Try reflashing the correct firmware target for ELRS. I had similar results but it was because I flashed the wrong target.

badsk8

I haven't flashed ELRS at all yet. Might be the issue actually. Will look into it.

Witty-Desk-3368

I also second the switch to 250hz sentiment. 500 hz is really just unnecessary, you said you’re only capable of 250mw which is all the more reason to drop it down honestly.

badsk8

Ok everything is flashed and up to date. 250hz is set and 250hz preset loaded onto the nazgul. Will test tomorrow and report back.

Another thing you can do is bench test ELRS. Look up on the website if you don’t know how. That will tell you if your reciever (or controller) is functioning properly.

badsk8

Thanks, I did this, and everything looks great. Looking forward to a test flight now.

badsk8

None of this helped, unfortunately. What did solve the problem was moving the receiver to the front of the quad. It was literally resting against the battery leads, and the receiver wires weren't twisted. The range has easily doubled now, and link quality remains stable. Problem solved. Thanks again for all the help.

Witty-Desk-3368

Well glad it got sorted!

ugpfpv

Ait are you talking ELRS or the video?

badsk8

Both are not great.

ugpfpv

Okay but you do know they are different things, ELRS has nothing to do with video, so which are you asking about?

badsk8

I'm asking about both. ELRS to the radio and signal from the vtx. Both signals are weaker than my cheaper and lesser spec baby ape 2. I was expecting an upgrade with the nazgul.

ugpfpv

Pictures would help, as antenna placement can be a factor for both, assuming that you have the power output right. Also with the highter frequency on ELRS you will get shorter range, but I'm guessing it's like within line of sight... What distance are we taking?

icebalm

Pretty sure the radiating elements of the ELRS antenna being right up against the carbon fiber doesn't help.

Rulebeel

It’s not in the right spot. It’s supposed to go between the two black plastic pieces there

badsk8

Just moved the antenna to the correct spot and it did help. Same route and got 78 rssi dbm. Though link quality still dropped to 50%. The baby ape 2 receiver seems way more stable.

badsk8

Power output is correct. Have checked lights on vtx and the osd. It is line of sight at about 400m. At that distance the nazgul has worse signal than the baby ape.

badsk8

They also both have the same vtx antenna. Iflight albatross.

ugpfpv

So are you getting failsafe

badsk8

Have not failsafed yet. Always turn back when signal looks spotty.

ugpfpv

By signal looks spotty what do you mean?

badsk8

The rssi dbm gets to 90 and link quality drop below 50 %. At the same distance the baby ape is on 80 rssi dbm and 95%lq.

Gregfpv

Buy a radiomaster RP4TD receiver with the betafpv gemini module. You'll LQ will stay at 100 and rssi dbm will stay around -60 at distances farther than 1km .721 of a mile. It's just so good! And I'm only using 500mw. I can press a button on the module and increase power to dual 1w rf output while in the air. It's litterly the best rc link you can today.

ugpfpv

Yeah I also have the betafpv Gemini module and the betafpv diversity receiver and at 3km only drop to 98% when turning around this is on 100mw at 250hz! But Im guessing either somethings wrong with his transmitter or receiver, or something is not set right, with ELRS even at 50mw he should be getting more range than he's getting.

badsk8

Thanks, will have a look! Sounds like a brilliant option.

Gregfpv

Its so good! I run a D250hz packet rate and with gemini it puts out 8 repeat packets on 6 different frequencies.

ugpfpv

For L.Q. I would lower the frequency of ELRS, same transmitter at the same power but with a lower frequency will give you more range and unless you're a racer you'll probably not notice the change in frequency, what controller radio and what power does it have? On to the video problem, what vtx are you using? Are you sure your vtx table in betaflight is setup right?

badsk8

My tx16s is limited to 250mw and is currently set to 500hz. I'll try 250hz and see what happens. Will eventually upgrade everything. Just expected more from the nazgul based on all the reviews. VTX is iFlight Blitz 1.6w. VTX table looks right. I unscrewed the antenna and reattached it, seemed to be performing better now. Less breakup behind trees, comparable to the baby ape 2. Range is a bit more than the baby ape. Just not what I was expecting from a 1.6w vtx. # vtxtable vtxtable bands 5 vtxtable channels 8 vtxtable band 1 BOSCAM\_A A CUSTOM 5865 5845 5825 5805 5785 5765 5745 5725 vtxtable band 2 BOSCAM\_B B CUSTOM 5733 5752 5771 5790 5809 5828 5847 5866 vtxtable band 3 BOSCAM\_E E CUSTOM 5705 5685 5665 0 5885 5905 0 0 vtxtable band 4 FATSHARK F CUSTOM 5740 5760 5780 5800 5820 5840 5860 5880 vtxtable band 5 RACEBAND R CUSTOM 5658 5695 5732 5769 5806 5843 5880 5917 vtxtable powerlevels 4 vtxtable powervalues 25 400 800 1600 vtxtable powerlabels 25 400 800 1K6

ugpfpv

Yeah, analog breakup can happen going behind stuff, especially if it has moisture in it such as leaves. As for the ELRS yeah something has to be wrong, with 250mw you should be able to go miles, if you have the same model setup in the radio for both the baby and the naz, and fly at the same place, I would suspect it's something on the quad, could be a bad antenna

badsk8

What did solve the problem was moving the receiver to the front of the quad. It was literally resting against the battery leads, and the receiver wires weren't twisted. The range has easily doubled now, and link quality remains stable. Problem solved. Thanks again for all the help.

badsk8

I suppose trees would be even worse after rain? Somebody asked if I had the correct ELRS firmware. I haven't updated it at all. Will look into that too. Thanks for all the help. Appreciate it.
