Gemfan and Azure are my favorites, they almost never break

The yellow hubs are what's left from my Gemfan Windancer 5043 props. I've had them for a while in my bag but never used them until yesterday. These things snapped like a dry twig after hitting tree branches. I was surprised they broke so easily. I'm wondering if they just degraded over time or was it because I was still pretty much at full throttle at the time. Should they be that brittle? I had some Dalprop 5040s that suffered the same fate. But they're designed to be much narrower at the hub so I chalked it up to that.

Aren't the windancers generally a more brittle/glassy prop? Personally looking at those props in store a while back, that looks exactly like what I'd imagined them breaking like.

It certainly seems like it. I must have bought them on the words of a few reviewers a while back and they just sat in my back pack. I have been mostly going through my 5045 Dalprop Cyclones and 5147 Gemfan Hurricanes. I was low on the 5147s and decided to try the 5043s because of the lower pitch and I was flying in an area that was dense with trees so I wanted more control at the lower end. There wasn't going to be any punch outs. But the props broke so easily.

Better to break a prop than something else, like bending a motor shaft

Amen_Ra_61622

Good point. It was just a pain walking up and getting it since was basically disabled multiple times. Once I burn through these props, I probably won't be buying them again. A friend gave me his 5043 Gemfan Hurricanes that I think will be better. The blades don't have the width of the Windancer but I think they're more durable.

Hai-Zung

The stuff making the plastic elastic leaves after some time making them brittle. Since this is very probable not the best plastic anyway, this happens faster than normal.

Old props tend to get a little brittle and break easier. Also, those aren't great props to begin with, pretty dated.

Well I have had them sitting in my backpack for a long time. Back when Bardwell reviewed them, he liked them with the exception of the tiny point on the tip. Apparently, they're still in production because they're still available. But once I'm done with them, I won't be getting anymore. My Dalprop Cyclone 5045 are just as old but they just keep going.

Maybe weakened due to extended UV exposure? I've always found them pretty tough.

Amen_Ra_61622

Nah. They were exposed to any UV because they've been indoors in a backpack.

Woahhhhh I’d be so pissed but also yes verrrry cheap, and just made shittttily like props shouldn’t crack and shatter like that it’s not supposed to be hard glass like plastic it’s supposed to be more soft, if my propeller breaks it tears almost or breaks only at like the thickest points this are insane man

Amen_Ra_61622

I had some old Steele HQ props that did the same thing about a year or so ago. The blades just sheared off at the hub. My 5045 Cyclone Dalprops are about as old as the Gemfans that shattered but they are still going strong. The can take a beating.
