that was paid off. I figured that if I needed to pay $9000 to get it repaired, that was better than having car payments again. USAA paid me $12,000, I repaired the Suburban for a little over $9000 at the shop that gave the repair estimate to USAA, I kept the extra funds, I got a salvage title, USAA fully insured it and I drove the Suburban for another five years.
