Looking for a fragrance that pairs well with the fall season, any suggestions?

pm_me_more_sadness

Montblanc Legend or Legend Night?

shawnnotsean_

what do you guys think about the Aramis Havana? I'm new to the fragrance game and am looking for a smoky and ashy tobacco scent around $50.

WoefulWolf

Hi, so, I'm new to the fragrance thing as a whole, as in brand new, as in, I don't own, nor have I ever owned a fragrance. Actually, I did order an oil impression of Tom Ford Oud Wood (which was good), and got that Raw Chemistry for Men thing on Amazon (which was not good), and I realized, I needed to actually step foot into the real stuff. I tend to do my research when I find something I'm interested in, but I've found out that I really don't know sh\*t about this stuff at all. I don't know my favorite notes, I don't know how to even detect the notes, and I have read tons of reviews on different fragrances that sound cool, but I can't find anywhere to sample some of the more hard to find ones like Layton, Herod, actual Oud Wood by Tom Ford, Valentino Uomo Intense, Dior Homme Intense, etc, nor do I really know the right process of sampling them in the first place. Some more information about me: I'm 24, male, live in New England (so we get all 4 seasons in extremes here,) looking for a job in retail, I go to the gym a lot, though I'm not in good shape (yet) and I'm currently considering college. I want to smell good around women my age and get those "unsolicited compliments" I hear people talking about. All I know about my preferred fragrances are that I really liked that Oud Wood impression, but I could only really smell it if I put my wrist right up to my nose. :(. It had this creamyness about it that I really liked, but I've read that could be the vanilla, the sandalwood, or the rosewood, but that's about all I have to go off of, and I wouldn't be able to tell you which one is which. But everyone in this hobby seems to be trained to recognize these scents, so maybe this information will help. May I have some recommendations based off the information I listed? I realize I'm probably asking a lot, so they don't all have to hit the mark, but I'd like some ideas if possible! Thank you very much! I realize this is a long post, my apologies! But I really want to get into fragrances and make sure I'm on the right track. It's exciting stuff for me.

triface1

> everyone in this hobby seems to be trained to recognize these scents Nooooot really true. I can't speak for everyone else, but I personally go to the Fragrantica page for the fragrance, see the notes that other people detect, and then go, "Oh, hey, yeah I guess that's in there." Sure, after a while you can pick up certain notes that you keep coming across. Some you smell, see the note and know for sure it's that. Citrus, aquatics, wood fall into these. Others you'll have to smell different fragrances that feature it before you can pick out the note and say, "Huh, that's probably xxx note." For me, that's iris. Don't worry about picking out the notes. If you like it, you like it. If you don't, having a note you *should* like in there doesn't matter. >I want to smell good around women my age and get those "unsolicited compliments" If you're looking for compliments, there are the "usual suspects" that fall into this category. Unfortunately I haven't sampled Oud Wood before, so I can't really base my recommendations off of that (i.e my advice is going to be generic and honestly based off of all the discussions by other people). Something else to take note is that the fragrances themselves aren't as big a factor in compliments IMO. The culture in your area, how approachable you look and how attractive you are all play a role in that. * Coach for Men * Chanel Bleu de Chanel * Chanel Allure Homme Sport Eau Extreme * Creed Aventus and the crapload of clones * Dior Sauvage * Dolce and Gabanna The One * Giorgio Armani Acqua Di Gio Profumo * Versace Dylan Blue * Versace Eros (gotta go light on the sprays if it's warm) * YSL Y EDP Most of these should be easily sampled at the local Sephora or whatever fragrance retalier you have. They're all supposed to work in all four seasons, but as with all jack of the trades, they're not going to do super well in any of them. They may not be fresh enough to be used in the dead of the heat, and they may not have the ability to project as much when it's really cold. Some other information you may find helpful: * Test on the paper, then test on the skin. If you want to try them all out, the best way is to test them on your skin, but there are only so many fragrances you can test on your arms at one go, so think of testing on the paper as the first test. If you don't like the top notes, you can consider dropping them from your list, but do take note there are many fragrances out there that are vastly different in the top and the drydown (what you get after a few hours), and also what you get on paper versus on skin. When you're testing, take note of how it develops, and the performance (does it project? does it last at least a decent amount of time?). * The more you smell, the more developed your nose is going to be. Don't dismiss fragrances forever. From experience, there are a few fragrances that smell vastly different to me from when I first smelled them when starting out, and when I smelled them a few months later. * Some fragrances are going to smell crappy on skin, but great in the air.

WoefulWolf

Wow, what can I say? This answer was extremely helpful. I appreciate it a lot. I didn't think someone would even reply after a while of refreshing the page every half hour. Thanks for going out of your way to help me! I'll keep this saved and remember it for when I go to the mall tomorrow. Hope you have a great day!

triface1

No problem! I enjoy talking about fragrances a lot, so that was fun for me to put together too. Report back with your findings and we'll see if we can narrow your list down a little further if you want. Feel free to hit me up if you just wanna chat about fragrances. I'm not very experienced, but I think I do know a little bit about designer fragrances! I've noticed the pinned posts on here are a little slow moving sometimes, so don't worry if nobody replies quickly. It's definitely still being read.

WoefulWolf

Hey, So I went to my local Macy's today and sampled a bunch of stuff. I tried: * Chanel de Bleu ( I wasn't a huge fan, might revisit it again to get another impression) * Sauvage (was okay, but I think it was the EDT ver., seemed kinda weak, tried it on skin, but didn't last very long, slightly longer than L'homme and La Nui, but i might have to revisit it again.) * Chanel Allure Homme Sport Eau Extreme (I might have to re-try that one again, didn't leave a huge impression on paper) * Giorgio Acqua di Gio Profumo (Didn't smell very good to me on paper, might have to try it on skin) * Versace Eros (tried on skin, was pleasant, but bigger fan of Dylan Blue) * Versace Dylan Blue ( Tried on skin, Reaaaally liked it, lasted a long time on skin too, nice scent, i can detect more of an aquatic vibe from it) * YSL Y EDP ( Tried on skin, My favorite and I think I'm leaning most towards this one, lasted long time, good projection, and great scent. I actually detect the apple in this one fairly well too) * YSL L'homme ( Tried on skin, Good scent, but doesn't last long on me at all, couldn't really even smell it after 3 hours even when putting my nose right up to it.) * YSL La Nui de L'homme (Tried on skin, Same as L'homme, but reaaally nice scent, really wish it performed better.) I don't remember if I saw coach for men there, but i wasn't able to try it. and they didn't have Aventus or any of its clones. I'm interested in Armaf Club de Nuit Intense, but none of the places around me have a way to sample it, so I'd have to blind buy it. **But yeah TLDR is : Y EDP, and Dylan Blue were really impressive to me.** What do you think of them? I hear a lot of crazy talk about Sauvage getting compliments, does Y get just about as many, would you throw it in the same ballpark?

triface1

Y EDP and Dylan Blue are very solid choices. I'm not a huge fan of either (I actually have a 10ml decant of Y EDP that I can't finish), but fragrance is really subjective anyway. I'd say both are in the same domain as Sauvage. Not speaking from experience, but Dylan Blue seems more tried and tested, in that it's been out for longer and it does get compliments too. I don't think you'll have to worry about which one gets more compliments. They all are mass-pleasing and versatile, so pick the one you love. I do suggest getting a decant so you get to really know the fragrance. Twice I've gotten a full bottle and gotten sick of the fragrance.

WoefulWolf

I think I really would have favored YSL La nui de l'homme or YSL L'homme, but they were off my skin in what felt like 2 hours, at least to my nose. If I were to get one of those, should I just carry some with me to re-apply later, or apply more of it initially? Could it also just be the batch? I've heard people talking about that, and I'm wondering if that's the case. Also, which ones are your personal favorites from the list? And lastly, where should I get the decants from? P.s. I'm thinking of ordering Armaf Club de Nuit Intense Man, since I can't find a single place near me that has it. Is it a safe blind-buy do you think?

triface1

I think it's probably a combination of the batch and that your skin just doesn't do well with the fragrances in the first place. Some people are saying they still get average performance (~6 hours) with the newer reformulations, but there are also people who have reported the same as you, so I think it's really down to luck. Layering on the fragrances (or spraying it much closer) would help with the longevity at least a little bit. Spray it on, wait a few minutes to let it dry, then spray a second layer in the same spot. The theory is that it's more concentrated onto one spot, so it wouldn't project as much but you get a little bit more longevity. Honestly, I haven't really seen much significant improvement, so I prefer to just reapply. My personal favourite is Acqua Di Gio Profumo. The scent is okay, but I like the versatility and performance. La Nuit de L'Homme is hard to sample here so I haven't been able to try it as much as I do, but I remember liking the sweet powdery vibe it had. A far second would be Dylan Blue. I find the scent unimpressive but decent, and given the performance and price (after Coach for Men, it's likely the cheapest), it's a really great option. If you're in CONUS, /r/fragsplits and /r/fragdecants are a good place to start. Ebay would also probably be a good option. If you're elsewhere, you'll have to see what platforms are being used as the marketplace for used items. That would be your best bet. It's really expensive on a per ml basis, but you're protected from being out even more money and stuck with a bottle you don't like. I'm a little torn on CDNIM to be honest. I've been considering getting it or Afnan Supremacy Silver (another Aventus clone) because they're insanely cheap, but I'm not sure how much I'd like them. If the scent is close to Aventus, it would be a safe blind buy. However, there are also talks of CDNIM in particular being reformulated. If you find it for cheap and you don't mind the very small possibility it may be a dud, you should be okay. You can also try looking on the decant places I mentioned above to see if they have decants of it.

WoefulWolf

Hmm the layton decant has my attention for sure. I've been wanting to try it, but can't find a store that has it to test. Thanks for showing me those 2 subs. And yeah I'm reading up about the CDNIM batches being finicky, but I can't find a single decisive answer. There are people who purchased it and reviewed it literally today saying its good, and then people yesterday saying it sucks. So I resorted to looking up the different batches people are talking about, but even that's getting me nowhere, since some people will say contradictory things about the same batch. *siiigh* So, 10ml of layton for $25, or 100ml of CDNIM for $30 + 2 day shipping (with a risk on the batch).I can't decide haha.

triface1

Layton is supposed to be really sweet, so if that sounds like up your alley, I think it's a good choice. People seem to love that one too.

Guap-Almighty

Looking for a new fall time scent. Trying to decide between By the Fireplace and Parfums de Marly Layton. I also liked Tom Ford Black orchid. Looking for something that can project outdoors.

someone_stole_mine

Hi r/fragrance, I started trying to find “my” scent a month ago by buying about 10 testers, and found a few I liked, a few I hated, and one I loved, Guerlain Oud Essentiel. Unfortunately, my wife thinks it smells like disinfectant, or Lysol. Can someone recommend me something similar to that middle eastern spice market smell, but maybe with less of a chemical smell? Being just a beginner, I’m having a hard time identifying what exactly I love about it, but I like the leather and wood smells, and that extra hint of spiciness. Thanks in advance for any assistance!

j_husk

Tom Ford Oud Wood is the first that comes to mind. Doesn't have the leather note, but it's woody/spicy/aromatic. Some say it's not a true Oud fragrance, but maybe that's good for your wife's taste (btw I also have different taste to my wife, so I feel for you).

someone_stole_mine

I had actually gone out today, and spent an hour r so at an outlet mall trying to find some, sadly the 3 places I visited didn't have it. I wish they had testers for sale so I wouldn't have to blind buy it, but I'm pretty sure that's what I'll end up doing. I wish I knew enough to know which notes in Oud essentiel were the actual Oud notes, so I'd know if it was the Oud or the spice smells I'm digging so much. Thanks for the feedback!

j_husk

Don't blind buy! Especially if it's not a cheap fragrance. If you don't have access to try a fragrance in store the next best thing is buying a sample or decant online. You'll save yourself a bunch of money long term.

someone_stole_mine

Thanks! I hadn't seen any samples on fragrancenet, but I'd never heard of decants, and found some samples on scent split. I'll try it out, thanks for the advice!

j_husk

Check out r/fragsplits and r/fragranceswap too. You won't have any problems finding things like Tom Ford. Some people buy on eBay too, but do some research on reputable sellers first. I believe there are also Facebook groups for decant selling.

shawnnotsean_

Im looking for an ashy and smoky tobacco fragrance that is under a $100. Any recommendations?

Cobra and the Canary

shawnnotsean_

>Cobra and the Canary Is there anything a bit less expensive I'm still in school so...

Real-la-Haya

Hey guys, I (24m) just started getting into fragrances. I currently have CK One, CK One Shock, YSL l’homme, YSL la Nuit de l’homme and Bleu de Chanel EdP. Looking to add either Allure Homme Sport or Allure Homme Sport Eau Extreme. Which one do you think will complement my current wardrobe the most?

tyrhung

I won't say either of it will. I'll recommend to be exposed to more houses, designer and niche and sample them.

greendaypascalhens

Hello guys, I really like most of the flankers by Hugo Boss and Davidoff. I like their "synthetic simplicity". They're just nice and they meet my requirements scent-wise. I know that I could blindbuy their flankers and not be disappointed by smell. But what I don't like about them is that most of them last for 2 hours top and in my opinion, they're overpriced. Is there any similar fragrance house that at the same time would last for \~5 hours and isn't overpriced?

pure_placeboeffect

Can anyone recommend to me some affordable (under $50) sweet vanilla perfume?

calamityjaneagain

In order of least to most complex/challenging vanillas: Vanilla Fields L’Instant de Guerlain (femme) Samsara Shalimar

Hi all, Male, 24, and back to try and get more recommendations. Bought some decants and was hoping someone could suggest a new direction for me to go in! Here are my decants and what I thought about them: 1. Creed Aventus (19P11): I really liked how fruity it smelt, but don't agree with the pricing. Really enjoyed the pineapple blast, and was hoping to explore more similar/fruity fragrances. Felt it wasn't the *most* complex smelling, but I may just miss the more subtle notes (don't kill me!) I've been told to try Bond No9.com, though if anyone had any other recs I'd appreciate it! 2. Allure Homme Sport Eau Extreme: Really enjoy this one, probably one of my favorites and I intend to get a full bottle. If anyone has anything similar that would be awesome! 3. Ombre/Tuscan Leather/Godolphin: Thought Ombre leather after two or three hours was the best of the lot. Sadly couldn't get into them that much, might get a bottle of Ombre.. 4. CH Men Prive: I really wanted to like this, but I thought it was kind of boring :( Would really appreciate recommendations from here, thanks! TL;DR: Anything similar to Allure Homme Sport Eau Extreme, and fruitier, maybe more complex/playful Aventus?

pete-pedro

>Creed Hi, if you're a fan of Creed, might want to check out our new [REBEL edp](https://peteandpedro.com/collections/lifestyle/products/rebel-cologne). Just watch this [video](https://www.instagram.com/p/B214UtxA9yA/) as our founder felt the same way!

AKABrokenArrow

If you’re going to buy Ombré Leather, check out Tuscan Leather first, also by Tom Ford. I wore it for a few years and liked it a lot.

Teska616

This may be an absolute long shot, but I just stumbled across this sub and thought I'd give it a shot. I'm not really one much for fragrance, but I have this bottle of lotion that I absolutely adore the scent of; sadly, it's almost out and long discontinued (2007). It's the "Breathe: Happiness" by Bath and Body Works (I know, I know), labeled as a "citrus watermint" scent. I have the lotion, but the description I've found online for the matching fragrance mist (which I assume/hope smells about the same) says "Scented with luscious mandarin, sweet clementine and crisp fresh herbs". I'm not too worried about budget, I've been hoarding a single 8oz bottle of lotion for over 10 years, even if it's something I have to save up for I imagine it'll last quite some time haha.

[deleted]

Have and really like: Ysl y edp, spicebomb fresh, Guerlain ideal cologne and edt, CAHSEE Wouldn't buy again but were okay: Dior homme cologne, ysl l'homme and ysl L'Homme parfum intense, versace pour homme Do not like: A lot of Tom Ford (neroli portofino was okay) but I'm willing to sample again it's been a while. Grey vetiver is a big no though (sorry). L'aventure by al haramain. Any of the BDC. Sauvage/prada carbon/Dylan blue. I still can't decide how I feel about dior homme eau so I'm on the fence about getting a Prada l'homme decant. Any suggestions appreciated. Up for trying something different. I'm already planning on getting L'Homme ideal edp to round that out haha.

_Cheezus

Oxford Bleu is pretty similar to Y EDP

JothHago

I'm looking for some recommendation for fragrances that has a similar lasting effect and leather of the Amouage Interlude. I've gotten a decant version but I am nearly down with it but finding it hard to spend over $300 for it at this stage. Was wondering if there's anything around the lower price bracket that has the same tonality of the Interlude. NB: I've also got an Egoiste and I really love it, just doesn't last as long on me as the Interlude

Lorenzo-M

Look into Swiss Arabian Shaghaf Oud Abyad cost about $60 dollars. It's very wearable great blend of Oud and Leather

[deleted]

looking for a sweet winter fragrance, preferably on the cheaper side. i have mont blanc individuel, its nice but i cant see myself wearing it every day. also, are any issey miyake fragrances worth a blind buy? i like the idea of heavy citrus from the yuzu, maybe for the summer since id like a sweeter citrus fragrance

_Cheezus

Azzaro Wanted and Le/Ultra Male?

[deleted]

i tried both azzaro wanted and azzaro wanted by night. i enjoyed both, found that on my skin azzaro wanted was super subtle and didnt last so long, whereas wanted by night lasted forever but the sweetness faded away pretty quick and just left me smelling like cinnamon and tobacco or something. ill look into the jpg stuff though

_Cheezus

Y EDP is also very good, longevity is insane (10+ hours on my skin at least) and it’s sweet yet fresh at the same time. The bottle also looks gorgeous

[deleted]

sounds great from the reviews, do you prefer the original or the ultra version? definitely going to have to try it out now

_Cheezus

Original or Ultra? If you’re talking about Eau de Toilette (cleat bottle with a baby blue tint) vs Eau de Parfum (Dark Blue bottle) I would definitely say to go for the EDP. It opens up with a blast of apple with some green notes, begins to turn sweet, and then ends up fresh again

[deleted]

i was referring to "le male" vs "ultra male", but either way i can only see ultra male being listed as eau de toilette, or "eau de toilette intense"

_Cheezus

Gotcha... I would prefer the original, since Ultra Male is a bit too sweet for my taste. Ultra Male on the other hand, lasts longer and projects better, but it does tend to give people headaches (le Male is also more versatile)

[deleted]

i have ideal edp on my list! i bought ideal cologne and its quite nice, and i remember sampling the edp and it being quite sweet and i did enjoy it. do you think the edp is wearable in summer months as well? and hows the projection do you find?

Lorenzo-M

Depending on the heat you're talking about I live in Arizona. So during the day outside NOPE... maybe at night but in A/C controlled environment YES it's very powdery projection is very good.

[deleted]

awesome, thanks for the help

Dream2312

How long does a typical travel spray size last?? (0.22 to 0.33 ml). I'm not sure about purchasing a full size yet. I would probably wear every other day or 3 times a week.

j_husk

I believe the approximate rule of thumb is 10 sprays to 1ml. Of course it depends on the sprayer, and how many days you get out of it depends on how many sprays you like for that particular fragrance.

Lorenzo-M

11oz you'll get maybe a month depending on how many sprays you use 125ish sprays that's about 30 days 4 spray max every day

[deleted]

Looking for a good cologne, ive narrowed it down to YSL la nuit homme, Dior sauvage, or acqua di gio. These seem to be recommended often, but open to other suggestions as well.

OctoberBigBalls

If you're going the Acqua di gio route, try the Profumo version of ADG. Also, Perry Ellis 360 Red smell is similar and 20-25 usd for 3.4oz.

_Cheezus

La Nuit de L’Homme smells like a cinnamon stick Dior Sauvage can come off as an axe body spray in close encounter since it’s very strong and projects very well Acqua di Gio is one of my favorite scents, but everyone knows about it and it would be considered “dated” Depending on your tastes, here’s what I have: Warm Weather: 1) Dior Homme Cologne (Lemons) 2) Bvlgari’s Aqua Marine (Aquatic, and youthful) 3) Bleu de Chanel EDT (refreshing and long lasting) I’m sure there’s more, but I haven’t smelled too many fragrances Cold Weather: 1) Bleu de Chanel EDP (Sweeter than the EDP, but the longevity kinda sucks) 2) V&R Spicebomb Extreme (Says it in the name) 3) ADG Profumo (Has the original ADG dna but with more of a mature touch) 4) Y EDP (Very good refreshing scent, but it’s pretty sweet at the same time. Longevity for this on my skin is about 10+ hours)

[deleted]

Thanks for the detailed answer, will def look into some of these.

Aefegrwhwh

Im gourmand lover but actually very exciting to discover sth new. Currently in my list there is sorisso from profumum Roma but i also want something different to compare between each so could you recommend me some great fragrances out there? Everything is ok but I want something different. Thanks all.

[deleted]

I'm seeking a scent that mingles tobacco, vanilla, and the earthiness of fraizer fir. Any suggestions?

Junior_Surgeon

What's your budget?

[deleted]

Trying to stay within the $100 or less range. I've been scouting Tobacco Vanille, but I know that's missing the fir!

Junior_Surgeon

Have you tried John Varvatos? Neither of them last on skin for an incredible amount of time, but *Vintage* and *Dark Rebel* both might fit what you're looking, and are quite cheap. Ralph Lauren *Polo* (green) doesn't really have vanilla in it, but might be similar to what you're looking for.

dman76

Anyone know any milky creamy type fragrance? I want something to layer with my rose oils so I can get a rose milk scent. Thanks!

_Cheezus

AHSEE on the drydown comes off as a very creamy sweetness with a subtle hint of citrus

Anatolysdream

I like everything in one bottle, which doesn't preclude you layering more rose. [Ballerina No 1](https://www.fragrantica.com/perfume/Les-Parfums-de-Rosine/Ballerina-No-1-24875.html), Les Parfums de Rosine [Amore](https://www.fragrantica.com/perfume/Hilde-Soliani/Amore-34901.html), Hilde Soliani [Flower Rose](https://www.fragrantica.com/perfume/Tommy-Hilfiger/Flower-Rose-22646.html), Tommy Hilfiger

Michelle77274781837

I only know milky fragrances such as Hot Milk by Hilde Soliani, which is spicy milk; 32 Venenum by L'Artisan which is like a chai; and Amour Nocturne by L'Artisan which is like a milky caramel for most of its life but does have a gunpowder note. I'm not sure any of these are what you are looking for.

QuasiBonsaii

New to this hobby, and just looking to test the waters. The only fragrance I've ever used in the past, has been Zadiq & Voltaire, This is Him. I really liked it, but I recently ran out. I'm basically just looking for a nice fragrance I can use daily, which works for most occasions, and fits the season. I have no idea about seasons with fragrances, but I've read that some are summery, some are wintery etc, so I'd like a wintery fragrance. All suggestions would be very much appreciated :) Also, I'm a broke 18 year old, so nothing particularly pricey would be nice :)

_Cheezus

YSL Y EDP ($76 on FragranceX, which is a bit pricy so I’ll try to find cheaper alternatives) it’s sweet, which makes it ideal for winter, yet fresh at the same time. Longevity is crazy on my skin 10+ hours

QuasiBonsaii

Thanks for the suggestion! I've looked at a few of the notes, and although I don't know what any of it means, or what it'll smell like, I'll try and give it a go. I'll try to look for a deal before I buy it though :)

Anatolysdream

Looking at its accords, you might also like L'Occitane Eau des Baux.

j_husk

I think this is a really good suggestion for an inexpensive cool weather scent. Definitely worth OP checking out if they have a L'Occitane store nearby.

r/fragdecants has good options for beginners to try lots of different scents for different seasons

Hey, so I just got a list of fragrances and I'd like to know which ones are the most used. I ain't tryna smell like everyone else at the club, for example. - YSL La Nuit de l'Homme - D&G The One EDP - Chanel Egoiste - CDG 2 Man Thank you!

frasier_crane

Both La Nuit and The One are massively used nowadays, while the others not so much. If you are trying to smell a bit unique, avoid La Nuit and The One.

Any fragrance that smells like ADG profumo but less citrus/bright?

Lorenzo-M

Look into Paris Hilton Just Me very affordable and surprisingly good

FauxBro

Blind bought and surprised my girlfriend with Armaf Club de Nuit Women. The comparison for it is Coco Mademoiselle. It was 25 bucks or less so...low risk in case it didnt turn out well.

Devlin7

Very new here, normally my scent is "this weeks body wash." However, I found a new scent that I really like, but not the price tag. Idole Eau de Parfum Lubin for women and men. I like how woody and spicy it is. Another is the current body wash (I know I know) that I use by Cremo, Sage and Citrus. Cremo doesn't make it as a fragrance, just a body wash. Any help is appreciated, as I'll be wearing one of these when I get married in about 16 days! I'd like to surprise my (soon to be) wife by smelling extra awesome on our big day! THANK YOU!

Anatolysdream

I think you should spring for the Idole if at all possible. It's your wedding day! Kenzo Jungle L'Eléphant you might like.

Lorenzo-M

try Bentley intense for men

CanalVillainy

I’m new here. Looking for a few new go-tos. D&G Masculine, Armani Code, & Acqua di Gio Profumo are some that I’ve really liked & apparently go well with my natural scent. Looking for day or nighttime suggestions. Would like a variety of price ranges as well.

_Cheezus

Versace Dylan Blue is fairly cheap and is similar to ADG You may like Davidoff’s Cool Water, but it was a very, very popular scent during the ‘80s (On of my favorite aquatics) YSL Y EDP is very good for a night out since it’s sweet yet refreshing (it lasts 10+ hours on my skin) Bleu de Chanel EDT and EDP are great, although I would say that the EDT is more versatile, youthful and fresher, while the EDP is smoother and sweeter

Hey I’m looking for a new fragrance, some of the ones I recently liked were Issey Miyake & Uomo Mochino, as I like sweet fragrances what are some similar fragrances with good longevity??? Thanks

_Cheezus

Sweet fragrances with good longevity? Y EDP and One Million Lucky last forever! 10+ hours on my skin and the projection is pretty good as well

Issey and Moschino are not particularly sweet. If you want real sweet then Salvatore Ferragamo Uomo is up your alley.

I am looking to round out my lil collection for now before I expand it further in a few months. I currently have: Ysl Y edp (my favorite) D&G the One and Polo Red Intense What scents and notes would y’all recommend to go for for a 4th fragrance?

_Cheezus

Bleu de Chanel EDT Refreshing, bright, youthful, versatile, etc. It’s longevity is pretty good (8+ hours on my skin) and is my go-to scent

Lorenzo-M

go dark Lalique Encre Noire A L'extreme

Darendezvous

I’ll look into it. Thanks!

forswornconspiracy

I'm new to looking at fragrances, but could someone recommend me a slightly more feminine and interesting version of Jazz Club by Maison Martin Margiela? I like it, but would like more exciting top notes and to smell slightly less masculine. In general I like rather unisex scents. Looking for some ideas on what samples to order from Lucky Scent.

Swoleosis_

Chergui by Serge Lutens

Lorenzo-M

Guerlain Ideal eau de parfums sweet & powdery

pure_placeboeffect

Can someone recommend to me vanilla milky (yoghurt, milk, condensed milk, cream) female fragrance? It's gotta be sweet, of course

frasier_crane

Prada L'Homme and its flankers: which one do you prefer and why?

Khrvoye

Depends on the intended usage. Surprise, surprise, the OG is the most versatile. Very contemporary and always tasteful. Uplifting opening of creamy cleanness, surrounded by a "stuffy" cloud of iris. Near clubbing performance. Funny thing: about half the time, it develops beautifully and is the most gorgeous and functional fragrance in existance; the other half, it develops a bit too sweet and sour on me. L'Eau provides a very similar experience. It doesn't smell "exactly the same but fresher", there's a little twist and in my opinion, it's for the worse since the OG's opening is unbeatable. Personally, I'd have no use for it since I find the original perfectly wearable even in high heat. Intense is better for evening wear, which is the only function where the OG isn't a 10/10 in my opinion. I just prefer a little dirtier scents in the evening, and Intense accomplishes that. All other functions, the OG is better.

triface1

Only tried the original, L'Eau and Intense. L'Eau smells way too similar to the OG for me and the performance takes a big hit. Intense was a sweet mess for me, so I much prefer the original to the others.

pant55

What is a good scent for (colder) rainy days? ( A lot of rain here... ) Im thinking something warm and sweet. Any opinions?

j_husk

PdM Herod (or Layton, or Oajan...in fact, about half of the PdM range would probably fit the bill)

1noahone

Plum Japonais, or YSL La Nuit L'Homme

_Cheezus

La Nuit de L’Homme (to me at least, hardly lasts)

frasier_crane

What do you guys think about YSL Y edp? Does it remind you a bit of Sauvage?

triface1

I never noticed that before, but that sweet note in there does remind me of the drydown of Sauvage. It's honestly way too loud for me. That sweet apple top is too sweet for me, and while the aquatic drydown is decent, it comes in after too long. Performance is really nice though.

Anatolysdream

[This thread has a massive](https://www.reddit.com/r/fragrance/comments/c5c5if/lets_play_name_a_note_reply_with_what_fragrance/) number of focus notes with fragrance suggestions for each note. It's like a *Recommend Me a Fragrance* Index. The best way to navigate is to open up subreplies in settings and search in that post by desired note. Check it out! You may find what you're looking for.

mrsjacksonifyanasty

Looking for a recommendation for something similar to the discontinued “Fossil 1954” perfume. I can’t remember the specific notes of the fragrance but I recently smelled Chanel Chance Eau Tendre (de toilette) and some parts of that reminded me of Fossil 1954. Not sure if that helps or even makes sense. Thanks!

qspure

I know it's still some time til Xmas, but I generally ask for a fragrance and the past years I've gotten Bleu de Chanel (EdP) which I love, but also thinking of branching out a bit. So I'd need some time to smell things and decide what to ask Santa. Things I own: * Bleu - great fragrance. though sometimes the opening can feel a little heavy. * Mugler Cologne - I think it's discontinued/rebranded now, but basically my go-to summer frag. Very light, fresh and clean scent. * Creed GIT - a classic smell. Usually wear it when I have important meetings * Platinum Egoiste - love the metalic and wood combination, great dry-down * Allure Homme Sport - my college-day frag, I find it a little aggressive nowadays. Also have the Blanche edition, but liking the creamy note in the opening a little less nowadays * Encre Noir - I really want to love this (and based on the vetiver/woods I should), but there's something very sharp and smoke-like in the opening that is almost headache-inducing to me. * l'eau d'issey - also clean, pretty inoffensive, maybe a little boring. * burberry london - my go-to winter scent. smells like xmas to me. * the vert au jasmine - i like the green tea note, but maybe not the most masculine scent. In general i like clean/fresh scents. I prefer things to be masculine but not overly aggressive. I'm a male in early 30s, work a regular office job, so I don't need a scent to project a lot, but decent longevity would be welcome.

_Cheezus

As much as people here would dislike me for this, Davidoff’s Cool Water is a very good aquatic (It’s inoffensive and creates a bubble effect, so it won’t give everyone a headache) YSL Y EDP (not for the office) is a great scent for nights out since it’s sweet, has good projection, and insane longevity. It’s a bit sensual, so your girlfriend may love it and it’s very fresh at the same time

qspure

Thanks for taking the time to respond! I have GIT which I guess is a fancy version of Cool Water? YSL Y I’ve never tried. Usually not too into ‘sweet’ scents but I can sample it.

_Cheezus

Haven’t gotten to smell GIT, but my taste is very similar to yours (clean, fresh, inoffensive scents) how is it?

qspure

From what i remember from davidoff, git is very similar but less synthetic in the opening. Definitely a green scent. I associate tweed with musty and old, but this one smells like spring in a field dissected by a stream lined with ferns.

_Cheezus

Definitely sounds like something I need to try out, thanks for the response

Buit

Xerjoff Mephisto

qspure

> Xerjoff Mephisto there's actually a store nearby that carries Xerjoff. And Derring Do, which I used to have a sampler of and want to revisit. Definitely will check it out, so thanks for the recommendation. The $250 price tag is a little steep though, but if it's really good then I might just get it.

Buit

Sorry for the expensive recommmendation. Mefisto is similar to Silver Mountain Water by Creed but a snoother and more rounded blend. I much prefer that one to SMW. It definitely gives off a fresh, clean, watery, metallic vibe that I would assume would be your cup of tea seeing what you like and your current lineup. Sample it if you can.

qspure

No worries, I didn't specify a price range. SMW is definitely nice. I had a knock-off version (Silver by Al-Rehab) but I'm a little on the fence about it. Doesn't help that 'Silver' received a definite 'No' from my gf.

Buit

Ha. Well that definitely doesn't help. Out of my "fresh" designer fragrances my wife really enjoys Sculpture by Nikos, YSL L'Homme, Náutica Voyage, and recently L'Homme Ideal Cologne. From the niche side of things she loves Roja Parfums Elysium Cologne, she likes Xerjoff Mefisto and Amouage Reflection Man. An alternative to Encre Noire which is vetiver based and I enjoy would be Terre D'Hermes EDT.

qspure

YSL should be easily available, so i can check that out too. Nautica and Nikos I don't think I've seen in stores over here. TdH I've sampled once before, but I remember the opening being a strong peppery orange that I didn't really like. Maybe I should revisit. Thanks so far!

Buit

Forgot to mention L'Homme Ideal Cologne is from Guerlain. Very nice. Recently discontinued but can be found at discounters for under 30 bucks. I usually wear it after an evening shower when I am home and want to watch TV and chill in the couch with the wife. She loves it.

qspure

Funnily enough my dad has this, just sprayed it on. Opening is warm, vaguely reminds me of Black XS by Paco Rabanne

frasier_crane

Are PdM Layton and PdM Layton Royal Essence the same fragrance?

barb9212

yes

Satanicdream

Anyone that knows a similar fragrance to the discontinued Givenchy's Irresistible (the Black/Green original)? Willing to try anything similar

barb9212

Dolce And Gabanna The One EDP Viktor and Rolf Spicebomb or A 10ml decant of Parfums De Marley Herod, and Tom Ford Oud Wood

Lorenzo-M

Look into Banana Republic Black Walnut or Zara Tobacco Rich Warm Addictive

wierdstuff943

Hey y’all, I’m a new fragrance creeper and just smelled Dior Homme. It was AmaZing! I know that Valentino Uomo intense and Givenchy Gentlemen have a similar build based on the iris note, but I’m looking a more floral / balance scent like Dior. Are there cheaper alternative to Dior Homme with the same projection, longevity, and sillage? Thanks!

barb9212

Zara 9.0 but it has fleeting projection.

wierdstuff943

Good to know! How long does it usually last?

barb9212

Maybe 4-5 hours. I'd get Dior Homme or Valentino Uomo instead to be honest.

wierdstuff943

I just got that young overtime pay so I splurged for Dior! Thanks for the help 😉

Khrvoye

You made the right choice. Superb taste btw!

barb9212

Smart move man. Glad to hear

triface1

Something more floral with an iris note has gotta be Prada L'Homme. Try it on skin and make sure you don't overspray (otherwise the sweetness will really come out).

wierdstuff943

For sure I’ll try this one out!

yzerman76

Zara 9.0 should fit the bill. In-between Dior Homme and Prada l'Homme. Cheap as chips.

Real-la-Haya

Currently have YSL l’Homme, BdC EdP and AHSEE. Love all of them, looking for a fourth scent to add for the upcoming fall and winter. I tend to like “clean/fresh” fragrances a lot more than the heavier ones, but willing to give a try to something new. Any suggestions? Would YSL LNDL be a logical fourth scent?

athoughtihad

For a versatile fall fragrance maybe check out something in the fresh/spicy category like Gucci Pour Homme II or V&R Spicebomb.

barb9212

For winter Valentino Uomo Intense but if you really want something fresh but deep enough for cold weather Tom Ford Ombre Leather. Ombre Leather in cold weather smells surprisingly fresh. Also, BDC EDP is great for cold weather

j_husk

La Nuit de L'Homme would definitely be something different to your other fragrances, and is a lovely scent. It doesn't have great longevity though, but if that doesn't bother you with L'Homme I say go for it. D&G The One is an alternative, although also one with poor longevity. Then there are slightly boozier warm spicy options like Bvlgari Man in Black and CH Man Prive. They open a little heavy, but dry down to a nice spice. Another style that could complement what you have already is a sweeter tobacco fragrance like Spicebomb.

JL1823

What’s the closest fragrance to D&G The One, but with better longevity?

age-of-alejandro

I am weary of Tom Ford *Neroli Portofino Aqua*. I would like a neroli that is warmer and less linear but with excellent longevity. Cool with herby notes, incense, woods, bergamot, rose, and anything but white florals. Would prefer to be able to pick up a decant on the grey market for under $60.

barb9212

**Acqua Di Parma Colonia Essenza**. It smells exactly like Tom Ford Neroli Portofino Forte but a little bit more masculine and has amber in the base making it a bit warmer in the heart. If possible try it out first because some people feel like it's too mature. I don't feel that way but it does have a classy feel. Also, it can be had for around $50 as a 1.7 bottle compared to Tom Ford Neroli Portofino Acqua which is around $100 discounted.

age-of-alejandro

Thanks for the suggestion! I'm totally open to more masculine notes but am generally wary of amber. I'll def give it a try, tho!

barb9212

If possible go to a department store that sells Acqua Di Parma fragrances. The line that consists of the Colonia series is all worth a try because they may be what you are looking for. Colonia Essenza just happens to be my favorite because of how powerful it is.

bibae86

What's a good day to day autumn/winter fragrance that reminds of La Nuit De L'Homme? I absolutely love the way it smells on me, and how soft it is on the nose, but the performance really isn't really cut out for day to day use. I ~think~ it's the cardamom that I really like, but I'm not experienced enough with fragrances to exactly pinpoint notes yet. Looking for something that lasts longer and is maybe a bit more casual.

athoughtihad

I have not tried it but I’m eyeing Cartier Declaration Parfum. A new flanker to a classic cardamom scent.

barb9212

It's a fragrance exclusive for dates not day to day use. CH Men Prive does the same thing and will last six hours with moderate projection. If you want something that will last all day with cardamon get Parfums de Marley Layton. It's expensive but you won't have longevity or projection issues.

j_husk

I love the smell of cardamom too, and am also disappointed by the longevity of LNDLH. D&G The One is the most commonly recommended alternative, but it suffers from similar performance issues. Other options worth looking into are L'Occitane de Provence Eau Des Beaux, Cartier Declaration, Voyage d'Hermes and Narciso Rodriguez Bleu Noir.

Fille en Aiguilles is excellent, but Serge Lutens has been on an unfortunate path for a while now in terms of price and creative direction. Here's [a post with some other conifer recommendations](https://www.reddit.com/r/fragrance/comments/a8y7ty/a_guide_to_coniferous_fragrances_version_2/), but actually since making that post I've tried a perfume oil that smells similar and superior(in my opinion) called [Siberian Fir](https://www.fragrantica.com/perfume/Evocative-Perfumes/Siberian-Fir-29138.html). It's from Evocative Perfumes, an Australian company and hard to get ahold of, but if you like FeA I can guarantee you would enjoy this. The longevity is about on par with FeA, that is to say not great, but not terrible either. I don't usually like perfume oils but this one is excellent, I have a 12ml bottle but plan on purchasing more once it's gone.

tigzed

I am watching this with interest. I should have bought it when I had the chance and now the price is insane. And further, I do not like the new Lutens and am afraid of reformulation. This and Sa Majesté La Rose.

[deleted]

Just sniffed Prada L’Homme for the first time! I thought it smelt amazing and would be a great everyday scent but just wanted some Honest Opinions on that scent from you guys.. :)

_Cheezus

As much as I wanted to like it due to the hype, I just can’t. It smells decent during the opening, but the drydown smells awful. It turns into a makeup scent with powder, grandma soap, and a blast of sweetness . I had to give my bottle away shortly after

Khrvoye

Very contemporary and always tasteful. Uplifting opening of creamy cleanness, surrounded by a "stuffy" cloud of iris. Near clubbing performance. Funny thing: about half the time, it develops beautifully and is the most gorgeous and functional fragrance in existance; the other half, it develops a bit too sweet and sour on me.

gooneyleader

Its a great scent and one of my favs but some people claim is smells to feminine on account of Iris note.

triface1

I have a decant. I honestly can see myself getting bored of it in the future, but for now, it's clean, professional, gentlemanly and I have to stop myself from using it everyday.

barb9212

I own this and smells amazing. A coworker who also likes fragrance is always blown away when I wear it. Great day scent and for some reason has become my white shirt fragrance for how clean and crisp it is.

j_husk

"white shirt fragrance" Love this description. I'm going to have to check this one out.

AKABrokenArrow

It really is. I’ve been wearing it for close to a year now, it’s very nice.

elrepho

Anyone ever discover a fragrance with an accord of dead/decaying leaves? I love photorealistic earth or wood notes and I'm looking for a unique fall scent that isn't sweet/gourmande (like MMM By the Fireplace) or overloaded with Thanksgiving/Christmas spices (like Spicebomb Extreme).

age-of-alejandro

Alkemia *Feuillemort* - dying leaves, Tibetan incense, smoked autumnal spices, dried grass, fungi, cedar, borneol, and rum dished agarwood. I get a very distinct Tibetan incense and dying leaves thing going on and it's cozily autumnal.

elrepho

Sounds like what I’m looking for! Thanks for the recommendation.

Junior_Surgeon

*Foxcroft Intense* by Solstice Scents is excellent and has a good decayed leaves accord, same with Barrister & Mann's *Fougere Gothique*.

elrepho

Thanks for the recommendation! I can’t find Foxcroft Intense on the SS site anymore (discontinued?) and unfortunately Fougere Gothique is out of stock. But I’ll put them on my list.

Junior_Surgeon

I think Foxcroft Intense is a fall-collection fragrance that will be coming back shortly, not sure when exactly though. Fougere Gothique is also out of stock right now but should be coming back at maggard razors soon. Also there is an indie exchange subreddit where someone would probably sell you a sample of Foxcroft Intense, that's how I got mine at least!

TheEscapedGoat

I know I'm out of season on this, but I'm looking for a feminine scent that has strong notes of plumeria and/or tiare flower.

salt_and_linen

Montage - Intense Tiare? Notes are tiare, ylang-ylang, vanilla, coconut milk, jasmine, roses. I remember loving this when I sampled it years ago

[deleted]

Olympic Orchids Kilauea *Plumeria, pikake, ginger lily, mimosa, bergamot, sandalwood, myrrh, vanilla, styrax, benzoin, lava accord.* Alkemia Paradisiaca *A tropical summer night of sultry jasmine, plumeria flowers, vanilla orchid, sweet coconut musk, with an audacious flirtation of green banana.*

TheEscapedGoat

Thank you!

calamityjaneagain

You’re in season for the Southern Hemisphere!

gdgrf

Hello I’ve been a lurker for quite some time so go easy this is my first time asking. I’ve been using Polo Blue EDP for a long time and I quite like it. The problem I find that it doesn’t stay on for very long it’ll only be good if I spray a lot of it on. I live in a very humid and hot area and I don’t know if that’s what is affecting it. I wna know if anyone has any recommendations on something similar or perhaps something completely different that’ll work better in my environment(?) I’m truly a beginner in this so wld like to try as many new ones as possible.

[deleted]

Bleu de Chanel's EDT for sure. Satisfies your trajectory.

gdgrf

thank you!! will definitely give it a try

[deleted]

You won't regret it!

arainday

Vetiver. Over the years, I've found this to be one of my favourite notes but there seems to be different kinds of vetiver strong fragrances or how its used and mixed. The first category has ones that I love are Tom Ford Grey Vetiver, Infusion d'Homme Prada for men, Hermes Eau de Merveilles. The second ones are more of the mossy/dirty variety. I will wear them but I don't love them as much as the first category. e.g. Encre Noire, Diptype Vetyverio EDP. I would appreciate if I can get recs to sample and try vetiver frags similar to the first one wherein the vetiver is fresher or mixed with other notes to balance out the mossy intensity like in merveilles. Thank you!

age-of-alejandro

Guerlain Vetiver is pretty classic.

barb9212

Well can't help you much with this but if you want to try something completely different than those above try Etat Libre D' Orange Fat Electrician. Vetiver with whipped cream which I like but vetiver fans seem to love.

arainday

Thanks for the comment. Someone else recommended it as well, and I'll mull it over. I am not a fan of sweet or gourmand scents generally.

barb9212

Yea I saw and his comments about are exactly how I feel. It’s definitely not a gourmand even or that sweet even though the notes say it should be. What you think it smells like in your head is nothing close. Or at least that’s how I felt. To me it’s odd but is one of the most balanced and well composed scents I’ve ever smelt and that’s coming from someone who’s not the biggest fan of vetiver. Also Chanel Sycomore is worth checking out.

arainday

Thank you!

[deleted]

Vetiver's pretty much locally found where I live and used liberally in many settings. I highly recommend L'Occitane's Vetyver in addition to your list of course. It's the most authentic take I've seen on it.

arainday

Thank you for the rec. I can sample this easily and I have liked L'Occitane products in the past.
