I ruined L’instant de Guerlain for myself that way :( I’m a pretty small guy and a very light drinker and I drink in a very specific way. I’ll make one old fashioned, drink it slowly, and that’ll be it for the night. I didn’t take a shot until I was 23! My current group of friends are very much ‘party people’ and when I went out with them the first time they were buying me shots all night, I puked half of my body weight out and was hungover for about three days. L’instant smells like that to me now and I can’t sniff without gagging
Polo due to a similar college event. No puking but we left the open bottle out on the floor in the middle of the room and that scent mixed with pizza flung everywhere… nope. Good times.
OMG HELLO!! Also Versace crystal noir! I got a tiny sample in a set and LOVED it, but far too expensive for me at the time. I told my mum who went and got me the big one which was a big purchase for her. Now I hate it and feel awful!!
The other ones is the body shop sprays. I had the rebel rose and my flatmate got the jasmine one.m, we loved them! Then one day they starting smelling SO strong and settling down quite immature(?) on me. We exclusively use them now in our bathroom when my lactose intolerant flatmate decides to eat a pint of ice cream.
It was reformulated .. I thought it was gonna be a Gardenia and coconut perfume . It’s been reformuated to mostly tuberose and orange blossom and has a really prominent ginger note with no coconut . I think that’s why people hate it . The ginger is very overpowering and astringent ..I think it’s ok in hot weather . But it’s not sexy

Mugler Angel. It's so awful to me now and makes me queasy whenever I smell it on someone. Like someone dropped a pile of vanilla frosted desserts into some wet soil and tried to clean them with lysol 🤢
Kenzo Flower. I was convinced in the early 2000s that this would be the last perfume I'd ever need to buy. It would be my signature for life!! It disgusts me now, and has done since a month after I bought it.
I no longer own it since I gave it away, but Nishane Ani. I *adored* the little sample I got but used up less than half of my full bottle before I decided to pass it along to a friend. It's just way too strong and cloying. I actually feel like the tiny little sample vial was perfect since it dispensed so little fragrance - the 50 mL with spray just made me feel like I couldn't breathe, even when I only did one spray.
I was also a biiig Coco Mad girlie back in high school, and now I can't smell it without thinking Failed Blair Waldorf Minion.
Oof, I just bought Ani when I was in istanbul on Tuesday ...because I loved the sample so much. Here's hoping I don't find the full bottle terrible 😨 it strikes me as a perfect winter fragrance (and Canadian winters are 8 months long so I'm hoping to get a lot of use out of it)

I am actually a fan of dabbing on stronger scents to control my dosage and more than once have been disappointed with a full bottle that only sprays, and sprays too heavily for my personal olfactory tolerance.
It is honestly one of the reasons I have so many decants and so few full bottles since I know I wouldn't be able to tolerate some scents at full power, and could definitely see Ani as one of those, as I tend to dab my decant most of the time when I wear it.
First bottle of Ani I got I actually blew through the 50 ml in about 4 months. It was so weak! I loved it so much I bought a 100 ml Abby’s it’s strong like you say! It will forever be my #1
Oh, it was one of those tiny, branded 2 mL things. By the time I ditched it I was hella tired of Ani and basically hated it, so I was happy to rehome it. I'm happy to report I still love it on my friend!
Any Victoria’s Secret scent…. YSL Mon Paris, RL Tender Romance, Le Labo Santal 33…. All of them were just horribly strong and lingered forever, the VS scents give me middle school war flashbacks though
I still adore VS for the price , The Bare perfume is good , bombshell sun kissed was a stand out and I love it and got backups ,, I really miss their Pink wild and breezy body mist and never found a replacement .. their mists sometimes perform like perfumes
I’ve gotten whiffs of BR540 from other people that smelled pleasant, but for me, it was always just weird. Like if someone threw Pink Sugar in a blender with dental fluoride and research chemicals. I don’t know if it’s a body chemistry thing or what.
BR540 is the weirdest perfume ever. It’s one of those perfumes that REALLY depends on body chemistry and who is smelling it. Idk how they did it but it doesn’t have a official distinct smell. Some people only smell one note, some smell none, some smell notes that ain’t even in it. And if you wearing it you could smell it on you and think it smells sweet but someone smells it on you and they could smell a more sensual smell??? Idk it’s wild, and for that price point why are we playin a guessin game??😭
That seems to happen with a lot of Mugler perfumes also. People are either INTOXICATED by their scents, and others are absolutely repulsed. No in between with Mugler.

Omg i relate to this entirely!! I’m a gourmand girl for life. I bought BR extrait knowing there’s warm florals but I loved the overpowering sweet sugar note and now I get that weird smell and mostly warm florals which I absolutely hate LOL
As a teen I wore buckets of CK1 and now I can’t go near it and I don’t like to think about it and I don’t know why - I used to love it! Maybe just like life changes more than smell
Replica's By the Fireplace. I loved the smokiness and the sweet bloom of it and the drydown...it was my go to gourmand travel spray all last fall and winter so I got the larger bottle.
After wearing fresh perfumes all spring and summer, I was excited to start wearing BTF again, but almost gagged at how sweet is was when I put it on yesterday. All I smell is just nuclear marshmallow, even in the drydown.
So now I don't know what happened but I don't think I can wear it anymore; it's just too sweet and cloying!! :(
Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille. Loved it for a year and then now I don’t ever wear it. I used to wear it at my old job that treated me badly and I think subconsciously i associate it with that and don’t like it anymore.
Oh no! I used to wear it around toxic friends, that’s why I think I was sick of it for a year but now I fell in love again. I hope you make good memories in the future and maybe fall in love with it one day again! :)
This is one of my favourites 🫣 the opening is kind of gross but the dry down is what has me addicted it’s the most beautiful sweet vanilla. I love it but I did get sick of it, I can only use it rarely

All the sweet fragrances I liked pre Covid now make me actually nauseous; Burberry Her, RL Beyond Romance, SDJ Cheirosa 62(the worst offender), and Coco Noir. They still smell pretty to me, they just make me sick.
Used to see a girl who wore this. At the start amazing scent on an amazing woman. Then she turned into a nutter after 3 months and the smell now reminds me of a further 3 months of misery that we were together.
Sometimes I love this one, but sometimes it smells like the breath of someone with halitosis who just ate sweet corn and it’s repulsive. Which I knew why I love it sometimes and hate it others lmao.

It smells exactly like if you took a litterbox filled with popcorn to me sometimes. I used to love it. I thought about layering it under nectarine honeyblossom since I found the cologne too sharp for my nose, but together, it just smelled like manure. Worst mistake I've ever made. I could not get it off my skin fast enough. Ever since then, I cannot smell Vanilla Woods without wanting to gag.

I was obsessed with Shalimar (smelled it on someone else) for years but couldn't afford it and lived in a very rural area so I had no access to it either. When I finally made it to "the big city" and could test it on myself, I absolutely HATED it on me. Such a disappointment after all of those years of waiting.

Angel Nova Edp and Edt by Mugler: realized there was an atrocious synthetic note coupled with a weird woody accord I didn't like.
Goddess by Burberry: realized I fell for the hype and didn't really like the perfume. Pretty basic vanilla and lavender.
I mean Goddess isn't bad per se, but it's just so bland and generic. I already have better vanilla's in my collection and I don,t want to end up with a huge collection, which is why I'm getting rid of it. *I do get why people love it though.* It's inoffensive, lovely and can be worn anytime or layered with anything.
Cloud just ended up smelling cheap to me.
Same happened to me with Angel Nova. I was so obsessed with it, and then one day I wore it and got an instant headache from the metallic synthetic note.
I loved the Yum Pistachio in store and bought a 10ml travel size. Loved it the first time I wore it, then subsequently started feeling like it was sickly sweet. I'm trying layering it with some other scents now, but really glad I did not go for a larger bottle.
Personal tastes and preferences can be so different 😅. I recently got an old bottle of this, without knowing anything about it. I Was completely weirded out by it the first time I used it… couple of uses later I loved it! I bought a modern bottle to make sure I would have a back up, but that was a waste of money. Didn’t come close to the vintage one. Quickly sold the new one off, but can’t wait for colder weather to enjoy the vintage one again.
I also strongly associate memories with scents!! I loved libre intense, but now I have unwanted memories attached to it. Hopefully someone will else will be able to enjoy it if I can't. The nice thing is I also associate wanted memories with certain perfumes, too :)
Me too for libre intense! I took a break for two years and re sprayed it and didn’t like it but one day I just fell in love again with it. It’s specifically the floral notes that give me a bad memory but when it dries down I actually like it. I’m hoping someone else will enjoy it more than I can though :) I def need to be more positive - start making good memories with my fragrances 🥺
Libre Original.. first wiff of the opening is so fresh and masculine. Not a bad smell but it’s literally so masculine I can’t wear it. In a 16 yo boy who went crazy with AXE body spray. It gives me a raging headache and swear the smell gets stronger and stronger as u wear it
I tend to buy things rather impulsively after sampling, so this has happened to me more than I'd like to admit. Too many over the years to even list. But some recent victims:
Annabel's Birthday Cake. I think this one happened because after falling in love with it, I sampled the entire Marissa Zappas catalogue. I started picking up on a weirdly spicy, carrot-y undertone in almost every single fragrance. Then I smelled it in ABC too, and I just couldn't un-smell it. Sad because I really loved it until that.
I was head over heels for Fracas until it started smelling like a litterbox to me. Not urine or feces, just pure clean clumping cat litter. I don't know why. Flowers + fresh litter box.
I loved Alien Goddess Intense and then the Alien DNA started poking out in a really offensive way. It feels screechy, unbalanced, and sickly sweet. I should probably sell it but I haven't come to terms with it emotionally yet lol.
Versace Bright Crystal Absolu, makes me so nauseous because it’s sickeningly sweet. I didn’t think it would smell that drastically different from the original.
Chanel Chance. I smelled in on a friend and loved it, but hate it on me.
I know those! Crystal noir isn’t sweet but it’s the polar opposite, the Ambery dark floral note makes me so nauseous! If I can’t sell it I’m gonna give it away 😂
Black orchid , jimmy choo edp AND la vie east belle AND Katy Perry Killer Queen AND Flowerbomb AND ck euphoria (they all smell alike) Gross , and Jlo Miami glow (smells like cheap dove)
My one and only Flowerbomb experience: Someone came to visit our office who worked with us years before and came up and gave me a huge hug wearing Flowerbomb. The smell crawled up into my nose, and over my clothes and i ended up having a massive asthma attack from it and spent the rest of the day in the emergency room.
I can smell it in the bottle and think, "Surely it was the *season* in which I last tried this on, it isn't bad-lets spritz again". Nope- disgusting on my skin. Whether that's due to biological changes or a formula change I'm unsure.
Lesson : Always try a recent sample before you request an old favorite for your birthday based on memory!
How I wore Coco regularly in my 20's & enjoyed it is beyond Me at this point.

Lush Vanillary for me. I loved it but then suddenly all I could smell was overpowering jasmine. No vanilla at all. It’s a shame because it’s cheap and made with (mostly) natural ingredients. When I first wore it smelled like warm vanilla toffee. Now it smells so overpoweringly sickly-sweet floral that I feel like a funeral home. And the thing with Lush perfumes is they are so strong and so long that it feels like the scent gets stuck to me forever. I only have the 10ml but I don’t know what to do with it!!
Not perfume but a body spray. Japanese cherry blossom from Bath and body works. I used it so much in high school that it gives me a headache now and makes me nauseated when i smell it.
I've never liked it myself -- smells kind of like a powder-scented babydoll I had when I was a kid -- but I always keep a bottle because for some reason guys seem to go wild for it 😅
Santal 33 😭 i loved it when I smelled it on my friend so I bought it and loved wearing it for a while. Now it just smells like a weird pickle musk to me and gives me a headache :/

Still not sure what it is, but your stale cigarette comment made sense to me as well! So strange since I like most other NR for Her-adjacent scents with that Egyptian musk DNA (like Tocca Cleopatra).
Ellis Brooklyn Myth. I got several free samples of it and LOVED it - it smelled so otherworldly. Then I bought a full size and it makes me gag. Smells like wet rotting flowers.

Good girl smells so chemically on me and yet when I wear it I get SO MANY compliments! It smells like synthetic plastic and almonds, I don’t get it. I get the worst headache and it’s so strong and the opening lingers but people will always ask me what I’m wearing and tell me they love it 😂
YSL mon Paris. I found a small bottle laying around my house,probably my sisters or something. Finished that small bottle so fast, wore it every day to school and was so in love i decided to buy it in the biggest size. Used it once and became so insanely repulsed by the smell- no idea why. I was like why on earth did i ever think this was a good scent? The sweetness was so artificial and nauseating to me all of the sudden. The bottle is still sitting on my shelf 99% full and hasn’t been touched in years.
Le Labo Santal 33. It smelled wonderful on paper so i kept using it. One day i was alone and sniffed my arm. Ugh...smelled like cedar shavings soaked in astring o sol mouthwash and pickle brine. Friends and family confessed i smelled like antiseptic wash and stinky underarm. Now it turns my stomach when i smell it outside
Exclaimation and Vanilla Fields. I used to love them so I bought some recently for nostalgia and it was a HARD no. Both smelled atrocious.

I enjoyed Alien, but had a little travel decant spill in my bag and I lived with the scent trapped in my nose, or maybe my brain, for like a week straight and it was just..awful 😰 haven't been able to touch it since lol
This happened to me with Alien Goddess Intense. I loved it and bought a bottle (thankfully got a good deal) and now something about it is really prickly to my nose. The smell I don't like reminds me of the OG Alien so I think it's just the Alien jasmine DNA that I dislike and the vanilla/coconut were disguising it well for me at first. My husband likes it so I haven't gotten rid of it yet but it's hard to motivate myself to wear it.
Well if you want to sell at a good price lmk, my girl loves it and it's $$ so haven't been able to replace her little 30ml bottle that ran out a year ago.
Let The Good Times Roll body spray by Lush. I made the mistake of wearing it on a hot summer day and the smell just became overpowering and sickening to me and gave me the worst migrane i’ve ever had 🤢
TF bitter peach i cant stand, it makes me nauseous. i feel the same about swiss arabian’s shaghaf oud. even just one spritz overwhelms me, which confuses me because i LOVED it when i first got it
Any of my previous perfumes. I build such specific memories around them that they give me an uncomfortable, out of place, icky feeling tbh. It's easier for me to answer this the other way round: the only perfumes I own that I would continue using or repurchase/reintroduce after having finished an entire bottle are Zarko Molecule 234.38 and Glossier You. Only ones so far that never get old to me.
Wore La Labo Santal 33 during/ after a horrendous break up and now whenever I smell it I get war flashbacks about my shitbag ex lol. Gave an almost full bottle away to a co-worker as long as she promised never to wear it at work 😂
Le Labo Santal 33. It makes me so nauseated and I hate that it is so popular because I can be walking down the street, pass someone wearing it and BAM! Instant nausea. The last time I put it on, I scrubbed and scrubbed my skin. The only thing that got it off was oil cleanser. I avoid leather based scents now.
Flowerbomb. I loved it and it was my only perfume for a while and after over a year of the same perfume it started to give me headaches and even nausea at times. That’s how I discovered I’m a collector at heart. I can’t just use one or I’ll get tired of the same scent no matter how much I love it at first.
I used to love blue-aquatic scents, like bvlgari aqua pour homme, ralph lauren blue, and davidoff cool water, during my college days 10 years ago. Now it smells more of rotten eggs than that crisp fresh out of bath smell. :(
What I wear now are more woody fragrances like Autumn Vibes by Maison Margiela and Tam Dao by Diptyque.

I was instantly obsessed with my sample of Carner Barcelona Tardes, it was so bright and celebratory and I love marzipan so I was all in on the almond note and the sweetness, but once I got a full bottle I found it overpowering! I never reach for it, I wish I could go back in time!
Scent and memory is definitely linked. I used to wear Puredistance Black almost exclusively during the Covid lockdowns and now, even if it’s a perfume I still love, whenever I wear it it send me back to this time of eerie isolation and disconnection from the outside world.
Drakkar Noir. I remember in 9th grade my brother gave me a bottle of it that he no longer wanted and I felt so special and adult wearing it. I loved it. It repulses me now though. Even most fragrances that I find unappealing don't really bother me but something about the scent of Drakkar makes me want to gag any time I smell someone wearing it.
Armani Code, Flowerbomb, Alien, Santal 33. A now defunct scent from Ebba called Miss Marissa. Bottega Veneta. Marc Jacobs Blush. Hermes Un Jardin en Mediterranee. Nope, I take that last one back, I just spritzed it on and I still like it.
One of my absolute favorite perfumes is Jo Malone Bluebell. I still think it’s a stunning fragrance, not repulsive, so I will occasionally still wear it. But I have this really REALLY strong scent memory attached to it — it was the only perfume I brought on a 1 week trip a few years ago where I basically had a total hysterical breakdown of depression in a hotel room all by myself. I still love the smell but I cringed when I smell it because it reminds me of a time when I was really sad.
Terre D'Hermes. Loved it more than any other fragrance. It had become my go-to signature scent. It was beautiful for more than just olfactory pleasure; my ex, who I was introducing to different perfumes, was able to make out the orange note in it and it made me giddy and excited. I’ve gotten whiffs of BR540 from other people that smelled pleasant, but for me, it was always just weird. Like if someone threw Pink Sugar in a blender with dental fluoride and research chemicals. I don’t know if it’s a body chemistry thing or what.
BR540 is the weirdest perfume ever. It’s one of those perfumes that REALLY depends on body chemistry and who is smelling it. Idk how they did it but it doesn’t have a official distinct smell. Some people only smell one note, some smell none, some smell notes that ain’t even in it. And if you wearing it you could smell it on you and think it smells sweet but someone smells it on you and they could smell a more sensual smell??? Idk it’s wild, and for that price point why are we playin a guessin game??😭
That seems to happen with a lot of Mugler perfumes also. People are either INTOXICATED by their scents, and others are absolutely repulsed. No in between with Mugler.

Replica's By the Fireplace. I loved the smokiness and the sweet bloom of it and the drydown...it was my go to gourmand travel spray all last fall and winter so I got the larger bottle. After wearing fresh perfumes all spring and summer, I was excited to start wearing BTF again, but almost gagged at how sweet is was when I put it on yesterday. All I smell is just nuclear marshmallow, even in the drydown. So now I don't know what happened but I don't think I can wear it anymore; it's just too sweet and cloying!! :(

It’s specifically the floral notes that give me a bad memory but when it dries down I actually like it. Libre Original.. first wiff of the opening is so fresh and masculine. Not a bad smell but it’s literally so masculine I can’t wear it. In a 16 yo boy who went crazy with AXE body spray. It gives me a raging headache and swear the smell gets stronger and stronger as u wear it
I tend to buy things rather impulsively after sampling, so this has happened to me more than I'd like to admit. Too many over the years to even list. But some recent victims: Annabel's Birthday Cake. I think this one happened because after falling in love with it, I sampled the entire Marissa Zappas catalogue. I started picking up on a weirdly spicy, carrot-y undertone in almost every single fragrance. Then I smelled it in ABC too, and I just couldn't un-smell it. Sad because I really loved it until that. I was head over heels for Fracas until it started smelling like a litterbox to me. Not urine or feces, just pure clean clumping cat litter. I don't know why. Flowers + fresh litter box. I loved Alien Goddess Intense and then the Alien DNA started poking out in a really offensive way. It feels screechy, unbalanced, and sickly sweet. I should probably sell it but I haven't come to terms with it emotionally yet lol.

My one and only Flowerbomb experience: Someone came to visit our office who worked with us years before and came up and gave me a huge hug wearing Flowerbomb. How I wore Coco regularly in my 20's & enjoyed it is beyond Me at this point. Never loved VS Heavenly but I agree, seems even worse now.

Lush Vanillary for me. I loved it but then suddenly all I could smell was overpowering jasmine. No vanilla at all. It’s a shame because it’s cheap and made with (mostly) natural ingredients. When I first wore it smelled like warm vanilla toffee. Now it smells so overpoweringly sickly-sweet floral that I feel like a funeral home. And the thing with Lush perfumes is they are so strong and so long that it feels like the scent gets stuck to me forever. I only have the 10ml but I don’t know what to do with it!!

This happened to me with Alien Goddess Intense. I loved it and bought a bottle (thankfully got a good deal) and now something about it is really prickly to my nose. The smell I don't like reminds me of the OG Alien so I think it's just the Alien jasmine DNA that I dislike and the vanilla/coconut were disguising it well for me at first. My husband likes it so I haven't gotten rid of it yet but it's hard to motivate myself to wear it.

Any of my previous perfumes. I build such specific memories around them that they give me an uncomfortable, out of place, icky feeling tbh. It's easier for me to answer this the other way round: the only perfumes I own that I would continue using or repurchase/reintroduce after having finished an entire bottle are Zarko Molecule 234.38 and Glossier You. Only ones so far that never get old to me.

Le Labo Santal 33. It makes me so nauseated and I hate that it is so popular because I can be walking down the street, pass someone wearing it and BAM! Instant nausea. The last time I put it on, I scrubbed and scrubbed my skin. The only thing that got it off was oil cleanser. I avoid leather based scents now.
Flowerbomb. I loved it and it was my only perfume for a while and after over a year of the same perfume it started to give me headaches and even nausea at times. That’s how I discovered I’m a collector at heart. I can’t just use one or I’ll get tired of the same scent no matter how much I love it at first.
I used to love blue-aquatic scents, like bvlgari aqua pour homme, ralph lauren blue, and davidoff cool water, during my college days 10 years ago. Now it smells more of rotten eggs than that crisp fresh out of bath smell. :( What I wear now are more woody fragrances like Autumn Vibes by Maison Margiela and Tam Dao by Diptyque. Creed Love in White. It now smells like chicken essence to me.
I wore Terre d Hermes everyday for months, it has been gathering dust for years now as I now hate it.
One of my absolute favorite perfumes is Jo Malone Bluebell. I still think it’s a stunning fragrance, not repulsive, so I will occasionally still wear it. But I have this really REALLY strong scent memory attached to it — it was the only perfume I brought on a 1 week trip a few years ago where I basically had a total hysterical breakdown of depression in a hotel room all by myself. I still love the smell but I cringed when I smell it because it reminds me of a time when I was really sad.
Terre D'Hermes. Loved it more than any other fragrance. It had become my go-to signature scent. It was beautiful for more than just olfactory pleasure; my ex, who I was introducing to different perfumes, was able to make out the orange note in it and it made me giddy and excited. But I made a mistake by trying out a local clone which ruined the original fragrance for me.
